Dubai Weather in December

If it’s the scorching heat of the summer months that has ever put you off visiting Dubai, get set for the wonderfully mild days of December and the winter months in Dubai. 

December’s average temperature is around 26°C/78.8°F, and the average sea temperature is around the same, 25.6°C/78°F. By month’s end, it can even be a little too nippy for ocean swimming—ensure your resort or hotel has a temperature-controlled pool!

The minimum temperature you can expect overnight in Dubai in December is 15°C/59°F. You won’t need much more in the city than a light jacket. Though note, if you are heading to the desert or the mountains overnight on a camping or glamping trip, it could be several degrees cooler; you’ll want a warmer layer of clothing.

With an average of 8 hours of sunshine, you should expect mostly blue skies, though rain and fog are not unheard of in the winter season. Use the cooler weather to get out there and enjoy the natural wonders that surround Dubai.

Dubai Special Events December 2026

Cultural Events & Special Occasions

• Commemoration Day is 1 December, in honour of those soldiers who served their country and lost their lives for the United Arab Emirates. Previously called Martyrs Day, this day of national importance and reflection has been moved to coincide with the National Day holidays. (It is not always a Public Holiday, but events will be held around the country.)
• National Day (Eid al Etihad) traditionally 2 & 3 December,  2025 will mark 54 years since the unification of the United Arab Emirates; previously called National Day, the event was briefly renamed to Union Day, and it seems they have now settled on Arabic name Eid Al Etihad – meaning ‘Celebration of the Union’. Due to the 2nd and 3rd falling midweek, the public holiday has been moved to the 1st and 2nd December for 2025. You will find 54th Anniversary Eid Al Etihad events across the city.
• Christmas Festivities – a great lineup of events is still expected across the city, from winter markets and Christmas trees, to opera shows, kids’ sing-along events and, of course, Christmas Day brunches and takeaway meals. NB Christmas Day is NOT a public holiday in the UAE. You can find our complete listing of Christmas events in Dubai here.
• New Year’s Eve – 31 December always sees spectacular fireworks that light up many of the city’s famous buildings. Crowds can be manic, and hotel costs in prime locations are sky-high, so book well in advance to enjoy this one! Find the lineup of New Year’s Eve events here, which includes Lionel Richie performing live at the Atlantis!

Live Events in Dubai This December

• The queen of Arabic pop, Nancy Ajram will perform live at the Atlantis Dubai Festival on 5 December. She will be joined by Arabic singing sensation Adam ensuring an unforgettable night of music for those lucky enough to attend.
• Korean star Peggy Gou will be bringing her unique mix of vocals and beats to Pacha Icons at Five Luxe on 6 December.
• December 7 brings The Festive Concert to Dubai Opera’s main auditorium, featuring the National Youth Orchestra and National Youth Choir of Dubai, this promises to provide a wonderful start to the festive season.
• Renowned Palestinian composer and pianist, Faraj Suleiman, will take to the stage at the Dubai Opera on 8 December.
• Fans of Japanese culture shouldn’t miss the Japan Culture Convention, which provides an opportunity to learn about Japanese traditions and contemporary culture through immersive workshops and performances. 12-14 December, at Burj Park.
• For something a bit different, why not head aboard the QE2 for a murder mystery dinner on 13 December!
• Don’t miss the festive ballet The Nutcracker at Dubai Opera between 18 and 21 December. Tickets are selling fast, so be sure to book early!
• Franz Ferdinand will make a return to Dubai on 13 December, followed by Pitbull on 14 December. CocaCola Arena
• Once Upon a Time in Dubai:The Musical is Dubai’s first musical, born and raised in the city! With amazing choreography and an original soundtrack, catch this debut show from 20 December through 11 January 2026 – The Agenda, Media City
• From 20-24 December there will be Carols by Candlelight with the Firdaus Orchestra at the Al Wasl Dome in Expo City.
• Experience an Irish Christmas with Emerald Isle – Irish Dance Reborn at the Zabeel Theatre from 21-23 December.

Suggested Dubai Activities in December 2026

Given the mild sunny days, it’s a perfect time of year to do some of Dubai’s more physical outdoor activities. Our top picks for things to do in Dubai in December are:

• Take on the Ras al Khaimah zipline course – Jebel Jais Flight! Not only the longest zipline in the world, where speeds can reach up to 160kms an hour, but also Jebel Jais Tour – seven different zipline courses that meet on a suspended platform in the Hajar Mountains.

Top tip: If you don’t fancy the self-drive up to Ras al Khaimah, check out this tour which can pick you up from your Dubai hotel. It includes transfers to Jebel Jais and the zipline experience.

• Take a tour around the world at Dubai’s Global Village – an international fair-style event held nightly; you’ll find seasonal celebrations, including Union Day and Christmas, marked with stage shows and fireworks.

• This is the perfect time of year to experience Dubai Garden Glow & Dinosaur Park in Zabeel Park. An evening wonderland, the festive season makes it all the more magical.

• Take a tour of the UAE’s east coast. Cross the spectacular Hajar Mountains and experience the calm, warm waters of the Gulf of Oman. There are snorkelling opportunities, as well as boat tours that can take you in amongst the spectacular khors of Musandam, Oman, without needing to cross the land border. Check out this east coast Fujairah day trip, or you can hire your own car and set your own pace.

• For something unique this December, head to the Sharjah exclave of Kalba on the east coast for the weekend of 14-15 December for the inaugural Adventure Festival on 14-15 December for 2 days to partake in a huge range of outdoor and nature-filled adventures. All activities are included in your entry, with the opportunity to participate in water sports, hiking, mountain biking, yoga sessions, and outdoor survival skills sessions.

• Take a Desert Safari – the cooler weather makes it the perfect time to get out on a dune-bashing adventure, or if you’d prefer a more sedate way to enjoy the desert, with an eco-friendly focus, take a journey to the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve.

