Whilst the scene of 4×4 crashing their way through the dunes in Dubai might be a familiar one, understandably, for many, this is not their idea of fun, nor the most environmentally-friendly approach to seeing and experiencing the Dubai desert.

Understanding that this rich desert eco system needs to be protected, the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve was established in 2003. Covering an area of 225 square kilometres (nearly 5% of the Dubai Emirate), the area was designated as the country’s first National Park.

It can certainly be confusing establishing which company to use when you see an endless list of Dubai desert tours advertised, so we have helped you here by picking out the tours on popular booking platforms Get Your Guide and Viator that are, in fact, based in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve rather than other parts of the Dubai desert.

Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve Visitor Centre

A relatively new addition to DDCR is the Visitor Centre. Accessible by standard 2WD vehicles at the entrance to the park, you can find it here:

The DDCR Visitor Centre welcomes you to learn more about the indigenous fauna and flora of the Reserve and how they are working to protect the fragile ecosystem of the UAE’s first National Park.

You are guided through interactive displays and audio presentations. Children will enjoy the interactive Arabian Hare guiding their journey, and there’s plentiful information on the native species, from mammals and reptiles to insects and birds that frequent the reserve.

Finish your journey with views of the reserve from the rooftop deck and refreshments from the on-site Costa coffee shop.

The walk-in entry feee for the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve Visitor Centre is:

Sonara Camp

Sonara Camp, run by Nara, offers evening desert safaris, dinner, and luxury overnight camps. The meeting point for that self-driving is at the DDCR Visitor Centre, or most visitors will use their door-to-door pickup service from the city.

The dinner experience runs from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and includes a sedate desert drive, an interactive hawk show, camel rides, soft archery, live entertainment, and a fire show. Kids can also enjoy a movie under the stars.

Those staying overnight will return to The Nest, which has unique luxury glamping tents nestled into the dunes. Each tent can accommodate a maximum of 4 guests and has eco-friendly ensuites. Overnight experiences start from AED 2650 per Nest.

They also have adaptions of their program for sunset only and dinner only – enquiries should be made directly with Nara (they’re not to be found on your normal online booking platforms so may have escaped your attention!)

Curious as to what animals can survive and thrive in the extreme desert conditions of Dubai? You may be surprised by just how many native species you’ll find in Dubai – from the Persian Gulf waters to the desert and mountainous regions of the United Arab Emirates.

Where to Experience Camels in Dubai

Camels are most likely the animal that first comes to mind when imagining a trip to Dubai. A domesticated rather than wild animal, these “Ships of the Desert” are much-revered creatures in the UAE; Emiratis are proud and passionate about their camels, which were introduced into the Arabian Peninsula over 2000 years ago.

An important part of traditional Bedouin life, camels have historically not only been a source of food for their milk and meat but also a form of transportation; their hair can be woven for shelter, and they are a form of currency and status. Camels found in the Arabian Peninsula are dromedaries – single-humped camels.

The easiest and most practical way to see a camel in Dubai and even opt into camel rides is to take a desert safari during your stay in Dubai (we’ll explain more below). Alternatively, you could also look to:

• Attend a camel race at Al Marmoom camel race track – wake early to catch the trackside action with robotic jockeys, and a lot of sound colour and 4×4’s too!
• Visit the Camel Farm and engage in some camel hug therapy! Longer treks and other hands-on experiences are available at this dedicated camel experience location, just outside of the city.
• Take a camel ride along the beach at JBR – yes, it’s touristy, but if time is limited, this is your best chance to catch a camel ride close to town.

Outdoor Sanctuaries in Dubai & the UAE

The best way to experience wildlife in Dubai is, of course, to get out into the “wild”. You don’t have to travel as far as you may think, though, for wildlife experiences in Dubai.

Here are three of the key locations we recommend you seek out in Dubai for true wildlife spotting experiences:

1. Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve

This protected desert area to the south of Dubai covers an expanse of 225 square kilometres – about 5% of the Emirate. Only a limited number of licensed tour and hospitality companies can operate within this national park of sand dunes and gravel plains, managed by Emirates.

This includes popular premium Dubai tour company Platinum Heritage, newcomers 57 Safari, and ultra-luxurious glamping options, including Sonara Camp and Al Maha – A Luxury Collection Desert Resort and Spa.

Within DDCR, you can spot mammals such as the Arabian Oryx, Arabian Gazelle and Arabian Red Fox. You will also see several species of geckos and sand lizards, sand snakes and the much larger Desert Monitor and Lappet-faced Vulture.

The DDCR also has an excellent visitor centre where you can learn much more about the UAE’s native flora and fauna. You can pop into the visitor centre (accessible by taxi or any 2WD vehicle) from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily.

2. Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary

Sitting remarkably close to the city, part of the Dubai Creek estuary, the sanctuary is home to a huge number of migratory birds. Best known for its flamingoes, but up to 180 species either permanently live in the waters or pass through. Not just birds, there are numerous crustaceans, fish and reptiles that reside in this designated nature reserve.

It is free for the public to go and use the hides in Ras Al Khor for bird spotting but you must now book in advance and bring your own binoculars.

3. Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve

Another large, unfenced reserve within Dubai Emirate is the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve. Covering over 10% of Dubai Emirate, this area incorporates the Al Qudra Lake system, which includes the utterly instagrammable “Love Lakes.” Whilst on the surface, it may seem gimmicky, the lakes are, in fact, an incredibly important part of the Emirate’s conservation effort.

Although the lakes themselves are man-made, they are now home to over 170 species of migratory birds and reptiles.

It’s possible to camp for free at Al Qudra Lakes, though be warned, due to the ease of accessibility to these campgrounds, they can be rather noisy and busy, especially at winter weekends. Most other times, though, you should be able to park up at the lakes and enjoy a serene experience surrounded by nature.

The Green Planet

A tropical rainforest eco dome found adjacent to City Walk, The Green Planet brings an equatorial rainforest into the heart of the city. Spread out over four layers of the forest, the dome is dominated by a self-sustaining artificial tree. As you descend through the rainforest, meet birds, snakes, insects and the beloved sloth in this incredible educational experience.

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo

Found inside the very middle of Dubai Mall, the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo is one of the city’s most spectacular indoor attractions. The giant suspended tank can be viewed from outside for free, or venture inside for the tunnel, boat ride and many more hands-on experiences and marine encounters.

The Lost Chambers Aquarium

An equally impressive marine display can be found at the Lost Chambers, part of the extensive complex at Atlantis, The Palm. Visitors staying at the hotel will have free access to the aquarium, or there are several cafes and restaurants with great views for drop-in visitors, even a romantic dining option and an underground suite!

Best Animal Experiences Beyond Dubai

If you have time to see some more of the country some top spots we’d recommend you make time to see;

Jubail Mangrove Park and Eastern Mangroves

Also in Abu Dhabi emirate, you’ll find these two wetland reserves close to the city. Each would make an excellent addition to any Abu Dhabi day tour or city break adventure in the capital. Both Jubail Mangrove Park and the Mangrove National Park, found at Eastern Mangroves, can be accessed by watercraft such as kayaks and e-boats.

The advantage of visiting Jubail Mangrove Park is the extensive wooden boardwalk that extends over the mangroves, allowing visitors an up-close interaction with the marine life beneath. Signage throughout helps visitors understand the importance of the mangrove ecosystem.

Wild Dolphins in Musandam

You need to head up into the remote and mountainous Omani enclave of Musandam for this experience. It is well worth the drive and border crossing experience for one of the most incredible nature experiences of a lifetime.

From the regional capital of Khasab, take a small boat out to the waters of Kumzar, almost at the Strait of Hormuz and wild dolphins are almost guaranteed to pop along and join your journey.

We won’t go so far as to say all of them will be to everyone’s taste. What is Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo

One of the largest aquariums in the world, the Dubai Mall Aquarium – officially called the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo (DAUZ) – is located within The Dubai Mall.

The aquarium houses over 140 species of aquatic life, including over 400 Sharks and Rays. It’s more than just a water tank. It’s an experience spread over different levels, complete with animal encounters and diving experiences.

Starting off at this 10 million litre tank and in front of the world’s largest aquarium viewing panel is where you will find the largest collection of Sand Tiger Sharks and schools of Giant Groupers, a marine ray-finned fish. Time your visit around 2:00 pm, and watch the resident divers dive into this large aquarium to feed the sharks.

Next, access the 48-metre walk-through Aquarium tunnel with a 270-degree panoramic view.  It’s the best vantage point for seeing some of the most incredible aquatic animals swim overhead while feeling submerged, and also for getting some of the best photos to show family and friends.

Another way to experience the sharks and rays at the aquarium is to take the glass-bottom boat rides. It’s a 10-minute ride, where you sit back and relax on a boat while enjoying a bird’s eye view of the largest aquarium in the world. To access this ride, you need to move on to the second level, where the Underwater Zoo is located.

At the Underwater Zoo, you will find three different ecological zones set up – the Rainforest, Rocky Shore and Living Ocean. It’s where you will spot friendly otters, have exotic parrots flying overhead, spot piranhas, see giant-sized spider crabs in water tanks, touch a starfish, be mesmerised by the colourful coral reefs and so much more.

This is also home to the undisputed star, the 5.1m-long Australian saltwater crocodile, weighing almost 750 kgs, named King Croc, along with his female companion.

Local to UAE, also present are the nocturnal desert animals, such as the fruit bats, barn owls and gerbils, that you can spot in the low light caved zone.

Top Tip: If you are able to time your visit right, you may spot regular feeding sessions take place for Rays at 10:30 am, Otters at 2:30 pm, Piranhas at 2:45 pm and King Croc at 3:00 pm. (Timings may be subject to change)

Top Experiences at Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo

Once inside the aquarium, there’s a great list of animal encounters available to choose from, in addition to your basic entry ticket. Most are an additional AED 100 per person.

Penguin Encounter

Interact with a cute bunch of Antarctic Gentoo Penguins in the Penguin Cove. The cove is a purpose-built temperature-controlled facility, which replicates the Subantarctic environmental conditions, including the air temperature and their annual light cycle.

Step into a penguin- riendly terrain with temperatures up to 2 degrees as you learn about their fascinating natural behaviours, get up-close and personal, and also take lots of pictures with them.

King Croc Encounter

Not an encounter as close as the penguins, but considering the size of these sharp-teethed beasts, you will probably want to maintain a safe distance from them. Home to the impressive King croc and Queen croc, spend your time learning facts about these impressive cold- blooded creatures, such as their habitat, their dietary requirements and how much they weigh. Complete the experience by feeding these mighty crocodiles with complete safety measures in place.

Otter Encounter

Have the opportunity to get close to Asian small-clawed Otters, shake hands with them and learn various facts about their lifestyle. Watch these clever furry friends interact with their trainers and treat you to some cute moves.

