One of the significant areas of concern for non-Muslims visiting Dubai during Ramadan is how to behave during the Holy Month.

Whilst the basic cultural behaviours for entering a Muslim country can be easy to grasp, there are a few extra steps that visitors need to take during Ramadan to ensure they are being respectful.

When is Ramadan in Dubai?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the lunar calendar. Following the Hijri calendar, the start date of Ramadan is approximately 10 days earlier each year on the Gregorian calendar. In 2026, Ramadan 1447 will fall over February-March; the moon sighting committee confirms the exact date.  

It is expected the 2026 dates to be 18 February 2026 to 19 March 2026

What do non-Muslim tourists & residents need to observe during Ramadan in Dubai?

Non-Muslim expat residents and visitors are responsible for making sure there is a suitable environment for Muslims to observe Ramadan.  Although you are not expected to join in with the fasting, you must show respect to those who are through your conduct.

Eating, drinking and smoking in public by adults during Ramadan is prohibited. 

HOWEVER, contrary to laws that carry fines of up to 2000 AED for eating in public during Ramadan, general practice in Dubai has significantly changed over the last four years. Eating establishments previously needed special licenses to operate during daylight hours of Ramadan and blacked-out windows.

Dubai Department of Economic Development (Dubai Economy) issued a circular on 11 April 2021 stating that restaurants in the emirate will not have to screen visible dining areas during fasting hours in the Holy Month of Ramadan 1442. This has been the case again in the past four years, so the rule changes look permanent, and eating in public spaces is no longer prohibited.

You can still obtain food and drink in hotels and shopping centres in Dubai during Ramadan. Walking around eating and drinking in public is socially unacceptable, even if it is no longer illegal. If you are consuming food and drink, stay within designated dining areas.

You can do as you please during Ramadan in the privacy of your own home or hotel rooms as long as it doesn’t disturb others (i.e., no loud music and blatant partying).

What About Children During Ramadan in Dubai?

Younger children, especially those under six years old, are not expected to participate in fasting, whether Muslim or non-Muslim.  Pre-pubescent children between 7 and 12 years old may start observing fasting for short periods. On reaching puberty, participation by all Muslims (some exceptions mentioned below) is required.

Schools in Dubai will start later and finish earlier during Ramadan. Individual schools will advise opening hours, but they are normally restricted to a maximum of 5-6 hours a day, and extracurricular activities are often cancelled.

You should see no change for younger children who attend nursery or playgroups, though hours may be reduced. You should freely feed toddlers or young children when they are hungry and dress them appropriately for the weather.

Exceptions to Fasting

There are many circumstances under which a Muslim can be exempted from fasting, including if you are a pregnant woman, diabetic, breastfeeding, menstruating, sick, or of old age. The basic premise is that you should not participate if it harms your health.

For a non-Muslim who is pregnant or breastfeeding, you should still avoid openly eating or drinking in public, likewise for children between six and 12 years. It may be allowed, but even Muslims will do this discreetly and privately – that said, in the past few years, a blind eye seems to have been turned to public eating in Dubai during Ramadan.

If you are travelling through one of the country’s major international airports, you will see full food services operating as travellers are exempt from fasting (Muslims will make up a fasting day while travelling later in the year).

Breaking of the Fast – Iftar in Dubai

The fast is broken at maghrib (the sunset prayer time) by the firing of a cannon. This is followed by the sound of the Azan echoing from a mosque’s loudspeaker.

This has been a Ramadan tradition in Dubai since the 1960s. In Dubai, seven cannons are fired at various locations stationary locations, and this year, they’ve introduced a travelling cannon. Run by Dubai Police, including Burj Park, Eid prayer grounds in Al Mankhool, Al Baraha at Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai City Walk, and Expo City Dubai will also be launching the iconic Iftar Cannon with Dubai Police, taking place nightly.

Iftar is literally the breaking of the fast, the meal taken immediately after sunset. This is a time for families to come together and eat a meal. Usually, a quick snack of water and organic and gourmet dates is taken before prayers, followed by a large meal with traditional delicacies such as harees, lamb ouzi, and mixed grill.  

Many hotels in Dubai will host huge Iftar buffet extravaganzas and traditional tents for Ramadan. It is an incredibly unique experience to join in with Iftar celebrations.

A unique experience for tourists to join is the Ramadan Iftar Program, run by the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding, in the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Join your local hosts for Arabic Coffee and dates, enjoy Iftar, and then visit the Diwan Mosque.

When is Iftar in Dubai?

Iftar timing varies by city as it occurs at sunset for that exact location. While the cannon is considered the official time, you can estimate the likely time based on when Maghrib is. (NB Dubai is always 4 minutes earlier than Abu Dhabi as it is further to the east).

Suhoor in Dubai

As the fast begins again at sunrise, Suhoor is the pre-dawn meal taken immediately before sunrise. Again, many hotels will provide suhoor on a grand scale, some starting suhoor offering as soon as iftar is cleared and lasting throughout the night.

Laylatul Qadr

(Also known as Lailat al Qadr) is the Night of Power, when Allah first revealed the Quran to the Prophet Muhammed.

The exact date is debated, but it is believed to be an odd date in the last 10 days of Ramadan. For many, prayers intensify in the final 10 days. 27 Ramadan is generally agreed as the night of observation; in 2026, this will likely be 15 March. It is not a public holiday in the United Arab Emirates, but something for tourists to be mindful of as it’s considered the Holiest of nights during what is already a special month.

Other Things to Be Mindful of during Ramadan in Dubai

Ramadan is not only about the act of fasting; for Muslims, it is also about abstention – including tobacco, sex, music – and tolerance.

• Appropriate dress standards must be observed in public areas (more stringently enforced than usual).  All grown-ups (including teens) should be dressed conservatively and look to have arms and legs covered in public – and certainly avoid cleavage and tight clothing. This said, just as dining rules have relaxed in recent years, it seems so have clothing rules – don’t be THAT tourist!

• Hold fire on any public displays of affection, avoid kissing, and even hand-holding between grown-ups (with your child is fine).

• In that hour or so before sunset and Iftar, the patience of many is strongly tested, and you may experience some erratic driving. Best to steer clear of the roads, and if going for your evening meal, be mindful of letting others who might need it more go before you.

• It is a time for peace and giving, so try to avoid shouting and anger, and especially no rude words or gestures.

• Most workplaces will modify working hours throughout the Holy Month to accommodate the needs of those fasting (UAE Government workers may work from home on Fridays only in 2025 – this could impact some services).