• Visit Hatta. Hatta can be found to the south of Dubai, near the Oman border, approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes from Downtown Dubai. Enjoy kayaking or paddleboarding, or try the tandem water bikes with a friend! The Hatta Heritage Village will take you through the fascinating history of this mountainous border town, or get into the mountains on one of the hiking trails or hire a mountain bike. Top tip: Stay nearby at the JA Hatta Fort Hotel to make a full weekend of it, or enjoy luxury glamping under the stars at Hatta Resorts – offering bubble domes to caravans and luxury mountain cabins.

• Day trip to Abu Dhabi – there’s no better time to visit Abu Dhabi than in the cooler winter months. The month of December is particularly special, as you’ll get to experience the special events that surround Union Day, as well as Christmas Festivities, from Winter Fest on Yas Island to special theme park theming at Warner Bros World, SeaWorld and Ferrari World for the winter season. Don’t miss the public art exhibition Manar Abu Dhabi happening this winter.

• Seek out Souk Madinat Jumeirah – one of the most festive places to visit in Dubai in December. The annual Madinat Jumeirah Festive Market is one of the best in the city, with the Burj Al Arab providing a beautiful backdrop to their delightful Christmas tree.

Dubai with the Kids in December 2026

This is a fabulous time of year to visit Dubai with your family, though, as we’ve mentioned, it is also one of the most expensive times to visit, and accommodation is booked up in popular locations.

We suggest families look at booking serviced apartments or Airbnb – we have selected our favourite Dubai family apartment options here – or go all out if you’re in a big group and book a family villa with a pool!

There are activities aplenty for families to enjoy; here are some suggestions for December:

• Attend a Christmas show at the QE2 Theatre – this hotel-come-entertainment venue permanently docked at Port Rashid is a wonderful family experience with winter shows a highlight. This year Sinead the Sailor will take to the stage between the 18 and 27 December to share the thrill of his amazing adventures! Younger children (3-11) might also enjoy The Great Christmas Elf Bake Off – a live interactive show on the 6 and 7 December on the QE2.
• Families can also enjoy Rapunzel and her holiday wish at the New Covent Garden Theatre from the 5-24 December and Annie The Musical at the Zabeel Theatre from the 12-14 December. Dubai based children’s entertainer Magic Phil will be bringing his Christmas Cracker show to the Jumeirah Beach Hotel Theatre from 12-14 December. Then from the 17-29 December the magic of the panto hits with Cinderella (also at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel).
• Visit Santa in his snowy Grotto at Ski Dubai! A favourite with local families seeking the perfect Santa photo meet and greet opportunity. Book earlier as this is very popular! Tickets go on sale in early November.

• Swing your way through Mushrif Park – a little hidden gem on the city’s outskirts is Aventura Parks – high ropes and zip lines through the almost forest-like Mushrif Park. Ideal in winter when the waterparks are getting a little cool, but your kids still want an active adventure – other than the occasional Emirates flight landing over your heads, you won’t believe you’re in the city! • Thrilling roller coasters at Motiongate – home to the most thrilling rollercoasters in the Middle East, Motiongate, part of the Dubai Parks & Resorts complex on the city’s western side, is a family favourite of ours. Dubai Average Weather in November

Temperatures drop significantly over November from highs of 38°C/100°F at the start of the month down to the high 20s/low 80s by month-end. Overnight lows are around 20°C/68°F, and morning fog can be a common occurrence as the humidity starts to fall, leading to some spectacular cityscape views.

The sea temperature averages 28.4°C/83°F, so it is still pleasant to take a refreshing dip in the water. It is also perfect for sun worshippers without getting too hot and sweaty.

As it’s still quite hot outside, we’re all about keeping our cool in October, but we don’t need to be trapped indoors all day. It’s a great time of year to enjoy the beaches and water parks when the air temperatures are not so stifling and the water temperatures are beautifully warm.

• Head to Aquaventure at Atlantis the Palm for a day of splashing good fun at one of the world’s biggest and best water parks.
• If it’s getting too hot outside at the peak of the day, make sure you head into the Lost Chambers aquarium, the largest in the UAE – save by buying a combo ticket!

Top Tip: If you stay at Atlantis the Palm then your hotel stay will include your entry to Aquaventure!

• Explore around Souk Madinat Jumeirah. This modern take on an old souk (market) is always abuzz with activity! It is mostly indoors, so it’s great to tackle when it’s still too hot outside. Enjoy cooling off at the latest instalment, “Theatre of Digital Art“, or take an Abra ride through the canals. This is a great place to stock up on your Dubai souvenirs, albeit pricier than the traditional markets in Deira.

• Ripe Market will make its triumphant outdoor seasonal return at Academy Park on 11 October (running through until May 2026). This is one of winter’s hottest local hangouts, offering fresh food, handicrafts, and family activities.

• Enjoy the return of outdoor terraces and rooftop bars in Dubai this October; plenty of newcomers are set to hit the scene, so watch in our latest travel news section.

October Splurge

Enjoy afternoon tea at the city’s most iconic building, the acclaimed “7 Star” Burj Al Arab. You’ll need to save your pennies for one of Dubai’s most luxurious dining options at Skyview Bar & Restaurant.

Day Trips from Dubai in October 2026

The capital city, Abu Dhabi, is Easy to reach by public bus, or by private tour or transfer; here’s what you can expect to find in the neighbouring capital:

• You can see the “Big 3” Cultural sites in Abu Dhabi on a single-day trip tour from Dubai; the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, and Qasr al Watan, the Presidential Palace.

• The “Big 4” theme parks of Yas Island – namely Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi, Yas Waterpark, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, and now the brand new SeaWorld Abu Dhabi!

• Catch NBA action in Abu Dhabi from 3 to 6 October. Two matches, the Boston Celtics vs. the Denver Nuggets, are scheduled, plus a fan appreciation day at Etihad Arena and the NBA District at Manarat Al Saadiyat.

Some suggested day tour operators that will help you with transfers to Abu Dhabi:

• Take a trip to the highest point in the UAE! As the daytime temperatures drop away a little, plan an early morning visit to Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah (RAK).

• While you’re there, take on the longest zipline in the world! Jebel Jais Flight will see you soaring up to 150km/hr through the Hajar Mountains. There’s also the Jais Sky Tour and the Jais Sky Maze for adrenaline-seekers to try their hand at and make it a full day in the mountains. At the peak, you are approximately 2.5 hours away from Dubai.