Ray Encounter

Meet, touch and hand feed up to 50 sting rays at this exhilarating experience. Step into specially designed feeding platforms in waterproof gear, and enjoy the experience as these inquisitive, yet gentle creatures breach the water surface to grab the fish from your hands.

Shark Trainer Encounter

Stand in shallow tanks with your family, in your waist-high waterproof waders, as you experience interacting with sharks. Have the Bamboo Sharks and Leopard Sharks swim around you, as you learn how DAUZ takes care of them, complete from their feeding to breeding habits.

Shark Dives

Embark on a memorable diving experience as you swim up close and personal with Tiger Sharks, Reef Sharks, Leopard Sharks, Tawny Nurse Sharks, Giant Groupers and Stingrays. Don’t worry if you are not a certified scuba diver, as you can still experience the thrill of diving with sharks after completing a short Discover Scuba program with Al Boom Diving.

Cage Snorkelling

Similar to the scuba diving experience, but without the diving equipment and diving experience. Simply put on snorkelling gear, and feel the same thrills of getting close to sharks and rays in a safe cage setting. Participants need to be at least 8 years and older for this activity.

Shark Walker (Cage)

Put on an oxygenated helmet that allows you to breathe underwater and get close to the largest collection of sharks and other marine animals. Similar to the above activity, you will be suspended in a cage and won’t need any scuba diving experience. You can even film your experience using the DAUZ trainer’s GoPro, and have that memory to share with friends and family later.

Other Facilities at Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo

A visit to DAUZ is wheelchair and stroller friendly, with designated stroller parking areas too.

Toilets are accessible at Level 2 of the Underwater Zoo, and visitors can also access the toilets, baby changing facilities and prayer rooms of The Dubai Mall, at different levels.

There is a gift shop to purchase souvenirs, printed photos and videos of your experience.

The Dubai Mall Food court is also easily accessible from Level 2, in case you are feeling hungry, along with many cafes and restaurants to choose from.

• To get to The Dubai Mall by car: Take the first interchange and proceed through Financial Centre Road (formerly Doha Street), and follow signs to The Dubai Mall.

• To get to The Dubai Mall by Metro: Make a stop at the Burj Khalifa/The Dubai Mall station (Red Line), which is within a walkable distance from The Dubai Mall by using the Metro Link Bridge.

• To get to The Dubai Mall by Bus: Take bus route 27 from the Deira Gold Souk station or route 29 from Ghubaiba bus station which drop off in front of the Grand Drive Entrance, on the Lower Ground Floor of The Dubai Mall.

Al Barari Playground

This stunning nature spot in Dubai has gone from a hidden gem to a local favourite. Known for its adventure playground and relaxed setting, kids can enjoy water play to climbing, giant swings to pirate ships, even exploring the veggie patch, and all in the lush setting of luxury estate Al Barari.

Parents love the Hideout Lounge, where you can enjoy a beverage while the kids play. Plus, there are ice creams, burgers, and shawarma on hand if you want to grab a bite. Pre-booking for this luxury nature play park is essential, especially on weekends.

Al Barsha Park

A beautifully manicured 52-acre park set around a large man-made pond. You can hire pedal or solar-powered boats on the water, as well as pedal Go-Karts, bikes, and e-scooters for exercise around the park.

There are two park areas, suitable for toddlers and your older children, as well as plenty of grassy spaces for picnicking and a running track.

Al Ittihad Park

Found on the trunk of Palm Jumeirah, this is a long park that appears under a 3.2km stretch of the Palm Monorail. A great path for strollers and scooters, the park is spotted with playgrounds and water features, as well as fitness equipment, shops, and cafes you can stop at along the way. You may also hear this one referred to as Palm Jumeirah Park.

• Opening times: 24 hours

Al Khazzan Park

Centrally located opposite Dubai’s City Walk, the distinctive blue and white striped water tower is easy to pick out in this urban park.  There are two shaded play areas with swings, slides, and climbing frames for both toddlers and older children. A good spot for bringing your own picnic; look out for the small little children’s library here too.

• Opening times: 8.00 am to 10.00 pm Saturday to Wednesday & 8.00 am to 11.00 pm Thursday and Friday

Al Sufouh Park

Located in a quiet suburban area of the city between Hessa Street and Al Sufouh Road, you will find two children’s play park areas in this cosy little park. It’s better for your younger kids, but also includes a running track, sports courts, and a small coffee shop.

• Opening times: 8.00 am to 10.00 pm Saturday to Wednesday & 8.00 am to 11.00 pm Thursday and Friday

Al Wasl Park

Another small suburban hidden gem just off Wasl Road, Jumeirah 1. It is not huge, but enough space to unleash the kids on scooters and bikes as well as have a play in the partly shaded playground.

Bay Avenue Park

Bringing a touch of green to the otherwise concrete jungle of the Business Bay Area, the Bay Avenue Park includes two outdoor gyms, a skatepark, a trampoline area, and plenty of grassy spots where you can pull up a picnic rug, as well as obligatory playground equipment, mostly under shade.

A nearby Spinneys supermarket is perfect for picking up a bite to eat, and the park often hosts a farmers market and yoga in the park.

Dubai Creek Park

Situated on the western bank of Dubai Creek, this is one of the city’s larger outdoor spaces with plenty of extra facilities and entertainment to enjoy. It’s a popular spot for picnics and barbeques, as well as having a large botanical garden, mini-golf and a go-kart track. There are several children’s playgrounds dotted around the park.

For added extras within the park, check out the Dolphinarium and Children’s City, an edutainment and learning centre including Planetarium. In the winter, the Creek Cable Cars run daily across the park (summertime evenings only).

Dubai Garden Glow & Dinosaur Park

A seasonal event held within Zabeel Park in the winter months, watch dinosaurs roar to life and the park light up each night with colourful neon creations.

A pricier evening than most of our parks, but definitely fun for a special treat and one of the top park experiences we recommend to our visitors. The dinosaurs are very realistic, so watch for long kids who may be scared.

Dubai Hills Park

One of Dubai’s most incredible new community parks, you’ll find this modern, multi-use park inside Dubai Hills Estate. With 1800 trees, it brings a refreshing splash of green to the suburbs; open to all, you’ll find a huge variety of play parks and sports courts to suit all different age groups.

• Facilities: Splash park, skate park, ice rink, dog park, sports courts, playgrounds, restrooms

Dubai Miracle Garden

The largest flower garden in the world by the total number of blooms sits just outside of the city. Follow a magical maze of pathways between floral and topiary creations, larger-than-life cartoon characters, creatures, and famous sites turned into floral arrangements. The centrepiece of the park is an incredible floral A380 Emirates aircraft.

The garden has plenty of eateries, beautiful swings, and play spaces, as well as relaxing swings. Enjoy some lovely family snaps, though do get there early to beat the crowds and heat.

Jaddaf Waterfront

One of the newer entrants on our list of exciting parks in Dubai, this park is part of the Manazel Al Khor waterfront complex on Dubai Creek, which includes the Jameel Arts Centre. Its claim to fame is as Dubai’s first open-air art park, including the Jaddaf Waterfront Sculpture Park and interactive experiences for kids to enjoy.

Check out the “green wall” and the playground area for younger ones. The park includes tables with board games such as chess and an amphitheatre for film screenings and live performances.

JLT Park

This is a great little patch of green for the Jumeirah Lake Towers community to explore amongst the urban jungle between clusters O and P. There are three different shaded playground zones for different age groups, as well as a large spider web climbing frame and zip line.

Plenty of grassy areas to enjoy, and in the cooler months, you will find food, music and open-air cinema amongst a packed entertainment lineup.

JLT Dog Park

Got a 4 legged friend? Then this is the one for you. Located in Cluster H, the JLT Dog park provides a safe space where highrise-dwelling residents in Jumeirah Lake Towers can safely head with their pets for some off-leash fun and exercise, including a sandpit, open green spaces, and seating.

Jumeirah Beach Park

Another of Dubai’s recently redeveloped parks, beautifully manicured gardens meet the beachfront in the Jumeirah area of the city. There are plentiful spots to pull up for a picnic, as well as barbeque facilities and children’s playgrounds.

Love Lake Dubai

One of Dubai’s more unique parks, you will actually find this beautiful spot of Dubai buried deep in the desert! Well worth the drive, you will be rewarded with a lovely walking/running track that circumnavigates the man-made Love Lakes in Al Qudra, Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve.

Pack a picnic or use the designated BBQ spots. Snap away at the park’s many insta-worthy features and enjoy the tranquillity of this eco-spot.

Mamzar Beach Park

This beautiful beach park in Dubai is located on the Deira side of Dubai Creek. As well as swimming and water sports, a large green park is attached with everything from kids’ play equipment to picnicking spaces and jogging tracks.

Lifeguards are on duty as well as change facilitates, and small chalets can be rented on a daily basis.

Mushrif Park

One of the city’s oldest nature parks, you are in for quite a different experience from the normally perfectly manicured city parks. Busy on winter weekends, this is one of the best parks in Dubai for family gatherings and barbeques.

You will find a huge range of facilities from bike tracks to sports fields, camel and horse riding, a model house display village, a children’s games area, playgrounds, restaurants, and even a miniature train service. There are also public swimming pools for men, women and children (additional charge) and Aventura Parks, a ziplining course through the Ghaf forest.

Nad al Sheba Cycle Park

A park dedicated to cyclists and fitness enthusiasts, you will find Nad al Sheba Cycle Park adjacent to Meydan Race Course (a converted camel racing track!). There are 4km, 6km, and 8km circuits suitable for beginners through to pros in this lush green spot. There is also a special track for younger children to teach them about road safety.

Quranic Park

This beautiful new park in the Al Khawaneej area of the city is dedicated to the Holy Quran. Covering 60 acres, the park is open to all faiths, although do note it’s a family park, and you should be appropriately dressed.

Inside, you’ll find the Lake, the Orchards, and the Cave of Miracles – with interactive displays (in Arabic). Then, there is a glasshouse that displays plants mentioned in the Holy Quran. There are also play parks and food carts inside.

Safa Park 2

Another of Dubai’s wonderful little community park, it can be found just off Al Manara Street. The park has three different play areas with lots of shade for picnics, a small food kiosk and toilets. It is fairly quiet during the week and spring to life full of families on weekends.

The Block

A sensational new outdoor space on the waterfront of Dubai Creek. With a little something for everyone, The Block is part of Dubai Design District D3 Park. It features a skate park, basketball and volleyball courts, climbing walls, and traditional play equipment.

You have a great selection of restaurants and cafes nearby in the Design Quarter, so a superb one for grabbing a cuppa and pulling up a seat while the kids play.

Umm Suqeim Park

(Also commonly referred to as Burj Beach Park). Situated close to Sunset Beach, this beautifully landscaped park is the perfect urban family escape, popular with locals and expats alike. During the week, it is women only, and at weekends men can visit with family.