• You may also find shops have very different opening times, with many closed all day and open through most of the night.  Major supermarkets and Malls can even be open 24 hours a day!  You should have no problem finding an open supermarket throughout the day for groceries; you obviously shouldn’t consume anything until you get home.

• Mosques that are open throughout most of the year for guided tours to non-Muslims may adjust or pause their programs during the Holy Month.

• Many tourist attractions will adjust their hours, too; always check on websites/Facebook pages for changes to business opening hours at this time of year.

• Attractions such as evening desert safaris will continue to operate, but the entertainment element of their program may be paused or altered over Ramadan.

• Special events such as Ramadan Night markets and other pop-ups after dark occur during Ramadan, adding to the uniqueness of visiting Dubai at this time of year.

Ramadan Timings in Dubai

Sometimes, key attractions change their opening hours during the Holy Month, though as Ramadan has crept earlier into Spring, we have found fewer attractions are now adjusting their opening hours for Ramadan. We are presently aware of these Ramadan hours in 2026.

Transport During Ramadan in Dubai (confirmed 2026)

• The Dubai Metro will run Monday to Thursday & Saturday from 5:00 AM to midnight, Fridays from 5:00 AM to 1:00 AM, Saturdays from 5.00am to midnight and Sundays from 8:00 AM to midnight.
• Dubai Tram will run Monday to Saturday from 6:00 AM to 1:00 AM and Sundays from 9:00 AM to 1:00 AM.

Attraction Timings during Ramadan in Dubai (TBC 2026)

• Dubai Mall Shops are open Monday to Thursday, 10:00 AM to Midnight; Friday to Sunday, 10:00 AM to 1:00 AM – food establishments will stay open until 2:00 AM
• Global Village presently advertising normal hours; 4:00 PM to midnight Sunday to Wednesday and 1:00 AM Thu to Sun -TBC if they’ll extend to 2:00 AM
• Dubai Frame 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM
• Museum of the Future 10:00 AM to 7:30 PM
• Quranic Park 12:00 PM to 11:00 PM (Cave of Miracles and Glass House close 7:00 PM)
• Ain Dubai 10.00 AM – 9.00 PM
• Aquaventure 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM
• Dubai Parks & Resorts Varies by the park – Legoland opens at 10:00 AM and closes 6:00 PM, Motiongate opens at 11:00 AM closes 8:00 PM/9:00 PM, and Bollywood from 1:00 PM to 10:00 PM/11:00 PM weekends
• Dubai Safari Park Day session 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM (it doesn’t look like they’re doing the late-night sessions in 2023)

NB – if you’ve not visited Dubai for a few years, take note that the weekend has changed; Dubai now operates a 4.5-day week from Friday afternoon to Sunday.

Visiting the Grand Mosque during Ramadan

If you were planning a visit to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi as a day trip from Dubai, the good news is that the Grand Mosque will remain open daily throughout Ramadan for non-Muslim visitors. There will be a 3.5-hour window in the evening when it is closed while Iftar is observed.

Eid in Dubai Explained

To prevent any confusion, there are two Eid celebrations, which you will find marked by Muslim countries worldwide.

Eid al-Fitr in Dubai

Eid al fitr is the festival of the breaking of the fast, occurring immediately after Ramadan.

It is a time of festivities and daytime feasts for Muslim families, also when people will dress in their new Eid clothes, ladies will have their hair and henna done and gift-giving occurs among other celebrations.

It is a very busy time in Dubai and also a national holiday – usually lasting three to four days, but for Government agencies and schools, this may be extended to a week.

Eid al-Fitr in 2026 will be announced towards the end of Ramadan, you should expect the holiday dates to fall around 19 to 22 March 2026.

These are usually declared after the official start of Ramadan, although Eid itself is still subject to moon sighting. The first sighting of the crescent moon marks 1 Shawwal.

Charity or Zakat – another of the Five Pillars of Islam – is considered very important during Eid celebrations, giving and thoughtfulness to those less fortunate.  You may see a number of white tents popping up all over town even before Ramadan starts. These are for donating to the needy – it can be an excellent way to get your children involved in Ramadan and understand the importance of giving.

Eid al-Adha in Dubai

“The festival of the sacrifice” occurs approximately 70 days after the end of Ramadan. Arafat Day falls first, on the second day of Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca –  the 9th Day of Dhu Al Hijja on the Hijri calendar.

Eid al-Adha immediately follows this. Animals such as sheep or goats are sacrificed, and tradition dictates a third is eaten by the family, a third is given to relatives and friends, and a third is given to the needy.

This is another three to four-day public holiday though can be extended to a week also for Government departments and schools (always announced very last minute)

Arafat day in Dubai is due to occur on 25 May 2025 and Eid al-Adha 26 to 29 May 2026, subject to moonsighting

Remember to park any opinions you may have about whether it is “right” or “healthy” or any other beliefs contrary to the Pillars of Islam; whether you are a visitor or an expatriate resident, you are a guest in the country, and these are the rules and local customs that must be observed.

Weather in Dubai at Christmas

In late December, you should expect wonderful mild weather – average daytime highs of 26°C/78.8°F and seawater temperature of 25.6°C/78°F.

Rain is not unheard of in December, but certainly don’t expect a long string of dreary grey days. Fog can be an issue in December, particularly in the early mornings.

The wonderful weather in December, combined with the fact it is also school holiday time in Dubai (along with most of the world), means that the week from Christmas to New Year in Dubai is one of the busiest of the year.

You can expect hotel and AirBnB prices to skyrocket, and in some cases, your first choice of accommodation may not be available – so book early if you have December in Dubai on your agenda.

Celebrating Christmas in Dubai 2025

Christmas festivities in Dubai, generally speaking, start as soon as National Day (Eid Al Etihad) events have concluded (the weekend around 2-3 December and run throughout the month of December).

From your classic shopping mall Santas to Christmas tree lightings at most of the city’s top hotels, you will not escape the jubilant atmosphere of Christmas celebrations in Dubai.

Please note that this guide still needs several updates for 2025, information tends to be released quite late into the season, so please use the 2024 information here as a guide only to the events that will be on this Christmas

The Grotto at Dubai Mall

A new edition within the region’s largest Mall, a paid visit to Santa can be booked at The Grotto, Dubai Ice Rink, Dubai Mall. You can book family sessions here and special Whispering Winter sessions for children with special needs.

So far, they’ve only opened for early registration in 2025, we don’t know booking times/slots yet of final cost for 2025, though it was one of the more comprehensive but expensive options in 2025 with a group limit of 5.

Winter Nights – TBC 2025

Festive celebrations at popular beachfront venue The Beach in JBR have been rolled into a wider Winter Nights festival that runs from mid-October (when the daily highs start to dip below 40C!) through December.