• Or, alternatively, a bit of a hidden favourite we love is visiting is Suwaidi Pearl Farm in the tiny northern RAK village of Al Rams. There’s a great guide here to all there is to see and do this winter in RAK.

Dubai With Kids in October 2026

Family activities are back in full swing in Dubai. It is still quite hot for outdoor adventures, but by October, the first thing in the morning and early evening are pleasant enough to be out.

If you’ve already tackled some water park fun, as we mentioned above, and are looking for something new, why not try:

• Aventura Parks – a tree surfing and ziplining adventure through the Ghaf trees of Mushrif Park. A floodlit option is available to enjoy the park in the evenings.
• October is the perfect time to enjoy the best public beaches in Dubai.
• Kite Beach is another local favourite for a simple splash, to join in some water sports, or to combine a day at the beach with a picnic in the park at the popular outdoor spot Al Mamzar Beach Park.
• A trip to Dubai isn’t complete without experiencing Dubai Global Village. This evening extravaganza will return in mid-October to brighten Dubai evenings once more with a taste of food, dance, and shopping from around the world.
• Miracle Garden Dubai has just re-opened its doors for the season, and we expect Dubai Garden Glow to open later in the month at a brand new location!

Dubai Weather in September

Average daytime highs can reach 39.2°C (102.5°F), but extreme days can still reach 45.1°C (113.2°F). The daytime average temperature in September is 33°C (91.4°F). The “feels like” temperature (which considers humidity and wind chill) is usually much higher.

Water temperatures remain hot throughout the month; expect an average sea temperature of 32.6°C (90.7°F). To enjoy a splash in Dubai in September, you will still want a resort pool with a chiller!

• From Thursday 18th September until Saturday 20th September, step into the timeless tale of La Boheme at Dubai Opera.
• Comedy fans shouldn’t miss Coco Mamak’s ‘Big Time Comedy’ at the Zabeel Theatre on Friday 19th September. The one-woman show offers an interesting, and very funny, insight into Lebanese culture in the 21st Century.
• Be enchanted as Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, performed by The Hungarian National Ballet, takes to the stage at Dubai Opera on the 25th September. The six night run is sure to be popular so make sure you book your tickets now!
• Discover local soul artist Abri live at The Fridge, Al Serkal Avenue, on Sunday 28th September, and delve into Dubai’s home-grown music scene. To learn more click here.
• Iconic Lebanese singer, Najwa Karam, will be charming audiences in a magic-filled evening at the Dubai Opera on Tuesday 30th September.

Suggested Dubai Activities in September 2026

You can keep playing tourist around Dubai, even in the hottest months, with many attractions indoors and air-conditioned. It might still be a little uncomfortably hot for the beach or desert, but look out for these attractions.

• Visit the Museum of the Future—it is not just a spectacular building but also offers incredible insight into society’s future. The first two floors can be seen for free, but we highly recommend advance booking your tickets for the complete experience.
• The Dubai Frame – Get a bird’s-eye view of how old meets new in this sensational Dubai attraction. Literally a giant frame, you ascend 48 floors above the city in a glass elevator, then walk the see-through glass floor if you dare! To one side, the old city of Deira and onwards to Sharjah; on the other, superb views of Downtown and the Burj Khalifa.
• Speaking of heights, how would you feel taking a glass slide over Downtown Dubai? Test your nerves at Sky View Observatory.
• On a luxury yacht, cruise with airconditioned comfort around the Dubai Marina at night.

• Treat yourself to an indulgent spa day during the off-peak season at a luxury resort.
• Take in spectacular city views from the world’s highest infinity pool during the ‘Swim Under The Stars’ promotion at The Address Beach Resort (5:00 pm to 10:00 pm daily).
• Or try out the evening swim sessions at SAL Beach Club beneath the iconic Burj Al Arab.
• Try the record-breaking Deep Dive Dubai – the deepest indoor pool in the world where you can take scuba diving lessons.
• Check out the stage show spectacular La Perle at Al Habtoor City.

Dubai Family Activities in September 2026

With the little ones returning to school locally from the end of August, September is a much quieter month at many of the city’s family attractions.

We would argue it’s still a little too hot outside to spend a full day indulging in the city’s famous waterparks, but you still might find some cooling water fun in the early evenings.

• Enjoy the combination of the Lost Chambers Aquarium indoors, then head to Aquaventure at Atlantis
• Enjoy the entirely indoor theme park action at IMG Worlds of Adventure.
• Under evening floodlights, take on the Aventura zipline and ropes park in Mushrif Park.
• Check out some of the city’s numerous indoor entertainment parks for kids. Some newer openings to try this year include

Dubai Day Trips in September 2026

Whilst it is still quite hot for getting out and about, grab yourself an air-conditioned set of wheels and consider these day trips within easy driving distance of Dubai:

• Neighbouring Abu Dhabi has plenty of indoor cultural attractions that should be on any UAE visitor’s wish list – think the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Qasr Al Watan – the Presidential Palace, and partially inside, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.
• If you’re more of a theme park fan, head to Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island – Ferrari World, SeaWorld, and Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi are almost entirely indoor theme parks.
• Stay at incredible glamping locations in Hatta for the full outdoor eco experience (just remember plenty of sunshine and hydration!!) – Hatta normally reopens for the season towards the end of September.

One of our favourite family brunch venues, The Swissôtel Traditional Thanksgiving Brunch, will be available at Liwan restaurant from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm on 28 November. It is priced at AED 119 per adult, AED 59 per child aged between 6 and 12, and is complimentary for children below 6.

What is Al Maktoum Airport Dubai?

Situated in the area of the city known as Dubai South, 37 kilometres southwest of the city, DWC is already the site of Al Maktoum International Airport.

When it first opened in 2010, it was known as Dubai World Central, hence the IATA code DWC. The airport was renamed Al Maktoum International Airport (after Dubai’s ruling family) and started taking commercial passenger aircraft in 2013.

Although DWC has long been designated as the future home of Dubai’s aviation hub, the Global Financial Crisis and numerous other factors over the past decade have led to multiple delays in the shift to utilizing the expansive grounds available in Dubai South.