There is a playground suitable for slightly older children, as well as a cafe and toilets within the grounds.

Zabeel Park

Anantara Desert Islands Resort & Spa (Abu Dhabi Emirate)

Where do you find Anantara Desert Islands Resort & Spa

Located on Sir Bani Yas Island, to the west of Abu Dhabi, you take the E11 from Dubai, continue past Abu Dhabi city, and turn off at Ruwais for the Jebel Dhanna Jetty. This journey takes about 3 hours. From Jebel Dhanna, a luxury ferry makes the 20-minute journey across to Sir Bani Yas Island, and it’s another 15-minute minivan journey across the island to your resort – all transfers from the port included.

What to expect at Anantara Desert Islands Resort & Spa

One of the most truly unique opportunities you will get on a Dubai trip is heading west of the UAE. Sir Bani Yas Island is home to one of the country’s largest nature reserves. Along with the main hotel resort complex on Sir Bani Yas, you can also enjoy a private luxury villa at one of their sister resorts on the island, Al Yamm Villa Resort and Al Sahel Villa Resort.

Where can you find Al Wadi Resort?

Al Wadi Desert Resort is accessible from the E311, about 90 km from Downtown Dubai and DXB airport. It’s just over the border into the Ras Al Khaimah Emirate, where the rolling red dunes start, about a one-hour drive from DXB. The hotel also offers a shuttle service directly from DXB airport, or private door-to-door transfers can be arranged.

What to expect at Al Wadi Desert Resort

Another beautiful and unique desert resort in the UAE, bathed in luxury and hands-on nature experiences. Perfect for families, couples, or a group of friends, the resort consists of 101 Bedouin-style individual villas, each with its own private pool.

Mysk Al Badayer Retreat (Sharjah)

Where do you find Mysk Al Badayer Retreat?

Situated just off the E44 on the Dubai to Hatta Road (Margham), Al Badayer is in the Emirate of Sharjah, approximately 40 minutes from Downtown Dubai.

What to expect at Mysk Al Badayer Retreat

A very new luxury tented camp, including breakfast and a swimming pool, is located technically in neighbouring Emirate Sharjah, as the borders crisscross inconspicuously across the desert. There are 21 on-site rooms and ten tents, making it a small and intimate luxury setting, as opposed to a sprawling resort, located close to “Big Red,” one of the country’s largest sand dunes.

Although it’s not as elaborate as some other examples, it is relatively close to the city and DXB airport, offering an attractive experience for first-timers seeking a unique desert getaway with charming Bedouin touches. You will still find on-site a health club, indoor pool, and a wellness focus to your visit, as well as outdoor recreation activities from desert safaris to camel trekking and quad biking.

Dining is at the Kulo Emirati restaurant or Caravan international eatery, and nightfall offers uninterrupted starlit skies in this utterly tranquil desert setting. (NB Sharjah is a dry Emirate; no alcohol is served.)

1. The Beach

When a beach is simply known as The Beach, you know it has to be awesome. This free beach in JBR, Dubai, has just about everything a person could ask for. It’s so much more than just your usual sun and sand if you like a city beach with a buzzing atmosphere.

For example, have you ever wanted to ride across the beach on a camel? You can do that here. Do you want to go jogging or practice yoga? You can do that, too. Maybe you want to do some shopping and grab a bite to eat. The Beach has you covered; its palm tree-lined promenade oozes beach vacation vibes!

Whilst anyone can pull up a towel on the beachfront in JBR and take a splash in the shallow waters, if you want to take advantage of the comfortable loungers at Sea Breeze, there’s a daily fee; or try the sensational new beach club area Bla Bla for day into evening beachfront partygoers.

For families, The Beach is also home to a giant inflatable water park Aqua Fun, and kids’ water playgrounds, The Splash Pad and a new inflatable installation by Splash n Party.

On top of all that, The Beach and adjacent The Walk are brilliant places for photography. Capture the street art or capture some iconic camels walking along the beach as the sun sets.

2. Al Mamzar Beach Park

Al Mamzar Beach Park is one of Dubai’s best beaches because it’s actually five beaches in one! On the Deira side of the city, all of these beaches are staffed with lifeguards. This is another great beach for children, with a playground, two pools, and a little train that crosses the entire park.

There’s plenty for adults to enjoy, too, at Al Mamzar Park. Beneath the palm trees, there are barbeques, multiple picnic areas, an outdoor gym, a jogging trail, and a bike path. You can even rent an air-conditioned chalet for the day! There are also showers, bathrooms, and changing rooms for beachgoers.

Keep in mind that Mondays and Wednesdays are Ladies’ Days – which means no boys or men over the age of six.

3. Jumeirah Beach

Jumeirah Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Dubai. That’s partially because it’s right next to Dubai’s downtown area. As a result, it’s very close to some of the city’s most important restaurants and hotels. Along with being an incredibly beautiful beach in its own right, it offers an excellent view of the legendary Burj Al Arab.

This beach also has lifeguards, showers, changing stations, and a jogging track. There’s even a library that allows you to borrow books. This is also a great beach for water sports, such as jet skiing and paddle boarding.

Please be aware that Mondays are for women and children only.

4. Black Palace Beach (Al Sufouh Beach){Temporarily Closed}

Temporarily closed: Barracades went up blocking the beach to the public in December 2023, for what we assumed was something connected to COP28 but it looks like this is a longer term closure – we really hope they don’t ruin the charm of this brilliantly simple beachfront

Black Palace Beach is also known as the Secret Beach, although with its increasing popularity, this name may no longer be appropriate!

It’s significantly less crowded than many of the other beaches on this list, and it can be somewhat challenging to find if you’re not from Dubai. You can get there by following a narrow pathway between the royal fortresses of Al Sufouh.

This beach is fully staffed with lifeguards at all times. Aside from that, it’s a fairly barebones experience. There are no showers, fancy changing rooms, or bathrooms. It’s just sun, sand, and one of the most spectacular views in all of Dubai. It’s perfect if you’re looking for a no-frills Dubai beach holiday.

5. Sunset Beach (Umm Suqeim Beach)

Sunset Beach is one of the most famous Dubai beaches, partially due to the Burj Al Arab Hotel’s presence in the background. That makes it a great location for Instagrammers (though construction work has blocked the marvellous views of late).

It’s also unique because it’s one of Dubai’s few surfing beaches. The surfing conditions are excellent for beginners, the perfect place to go in Dubai if you want to catch some waves.

Additionally, Sunset Park is just a short walk away from Umm Suqeim Park. It’s a great place to take kids for this reason. This beach has lifeguards, showers, and changing rooms. It even has Smart Palms that offer free Wifi, making it one of the best free public beaches in Dubai.

6. Kite Beach

Kite Beach is one of the most aptly named Dubai beaches. This beach is particularly windy and is very popular among kite fliers and kite surfers as a result. But that’s not all. This is also a great spot for watersports, such as kayaking and paddleboarding.

Additionally, this beach is famous for its array of food trucks and cafes – SALT being one of the city’s best burger joints. If you love food, then this is something you need to check out.

Furthermore, there’s beach volleyball, an outdoor gym, and a running track. It even has a free beach library! Kite Beach is equipped with plenty of facilities, including free showers and changing facilities, or for a fee, you can use the sunlounger facilities and beach umbrellas provided by Solemio.

A recent addition perfect for kids adjacent to the beach is Aqua Parks Leisure – a giant water obstacle course.

This is one of our favourite Dubai beaches for seeing the sunrise and sunset. It tends to be less frequented by tourists in a more suburban area of town.

• Open 24 hours every day, but there is no swimming after sundown.
• Entry fee: Free entry

9. Palm West Beach

Another relatively new kid on the block, Palm West Beach, sits on the western ‘trunk’ of Palm Jumeirah. The private beachfront is lined with luxury apartments, hotels, beach clubs and eateries.

The newly opened palm tree-lined boardwalk allows dogs on leashes and is open from sun up to sun down, with everything a beach-lover could want, from sunrise yoga classes to sundowner drinks.

You can hire ebikes here to enjoy along the boardwalk area, or why not pay a little extra to enjoy the beach from a comfortable lounger in one of the popular Dubai beach clubs?

La Mer {Temporarily Closed}

In early 2023, La Mer beach partially closed but it looks like the entire site is now being bulldozed for redevelopment as ‘J1 Beach‘. Stay tuned for what will replace this colourful and chilled beachfront location.

Dubai Travel Planner Team

La Mer is one of the sleekest Dubai public beaches and a favourite for Instagrammers worldwide. It’s also one of the best places to take your young kids to the beach in Dubai. It has a trampoline area for children, “Hawa Hawa”, and is home to boutique water action at Laguna Waterpark. This waterpark has five waterslides and a lazy river ride.

La Mer has plenty of other conveniences as well. It has a number of showers, changing rooms, and beachfront cabanas for rent. There are also plenty of restaurants and fast food places for when you need something to eat. You can even relax in an in-water hammock!

Where to find La Mer: 2 A Street. Open Sunday through Wednesday from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm and Thursday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 12:00 am.

Is Dubai Child Friendly?

In a word, ABSOLUTELY!

Dubai can be a family vacation paradise if you plan your trip well. And by this, we mean you need to pay careful attention to your seasons and your budget.

Emiratis themselves have large families, and family is central to everything they do. Much of the city’s modern attractions are built with the family in mind.

And a lot of Dubai’s attractions can be enjoyed for free or at very little cost. If you do start visiting several of the major theme parks and attractions, the costs will very quickly add up. We recommend you look at purchasing either a Dubai Pass or Dubai Go City All-inclusive or Explorer Pass to make some savings when visiting Dubai with kids.

So When Is The Best Time To Visit Dubai With Kids?

Dubai doesn’t really work on traditional seasons, more like hot, very hot and OMG can it seriously get that hot! 

This does mean the winters are very mild, but summers can be uncomfortable – but not impossible – for visiting with young kids.

We’d suggest the most pleasant time of the year for visiting as a family is between November and early April. Those who like their heat may still find it pleasant from October through to mid-May. Visiting during the traditional European school holiday periods over Christmas/New Year and Easter are the busiest times – and prices rise accordingly.

80+ Best Things To Do in Dubai With Kids

There are honestly so many things we could recommend to do with kids in Dubai that it’s hard to know where to start. To make it a little easier on you, we have summarised our mega list of attractions and things to do here, but read on for the exact details and where to find out more below:

Dubai’s Major Tourist Attractions

Dubai’s top tourist attractions are all winners with kids as well as adults, so don’t feel you need to plan an exclusively kid-centric itinerary for all of you to enjoy touring around Dubai. We will, however, pick out our favourite parts for kids, and any times and places you may want to avoid if you are travelling with children.