This includes free movies every Friday and Saturday night, 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm, these all have a festive theme throughout December.

Other festive events within the Winter Night’s Schedule 2024 include Holiday Melody Marchers (6:00 PM, 7:00 PM, 8:00 PM on 7 and 28 December), and Holiday Cheers with Santa and Elves (14-15 & 21-22 December at 6:00 PM, 7:00 PM, 8:00 PM)

Guests over winter can also enjoy the nightly DSF drone show, which will take place at 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM from 5 December through to 11 January 2026.

Festive Garden at Madinat Jumeirah

Madinat Jumeirah’s Festive Market returns from 13 December 2024 to 5 January 2025. With festive food and drinks, fun activities for the kids, and seasonal live music, this is always one of the best places to enjoy the holiday season in Dubai, at one of the city’s most iconic locations.

Held at Madinat Jumeirah Fort Island, the event highlights include a 36-foot-tall Christmas tree, a live band playing festive music and Christmas carols, a North Pole train ride, and a classic Venetian Carousel among the German-style Christmas market huts.

Don’t miss gingerbread house making, live entertainment and decorated abra rides. It’s the perfect place to pick up a special gift with a local touch and seasonal treats you might be craving from home!

This long-running Dubai Christmas event takes place on the Al Habtoor City rooftop. The venue is transformed for the winter season into an enchanting winter garden. Expect dazzling decorations, carols, street artists, acrobats, mulled wine, gingerbread, and even Santa Claus will make an appearance.

Festive Circus at Wafi City (TBC 2025)

Home to one of the city’s best Santa Grottos, this Deira mall offers a lot to enjoy in December. In addition to Santa, guests can hunt for treasure in Khan Murjan Souk, discover treats in their outdoor market, and participate in festive crafts and entertainment.

• Events will take place from 6 to 24 December 2024.
• Timings for Santa are 2:00 PM to 9:30 PM on opening night, then daily 8:30 AM to 9:30 PM (Breaks from 1:00 to 1:30 PM and 7:00 to 7:30 PM)
• The outdoor winter market run daily from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM

Global Village – all winter

Festivities will commence this year on 13 December and run through until 5 January. They will be celebrating with a multi-cultural snowy theme, with Santa and his elves spreading cheer across the park. Head to the Restaurant Plaza for snow activities and enjoy the spectacular 21-metre-high Christmas Tee at Celebration Walk.

Global Village is a spectacular place to visit over the cooler winter break (though do be warned, it can be extremely busy at weekends). There are ample shopping opportunities, as well as the chance to enjoy seasonal flavors and treats with a truly international twist.

Dubai Santa Run (TBC 2025)

One of the best Christmas events in Dubai to get you in the spirit, this family-friendly event will return on Saturday, 7 December 2024, to West Beach, Palm Jumeirah.

All participants must register in advance, with kids registered for AED 49 (or free with an adult). Adults are AED 125 to participate, or book the whole family and get free hotel parking at the Hilton.

There are 1km, 2.5km, and 5km events, the chance to meet Santa himself, and prizes for best dressed.

Santa Cycle (TBC 2025)

This family cycling event, new in 2024 and also brought to you by Race.ME, will take place on Sunday, 22 December 2024.

What is the Quranic Park?

Spanning over 60 hectares, the different sections at the Quranic Park are inspired by the plants and miracles mentioned in the Holy Quran.

The two main attractions at this park are, ‘Glass House’, a temperature-controlled greenhouse for plants and ‘Cave of Miracles’, a man-made cave illustrating some important stories from the Quran.

You will also find here 12 orchids displaying the different plant species mentioned in the Quran, such as figs and black seed.

Glass House

This large greenhouse made of glass panels replicates a cool-dry Mediterranean climate to be able to grow the 29 different plants and trees that are mentioned in the Quran and the ‘Sunnah’ (the way of the Prophet).

Once inside, you will find yourself surrounded by plants that are not usually found growing here, such as corn, olive trees, basil, barley, pomegranates, banana, wheat, and much more. You don’t need to be an eager botanist to find yourself marveling at the beauty of these plants.

With clear signboards for each species of plant and tree, you can learn more about the health benefits they provide and where they have been mentioned in the Quran. It is difficult not to feel a sense of calmness and wonderment when strolling through this temperature-controlled greenhouse. Many plants that would otherwise not grow outside their natural habitat can now be seen blooming almost all year round in this desert city.

You must not give up on the opportunity to stroll up towards the observation deck. The place gives excellent views of the Glass House and is the perfect spot to capture some memorable photographs.

Last Exit – The Yard by Meeras

A farm-inspired suburban food truck and recreational destination for the whole family. The two things you simply must not forget to bring with you here are your camera and taste buds.

The playful murals, farm-inspired installations and eccentric themes provide the perfect shots for Instagram. One of the iconic features you will find here are the two pedestrian bridges across the man-made lakes filled with engraved padlocks that visitors leave behind, symbolising their everlasting love.

The Last Exit food trucks and the indoor restaurants serve a variety of cuisines, ranging from Local Emirati cuisine to sushi and mini donuts.

As if that’s not enough, Al Khawaneej Walk is an indoor mall, designed to look like a greenhouse. You will find here a supermarket, a cinema and lots of shopping options.

AKS Color Carnival 2024

When: Saturday, 2 March 2024, 11:00 am to 8:00 pm

Get set for Dubai’s biggest Holi celebration with entertainment from DJs Ace, Buddha, KV5, Yogmusic, Purab and Zubair. There will also be dhol players and carnival acts, along with food trucks, a Kid’s play area and a shisha area.

Holi Masti 2024

When: Sunday 3 March 2024, 10:00 AM

Taking place at Al Sahara Desert Resort, this colourful event will take place in a new location this year in early March, with performances by singers Manj Muzik, Nindy Kaur, Kanika Kapoor, Sukriti Kakkar and Prakriti Kakkar.

It also features Threoory the Band (famous for Ranbir Kapoor’s entry medley in the film Animal) and many DJs to keep you dancing. You can also expect to find a VIP Arena, kids arena, live music, live DJs, licensed beverages, food stalls, and organic colors will be used.

Tickets start from singles at AED 80, groups of 4, AED 280, or groups of ten can be purchased for AED 500. At the door, you’ll pay AED 100 per person.

Atrangi Holi Fest 2024

When: Sunday, 3 March 2024, 12 noon to 10:00 PM

Taking place at The Square (Rugby Park), Their claim is not the biggest but the most gigantic colourful celebration! Expect 10 hours of music, food and entertainment with water wars and dedicated kids play area.