Al Maktoum International Airport presently takes some commercial and cargo flights, but its distance from the city and existing DXB airport (45 kilometres away with no transport links) has long been an issue until a fully comprehensive change to Dubai’s transport infrastructure could be made.

The only periods of time the airport has seen substantial use have been when runway upgrade works have reduced capacity at DXB and occasional emergency diversions.

So in short, we wouldn’t be surprised if you hadn’t heard of Al Maktoum Airport before now!

Grand New Visions For Dubai Aviation

The announcement by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum paves the way for an exciting new era in aviation transport.

Once complete, the new Al Maktoum International Airport terminal will initially have the capacity to handle 150 million passengers annually, growing to 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo by 2050.

Designed to meet the needs of the UAE over the next four decades, the new airport will feature five parallel runways and 400 aircraft gates spanning a 70-square-kilometre site.

Dubai Airport Connections – Now & In The Future

The move will be part of a larger infrastructure plan for the rapidly expanding city. With existing buildings in the city’s east, bordering the emirate of Sharjah, there is no further room for expanding the existing Dubai International Airport. With only two runways, there is no viable way to continue meeting air traffic demand in the decades to come, so a fully fledged second airport is the only real option.

Once opened, Emirates and FlyDubai, the emirate’s two largest state-owned airlines, will fully transition all operations to DWC.

Timeline For The Transition To The New Al Maktoum Airport

The most crucial question you undoubtedly have is when these changes will take effect and which airlines will be affected.

The short answer is that no definitive date has been given, yet. However, reading between the lines of statements made by Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and CEO of Emirates Airline and Group, it appears that the full integration of Emirates and FlyDubai into Al Maktoum International Airport will occur ‘within 10 years’—so it would be safe to say by 2034.

UPDATE! In October 2025, Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths indicated that DXB airport is expected to exceed the 100 million annual passenger mark ‘within the next two years’, reaching maximum capacity of 115 million passengers by 2031. He explained that when they reach capacity, operations will be transitioned to Al Maktoum International Airport in 2032 when they anticipate handing 124 million passengers.

There’s certainly no need to recheck your ticket routing in the next few years, as this AED 128 billion project will be a monumental task – the biggest of its kind seen anywhere in the world – as Dubai looks to cement its position as the world’s largest aviation hub.

There has been no specific announcement yet on what will happen to other airlines that presently use DXB, or whether they will continue to operate on the two runways at DXB after transitioning to the new Al Maktoum International Airport. Currently, 102 international airlines connect Dubai to 262 destinations worldwide in 104 countries.

Best Locations to Catch Dubai New Year’s Eve Fireworks in Dubai

There are a reported 32 fireworks shows happening in locations across the city of Dubai this year; these are the major ones you might want to attend:

Burj Khalifa

Witnessing New Year’s Eve fireworks at Burj Khalifa is nothing short of magical. The world’s tallest building lights up with dazzling pyrotechnics, as do the surrounding buildings of Downtown Dubai, for an unforgettable show of lights and colours, reflecting off the building’s futuristic architecture and creating a mesmerizing spectacle in Dubai’s night sky.

During the evening, be entertained by the Dubai Fountains water show every 15 minutes, one of the most spectacular dancing fountain shows in the world set to music.

NB: Downtown Dubai becomes a ticketed area for New Year’s Eve – only Emaar Ticket Holders will be getting front seat views – they will collect a badge in the days prior to the event from designated locations.

Getting there: Get in super early and only turn up if you have a pre-booked ticket; attempting to get into the area without one, you’ll only add to the crush and be disappointed. Note that the nearest Metro station at Dubai Mall/Burj Khalifa is shut from 5:00 PM to avoid overcrowding, so plan your route accordingly.

To help the flow of guests into Downtown Dubai, there are designated shuttle parking locations in Al Wasl and Meydan—available to badge holders only.

Al Seef

Celebrating New Year’s Eve at Al Seef offers a blend of traditional and modern experiences. The fireworks here illuminate the Dubai Creek and the heritage area, offering a breathtaking view that contrasts the city’s historic roots with its contemporary zest, perfect for those seeking a culturally rich celebration.

Getting There: if you want to use the underground car park, get in super early as it will close once full, regardless if you have dinner reservations. Try the Metro instead, closest is Sharaf DG.

Atlantis the Palm

The iconic Atlantis The Palm provides an extravagant backdrop for New Year’s Eve fireworks. This luxurious resort hosts a stunning display over the Palm Jumeirah, creating a mesmerizing reflection over the waters, ideal for those seeking a lavish and picturesque celebration.

Getting there: in the past they have run buses up the Palm, TBC if they are doing this, otherwise your public transport choice is only the Palm Monorail.

Jumeirah Beach Residences (JBR) and Bluewaters

JBR is a vibrant location for enjoying the fireworks on New Year’s Eve. The beachfront setting offers a lively atmosphere to keep you busy and fed in the hours leading up to the fireworks celebrations amidst the ambiance of The Walk and The Beach.

Getting there: Take public transport, the Metro to Dubai Marina stops or the Dubai Tram to get to your chosen location. Bluewaters and JBR will have parking for early birds, but expect these to be full bye early evening and traffic jams intense.

Riverland

Riverland Dubai offers a unique setting for New Year’s Eve fireworks, with its medieval-themed village and river, nestled between Dubai Parks & Resorts for theme park fans. The fireworks and laser show here create a stunning reflection on the water, offering a serene and picturesque experience, perfect for families and couples.

If you are not in visiting the theme parks on the 31st, then entry is 15 AED, which is redeemable on F&B. The fireworks and laser show will occur at the family-friendly time of 7:00 PM and again at 9:00 PM.

Getting there: There are public transport options, but this is one you could catch the car to as they have vast car parks and a transit service in to the entrance gates.

Global Village

Celebrating at Global Village means experiencing New Year’s Eve with a multicultural twist. The fireworks here are set against the backdrop of pavilions representing different countries, offering a global celebration that is both vibrant and diverse.