Burj Khalifa

Visiting the world’s tallest tower has got to be on every kid’s bucket list, right? Whether you plan to admire the Burj from beneath or ascend to the observation decks on levels 124 & 125, there are plenty of different ways to enjoy the world’s tallest builing and highest observation deck, the Burj Khalifa.

This is one Dubai attraction we do recommend booking a time slot in advance. Not only are advanced purchased tickets to At The Top significantly cheaper than buying them at the door, you can avoid some – but not all – of the queuing involved.

Primetime evening tickets, even with timed slots, can draw hefty queues, especially on local weekends; beware of this when planning to visit on a short stopover. You’ll need to allow at least 2 hours to complete this experience.

Dubai Mall

The most visited of Dubai’s landmarks, Dubai Mall really serves as the central tourist destination of the city in an area known as “Downtown”- it can be easily reached by taxi or Metro from DXB Airport making it a great stopover hub for tourists.

Whilst the Mall itself is a spectacle at over 13 million square feet of shopping and entertainment, it’s also packed full of family attractions – many of which we will talk about in more detail below. Even without spending a dirham, there’s plenty to enjoy in Dubai Mall from stunning fountains and waterfalls to the world’s largest suspended aquarium tank and countless toy stores and eating outlets.

Dubai Fountains (Temporarily Closed)

Also known as the dancing fountains, this is a spectacular free attraction in Dubai for families. There are two lunchtime shows then from 6:00 pm and throughout the evening as the sun sets there are half-hour performances. With a perfectly choreographed sound and light show, you can enjoy the fountains as part of a visit to Burj Khalifa or the Dubai Mall.

With kids, it’s imperative that you get into position early and avoid the nighttime crush that can occur around main entrances. Even better, arrange dinner at one of the restaurants with spectacular fountain views to avoid the overwhelm and see several different performances, or take an abra (small traditional boat) onto the water for a close-up view.

From Wednesday to Sunday, there’s also an accompanying light show on the Burj Khalifa 7,45 pm, 8,45pm, and 8.45 pm (subject to seasonal changes in program)

The Palm Fountain

A new inclusion since 2020 is set to level up the wow-factor. The record-breaking Palm Fountain can be seen at the leisure and entertainment venue The Pointe on Palm Jumeirah. With plenty of waterside dining and seating options, the nightly shows from 7:00 pm to midnight will certainly lighten the little one’s evening. The fountains can also be seen from the adjacent Atlantis The Palm if you are seeking a spectacular end to a day in the sun.

Dubai Frame

If the Burj Khalifa feels out of price range or you’ve already ticked this one-off, the Dubai Frame is absolutely your next best option (and with kids we’d argue even a little more fun and manageable). The Dubai Frame is literally a giant frame in Zabeel Park that captures “Old Dubai” to one side, and the modern skyscrapers of Downtown Dubai to the other.

A glass-sided lift shoots you up one side of the 48-floor high frame to enjoy spectacular views of old and new Dubai. You can choose to navigate the glass-bottomed floor – if you dare! – or stick to the sides. Enjoy a choreographed fountain show in Zabeel park and enjoy picking out your favourite landmarks from the superbly positioned Skydeck.

There are exhibits to enjoy on the ground floor too, from the past to the present Dubai in the Future Dubai Gallery.

Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood

Formerly known as Bastakiya, this area of the city can be dated back to the 1890s. Almost lost beneath the modern, city painstaking work has taken place to bring this corner of Dubai back to its former glory. There are many important landmarks you will want to capture including the Al Fahidi Fort, Dubai Museum (currectly closed for extensive renovations), and beautiful galleries and cafes.

Numerous cafes and galleries dot the side streets and beautiful not to be missed landmarks such as the Bur Dubai Grand Mosque and the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding, a brilliant location to visit if you’d like to understand more about local culture and religion (pre-booking for tours and meals required).

Waddering the streets here, and in the neighbouring Al Seef neighborhood (designed to replicate the building style) is one of the bets things to do with kids in Dubai for first-timers.

Dubai Creek & Abra Ride

Right beside the historic neighbourhood is the bloodline of the city where trade has been central to life for well over 100 years – the Dubai Creek. Dividing the old city in two, you have Bur Dubai to the west and Deira to the east.

Riding in a traditional abra across Dubai Creek is a must for all visitors, at only AED 1 per passenger, this is an absolute steal of an experience!

The Old Souks of Deira

Once you have taken an abra across Dubai Creek from Bur Dubai, you will arrive in bustling Deira and be transformed to another time. The adjacent Gold Souk and Spice Souk are the most well known, but there are also textiles and electronics markets to explore.

They are bustling and crowded places though, we recommend discretion taking young children, especially in the hotter months without air conditioning. This is an essential visit though to get a true taste of old Dubai.

Global Village

Feel like taking a trip around the world in one evening? Then welcome to the eclectic and amazing Global Village Dubai – a seasonal extravaganza held on the outskirts of Dubai showcasing food, entertainment, and traditions from over 70 countries.

Operating like a giant fairground, entry is cheap and you only pay for any additional activities once inside. From shopping to free dance performances and show-ground rides, it is truly a global taster session and one of Dubai’s buzzing evening destinations.

Ain Dubai

Opened in October 2021, this is now officially the world’s largest observation wheel. Situated on a new man-made peninsular Bluewaters Island is nestled between the Palm Jumeirah and JBR. The heart of Dubai’s tourist and beach district, the observation wheel will afford passengers incredible views over the cityscape of Dubai.

(NB after a long closure, this attraction reopened to the public in late 2024)

Don’t miss the nearby Madam Tussauds Dubai which opened alongside Ain Dubai on Bluewaters Island.

Jumeirah Mosque

We have cautiously included this one in our interesting places for kids as it may not hold the attention of your younger ones, but for your school-aged+ kids, this will be a brilliant opportunity to introduce them to the Islamic culture. Daily tours run for religious education in one of Dubai’s largest and most beautiful mosques.

Dubai Theme Parks

Dubai Parks & Resorts

Based on the outskirts of Dubai, and the main highway E11 to Abu Dhabi, this is actually several family attractions in one including:

• Legoland Dubai – a franchise of the highly popular kids theme park aimed at 2-11-year-olds
• Legoland Dubai Water Park – water park also themed around LEGO characters and concept
• Motiongate Dubai – From Columbia Pictures to Dreamworks classics and the Smurfs, this is a fabulous Hollywood-inspired park with thrilling rides for kids of all ages.
• Real Madrid World – the world’s first football-inspired theme park
• Neon Galaxy – indoor play center

Each theme park is ticketed separately, however, there are great deals to be had buying a multi-park pass. The parks include both indoor and outdoor attractions, based around a central entertainment area Riverland.

IMG World’s of Adventure

Dubai’s only entirely indoor theme park includes thrilling rides with Marvel experiences through to Powder Puff girls in the Cartoon Network zone. Enjoy the Velociraptor and Predator roller coasters in the Lost Valley. Due to height restrictions best suited to your older school-aged kids.

Dubai’s Best Beaches and Water Parks

Many families will visit Dubai specifically for the amazing water parks. Whilst many resort hotels will even include their own lazy rivers and mini water parks, here’s our pick of favourite water parks around town for extreme outdoor fun and cooling down in Dubai:

Wild Wadi Waterpark

Dubai’s first water park is filled with family-friendly attractions. With an Arabian theme, you will find Wild Wadi adjacent to Jumeirah Beach Hotel with a stunning backdrop of the Burj al Arab. The highlight ride here is the Jumeirah Sceirah, a 120m long tandem racer slide that reaches speeds up to 80km/hr! The wave pool and dedicated kids section make it a family favourite.

Guest staying at any of the Jumeirah chain hotels can get entry tickets to the waterpark.

Aquaventure

Part of the giant Atlantis the Palm complex on Palm Jumeirah, this is certainly one of the most incredible water park settings in the world – newly expanded it’s now the UAE’s biggest!

Famous rides and water slides from the Aquaconda to the terrifying Leap of Faith draw in the adrenaline junkies, but there’s plenty for families to enjoy too including the largest family tube ride in the World. The Splashers kid zone includes replica rides designed especially for those under 1.2m so there really is something for everyone here.

Just like Wild Wadi, guests staying at the adjoining Atlantis the Palm can enjoy entry to the waterpark as part of their hotel stay, so it can be well worth it.

There’s also Discovery Cove with aquatic animal experiences – we’ll leave it to your judgement on these sorts of experiences.

Legoland Water Park

As mentioned above, this park is part of the much larger Dubai Parks & Resorts complex. This is your ideal waterpark for your under 12’s crowd who need something a little more than a splash park but may not need such huge adrenaline rides. Everything is colourfully Lego-themed down to the lazy river build-a-raft, though there are only a few actual Lego-related activities.

Splash ‘n’ Party

There are three branches of Splash ‘ n’ Party in Dubai perfect for junior thrills and spills. The first is tucked away in the suburban area of Al Safa, whilst the newer and perhaps better-known branches now sit on Kite Beach & JBR – giant inflatable waterparks! Splash n Party is perfect for younger kids giving them a safe space to cool off, water fights to slides.

The Beach

Situated in JBR (Jumeirah Beach Residences) this waterfront area is one of the hottest beach spots in Dubai. Not only immaculately groomed beachfront and deck chairs but there are also dining options aplenty spotted along the waterfront, change facilities, Sea Breeze leisure attractions and water sports, and even camel rides!

A highlight for families with small kids to look out for is the Splash Pad. A perfect spot for cooling off, there are wet and dry play equipment zones within the splash park. You can pay by the hour or a 24-hour pass, ideal if you are staying in one of the nearby apartments. Learn more about the Splash pad here.

A fun new addition to The Beach has been Flying Cup, the ultimate dine-in-the-sky experience where you can enjoy a beverage or a meal perched an incredible 40m above the beach! Learn more about Flying Cup here.

The Beach is also home to Aqua Fun, a giant inflatable water park in the shape of “I love Dubai”. Containing 72 challenging obstacles, it’s superb fun for your older kids. Learn more about AquaFun here.

Sunset Beach

This is the one you may be most familiar with from photos of Dubai as it has the “7 Star” Burj Al Arab hotel along its shores – you don’t get more quintessentially Dubai than this! You may also hear these beaches referred to as “Umm Suqeim Beach” – the adjacent park and area of Dubai.

It is one of the only to really get enough swell that surfing – or at the very last bodyboarding – is possible. It is popular and can get crowded especially on beautiful mild weekends.

Kite Beach

This idyllic coastal spot is one favoured by locals as it’s not always as busy as many of the others but still has plenty of family-friendly facilities. As the name suggests, it’s a popular spot for kite flying and many water sports including kayaking, kite surfing, and jet ski hire.

Families can enjoy the deck chair services from Sole Mio and change facilities on-site, as well as extensive dining options. Aside from the Splash n Party mentioned above, there is also a ropes course for kids to try Wire World and Dom Tak trampoline arena.