Holi Music Mantra 2024

When: Thursday 11 April 2024, 10:00 am to 7:00 pm

A post-Ramadan event to look forward to, this event will take place in the Zabeel Park Amphitheatre.

There will be live DJ’s alongside live performances by three sensational Indian Idol faces, accompanied by organic color blasts, live dhol and plenty of Bollywood beats.

There will be plenty of Desi food stalls, as well as color and culture, for a complete family day out. Enjoy this late celebration of Holi in Dubai if you missed the early March events.

The Grand Mosque has re-opened post-COVID, and border crossing restrictions between the Emirates have been abolished. As of 7 November 2022, you no longer require any sort of PCR testing, nor evidence of vaccination against COVID-19 in order to enter public spaces in Abu Dhabi emirate.

Things To Know About The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Before diving into the details of how to get there, let’s look at just a few fabulous facts about the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (and why it is absolutely worth the day trip from Dubai!)

• The Grand Mosque is named after the country’s founding father, the Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan “May Allah rest his soul in peace”.
• The Mosque is an active house of worship, capable of housing 41,000 worshippers at capacity – 10,000 inside and 31,000 in the external courtyards.
• The building of the Mosque was completed in 2007 with the craftsmanship of 38 contractors and thousands of workers from around the world.
• It holds several “largest in the world” claims to fame – including the largest hand-woven carpet at 5,627 sqm and the largest marble mosaic floor in its 17,000 sqm courtyard.
• HH Sheikh Zayed is laid to rest in a mausoleum on the Mosque grounds. Two Imans read the Quran here 24 hours a day.

How To Get To The Grand Mosque From Dubai

There are limited public transport options between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, as we discuss here, so our best-recommended method of getting from Dubai to Abu Dhabi to see the Grand Mosque are:

1. Take A Taxi – approximately 1.5 hours, depending on where you set out from; expect to pay around AED 300-350 one-way for a metered taxi.
2. Join A Tour Group – 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the departure point and how many pickups they make. A tour guide, meals, and multiple tourist stops are likely to be thrown in, so the price is very variable per person – more below!
3. Hire a Private Driver – taking approximately 1.5 hours; this is the best choice if you prefer door-to-door service and like the personal touch – ideal if you are a family or small group looking to split the cost. You can try a service such as GetTransfer to have private drivers bid on your journey and get a competitive price.
4. Self Drive – 1 to 1.5 hours – If you are a confident driver, pick up a hire car in Dubai and take the E11 all the way to Abu Dhabi.
5. Take a public bus – 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on your starting point; more below!

Public Transport Dubai to Abu Dhabi to see the Grand Mosque

There are two different Intercity bus routes that you can take from Dubai to central Abu Dhabi, each costing AED 25 one way.

• The first bus leaves from Al Ghubaiba Bus Station (Route 100) approx every 20-35 minutes and terminates at Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station (Al Wadha Mall)
• The second leaves from Ibn Battuta Mall (Route 101) approx every 20-35 minutes and also terminates at Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station.

From Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station, you then need to catch a local Abu Dhabi bus service 94 to the Grand Mosque.

Note you can use your Nol card to get to Abu Dhabi on the InterCity bus, but from the Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station to the Grand Mosque, you need a Hafilat card to use local public transport in the capital.

• Once you’re in Abu Dhabi, tourists can also avail the FREE Visit Abu Dhabi shuttle buses. They are not super frequent, but if you’re travelling on a budget, these can be a great way to get about in Abu Dhabi. Look for Route B2 (stops near Al Wadha Mall) to take you to the Grand Mosque.

Organised Tours From Dubai to Abu Dhabi

You can join a larger tour group and simply use this as a form of transportation or hire a personal guide and driver.

This can certainly take the stress out of self-driving, but do note a lot of the tour buses from Dubai arrive “en masse”. If you want crowd-free photos, self-driving, taxi or private Abu Dhabi tours are the better way to go.

Do I need to be Muslim to visit?

Not at all. The Grand Mosque is open to everyone as long as they treat it in a respectful way (including conservative dress).

There are certain areas of active worship and Friday mornings when visits are limited to worshippers only.

Otherwise, you can attend the Grand Mosque any time during opening hours.

What should I wear to the Grand Mosque?

It is always advisable as a tourist in Abu Dhabi to dress conservatively. The Abu Dhabi Grand Mosque – and in fact, any religious or Government building in the UAE – has a much higher dress standard than, say, a Mall or public promenades.

For women, you must have arms and legs completely covered and your head. The only skin that can show is your hands, feet, and face.  If you are not adequately dressed (don’t worry, this applies to most tourists), you will be sent to purchase an abaya or Shayla in the adjoining boutiques as you enter the mosque. These are around AED 40 – 80 for something cheap.

This is all part of the experience, so embrace it! But please don’t think this means you should wear the skimpiest outfit underneath!

For men, they should be in long trousers and sleeves. If they have shorts on, they will also be asked to purchase something more suitable before entering.

Please note! since COVID the ability to hire appropriate clothing for free to enter the Grand Mosque has been suspended and doesn’t look like it will return. If you turn up with in appropriate clothing, you will be redirected by security staff to a small strip of shopping boutiques to buy the right attire. They are relatively inexpensive, but you may want to BYO from Dubai if you’re hitting the souks, consider it a souvenir of your time in the UAE!

Note, part of the tour involves you taking off your shoes to walk through the Mosque itself; consider nice socks too, or having your toenails painted for this!! And remember where you left your shoes!!!

Do I need to pay to go into the Grand Mosque?

It’s absolutely free.  The Mosque is for the people; as such, no charge is levied on worshippers or visitors. Even cultural tours are provided for free.

However, they will issue you an entry ticket where you need to give some personal details. This can be done online in advance here to save time.

Do I need to book a tour of the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi?

If you come with a tour guide, they may include a personal tour guide within the price you paid.

Otherwise, the best alternative option to make sure you get the best out of your Grand Mosque visit is to get involved with one of the FREE mosque cultural tours.

These are held throughout the day with no need to pre-book.

Opening times for the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

• Saturday through Thursday, 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM
• Friday 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM & 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM

Tours are conducted in English and Arabic and last around 45 minutes, with an opportunity to ask further questions at the end. It is not customary to tip for this tour.

For a long time, the Grand Mosque was probably Abu Dhabi’s most prominent and the only drawcard getting tourists to trek the 160km journey from Dubai.

However, many more tourist highlights now warrant at least a full-day trip to Abu Dhabi, if not longer.

The United Arab Emirates is a Muslim country but not as conservative as other parts of the Middle East and Central Asia when it comes to dress code expected of tourists.