The unique part about celebrating at Global Village is that you get not one but 7 New Year’s countdowns! The Celebrations schedule includes:

• China – 8:00 PM
• Thailand – 9:00 PM
• Bangladesh – 10:00 PM
• India – 10:30 PM
• Pakistan – 11:00 PM
• UAE – 12:00 AM
• Turkey – 1:00 AM

Note that this year Global Village has announced the New Year event will be one of their dedicated family days for women and children; adult males are only permitted with their family group.

Getting there: There is a huge car park here, but expect it to be at capacity from very early on – gates open 4:00 PM. Public transport routes service the venue too, but expect buses to be pretty full.

Dubai Festival City

Dubai Festival City is known for its impressive New Year’s Eve fireworks, complemented by laser, light, and water shows. The Festival Bay provides a fantastic viewing spot, blending the fireworks with the unique Imagine show, for a truly immersive experience.

NB this year entry to Festival Bay for the show is a ticketed event, adults AED 150, Kids AED 90, under 5’s free.

Getting there: Covered with parking and public transport under the Mall, but do arrive early even with tickets, to get parking nearby.

The Els Club

The Els Club offers a more laid-back setting for New Year’s Eve celebrations. The fireworks display here is set against the lush greenery of the golf course, creating an elegant and tranquil ambiance, ideal for those seeking a more relaxed celebration.

Town Square Dubai

Town Square Dubai is perfect for a family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebration. The fireworks display in this community-oriented location is both impressive and welcoming, offering a festive atmosphere that is enjoyed by residents and visitors alike, amidst open spaces and parkland.

Transport in Dubai for New Years

It;s essential to note that this is the busiest night of the year in Dubai in one of the busiest party cities in the world. We wouldn’t attempt anything impromptu; pre-book and plan what you intend to do and get there many hours beforehand.

The Metro train will run all night to help revellers get around, but be aware of station bottlenecks.

Taxis can be prebook but are absolutely notorious for cancelling all pre-bookings and working on a ‘just in time’ system to try and keep the city moving.

A series of road closures are implemented in the hours before new years.

Dubai School Holidays 2024

There is both a public (MoE) and private (international) school sector in Dubai, governed by KHDA (Knowledge and Human Development Authority). The dates they have stipulated as holidays in a three-term school year for September starting curriculums are:

• Winter Break 9 December to 1 January 2024 (schools return 2 January 2024)
• Spring Break 23 March to 15 April 2024 (International Schools/MoE Schools – incorporates Eid al Fitr)
• Summer Break Not before 28 June 2024 until approximately 27 August 2024*

*The end of summer break is only anticipated until formally announced by the Government.

21 April – or 1 Shawwal 1443 in the Hijri (Islamic) calendar – sees the start of several days of celebrations for the Muslim community around the world as they end their daytime fasting. Prayers take place, along with Zakat (charity) and the giving of gifts (including Eidi) amongst friends and family.

As well as being a joyous celebration, it’s a time of year when many businesses close for extended public holidays.

2023 Eid Holiday Dates in Dubai

For the Government and private sector in the UAE and schools, Eid ul-Fitr in 2023 will result in many getting a 4 or 5-day holiday!! (Starting Wednesday afternoon, 19 April, all the way through to possibly Monday, 24 April 2023).

Public and Private sector employees have already been advised of the upcoming 4-day break by a Government announcement; the Monday will depend if the moon sighting committee declares Shawwal 1 on Friday or Saturday.

(Fear not if you are upset you didn’t get the surprise 9 days off we got in 2022; Eid al-Adha and Arafat day due end of June will fall likely Tuesday to Friday, we are ever-hopefully we’ll get our 9 days off then!!)

Regardless of how many days are officially public holidays, one thing is for sure. It’s gonna be busy, busy, busy in Dubai over Eid. We mean super busy.

Airports will be at capacity as many travellers flock both away from the Emirates for a short escape and into the Emirates to enjoy the very best of what Dubai has to offer.

Holiday Deals in Dubai over Eid

One thing is for sure, if you’re only looking for Eid deals in Dubai this week, you’ve probably left it too late!

We are seeing so many travellers asking since the holiday announcement for “great value Eid deals”; the bottom line is, this is when the tourism industry has their prices at their highest; hotels are the most crowded, and sightseeing and attractions at their busiest. It’s a simple case of supply and demand.

“Deals” per se, will simply be hard, if not impossible, to come by over the Dubai Eid Holiday.

In fact, even many existing “deals” in Dubai are null and void over public holidays such as Eid.

That said if you’re willing to budget a lot more than usual and don’t mind tackling the crowds, where should you visit in Dubai this April?

Dubai Hotels & Attractions to Try Over Eid

No promises any of these will still have availability, but we’re still seeing promotions this week for:

Centara Mirage Beach Resort – Perfect for families, the new Thai all-inclusive offering is found on Deira Islands. Facilities include lagoon pools and a lazy river kid’s splash area, waterslides and a cliff jump platform, a ropes course, and of course kid kid-friendly dining. You’re looking at around 2,000AED per night, but remember, this is all-inclusive.

The Oberoi Beach Resort, Al Zorah – Situated in Ajman, just 25 minutes from Dubai International Airport, is a fabulous and relatively unknown beachfront escape in the UAE, away from the crowds of Dubai. The Oberoi Beach Resort Al Zorah offers that perfect blend of relaxation and activities. There are private villas with their own pool, and you can enjoy the Oberoi Spa or water sports activities along the white sandy beach.

Be warned, in addition to advertised headline prices for hotels and resorts, you have tourism taxes and municipality charges to add on. We discuss exactly what Dubai tourist taxes to expect over here.

Tip for tackling DXB Airport over Eid

Come early and still be prepared to wait! Even with all checkouts and bag drops open at DXB, you’ll find even the road approaching the airport becomes log jammed with traffic; taxies and chauffeurs desperately trying to get their clients to the airport on time when the wide-open freeways narrow to just a few lanes; it can be chaos.

We highly recommend if you are flying over Eid:

• If possible, take the Metro instead of driving to DXB to avoid congestion and prevent being late for your flight.