Jumeirah Beach

This long stretch of beach as the name suggests is located in Jumeirah, A “Blue Flag Beach” there are lifeguard services here as well as water sports facilities, long palm tree-lined stretches of golden sand and the adjacent Jumeirah Beach Park with children’s playground, cafes and BBQ facilities.

Black Palace Beach

This one can be a bit of an unspoken hidden gem that few know about in Dubai. Nestled between the entrance to the Palm Jumeirah and the royal fortress Al Sufouh, it is not developed like the other beach fronts so don’t expect change rooms and food trucks but lifeguards are on duty. This one is all about good old fashion beach frontage and swimming.

Mamzar Beach Park

Located on the Deira side of the Creek this is a park and beach in one. As well as swimming and water sports, there is a large green park attached with everything from kids’ play equipment to picnicking spaces and jogging tracks. Lifeguards are on duty as well as change facilitates and small chalets for rent on a daily charge.

A small municipality entry fee applies of 5 AED per person for the upkeep of the grounds. This is payable on a Nol card. Note there are lady-only days on Monday & Wednesdays.

Marina Cruise

Dubai Marina offers many cruise boat options from traditional dhow cruises to luxury yachts. A favourite is taking a speedboat tour around the Palm Jumeirah (note restrictions may apply based on size/age of the child and suitable lifejackets being available), or you can try some more sedate evening cruises.

This public transport option is a really fun journey for the kids taking you past some of the city’s most spectacular highlights. You can journey from Dubai Marina to Dubai Canal. Under 5’s use public transport for free.

Best of Dubai Outdoors with Kids

In addition to this incredible list of water parks and beaches, there’s a fabulous list of outdoor adventures you can make your way through with kids in Dubai. Obviously, these are best tackled in the cooler winter months or after the sun goes down and the heat begins to subside.

Desert Safari

An absolute must on most Dubai visitor’s bucket lists is seeing the desert – and rightly so, after all, there is a lot of it! You don’t have to head far beyond the city’s outskirts to come to the rolling red dunes of Dubai. There are literally dozens of Dubai desert safaris operating in a similar area of the desert and offering a similar format of experiences.

The most common type of desert safari is dune bashing followed by a traditional Bedouin camp, including an international BBQ buffet dinner, live dancing, and entertainment, along with henna painting, shisha, camel rides, and sandboarding thrown in.

Just be mindful of age restrictions for this one. We would not recommend taking under 6’s dune bashing, nor pregnant mammas. There are, however, desert alternatives where participants can skip the dune bashing element and still enjoy the desert camp experience.

Be prepared for the heat even in the evening when visiting over summer it may not be the best family activity.

Dubai Safari Park

The newly-opened Dubai Safari Park is back after a prolonged closure to upgrade habitats and make improvements to their conservation and educational offering. Visitors to the Dubai Safari Park can expect to experience four different animal “villages” with Asian, Africa, and Arabian offerings, as well as a safari experience – Explorer Village. There’s a daily program of feeding times and live educational shows to enjoy.

The Camel Farm

This is a great one for those that don’t want to join a large organised dune bashing tour. Much more sedate is the privately run camel farm, just near to the Al Qudra area of Dubai. There are small fees for animal interactions from camel therapy (yes, that’s a thing) through to longer camel rides and feeding baby goats.

Camel Racing

Which brings us nicely to camel racing! Another wonderfully unique experience that can be enjoyed in the cooler months. The Marmoom Camel Racing Track is not far south of the city in the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve. Races start early in the day around 7:00 am and it’s all over by 9:00 am.

Watch electronic jockeys pound their charges around the sandy track (followed by a thundering parade of 4×4 with owners enthusiastically supporting their steads – almost as much of a spectacle as the actual race).

Camelicious

A long-time producer of camel milk products in the UAE, Camelicious has also started offering farm tours and an opportunity to not only meet the resident camels but see how camel-milk products are made – a fun and tasty experience! By appointment only.

Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve

This is a unique part of the city, separate from where most desert camps are set up on the outskirts of the city, The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve is a protected area of the desert so no extreme sports, it’s all about connecting with the wildlife and environment here.

Some activities are off-limits to the younger kids such as hot air ballooning at dawn, but there are still family activities on offer from star gazing experiences to dawn safaris. Only a limited number of licensed operators are permitted to run desert activities here. Our recommendation is Platinum Heritage, pricey but worth the quality for a premium desert experience and more morning wildlife drive options as supposed to dune bashing experiences.

Love Lake – Al Qudra Lakes

Made famous most recently as they have made part of the landscape into the shape of love hearts – the “Love Lakes” have become an Instagram hotspot in the city.

Aside from the Love Lakes, the actual Al Qudra Lakes area has long been a beauty spot on the outskirts of the city, known for free camping and its wildlife. Part of the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve, it is also home to one of the city’s best bike tracks (including an 85km continuous loop! plus some shorter tracks for little legs), and loved family desert resort Bab Al Shams.

There are food trucks nearby at The Last Exit Al Qudra. Entry is free and a 4×4 is recommended to get into the heart of the reserve and camping.

Ras al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary

A visit to Ras al Khor wildlife sanctuary on the outskirts of Dubai is a truly unique urban experience. Over 170 native species call this protected wetlands area home. Within the grounds are airconditioned viewing platforms and a Lagoon Hide for quiet observation of its residents.

The wetlands are free to visit during daylight hours and provide a delightful urban oasis, with the skyline of Downtown Dubai as your backdrop.

Hatta Dam & Hatta Wadi Hub

This one is a little further outside the city so you will either need to arrange a hire car or join a private tour to head deep into the Hajar Mountains and the Dubai exclave of Hatta.

This stunning nature area has been transformed in recent years to include amazing outdoor recreation facilities. It’s one of the best places to head to in winter for outdoor activities from mountain biking to horseback riding.

Visit for the day or stay overnight in one of the camping or glamping options offered.

Mushrif Park

It has hard to believe that such a large green space exists so close to the city – only the regular hum of A380’s coming in to land at Dubai International Airport reminds you just how close to town you are! Unlike many of the delicately manicured parks of the inner city, Mushrif Park is very much more a nature park, popular for weekend family gatherings and BBQ’s.

Inside you will find a huge range of facilities from bike tracks to sports fields, a model house display village, children’s games area, playgrounds, restaurants even a miniature train service. Another interesting addtion in recent years is the Dubai Crocodile Park, home to over 250 Nile crocodiles.

A 3 AED per person or 10 AED per car municipality fee is payable by Nol card for the upkeep of the park.

Aventura Parks

Situated within Mushrif Park is one of our favourite kid’s outdoor attractions. Suitable from 115cm+, this zip lining and ropes course takes you through 5 different levels of courses as you build your strength and stamina.

Al Barari Playground

So much more than your average kids playground, Al Barari is one of the best playgrounds in the city! So popular there is a small entrance fee to enter this adventure playground complete with pirate ship and water splash activities.

Hidden away in the suburbs, this is a true gem that only locals know about! The perfect place to plan into your Dubai visit with young kids through to young primary aged children.

Dubai Miracle Garden

Who could believe that the largest flower garden in the world by total number of blooms is situated just off the E311 in an area of Dubai known as Dubailand. Inside, a magical maze of pathways between floral and topiary creations, larger-than-life cartoon characters, creatures, and famous sites turned into floral arrangements.

The crowning glory to be added to the garden was a floral A380 Emirates aircraft, you guessed it, the largest floral aircraft in the world! The garden has plenty of eateries, beautiful swings, and play spaces as well as relaxing swings and utterly instagrammable.

Top tip with kids – go early. Especially on mid-winter weekends the gardens get incredibly crowded, best tackled pre-lunch for relatively crowd-free snaps and enjoyment. Open November to early May.

Dubai Butterfly Garden

Adjacent to Dubai Miracle Garden (separate entry fee), you will find the Dubai Butterfly Garden. Its temperature-controlled domes are open year-round to visitors to admire the 15,000 butterflies that live here.

Dubai Garden Glow & Dinosaur Park

Another magical seasonal spectacular, this is, in fact, several attractions all rolled into one in the city’s beautiful Zabeel Park. Open from 4:00 pm daily in the winter, enjoy the wonders of a very life-like dinosaur park, before the sunsets and the gardens light up with magnificent light sculptures.

It can get extremely busy on weekends especially so we do recommend going early at opening time, then your little ones can be home before the crowds. Advance purchasing tickets will save time. There’s also an option at the gate to add on tickets for the “Ice Park”- incredible ice sculptures in a temperature-controlled feature inside the park.

Umm Suqeim Park

This park is situated very close to Sunset Beach and is a beautifully landscaped family park. During the week it is a women’s only park, at weekends men may visit with families. A nominal entry fee is charged.

Zabeel Park

Home to both the Dubai Frame and Dubai Garden Glow & Dinosaur Park we have already mentioned, this park also has expansive walking paths and other attractions. There are plentiful additional family entertainment options including boats to hire on the ornamental lake, playgrounds, bikes to hire, and restaurants.

Quranic Park

Open in 2019, this beautiful new park is dedicated to the Holy Quran. Covering 60 acres, don’t be put off by the name, it is very much open to all faiths (but do bear in mind appropriate dress standards in this family park). The first attraction visitors come to is the Cave of Miracles, with interactive displays (in Arabic), then there is a glasshouse that displays plants mentioned in the Holy Quran.

A peaceful and beautiful landscaped garden situated in the Al Khawaneej area of the city (near to Mushrif Park) entry is free but there are small fees for the special attractions. There are play parks inside and a small food cart.

XPark Jr

An outdoor adventure park for the junior crowd, you’ll find this little gem just off Kite Beach. An outdoor learning and play experience in a beautiful setting with a cafe. This is one of the best fun things to do with kids when its starting to heat up outside but you don’t want to retreat to shopping malls just yet!

The Block

Situated in Dubai Design District, The Block is a fun new place space on the waterfront of Dubai Creek. Combining a skate park, basketball courts, volleyball courts, climbing walls, and traditional play equipment. You have a great selection of restaurants and cafes nearby in the Design Quarter, so a superb one for grabbing a cuppa and pulling up a seat while the kids play.

Dubai Creek Park

You may notice this park not long after you land at DXB, you will most likely go over the park on the freeway. It has become somewhat lost beneath the city these days but is still a great outdoor space for families to enjoy. Attractions within the park include bike hire, a Dolphanirum and Children’s City, an edutainment and learning centre including Planetarium.

In the winter, the Creek Cable Cars run daily across the park (summertime evenings only). The park has a small entrance fee, and individual attractions within the park cost more.

Dubai Marina Zipline

Great for your older kids who love a thrill but may be too young still for skydiving. Enjoy the world’s longest urban zipline through the Dubai Marina, reaching speeds up to 80km/hr (minimum weight 50kg and height 130cm) and enjoying some of Dubai’s most spectacular urban views.