That said, there are still minimum standards expected of tourists, and the dress code can vary depending on the situation. Public places such as shopping malls, souks, government buildings, or museums are treated quite differently from a resort or water park.

Whilst it’s essential to dress for the warm desert climate, always consider your surroundings and what is culturally respectful.

Dubai Dress Code: Dressing for Religion and the Heat in Dubai

Although daytime temperatures throughout the year range from warm to very hot to scorching, you must remember at all times that you are in a Muslim country. It is possible to dress conservatively while still adapting to the weather, while also respecting local culture.

There are a few basic rules tourists should observe:

• Aim to cover shoulders and knees
• Avoid showing midriffs and cleavage
• Avoid anything transparent or overly clingy
• If someone does ask you to cover up, do so without protest

Yes, you will also hear conflicting advice in travel forums telling you to wear whatever you want, Dubai is so liberal, etc, etc. Please don’t be THAT tourist!

Things such as the acceptance of Western clothing have evolved significantly over the last 20 years, as the city has become increasingly open to tourism. However, Islamic cultural roots in the city remain deeply ingrained.

Just because you see someone else wearing something skimpier and more revealing than you doesn’t make it OK! Show some respect to your hosts.

Understanding Local Dress in Dubai

You will see that most local Emiratis and a large proportion of expats in Dubai, hailing from other GCC countries, dress in traditional regional outfits.

For men in Dubai, this is:

• A long white kandora or dishdasha (you can see all the regional variations explained here!)
• Ghutrah (headpiece) secured by a black igal (agal/egal as you please!)

For women in Dubai, this is:

• A long black abaya
• Black Shayla (head covering)
• Very occasionally, you will still see some women with a metal burqa, but this is uncommon. Full niqabs or burkhas are extremely uncommon
• Other colours are, of course, permitted, but local women will almost always be seen in public only in black

Dubai Dress Code For Women: What to Wear in Dubai as a Woman

Non-Muslim female visitors are by no means expected to dress in the same manner as local women, nor have their heads covered at all, with some limited exceptions:

• For women, carrying a shawl or pashmina with you is always a good idea to cover up if you feel awkward, and for a bit of sun and dust protection!

• If you are entering the Grand Mosque or any religious or government building, you will need to buy or hire a full-length abaya and cover your head.

• Linen trousers, long shorts, or cargo pants, and clothing made from natural fibers will be your best choices in the high temperatures of Dubai.

• Women can wear leggings under a dress as a great solution if their dress is a little short. However, it’s best to avoid tight, revealing bottoms that show too much cleavage.

• Cut-off shorts, midriff tops, and spaghetti straps or strappy tops should be avoided in Dubai.

• Maxi dresses or a maxi skirt are a great choice for ladies – day and night – (but we’d warn ladies to be aware of sweating and chaffing if wearing skirts/dresses! Try some anti-chaffing biker shorts underneath).

• Sleeveless tops are acceptable in most situations where only your arms are shown.

• Shorts that completely cover the bottom are acceptable now in most situations.

Dubai Dress Code for Men: What Should Men Wear When Visiting Dubai?

• For men, you will find that despite the heat, nearly all gents in Dubai wear full-length trousers.

• Bringing some light chinos is a good idea for public places. Alternatively, if wearing shorts, try to make them knee-length.

• Avoid wearing tank tops (except at the beach or water parks) and be cautious with the wording on any slogan t-shirts; wear nothing that could be perceived as offensive.

The best thing to bear in mind is, “am I dressed with modesty?” If in doubt, a helpful hotel concierge may be able to guide you.

Dubai Dress Code: What Should I Wear to the Beach in Dubai?

You will see huge variations in what is considered appropriate at the beach and resort wear. For men, longer shorts are much preferred to skimpy brief-style Speedos – though I bet you’ll see plenty of budgie smugglers these days.

For ladies, where do we start?! It can be a minefield, and these days, there are very differing views on just how liberal attitudes are in Dubai in the 2020s. How much skin is too much skin? And on what parts of the body?!

You will see many Muslim women prefer to wear a full-length burkini by the water. Whilst at the opposite end of the spectrum, it’s not unusual at all to see extremely skimpy two-piece bikinis at exclusive beach clubs. Being topless is still a strict no-no.

For modesty, we would suggest something in between that you feel comfortable in. Anything scanty, and yes, you will get stared at. However, also be respectful of your surroundings; if there are many families present, it’s not appropriate to have everything on display. Whereas in an adults-only beach bar, you may find almost anything, except being outright naked, might be acceptable.

It is very important to note that when NOT at the beach or pool areas, cover up! This includes the public areas of your hotel or resort, or if you are going into a restaurant. A full abaya is not necessary, but it’s recommended that ladies wear an overshirt or dress over it. For men, wearing any top that covers the bare chest is appropriate.

Public beaches will each have their own rules. At Jumeirah Beach, for example, they ask that women be fully covered, ie, you must have a sun top or rashguard on over your bathers. Not a bad idea in the sun anyway, but this may come as a surprise if you’re accustomed to the more liberal rules in resorts. In other places like The Beach, JBR, the rules are more relaxed.

If you are asked by security to cover up a little, do so without argument. Security officers are well within their right to call the police if you do not cooperate or become abusive – remember this is a big no-no in Dubai.

Dubai Dress Code: What Do I Wear in the Desert in Dubai?

A desert safari is one of the most popular excursions to undertake in Dubai. It does, however, raise questions about how to dress appropriately. You have not only heat and sand to contend with but desert activities which may involve bouncing about, riding camels, or taking on the dunes.

We would suggest wearing breathable natural materials to cope with the heat and sweat, but long shorts or long trousers are more appropriate for ladies than a long flowing dress, as pretty as it may look in photos.

Dubai Dress Code: What are children expected to wear in Dubai?

Prepubescent children should feel free to dress as they please, but teenagers have the same dress requirements as adults outlined above; this should be judged on their maturity rather than age alone.

You will notice that local children are dressed from head to toe, regardless of the weather. The traditional local dress is usually reserved for religious occasions and special events for kids. However, even in the summer, Emirati children tend to wear long clothing, even playing outside.

Visiting children are not obliged to do so and should dress accordingly for the weather. Dresses, shorts, or skirts on girls are absolutely fine (though if they are engaging in adventurous activities, it’s a good idea to wear leggings or tights underneath a dress or skirt in any situation).

A Brief History of Dubai

From a small fishing village, Dubai grew into a regionally important port town with a population of around 20,000 by the 1920s. However, the collapse of the pearl industry and subsequent economic depression hit the city hard.