• Try and use the Dubz Bag Check-in home collection service in advance of your flight so you do not need to tackle the baggage drop. Investing in Fast Track could also alleviate more of your airport stress.

• Expect the executive airport lounges at DXB could be full; even if your ticket or credit card entitles you to a seat, they’ll close the doors when they’re at capacity. Some come with a pre-flight alternative plan if you usually hunker down in an exec lounge at DXB.

• Landing into DXB? Avoid the queues for a taxi and book yourself a Welcome Pickup door-to-door driver service who’ll be waiting there for you at the airport to complete your transfer.

As we discussed in this article, there is no Metro between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.  If you are seeking a public transport option between the UAE’s two largest cities, then you need the Intercity Bus from Dubai to Abu Dhabi. This is by far the cheapest option, although not the quickest!

What should I expect on board the Dubai to Abu Dhabi Bus?

These public buses are pretty luxurious in the scheme of things. They are air-conditioned, have information screens, priority seating for women, children, and the disabled, and priority boarding lines.

Do be prepared to turn up early for your chosen service as queues can start forming, and once the bus is full, doors need to close, and you’ll wait for the next scheduled service.

What does the bus from Abu Dhabi to Dubai cost?

All bus fares are 25 AED one way.  Customers can use a NOL card or pay cash at the bus station in Al Wadha.

There is no pre-booking, you turn up on the day and pay as you board.

Paid AUH Shuttle

An Abu Dhabi Airport shuttle service – AUH Express – was launched in September 2022 for passengers travelling between AUH Zayed International Airport and Dubai. Again, it’s not an airport-to-airport service but will get passengers from Ibn Battuta directly to AUH.

It costs 35 AED, one way to buy at the bus counter or from the ticket machine (Stand 11 at Ibn Battuta) – learn more about this Abu Dhabi to Dubai service here.

Check availability for the AUH Express here – NB if you miss the booked time, there’s no problem catching the next scheduled service.

NB – at the time of last updating this guide, AUH Express seems to have removed the ability to buy online in advance

When will Emirates offer Premium Economy seats?

You will be able to book Premium Economy seats on Emirates from 1 June 2022, for flights on or after 1 August 2022.

Which Emirates routes will offer Premium Economy?

At this stage, the new cabins will be found on Emirates’ most popular routes, including:

• London Heathrow
• Paris Charles de Gaulle
• Sydney
• Christchurch (coming in December 2022)

This won’t be the end of the Premium Economy rollout. Emirates has indicated that they will be retrofitting 67 A380s and 53 Boeing 777s in their fleet, so more options to come for long-haul economy travellers.

What can guests expect in Emirates Premium Economy?

The new cabin class will offer luxurious leather seats, more legroom, and service that is set to challenge many airlines’ equivalent business class offerings.

Seats on Emirates Premium Economy

It’s not quite a flatbed but you’ll get a lot more recline room than the standard economy seats at 8″. The pitch is up to 40″ and seat width 19.5″. Enjoy calf rests and footrests for additional comfort in the sky.

The signature wood panelling you see in Business Class will also be offered in Premium Economy, along with 6-way adjustable headrests, accessible in-seat charging points, and a side cocktail table.

The new A380 aircraft will consist of 4 cabins, with Premium Economy at the front of the lower deck (the upper deck is still exclusive to Business and First Class passengers, but hey, at least you get to be at the pointy end!)

Seats will be in a 2-4-2 configuration (vs standard economy 3-4-3) and Premium Economy will have priority on disembarking.

The only con we can see that impacts more on family travellers; due to the side table fitting in your armrest, you won’t have moveable arms for kids to be able to lie flat across the row. (And per Emirates policy, sleeping devices for kids such as the Bed Box are not allowed).

Food, Service & Entertainment on Emirates Premium Economy

As close as you can to Business Class service, Premium Economy guests on Emirates will be welcomed on board with a drink, and a generous selection of meals will be on offer, served on chinaware with real metal cutlery! The drinks selection on board with Emirates Premium Economy will include premium wines and sparkling Chandon, along with liqueurs and chocolates.

Each seat is fitted with an incredible 13.3″ screen and you’ll have full access to the airline’s acclaimed ICE programming – this includes over 5000 channels of music, movies, and TV shows. Premium Economy on Emirates will also offer higher-speed wifi (though we understand still paid).

Premium Economy Passengers will also get an exclusive check-in area when flying out of DXB (we await news if any privileges or special check-ins will operate at other airports in due course).

What will Premium Economy on Emirates cost?

This is still a bit of a surprise, we’ll wait to see flights going on sale to confirm.

It will obviously vary significantly by route, but we’re led to believe it will be about 30-50% more than a standard economy ticket for Emirates – but please do wait until fares are announced in June!

Travel during COVID-19 times is never straightforward, even within countries. With the health and safety of residents and tourists front of mind, the situation for freely moving around the 7 Emirates of the UAE remains dynamic.

Border crossing point between Dubai and Abu Dhabi

In the ever-changing post-COVID world, there have been several periods of time where a police border crossing checkpoint was placed between Dubai and Abu Dhabi emirates. Since July 2020, each Emirate has pursued a slightly different approach to reopening international borders and ongoing testing requirements to conquer the spread of COVID-19.

We’re delighted to announce that free movement is again permitted domestically in the UAE without any border checkpoint or testing requirements from 28 FEBRUARY 2022. (Swipe left for English)

Please note that whilst you can now cross the domestic border without going through a police checkpoint, there are still slightly different COVID rules in Abu Dhabi. Primarily, a “Green Alhosn” is required for entry into public buildings and spaces.

7 NOVEMBER 2022: Almost all COVID restrictions for Abu Dhabi emirate have now been abolished, including the need to wear a face mask and Green Pass on Al Hosn – read the latest update for Abu Dhabi visitors here.

This border-crossing guide was first published in July 2020 and has undergone many iterations. Whilst border crossings have long been removed, we have left this article for prosperity and reference.

Dubai to Abu Dhabi border crossing rules prior to February 2022

Once an incredibly simple process to cross from Dubai into neighbouring emirate Abu Dhabi, the world changed for the Emirates on 22 June 2020 when precautionary health measures saw Abu Dhabi shut off its domestic border with Dubai.