With a large family community in Dubai, there’s little wonder the city is literally teeming with outdoor playgrounds. Most are free or have a minimal municipality fee 3-5 AED (payable by Nol card, the same card you need for using public transport).

The top 5 we’d recommend to visitors that we’ve not yet mentioned above if you are looking for some green space for the kids to run about:

Indoor Activities in Dubai for Kids

When it’s too hot to spend daytime outside for a good six months of the year, it should come as no surprise that many of Dubai’s most popular attractions are entirely indoors.

We believe you can still fill your days with kids on a summer stopover in Dubai (though it’s certainly not beach weather from late June to September) – just use sensible precautions to fill the day times indoors then head to the pool and outside walking in the evenings only.

Kidzania

An indoor mini-city within Dubai Mall, a similar concept to branches around the world where kids are in control of their own destiny. They can choose to earn or spend on different activities within the city, learning new skills and having lots of fun along the way.

Play DXB (formerly VR Park)

Take a virtual reality journey with interactive rides, VR Games, and arcade-style amusement. Entry is free, however, you need either a games card or purchase a “Super 7” pass for favourite rides.

Dubai Ice Rink

A full-size Olympic ice rink within a shipping mall? Why of course! Suitable for all ages groups this has always been a crowd winner in the summer heat, with all necessary equipment available to rent.

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo

You can stare in awe at the world’s largest suspended tank aquarium, basement level Dubai Mall, or journey inside the aquarium to experience the walkthrough tunnel and glass-bottom boat. This is one that can get super busy later in the day and cost much more at the door.

Emirates A380 Experience

Ever fancies yourself taking the controls of an A380 aircraft? You will find this simulator experience on Level 2 of Dubai Mall (immediately opposite the Aquarium entrance). Suitable from 9 years plus.

Sky Views Observatory and Glass Slide

This one is ideal for your teens in Dubai or any adrenaline junkies. Giving you unparralelled views of Downtown Dubai, you can literally slide through the skyscrapers on a seethrough glass slide 219 metres above the ground.

There’s also a glass-floored observatory on level 52 and a glass-bottomed bridge on level 53 of Address Sky View hotel. Under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult, recommended 12+.

The Green Planet

A wonderful biodome experience that takes you from a tropical rainforest canopy to the forest floor through a circular ramp and giant artificial tree. It is hard to believe such a place exists in the centre of the city! From adorable sloths to snakes and stunning tropical birds, this is a wonderful interactive learning opportunity for city kids and temperature-controlled it’s perfect for visiting year-round.

Ski Dubai

Not just an indoor ski slope but an entire indoor snow park and ski resort including bobsledding, snowball fight, and even a Snow Friends Penguin Encounter program. Adjoining hotel the Kempinski even has Ski Chalets on offr overlooking the slope!

The Lost Chambers

Part of the giant Atlantis the Palm complex, you can get a cheeky look at the main tank for free just from the hotel foyer, or dig deeper to enjoy the full experiences. You can get tickets with Aquaventure waterpark entry, or entry is free if you are staying at Atlantis the Palm.

Storm Coaster

Located in the brand-new Dubai Hills Mall, this unique roller coaster experience is already an urban legend! A roller coaster IN a shopping mall, cool, right? Adrenaline junkies looking for a unique new indoor activity in Dubai for kids will want to check this new opening out this summer.

An indoor, interactive children’s play museum situated in an unassuming building in Al Quoz. The “museum” has eight interactive galleries suitable from tots through to around 12 years old.

Unleash your creative side in this dedicated art studio for splat, spin, swing, or pour arts. There are (almost!) no limits but your own creativity at this funky and fun studio in Al Quoz, open afternoons and evenings for glow paint sessions. Another fabulous interactive indoor experience for kids in Dubai, the SkyTrail is part of the Magic Planet family entertainment complex, we haven’t mentioned every branch as they are available in many malls across Dubai, but the Skytrail and climbing walls make this one of the more unique family entertainment centre experiences.

Chillout Ice Lounge

For a totally unique experience, visit the Chillout Ice Lounge in Times Square, just off Sheikh Zayed Road (about halfway between the Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates). Kids will be rugged and booted up then enjoy warm beverages in amongst the ice-carved park of subzero temperatures in the middle of the desert, of course. (We have taken smaller children but the warm clothing isn’t a great fit, better for your school-age+ crowd).

Museum of Illusions

Based in the new Al Seef waterfront area of Dubai (more below), you will find this small but fun tourist stop. Full of optical illusions and magic eye tricks, it’s a great way to spend an hour away from the heat.

Yalla! Bowling

Bowling in Dubai is always a winning indoor sport for all skill levels, and this state-of-the-art venue is no exception. You will find Yalla Bowling inside the Mall of the Emirates, connected to Magic Planet indoor entertainment centre for kids (which also includes Gravity Air Park).

Bounce & X Park

A great one for kids that need to burn off some indoor energy, this is a giant indoor trampoline park and X Park adventure obstacle course with different difficulty levels. X Park height limit is 110cm, and shorter bouncers are permitted in the trampoline park over the age of 3.

Dubai’s largest trampoline park is about far more than just trampolines. There’s a double-decker kids arena & foam pits, trampoline football, basketball and volleyball, parkour, 3D wall-running, Bubble Soccer, and a crowd favourite Archery Tag.

Found on Bluewaters Island, immediately under Ain Dubai, this is a truly unique indoor venue for families in Dubai. The Hive Food Hall is truly out of thie world with a forest-like, theme and several kid-friendly activities. A new and unique way to view the city, The View At The Palm is the latest observation deck to open. Situated right in the centre of The Palm Jumeirah, you’ll find some of the most unique views of the modern side to Dubai, overlooking luxury resorts and marinas. This is a good value option relative to the Burj Khalifa, and we’s argue even more interesting views for holiday-makers.

Etihad Museum

A museum with kids, c’mon. OK, some will be bored. It’s not a purpose-built museum for kids, but there are plenty of interactive displays and special programs for kids. Taking you through the story of Dubai and the UAE from early history to the founding of the UAE with an emphasis on the period 1968 to 1974. A beautiful building and a great educational experience.

Dubai Opera

I bet you’re surprised to see us finish on this one, but trust us! There are so many shows at Dubai Opera aimed specifically at families. It’s a wonderful occasion for kids to get dressed up and enjoy a very grown-up night out in one of the world’s most beautiful modern opera houses, sitting at the foot of the Burj Khalifa.

You can enjoy a pre-show dinner and fountain show at Dubai Mall before heading onwards to the beautiful Dubai opera house sitting on Burj Lake.

Dine and Stroll – Dubai’s Best Dining & Entertainment Districts

There are so many brilliant places for this in Dubai. Some are better suited to the cooler weather, though you’ll find local families have a very “stay up late” type of culture, so these places are bustling in the evenings, even into the hotter months. We suggest visitors to Dubai try:

The Walk, JBR

Situated immediately adjacent to the beach as mentioned above, there is a plethora of activity happening in this fun and colourful part of town. Ideal if you are staying in JBR, the Marina, or around the Palm.

Bluewaters Island

One of the most up and coming entertainment areas of the city. Although the sudden opening then reclosure of star attraction, Ain Dubai, hasn’t helped visitor numbers, there’s a truly great selection of new restaurants along the waterfront, all offering superb views back to JBR and the Palm.

Dubai Marina

The bustling centre of nightlife in Dubai. Whilst Pier 7 and its incredible rooftop bars may be a little much for the kids in the evenings., there’s plenty more to enjoy around the Marina.

La Mer

This fun, funky and colourful beachfront area suddenly closed in early 2023. We await to see what is being built in replacement. The attached Laguna Water Park has also closed.

Al Seef

This is another new waterfront area, set along the Dubai Creek it’s “old meets new” as you gracefully leave the Al Faihidi Historic Neighbourhood and merge into the newer waterfront areas.

There are many restaurants here to try along the Dubai Creek, some are more upmarket or may not appeal to the junior crowd but you can try family-friendly Five Guys or Dukkan Burger. Dessert options are aplenty from Baskin Robbins to Jelly Belly Ice Cream.

Souk Madinat Jumeirah

If the idea of fighting your way through the traditional souks of Deira on a steamy evening with kids doesn’t entirely float your boat, then our favourite alternative for visitors with kids is to visit Souk Madinat Jumeirah. A much newer construction in the scheme of Dubai, you will find this mostly indoor market on the grounds of the upmarket Jumeirah hotel complex.

You need not be hotel guests to enjoy the Souk. Experience some of the most superbly beautiful views back along the canal to the Burj al Arab. It’s also a great spot for stocking up on your souvenirs.

Al Khawaneej Walk

Situated near Mushrif Park & Quranic Park, this modern new shopping and dining district combines rustic and modern design elements. The padlock bridge is a winner, along with the accompanying Last Exit food truck park. The recent addition of The Arcade by Hub Zero is bound to appeal to your older kids and teens, or Kidoos for the younger ones.

City Walk

This is a great inner urban area of the city, close to Dubai Mall but separated by the main freeway. Indoor and outdoor entertainment for all ages, you will find plenty of events on here, as well as Roxy Cinemas, Mattel Play! Town as we mentioned earlier for the little ones and Hub Zero for the older ones (we believe currently under renovations).

Dubai Festival City

Located quite close to the airport, this is a great option for evening entertainment if you have a late-night flight. Here you can catch the IMAGINE fire, water & light show nightly (a slightly smaller scale show than Dubai Mall), but nonetheless very impressive including a water projection screen & dancing fountains.

There are plentiful dining options within Dubai Festival City Mall and connected hotels, as well as kids’ entertainment centres, Bounce X-Park, and even a creche facility!

Riverland

This is the areas that connect the four theme parks at Dubai Parks & Resorts in Jebel Ali. Set to look like a quaint French Village, enjoy numerous dining options and seasonal events.

You can enter Riverland free of charge, completely separate from a theme park visit, though given its proximity to the city (i.e. it’s not particularly close and not on the Metro) you are most likely to only be visiting whilst on a theme park trip. It does provide a great post or in-between theme parks venue, though with plentiful dining choices.

Palm Jumeirah Boardwalk

Stretching the entire length of the Palm Jumeirah’s outer frond is the Palm Boardwalk. 11km of wide walkway, dotted with food vans and souvenir vendors, it runs from the Rixos Hotel in the east to the One & Only The Palm in the west. A great place for casual dining and stretching legs in the cooler winter months.

Palm West Beach

Another new kid on the block, running up the western side of the trunk of Palm Jumeirah you’ll find a great new range of restaurants offering al fresco dining in the cooler months, with ample boardwalk (dog-friendly) and spotted with some of the most up-and-coming beach clubs in Dubai.