After the discovery of oil in the 1960s, Dubai truly began its rapid modernisation. Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, one of the founding fathers of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Dubai at the time, recognised that oil was a limited resource for the city.

During his 32-year rule, Sheikh Rashid’s ambition and vision drove the development of important infrastructure projects such as Port Rashid, Shindagha tunnel, Jebel Ali Port, and the expansion of the Creek. These projects helped to modernise the city and establish it as a major economic hub in the region.

As Dubai has continued to expand towards Abu Dhabi, the area around the Creek has become known as “Old Dubai”. This area was once the centre of the city, with the districts of Deira to the north and Bur Dubai to the south playing a key role in commercial trade.

In Bur Dubai and particularly in the Al Shindagha and Al Fahidi districts, buildings have been preserved and restored according to traditional architecture. Al Shindagha Museum

Al Shindagha Museum is dedicated to the history of Dubai and Emirati culture. The historical buildings have been restored and preserved in order to showcase traditional Emirati architecture. Some of the foundations of the buildings date back to pre- 1900s.

A few modern elements have been incorporated into the architecture to update and innovate the visitor experience. Like the neighbouring areas of Al Fahidi and Al Seef, you will feel transported back in time, when you wander the narrow lanes between each building.

As a visitor, you start at the Welcome Centre, and you are then invited to visit themed pavilions, each dedicated to different aspects of Emirati history, life and culture. Highlights include the restored Maktoum family residence (pictured), giving a captivating insight into this family dynasty, and the Perfume house, where you will discover the significance of scents in Emirati culture and how they are created.

The museum is home to a great selection of artefacts allowing visitors to explore the history of Dubai and Emirati culture.

Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood

The Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood (previously known as Al Bastakiya) is the oldest part of the city, easy to explore on foot.

Al Fahidi Fort and Dubai Museum

Dubai Museum is located in the Al Fahidi Fort, the oldest building in Dubai, dating back to 1787.

Dedicated to all things coffee, this museum is well worth a visit. Coffee plays a big part in Emirati culture along with the wider Middle East, and here you can learn all about the cultural significance of this drink.

The Coffee Museum is housed in a traditional building with a wind tower, typical of the Gulf region. The museum covers the history of coffee from its origins in Ethiopia to its spread around the world. It includes a range of artefacts and equipment related to the coffee industry, such as antique coffee grinders, roasters, and pots.

Visitors can also learn about the various types of coffee beans and brewing methods and can participate in educational workshops and tastings to learn more about the history and culture of coffee.

Coin Museum

Arabian Tea House

This café opened in 1997 as Basta Arts Café, when Al Fahidi was still called Al Bastakia. It has since become a cultural institution with numerous branches in the UAE and abroad.

Enjoy traditional Emirati cuisine and hospitality in the original branch of the teahouse. It is located inside a peaceful courtyard, where you can escape the heat as you relax in the shade with a cold drink or a traditional coffee.

Do be aware that it can get busy, and the café doesn’t accept reservations from Friday to Sunday.

Note that there are now multiple branches of the Arabian Tea House. The original is found in the Al Faihidi Historical neighbourhood, but further branches serving the same delicacies can be found in Jumeirah Beach, Mercato Mall, Jumeirah Archaeological site and Souk Al Shansiyah (Sharjah).

SMCCU

The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding is an organisation that aims to promote cultural understanding and tolerance in the UAE. Situated in amongst some of the city’s oldest restored buildings, it is an essential stop in Dubai for culture lovers.

It was founded in 1998 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and the ruler of the Emirate of Dubai, with the goal of fostering greater understanding and harmony between the various cultures and communities that make up the UAE.

The SMCCU offers a range of programmes and activities that are designed to educate visitors and residents about Emirati culture and help them learn more about the local way of life. These programmes include guided tours of local neighbourhoods, traditional Emirati meals, and lectures and workshops on various cultural topics.

The SMCCU also hosts several events throughout the year, including cultural festivals, film screenings, art exhibits and Ramadan Iftars.

Textile Souk, Bur Dubai Old Souk

Not far from Al Faidi Histroical Neighbourhood on the Bur Dubai side of the creek, you’ll find one of the most popular souks in Dubai. Wander through the busy lanes as you shop for colourful fabrics and garments.

Come prepared to practice your bartering skills, and do note that some shops may still prefer cash over credit card.

Opening hours for the souks:

• The souk is generally open between 10:00 AM and 10:00 PM Saturday to Thursday, though many shopkeepers will close during the middle of the day.
• Friday is normally only open after 4:00 PM.

Etihad Museum

The Etihad Museum is dedicated to the modern history of Dubai and the formation of the United Arab Emirates as a nation. Inside the museum, visitors can explore a number of interactive exhibits and displays that showcase the rich history and culture of the UAE. The exhibits are divided into several galleries, each focusing on a different aspect of the country’s history. Jumeirah Mosque

The Jumeirah Mosque is a landmark building with its two minarets standing tall above the main prayer hall. It was built in 1979 as a gift by the former ruler Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum.

The interior of the mosque is just as beautiful as the exterior, with a central dome and arched walls decorated with intricate patterns and calligraphy. The mosque can accommodate up to 1,500 worshippers at a time, and it is a popular place for Friday prayers.

One of the unique features of the Jumeirah Mosque is that it is one of the few mosques in the United Arab Emirates that is open to non-Muslim visitors. However, despite this notion that “anything goes”, it is important to remember that Dubai is located in the Middle East in a Muslim country, and the cultural and legal framework can differ quite a lot from what you might be used to.

As a visitor to this country, try to be respectful of cultural sensitivities, and please understand when it is no longer about etiquette, but the law. Every year, a small number of visitors will land themselves in hot water by ignoring or misunderstanding the rules.

When visiting Dubai, recognising that the culture and regulations may be different to your home country will go a long way in avoiding unpleasant situations.

It is also worth noting that Dubai is significantly more relaxed, in many instances, compared to other emirates, so do bear this in mind if venturing beyond Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

This guide will let you know what to expect when visiting Dubai and how to ensure your time in the city remains problem-free.

Dress Code in Dubai

Do women have to cover themselves in Dubai? NO

Men and women are encouraged to follow the guidelines of dressing modestly. That being said, women are not legally required to cover arms and legs, and you are likely to see women in varying degrees of skimpy outfits.

However, as a visitor, please try to dress respectfully to avoid offending. Also, remember that there is a difference between being at your hotel resort or by the pool as opposed to a public space like the mall or a tourist attraction.