The restrictions have eased, however, a border checkpoint remains in place restricting movement into Abu Dhabi emirate. 

All drivers and passengers of private vehicles over the age of 12 must present a negative COVID-19 test result – DPI or PCR – in order to cross from the emirate of Dubai into the emirate of Abu Dhabi, plus undergo subsequent nasal PCR testing if they remain in Abu Dhabi [this step now abolished].

Border testing travelling from Dubai into Abu Dhabi

Here’s what you need to know before crossing from Dubai into Abu Dhabi.

The difference between a PCR and a DPI Coronavirus test

There are two different types of coronavirus testing that are currently accepted for passing the border between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

In order to cross the police checkpoint that has been set up across the highway, you will need to provide evidence (an SMS screenshot of your test result will suffice) that you are COVID-19 negative. This can be from a PCR or DPI test result.

A PCR is a Polymerase Chain Reaction test – in the UAE conducted via a nasal swab test that takes, on average 24 hours for the results to be returned, though this can vary. You should plan a PCR test at least 24 hours in advance of when you wish to cross from Dubai into Abu Dhabi.

A laser-based DPI test (Diffractive Phase Interferometry) is a pin-prick test on your finger that picks up signals of infection and allows for quicker mass-testing, the result is almost instant.

At present, you are allowed to take either of these two tests in any part of the UAE. From 19 July 2021, you have 48 hours to cross into Abu Dhabi with a negative PCR result or 24 hours from receiving a DPI result. You cannot use the DPI method on consecutive crossings.

You will need to present a photo ID – be it your Emirates ID card (EID) or a passport with your test result, with your name in Arabic or English.

Rapid testing centre at Ghantoot [abolished]

Just over the border on the E11 Freeway that connects the two cities, you will come to the area of Ghantoot. If you are NOT already in possession of a negative test result, pull off the freeway here, it will be very clearly signposted.

There are now separate places to go for:

1. Overseas visitors/returning residents with a valid PCR result who need fitting with a tracker (more on this below) and
2. UAE residents looking to undertake rapid DPI test, per conditions below

NB – The Al Faya Road facility is a new drive-through testing station open 24/7, the large tent to the right is no longer offering DPI testing, it only deals with international arrivals.

You will need an Emirates ID card (EID) and will need to contactless pay 50 AED per person (testing only applies to those in your vehicle aged 12 and over). You no longer need to book in advance.

Because of the need for an EID as part of the testing process, instant DPI testing is NOT available to non-UAE residents.  They may use a PCR result instead, but be mindful if you’ve come from overseas the result can be no more than 48 hours old.

New overseas arrivals into Abu Dhabi are also subject to strict self-quarantine measures, more below.

You should have the Al Hosn app installed on your phone.  The two staff testing you (one entering your details and one actually doing the prick test) will ask you to confirm your mobile number. You will be instantly sent a result which indicators either “no swab” or “swab”.

“No swab”= keep driving, you’ve tested negative. Keep your phone handy as it’s only a few kilometres back on the E11 or E311 Highway until you hit the police checkpoint and will need to show this result.

“Swab” = If a follow-up swab is required, they will do this on the spot (a PCR test) in the testing tent. 

We have heard varying stories on whether you are then allowed to cross the border and self-quarantine while you wait for the result.  It appears some leniency being shown with families who live in Abu Dhabi and can prove their residency, otherwise expect to be turned back to Dubai until a PCR confirms whether you are actually positive or not – a PCR is far more accurate than a DPI test which may pick up other infections.

NB there are several border crossings into Abu Dhabi from Dubai by road.  The only border where a DPI testing tent can be found is just off the E11 on Al-Faya Road.

The E11 Highway from Dubai to Abu Dhabi has now been widened at the border checkpoint with many more lanes to speed up the border crossing process; it includes automatic number plate reading.

To add one more layer of complication, if someone is borrowing your vehicle (even if it’s your spouse who ordinarily drives the vehicle), be warned the police system may assume it is you, the owner that has crossed the border. You may receive the day 4/8 warning by text or a flat out fine for not re-testing even if you yourself never crossed the border!

Testing in advance of border crossing into Abu Dhabi

If you are unable to get a rapid DPI testing appointment at the border, or you’d rather not chance being turned away if it’s busy, you should get your PCR or DPI test performed in advance, in any emirate.

The SEHA App will give users access to booking a PCR or DPI at any of the designated Government testing centres around the UAE. These may also book up well in advance of weekends and public holidays so you should plan your trip carefully.

Results from private testing labs at hospitals and clinics in the UAE can also be accepted. These may cost more than using the SEHA service (though in our experience, many of the private labs are now cheaper – eg 85 AED). Emirates shares this list of approved testing centres in Dubai.

What happens next – subsequent testing in Abu Dhabi [abolished]

The rules on subsequent testing, once you are in Abu Dhabi Emirate, have changed numerous times and depend on your vaccination status.

If you are unvaccinated or do not have your vaccination status on the Alhosn App:

Entering Abu Dhabi on a PCR test? You will need to be re-tested by PCR if you stay in Abu Dhabi for 4 consecutive days, and again on day 8 if you stay 8 consecutive days.

Enter Abu Dhabi on a DPI test? You will need to be re-tested by PCR if you stay in Abu Dhabi for 3 consecutive days, and again on day 7 if you stay 7 consecutive days. You cannot use a DPI on consecutive border crossings. If you fail to do so, you will be fined.

Subsequent testing in Abu Dhabi – exemptions

The exemption for subsequent testing for vaccinated individuals was reintroduced (It was briefly abolished from 15 July to 20 August 2021).

If an “E” or Gold Star appear in your Al Hosn App, you only need one PCR test to cross the border and do not need to follow up with the Day 4/8 (PCR) or Day 3/7 tests (DPI). (Swipe left for English)

Abu Dhabi COVID-19 Rules [still current – capacity limites have increased]

Abu Dhabi authorities introduced the “Green Pass” on 20 August 2021.

Essentially, the Green Pass is electronic evidence of your vaccine and PCR status, required to enter most public places. You will require the Al Hosn App on a smartphone to display your Green Pass.