Weekend Brunch

There’s no strolling here, but we couldn’t talk about our favourite Dubai family past times – Weekend Brunch! Not to be confused with a meal between breakfast and lunch. “Brunch” in Dubai is an all-afternoon family affair, most commonly held on a Saturday, but also increasingly popular in a more family-friendly setting on a Sunday too at Dubai’s top restaurants.

Where To Stay In Dubai With Kids

This will depend largely on what you are coming to Dubai to see and do, and of course, budget.

Whilst we have a definitive guide on where to stay in Dubai here, we know that families have special needs. We look at each of the areas that will put families in the heart of the action and a few of our favourite options that we know cater to the family crowd.

Downtown Dubai

This is a great place to locate yourself if you are only in town for a day or two and want to be close to the action of Dubai Mall, Burj Khalifa, and everything Downtown Dubai has to offer in a very central location.

There is a price tag that goes with convenience. Some of our favourites for convenience and families include Manzil Downtown and the Sofitel Dubai Downtown which has a fabulous rooftop pool.

Jumeirah Beach & Dubai Marina

Perfect for a beachy vacation in Dubai mixed with tourist attractions and theme parks. It is a bit from the airport, so it wouldn’t be our top choice on a short stopover, but ideal for say a 3 day to one-week vacation.

There are more resort-style hotels such as the Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina with superb facilities, or look for apartment-style options that are close to both The Beach and Dubai Marina such as Hilton Dubai the Walk.

The Palm Jumeirah

The Palm Jumeirah is perfect for indulgent luxury vacations in the sun. You can’t go wrong frankly with any of the resorts on the Palm. Atlantis The Palm has the obvious advantage of access to Aquaventure and the Lost Chamber attractions, but for beautiful slides and an idyllic setting, we love Anantara the Palm Dubai Resort.

There are few options on the Palm you can really describe as “cheap” but good value for families, look out for deals by Fairmont The Palm and Dukes The Palm, a Royal Hideaway Hotel with its mini lazy river and infinity pool. (You are on the trunk of the Palm here, great views back to JBR).

Deira

A great choice on a budget is to consider staying in “Old Dubai”. As long as you stay close to a Metro station, you can still have great connections to the most important attractions in town.

Some good family options include Hyatt Place Dubai Wasl District or Swissôtel Al Ghurair Dubai.

A newcomer for families to strongly consider is the Centara family resort, Deira Islands. It really has everything in one all-inclusive stay from an onsite waterpark to a family spa making it one of the top family hotels in Dubai.

Top Tips For Dubai Family Accommodation:

• Look out for the ++. Most online hotel booking tools do NOT include tourism and municipality taxes which are upward of 20% on the listed price – learn more about Dubai tourism taxes here.
• Check if the pool is temperature-controlled. If this is a big part of your trip to the sun, be conscious that pool water is NOT beautiful on its own year-round! It can be too cold without a heater from November to March and too hot without a chiller from June to September – those few months in between are OK!! Most hotels will keep their pools at an ambient 28c – but do check!!!
• Not staying at the beach? Many city hotels will offer FREE SHUTTLES to get their guests to popular beach spots so you can still have the best of both worlds.

Dress code and the weather in Dubai

As we mentioned at the outset, heat is a consideration no matter the time of year. Whilst there are some guidelines that adults and teenagers should bear in mind, children are free to dress appropriately for the heat.

Dealing With the sun & heat in Dubai

To help children deal with the heat in Dubai,we recommend:

• Drink lots of water – take your own refillable water bottle to save on plastic waste (Dubai is making encouraging steps towards going plastic free)
• Wear appropriate sun protection – we talk more about appropriate kids clothing for Dubai here
• Be aware of hot surfaces – play equipment can be hot to touch, as can the ground so consider pool shoes and always test surfaces before letting young children touch them.
• The peak of the summer may be too hot for beach swimming – it’s more like walking out of a hot sauna into a steaming spa than a refreshing dip.
• Everything inside is air-conditioned! Bring cardigans, too, for when you’re inside.

Transport in Dubai With Kids

As we mentioned, there is a reasonably good Metro system for tourists. It doesn’t cover the whole city but does cover many of the most popular family attractions so you may want to integrate using the Metro into your travel plans.

Children under 5 years old do not need the metro “Nol” card. Our biggest word of advice would be to not attempt taking the Metro with toddlers and small children during peak commuter times or large events; it can be very busy and overwhelming.  If you are taking a stroller, make sure it’s collapsible and try to use the women/family cabins on the Metro.

Car Seats and Strollers in Dubai

We would NEVER travel in Dubai without some sort of restraint for your child – traffic moves, fast, often erratic, and poor road manners can be observed.

It is the law for all children under 4 years old to use a car seat (that said, enforcement is sadly lacking and all too often this rule is flouted).

To keep your little ones safe in the car in Dubai:

• Car seats can be hired with rental cars, but if you are jumping in and out of Ubers and taxis you will want your own car seats
• If you are renting a car, you can add a car seat to your hire car order
• There are some Dubai-based equipment hire companies you can try such as Skytots or the Stroller Spa (they do rental strollers & car seats) if you only need a car seat for this leg of your trip
• Use a family-centric hire car service such as Careem Kids or Hala Junior (bookable also by the Careem app) instead of hailing a taxi off the street, this way you can order the right forward or rear-facing car seat for your child.

Dubai is largely stroller-friendly. If you are mostly planning to visit the malls and walk along the beach fronts then absolutely a stroller will come in handy. It should go without saying actually on a sandy beach or in the desert there’s no point! If you find yourself walking around some of the older areas of Dubai, footpaths are less kind to stroller users.

We prefer a stroller for tots rather than a carrier in Dubai due to the heat for much of the year, but it’s up to your personal preferences.

Emergency Information in Dubai

If the worst is to happen and your child falls ill on vacation in Dubai, there are plenty of hospitals and medical clinics you can turn to for help.

Specialty 24-hour children’s hospitals in Dubai

The following hospitals have specialist paediatric A&E facilities.

• Al Jalila Children’s Speciality Hospital
• Medcare Women & Children’s Hospital
• Zulekha Hospital (Sharjah – closer to Deira/Old Dubai)

There are plenty of hospitals and clinics open during normal business hours; if in doubt contact your hotel concierge or reception for their advice on the closest clinic. You will also find pharmacies everywhere, malls, even within some hotels so first aid supplies are easy to come by.

Best Aquariums in Dubai

With several world-class aquariums to choose from in Dubai, let’s take a closer look at exactly what you can expect to experience at each: 

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo

Located inside Dubai Mall, the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo (DUAZ) is one of the largest aquariums in the world. The mall area’s free display offers a fantastic tank view for anyone who enjoys the mall. However, it is when you venture into the aquarium through the tunnel, that the underwater world really unfolds.

There are numerous experiences, such as different animal encounters (penguins, otters, crocs, sharks), diving and snorkelling experiences, glass-bottomed boat ride and more, really allowing you to immerse yourself in this marine world.

DAUZ is known for its large collection of Sand Tiger Sharks, and the 10 million litres tank contains more than 140 different species, making this one of the top aquariums in the world.

Entrance to Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo

Entrance starts at 199 AED per adult and children over two years old. Different animal encounters are 100 AED per encounter in addition to the entry ticket.

Please note that children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult, and some animal encounters have a minimum height restriction of 140cm.

Visiting more than once? Annual Passes are 300 AED per child (2-12) and 400 AED per adult.

Lost Chambers Aquarium

Another great aquarium is the Lost Chambers Aquarium, part of the Atlantis The Palm resort. It works particularly well, if combined with a visit to Aquaventure. You will find over 65,000 marine creatures in the Ambassador Lagoon, and you can learn about aquatic life through the 21 different exhibits.

What does it cost to visit the Lost Chambers Aquarium?

Entrance is 95 AED per child (aged 2-8), and 135 AED per adult.

The different snorkelling and diving experiences are priced separately but include the general entrance fee to the aquarium. It is worth noting that you get free entry to Lost Chambers if you are staying at the Atlantis as a guest.

Atlantis Underwater Suites

Al Mahara at Burj Al Arab

If you would like to enjoy the view of the magnificent aquarium at a more leisurely pace, why not go for a special meal at L’Olivo at Al Mahara restaurant, Burj Al Arab? While watching the mesmerising aquatic life, diners can experience gourmet Mediterranean fare from Chef Andrea Migliaccio. His restaurant, L’Olivi, in Capri, currently holds two Michelin Stars.

Tables are available on Tuesday to Sunday between 7:00 pm to 10:30 pm. Reservation is essential, and children aged 8 years old and above are welcome.

Turtle Sanctuary

For a different type of experience with marine animals, head to the Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Project at Jumeirah Al Naseem Hotel.

Since 2004, the rehabilitation centre has rescued and cared for more than 1,600 turtles. While all the different species of migratory turtles can be cared for, it is particularly the Hawksbill turtle, native to the Arabian Gulf and critically endangered, that ends up at the sanctuary.

The outdoor turtle lagoon is free and open to the public all week. Every Wednesday at 11:00 AM, there is a feeding session, where you can learn lots of turtle facts – and the great part, it’s free to join. You can read more here.

The superb aquariums in the UAE don’t end in Dubai; let’s take a look around the other Emirates of the UAE for the best marine life experiences:

The National Aquarium

Currently, the largest aquarium in the Middle East, the National Aquarium opened in November 2021 in the newly developed waterfront area of Al Qana in Abu Dhabi. The aquarium is home to more than 46,000 marine animals and over 300 different species. Visitors can explore the attraction over the ten differently-themed zones.

Entrance to National Aquarium Abu Dhabi

There are three ticket options:

• General entrance is 105 AED per person (children under three are free of charge)
• Beyond the Glass is 130 AED – this includes a walk on the glass bridge; and
• Bu Tinah Dhow is 150 AED – includes a glass bottom boat tour

There are also several add-on options for animal encounters and diving experiences.

Sharjah Aquarium

Sharjah Aquarium offers a fantastic deep dive (pun intended) into aquatic creatures with a specific focus on local marine life and coastal areas.

While it doesn’t quite have the scale and impact of the larger aquariums in the UAE, it does offer a truly educational experience. Spread out over two floors the aquarium houses 21 different tanks with over 150 species of marine life.

The aquarium is located a short walk from the beach in the Al Khan area.

Entrance to Sharjah Aquarium

Entrance is 25aed for adults, 15aed for children (2-12), free for children under two, seniors and people of determination.

Entrance to the Sharjah Maritime Museum next door is included in the price. Here, you can learn about the maritime history of Sharjah, focusing on fishing methods, pearl diving and trading.

Opening hours for both museums are:

• Saturday to Thursday, 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM
• Friday 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM

SeaWorld (Opening Soon)

Set to feature the largest aquarium in the region, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi will offer much more than your traditional aquarium. It will be a fully immersive marine life theme park occupying over 180,000m² throughout five floors with purpose-built habitats, ecosystems and visitor rides.