Do

• Endeavour to cover your shoulders, cleavage, midriff and thighs in public.
• Wear appropriate clothes for the situation, ie. bikinis and bathing suits are worn by the pool and at the beach.
• Keep your arms and legs covered when going to Government buildings and places of worship – this goes for both men and women.
• For women, bring a shawl to cover your hair, if visiting a mosque or temple.
• Do carry a shawl or cover-up, as air-conditioning can feel practically arctic in many malls and restaurants.

Don’t

• Venture to the mall or a restaurant in your swimming costume (men and women); please change into something more appropriate.
• Wear t-shirts with profane language or offensive messages.
• Get upset or aggressive if you are asked to cover up.
• Cross-dress. This is forbidden, and you can get arrested.
• Bathe topless or in the nude. This is strictly not allowed.

Alcohol in Dubai

Are you allowed to drink alcohol? – YES

The legal drinking age is 21 years old in Dubai, and non-Muslims can drink responsibly in designated venues. Legal drinking age differs in other Emirates, and alcohol is completely banned in the Emirate of Sharjah.

Do

• Enjoy alcohol at licenced venues (usually hotels and restaurants) or in private.
• Feel free to bring a maximum of four litres of alcohol from Duty Free.
• Bring your passport with you, if you would like to purchase alcohol from any of the licenced liquor stores like African + Eastern or MMI.

Don’t

• Drink alcohol in public places or engage in drunk and disorderly behaviour in public, it can land you in jail.
• Drink and drive! There is no tolerance for driving under the influence in Dubai. Blood alcohol limit is zero. Instead, DO book Safe Driver or Zofeur – essentially a designated driver that will come to your location and drive you and your vehicle home safely.

Public Displays of Affection in Dubai

Can you show affection in public? YES, but keep it PG.

Generally, be mindful of your interactions with people of the opposite sex. Everyone has different comfort levels, so it is often safer to err on the side of caution.

Do

• Greet a friend with a hug or a quick peck on the cheek.
• Hold hands in public. This is generally not seen as an issue. You will see people holding hands; this is especially common among the South Asian diaspora, and is a sign of friendship.
• Feel free to stay in a hotel room as an unmarried couple. Since October 2021, many rules have been relaxed, and while it used to be a criminal offence, you can now stay in the same room or co-habitat without facing legal issues.

Don’t

• Offer to shake hands with a member of the opposite sex if you don’t know them. In order not to cause offence, wait for them to take the initiative.
• Show further physical affection towards a partner, like kissing or hugging, anything with sexual undertones. This could be seen as indecent behaviour and is against the law.

Ramadan in Dubai

Can I eat during the day during Ramadan – YES

Ramadan is a lovely month in Dubai – a month of respect, reflection, tolerance, and charity. Tourists are sometimes told to avoid Dubai during this time, but it can be a great opportunity to get a little closer under its skin.

Food consumption used to be allowed only in screened-off areas, but recently, screens were removed, and you are now allowed to eat and drink in restaurants.

You should still be extra mindful of the host culture during Ramadan. Please note that fasting does not apply to the sick, elderly, pregnant women, menstruating women or children. They should feel free to eat and drink as needed but should show consideration.

Do:

• Be respectful, and if you need a sip of water in public, please be discreet.
• Try an Iftar meal (when fast is broken at sundown) or for the night owls, try Suhoor (meal before sunrise).
• Note that many food outlets operate with different opening hours and serving timings during Ramadan. Many shops and attractions may also have different opening hours during this month, so best to check timings in advance.
• Try to make even more of an effort to dress modestly during this month.
• Do venture to the mall for late-night shopping. During Ramadan, many shops are open much later to accommodate activities during the non-fasting hours.
• Be mindful of the hour leading up to iftar, the breaking of the fast, as this is when tempers might fray.

Don’t

• Eat or drink in public spaces outside of restaurants i.e. walking on the street etc, unless you really must, or you are exempt from fasting. Even then, do so with discretion.
• Offer food or drink to people who are fasting.
• Be surprised if some restaurants stop serving alcohol or playing music in order to observe Ramadan.
• Pass public judgement on the rights and wrongs of fasting.

Pork in Dubai

Can you eat pork in Dubai – YES

Do head to one of the larger international supermarkets, where you can purchase pork products from the non-halal section (usually segregated from the main shop). The door may be marked “for Non-Muslims only”.

Don’t expect pork in restaurants or most food outlets. A few eateries will have obtained a license to serve pork, but these are few and far between.

Drugs in Dubai

Are you allowed to use recreational drugs in Dubai? – NO

Do

• Check the list of restricted medications here before travelling to Dubai. You may need permission. Apply here.
• Make sure not to bring products with banned ingredients such as CBD oil or poppy seeds even if it is in skincare products or on top of a bun.

Don’t

• Import or use any narcotics or recreational drugs – there is zero tolerance and punishments are severe.

Getting from A to Z in Dubai

Are women allowed to drive? Yes

Anyone with a valid driving licence is technically allowed to drive in Dubai. If you don’t fancy driving yourself there is comprehensive public transport available in the form of the Metro, monorail and wide network of taxis.

Do

• Make sure to get an international driving permit in order to rent a car in Dubai. See more here.
• Consider taking the Metro as an alternative mode of transport. Remember that the last carriage is designated for women and children. Men will be asked to move carriage or risk getting a fine.

Don’t

• Use your mobile phone while driving – this is illegal, and you can get fined.
• Don’t be surprised if you see people going at higher speeds than the signed speed limit. There is a 20km buffer on most major roads in Dubai, before a speeding ticket is issued.
• Make rude hand gestures, as this can land you in real trouble. It isn’t just offensive but also against the law. Explained in more detail here.

Public and Online Code of Conduct

Can I make statements in public or online that are critical of Dubai and its culture, or post on social media without consent? No

Do

• Ask permission before photographing people, especially women and children. It is not just good etiquette but also a requirement.
• Under Cybercrime Laws, photographing someone and posting online without their consent is against the law and could carry a hefty fine or even jail time. Read more here.
• Refrain from filming or photographing government buildings, offices or entities, or people in public roles like the Police. This is strictly prohibited.
• Only use a drone in Dubai if you are a resident and have the correct licenses and permissions.

Don’t

• Share fake news online, even on WhatsApp. You may get fined.
• Criticise Dubai, its rulers, or Islam in public or online. The laws are strict in this regard, and you could end up in jail.
• Use obscene or insulting language in person or online, as it is taken very seriously. This is rule that may come as a surprise to some visitors, and it can often escalate situations unnecessarily. Please remain calm and polite in any interaction.