To keep your Green Pass active, vaccinated individuals must take a PCR test every 14 days.

How to register your overseas vaccine in the Al Hosn App

These are the instructions as detailed by the Abu Dhabi Emergency, Crisis & Disasters Committee:

Arriving in to Abu Dhabi from overseas [being updated]

Rules have changed again from 26 February 2022 including abolishing the “Green List”- the information below dates from the last major update on 15 August 2021 – we’re seeking clarity and will update this section soon

If you are a new arrival into Abu Dhabi from overseas (whether a Resident visa holder or a tourist) these rules apply, regardless of which airport you land in.

• Passengers must present a negative COVID test result (valid within 72 hours) before boarding a flight (Under 12’s and those with disabilities are exempt).
• On arriving in Abu Dhabi, at either AUH airport or the International Arrivals tent at the border if flying in to DXB, you will be given a further PCR test. (Expect this process to take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours depending how busy they are).
• Quarantine requirements will depend on the country of origin. A tiered system has been introduced:
  • Visitors from “Green List” countries will be exempt from quarantine, once they get a negative COVID test result on arrival, this may take 24 hours. PCR Testing is required again on Day 6 (and again on Day 9 if unvaccinated).
  • Arrivals from all other countries into Abu Dhabi Emirate must self-quarantine for 10 days, either in a private home, hotel or accommodation provided by the authorities. Testing is required again on Day 9, you will get a tracker watch fitted until your final PCR result.
  • If you are non-green list but vaccinated, this self-quarantine period is reduced to 7 days with a follow-up PCR test on Day 6.

If you first arrived in Dubai or any other airport in the UAE and do not immediately cross the land border you will still need to complete the balance of your time in self-quarantine, per Government guidance below (Swipe left for English):

Prior to the border closure, Abu Dhabi was an easy day trip from Dubai. If you meet all of the testing requirements, there is still no problem visiting Abu Dhabi as a side trip.

Most tour operators are up and running again, offering both group tours and private tours from Dubai to Abu Dhabi for the day. The Dubai to Abu Dhabi bus service is partially back up and running.

Taxies can take passengers across the border with the right documentation, with a maximum of 3 or 4 passengers, depending on the vehicle type.

Prices will be variable depending on the season (remembering peak season for Dubai runs from November through to April – the cooler winter months).

• As an example, a family of five staying in March 2022 can expect to pay from AED 1845++ for one night in a themed room with breakfast and theme park access included. (Bunk bed + King Bed + trundle)

• Upgrading to a suite a larger suite, prices start from AED 3,630++ (2 bunks, double bed + sofa bed)

Legoland Dubai Hotel – How to get there

Legoland Dubai Resort is part of the giant Dubai Parks and Resorts complex, situated to the west of the city in an area known as Jebel Ali.

There is no door-to-door Metro connection to the parks as yet, so international guests can either hire a car and self-drive, take a taxi, or take the Metro as far as Ibn Battuta station and transfer to local bus service or taxi.

What else can you enjoy at LEGOLAND Dubai?

In addition to the hotel and two LEGO theme parks in Dubai, Dubai Parks & Resorts is also home to Bollywood Parks Dubai and Motiongate Dubai.

Schools, Dubai Government agencies, and many local businesses have said they will also look to follow the new 4.5-day working week.

Private sector firms can decide if they follow suit, as long as they abide by labour laws and workers work no more than 48 hours a week with a minimum of one day off.

This is a huge change for a country that has been working on a 5-day public sector work week, Sunday to Thursday, since 2006.

The history of weekends in Dubai

This is not the first time the weekend has changed in Dubai!

From the country’s formation in 1971 to 1999, the UAE had a 6-day working week, with only Fridays granted as a Government day off. Thursday was added as a weekend in 1999 to give a two-day public sector weekend.

Until 2006, the 2-weekend was observed on Thursday and Friday in the UAE. As you can imagine, in an increasingly global market, this caused issues with a lack of overlap in business hours with global markets.

The weekend was therefore changed to Friday and Saturday from 1 September 2006; the UAE was among the first of the Gulf countries to make this change. Others, such as Saudi Arabia, followed suit some eight years later, in 2013.

The UAE Government Media office explained that the decision to change the weekend to 2.5 days “will better align the Emirates with global markets, reflecting the country’s strategic status on the global economic map”. The announcement also aims to “boost productivity and improve work-life balance”.

The decision to change the weekend will not change the scheduled public holidays for the UAE in 2022.

Will I get the day off now on Saturday/Sunday?

For those working in Dubai, it depends on what sort of work you do. Many manual labour and domestic workers in Dubai traditionally only get one day off a week – usually, a Friday.

The move has caused conjecture on what the labourer “day off” is; there is no uniform answer for this across sectors. Some are sticking with Friday; others are giving workers either Saturday or Sunday as their “off”, with a break for prayer time if required on a Friday.

Those working for Government departments or schools will move to the 4.5-day week effective from Sunday, 2 January 2022 (with 1 January already being a public holiday).

Dhuhr Prayer times in the UAE have been moved to 1.15 PM on a Friday to accommodate the change in business hours.

Why does the weekend in Dubai matter?

Many Dubai attractions and restaurants are exceptionally busier on weekends than on weekdays. Tourists will notice the biggest change that Friday AND Saturday nights will now be the busiest at venues across the city.

Most tourist attractions will now likely adjust their opening hours to reflect the new work week.

Are the weekends busier in Dubai?

Absolutely, compared to the rest of the week, Thursday night through to Saturday historically are much busier at tourist attractions, hotels and restaurants.

As a tourist, you may prefer to hit many attractions midweek to avoid the crowds, though, of course, the weekends can also be when the action happens!

Be careful when planning your tour itinerary of Dubai to keep the new weekend days in mind. Although the ruling was brought in at a Federal Government level, all the Emirates have followed suit (in fact, Sharjah has moved to a 4-day week!)

School Days in Dubai

In line with the change in the Government work week, KHDA announced that schools in Dubai will follow the Government in implementing a 4.5-day week, Monday to Friday morning.