The marine life theme park will be complimented by the dedicated marine research, rescue, rehabilitation and return centre, located next door. Under the collective heading of One Ocean, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi will anchor its narrative around the relationships between life on Earth and the one ocean that connects us all.

• SeaWorld is due to open in 2023 and will be the newest offering on Yas Island in the emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Alternatives to Visiting an Aquarium in Dubai

Diving in Dubai & the UAE

As mentioned, several of the aquariums offer great snorkelling and diving experiences. There are options for both complete novices and those with existing experience.

Dubai has a selection of indoor and outdoor places to go scuba diving or get your PADI certifications. There are several exciting locations off the coast of Dubai for the more experienced divers.

Neighbouring Emirate Fujairah also has a number of great diving spots.

Wildlife in Dubai

If the aquariums or aquatic experiences aren’t for you, perhaps you prefer to enjoy the animal kingdom on land. Luckily there are plenty of opportunities to encounter both native wildlife and more exotic species in Dubai and the UAE at large.

See camels, oryx, and falcons in the desert, observe the pink flamingos in Ras Al Khor, head to the indoor tropics of Green Planet and spot a lemur, or come face to face with big game in Dubai Safari Park. Dubai has it all.

Undoubtedly, there are many public parks in Dubai to choose from, yet how many are developed as family recreational spots offering a variety of activities for people of all ages?

Mushrif Park, a park that’s been around for many years, appears to have it all under one roof. From the adrenaline junkies to the animal lovers, there’s something for everyone.

What is Mushrif Park?

Open since 1974, Mushrif Park is one of the oldest parks in Dubai, covering an expansive area of more than 300 hectares. This desert park is enriched with more than 70,000 local Ghaf trees, home to many local birds. Apart from its untouched natural beauty, you will find here many man-made attractions present such as the International Village, an astronomy centre and barbecue facilities.

With so much available to do at the park, here’s a list of what you can expect to find at Mushrif Park.

Top 10 things to do at Mushrif Park:

1. Lay out the picnic spread

Nothing beats a picnic with your family and friends to enjoy the lovely outdoors. So, gather your picnic feast and head to Mushrif Park where you can set up your food and drinks on either the sprawling lush grass or shaded park benches. There are even dedicated barbecue pits for some live grilling.

2. Explore the International Village

Completely unique to this park, the International Village brings to you miniature replicas of traditional houses from around the globe. It’s where you get to see what a detailed German Hausbarn, a traditional floating Thai house, an English Tudor house and many other traditional dwellings look like. Spread across a section of Mushrif Park, there are 13 houses for you to freely explore.

3. Explore Aventura Parks

If you are looking for some challenge and adventure, there’s an ultimate family adventure park tucked away inside Mushrif Park. Surrounded by the natural Ghaf tree forest, Aventura is unmissable for outdoor enthusiasts. Thrill-seekers here can complete circuits that include heart-racing rope walks, and tree surfing zip lines.

4. Visit the Al Thuraya Astronomy Centre

If Astronomy interests you, or curious to learn about the celestial bodies, this UFO-like building located at Mushrif Park, is worth a visit. The Al Thuraya Astronomy Centre, includes everything related to the world of astronomy, including a Planetarium, an Astro Gallery and an exhibition of science-related games. Make the experience unforgettable by ensuring you stop by at the huge telescope, the largest of its kind in the region.

Nominal fees apply for each of the activities, must currently be pre-booked.

5. Ride at the Mushrif Equestrian Club

You can enjoy a unique horse riding experience through this desert park at the Mushrif Equestrian Club. This leisurely horseback riding will allow you to explore the natural landscape of the desert while enjoying the local wildlife. Horse enthusiasts of all skills are welcome and you can even end your session with some horse feeding and learning more about horse grooming.

6. Go for a Swim

Go for a refreshing swim at the enclosed swimming pool within Mushrif Park. There are two pools, one for the women and the other for men, open from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. To access the pool, you will have to pay a nominal charge of AED 10 for adults and AED 5 for kids, via NOL card.

7. Try Bird watching

Mushrif Park’s natural desert landscape makes an excellent habitat for indigenous wildlife, especially birds. So, come with a pair of binoculars and as you stroll around the park you will surely be able to spot at least a few of the 110 bird species present. Bird lovers can spot playful Rufous-tailed Robin, Pallid Scops Owls, Arabian Babblers and Yellow-throated Sparrows. And if you’re really lucky, you may even spot a few peacocks parading freely.

8. Get moving

You can get your team together and practice playing your favourite sport, be it football, basketball or volleyball at any of the park’s sports fields. And if the kids seem to be high on a sugar rush, send them to the kids playground complete with swings, slides and merry-go-rounds, to burn off their energy.

9. Cycle around the bicycle track

Enjoy the scenic landscape as your cycle around the park. There’s a dedicated cycle lane accessible daily from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm. Just make sure you come with your helmet and a bicycle equipped with lights.

10. Take a train ride

End the day with a quick trip on the train as it takes you through some of the best parts of Mushrif Park. Getting on board will cost you as little as AED 2 per person.

As you can see there’s plenty to fill your winter days at Mushrif Park! The park remains open throughout summer, though we do recommend visiting only early mornings and evenings in the peak heat.

Mushrif Park is equipped with clean toilets, baby changing facilities, food kiosks and prayer rooms. Not all, but many areas within the park is accessible to people with determination. Pets are not allowed at the park.

Mushrif Park is open every day for all members of the public.

• Sunday to Wednesday: from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm
• Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays: from 8:00 am to 11:00 pm

During the month of Ramadan, park timings are from 12 noon to 11:00 pm for all.

Mushrif Park Dubai Entry Fee

Entry to Mushrif Park is paid whether you are coming by car or on foot.

• A single person’s entry ticket on foot is 3 AED
• Per car is 10 AED

Children under the age of 2 and people of determination enter for free.

You will have to pay for the entrance fees using an RTA issued NOL card, so it’s a good idea to have your card topped up with sufficient credit.

How to get to Mushrif Park

Located in Deira’s Uptown Mirdif Area, Mushrif Park is on the Airport Road, 15 kilometres away from Downtown Dubai and about 13 kilometres from Dubai International Airport.

Directions to the park are clearly signposted if you are planning to come by car. Simply take the E311 towards Sharjah, and keep driving on the E311 only to take the right turn after you cross the exit for Mirdif City Centre. After that, you will see signboards to Mushrif Park to keep following until you reach the park.

If travelling by bus, take the Bus 11A.

If coming by Dubai Metro, you can either choose to step off at Rashidiya Metro Station on the Red Line or Etisalat Metro Station on the Green Line. These are the nearest Metro stations to the park, and from here you will have to take a 10-minute taxi ride to reach Mushrif Park.

It can be really variable depending on the length of your tour, the number of heads in your party and how many activities are included. Generally speaking, morning desert safari’s in Dubai start from about $45USD a head for a very basic package, up to VIP experiences over $350USD per person.

Overnight desert safari in Dubai

Another opportunity to enjoy the desert at dawn is to camp overnight in the Dubai Desert. This is a fun local hobby with expats & residents but a little harder to do if you’re a visitor don’t have the right gear with you. There are an increasing number of camps offering to now extend their evening camps into overnight services – though be warned it can be rustic!

What to bring on a morning desert safari in Dubai

Regardless of what time of year you are visiting Dubai, you will want to be appropriately equipped with the right attire to get the most out of your Dubai Desert Safari.

• Pack warm layers for the early start, but be prepared how quickly things can heat up
• Pack sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen for when the sun comes up
• A headscarf or hair tie is always recommended for ladies with long hair
• We recommend closed shoes with socks over sandals or flip flops – sand will still get everywhere but years of experience has taught us its more comfortable to shake out your trainers!
• Drink plenty of water

Are there any disadvantages to a morning safari?

It really depends on what you’ve come looking for. Adverse weather can affect a morning desert safari in Dubai as there can be low-lying fog, particularly as the seasons change but more so in the mid-winter. On some of the worst days, this can reduce your visibility to a point where trips may need to be cancelled. This fog normally burns off by mid-morning.

Do be cautious of the time the tour actually sets out. Whilst it may be cool in the morning, by lunchtime it can be roasting. Late mornings are only really appropriate to be in the desert during winter (around November to March).

And, of course, a morning tour means you miss the sunset – but conversely, pick a dawn tour and you should be able to experience the magic of sunrise in the desert.

What to expect at The Green Planet

The Green Planet Dubai is an indoor oasis; home to 3000 exotic species of flora and fauna set over four different levels of a tropical rainforest. A giant artificial tree dominates the enclosed ecosystem, while a circular ramp then gently descends around the tree for you to explore the Canopy, the Mid Story, the Forest Floor and the Flooded Rainforest.

There are plenty of exhibits and educational signboards to stop at along the way; enjoy snakes and sloths to creepy reptiles and waterfalls whilst birds and butterflies flutter past. A full sensory experience from the sounds, the sights and the smells, you will come away with a much greater understanding of the important role tropical forests play in the future of our planet.

A general admission ticket will guide you through the rainforest and a special Australian Walkabout exhibit in the basement, whilst there are several add on experiences to enjoy for the animal enthusiast.

Ever popular is the picnic with the sloths experience and a special new and unique experience has been added to camp in the biodome with tents and hammocks, under the careful eye of their trained staff, of course.

The Green Planet is an ideal stopping point for those extra hot or rainy days in Dubai as you are entirely inside, this is a great educational experience that will take you approximately 1 hour to enjoy at a leisurely pace.

Tickets can be purchased at the door, however, it is much cheaper to buy online in advance.

• Under 3-years old & people of determination FREE

You can get a discount booking with Green Planet direct online., though they are cheaper again to buy using KLOOK ticketing services, this drops the price to 70AED adults and 66AED kids.

There are plenty of add-on experiences to enhance your visit, including snorkelling with the piranas (330AED) and a popular zookeeper for a day program (390 AED). The overnight Camping in the Rainforest starts from 700 AED per person –find the current camping program for 2025 here

Opening times for Green Planet

• Green Planet Dubai is open daily 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM

NB if you want to catch Thunderstorm at Green Planet, make sure you’re visiting for the daily downpours at 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM (with sound effects and all so careful if the kids scare easily you may actually want to avoid these times!)

• A special program runs on a Wednesday 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM “The Green Planet After Dark” (from 89 AED)
• Picnic Brunch with Sloth & Friends happens daily at 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM in The Green Planet Cafe (extra charge)
• Snorkelling with the Piranas happens daily at 4:00 PM (limited numbers, extra charge)
• Camping in the Rainforest must be pre-booked as spaces are limited, this only happens on Thursday & Friday nights (extra charge).

The Green Planet Dubai is situated at the junction of Al Wasl Road and Safa Road, Dubai – immediately adjacent to the City Walk leisure precinct.