The reality is that not following any of the above recommendations is likely to receive a few raised eyebrows at most. This is partly why visitors often find the different guidelines rather opaque, as they see them not being enforced on many occasions.

While you may see people getting away with not following the guidelines, please know that if someone takes offence to your actions and decide to make an official complaint, you may be held accountable in accordance with the law.

If you find that someone challenges your actions, please avoid being argumentative;, instead, respond in a respectful and polite manner. That way, you are much more likely to be let off with a warning, where aggression and rude behaviour could escalate an already delicate situation.

By showing respect and following the above Do’s and Don’ts, you should be able to concentrate on enjoying your time in Dubai.

How to Get to Sharjah From Dubai

Sharjah is the Emirate immediately to the east of Dubai, the city centre is around 30 kilometres away by car, taxi or bus.

Driving your own car or a taxi will take approximately 20 to 30 minutes via E11 (though be prepared for fast-paced, and solid traffic).

If you go by bus, there are many different routes crossing between Dubai and Sharjah, terminating or passing through Al Jubail Bus Station. From there, you can catch local bus services to key attractions. The bus fare from Dubai can be purchased using your Nol card, expect to pay AED 10.

Once in Sharjah, the Hop on Hop Off Tourist bus is a great way of getting between Sharjah’s key attractions we’ve listed here.

Legal requirements for getting married in Dubai.

There are a set of legal pre-marital requirements and procurers that need to be completed for a marriage to be recognised in Dubai.

Although some rules differ depending on the couple’s nationalities and religion, every couple needs to provide the following:

1. The bride’s approval
2. Couple’s valid passports
3. Couple’s visa status
4. Atleast one person in the marriage contract must have a valid UAE residence visa. This can be either the groom, the bride of the bride’s guardian.
5. The bride and groom both must provide positive pre-marital health screening certificates, issued by DHA primary healthcare centres. The screening is a mandatory requirement and done to limit the risk of spreading communicable and inherited diseases. Obtaining the certificate costs AED 260.

The rules for a Muslim marriage are different from those of non-Muslims.

Muslim marriages must be conducted at a UAE Sharia Court or via authorised marriage officers (Mazoons) appointed by the Ministry of Justice, where the marriage takes place in accordance with the Sharia law. An application for a marriage contract and its payment, of AED 200 must be done beforehand. 

Regardless of the couple’s nationalities, at the Islamic marriages, both the bride and groom must be present, along with the bride’s father and at least two Muslim witnesses.

There are specific rules in place if one of the partners practices a religion other than Islam, and best to check it with the UAE Sharia Court.

Non-muslim couples getting married in Dubai need to have their nuptials registered at their respective embassies or consultants of their home countries. Depending on the couple’s nationality, the embassy or consulate may have other specific requirements and documents to submit, in order for getting married in Dubai, so it is advisable to check these beforehand.

Documentation from the home country needs to be approved by the UAE Foreign Ministry. The religious nuptials can take place in the place of worship as per the couple’s religion.

Muslims are required as one of the Five Pillars of Islam to perform Salat (prayer) five times a day. Islam is the official religion of Dubai and the United Arab Emirates so it is something you are bound to come across during your time in the country, be it hearing the call to prayer or seeing the signs for prayer rooms in the mall, or even the arrow on the roof of your hotel bedroom!

How many times do Muslims pray each day?

Salat (or prayers) are performed at the following times every day:

• Fajr: dawn prayer
• Dhuhr: midday prayer
• Asr: late afternoon prayer
• Maghrib: sunset prayer
• Isha: evening prayer

Prayer times vary around the world as they are calculated based on the position of the sun. At each prayer time a set number of “rakat” or “rak’ah” – prescribed movements and words must be performed – more below.

What are the prayer times in Dubai today?

The “Call to Prayer”

The prayer times, as detailed above are made known by a Muezzin (caller) where “Adhan” is recited, usually from loudspeakers in a mosque. You will likely hear the call to prayer from most places in the city.

“Iqamah” the internal call for prayer, is performed 20 minutes after Adhan (25 minutes after Fajr and 5 minutes after Maghrib) to establish that prayers are about to start.

Midday prayers on a Friday (“Jumu’ah”) are of particular importance as they are a congregational prayer.

How are Muslim prayers performed?

All of these prayers are recited while facing “Qibla”- the direction of Kaaba, the sacred mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Muslims must wash before prayer in a procedure called “wudu”- purification. The prayer then involves a series of “rakats” – set positions and at every change in positions “Allah is Great” is said.

It is prefered that the prayers are performed in a mosque to allow for fellowship, but it may be performed anywhere. Men and women perform their prayers separately.

Non-Muslim behaviour during prayer time

There is no need for tourists to change their behaviour during prayer times, however, shops and restaurants are asked to cease music and entertainment during the call to prayer and until prayer time is over.

Some smaller shops may close briefly during these times, but generally speaking in large malls and in hospitality businesses you will not experience store closures.

Other Religious Observances in Dubai

Religious holidays in Dubai follow the Hijri Calendar, which varies from the Gregorian calendar by approximately 10 days each year, as it is subject to moon cycles. You can read more about Dubai religious & public holidays here.

The most important one for visitors to be aware of is the Holy Month of Ramadan. During this time, there are strict observances to be aware of, including day time fasting. You can learn more about what to expect in Dubai during Ramadan here.

Can you visit a Mosque in Dubai?

Not all mosques in Dubai and the UAE are open for non-Muslim tourists, however, there are some extremely beautiful and famous examples which are open during set times and with strict rules for visitors to observe.

In Dubai, Jumeirah Mosque can be visited daily at 10am and 2pm (except Friday’s) with SMCCU. There is no need to pre-book, but there is a cover charge of 35AED per person. Registration starts 30 minutes prior and light refreshments are included in the presentation. Modest dress is preferred and traditional outfits can be borrowed at the mosque.

There is also the Al Farooq Omar Bin Al Khattab Mosque (known as the Blue Mosque). They do not run organised tours but if you are well covered you are permitted to enter the mosque as a tourist or as part of a guided tour group. This guided tour includes a stop at the Blue Mosque.

What are the Five Pillars of Islam?

As we mentioned, prayer is only one of the Five Pillars of Islam. In their entirety these are:

• Shahadah: to profess that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his prophet
• Salat: to pray five times a day
• Zakat: To pay an alms to the needy and poor
• Sawm: to fast during the holy month of Ramadan (the ninth month of the Islamic calendar/Hijri calendar)
• Hajj: to do the pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca at least once during the Muslims’ lifetime, if they can

The confusion can largely reign from the fact that Dubai is not only a city but an Emirate (or state) – and it’s surprisingly not a capital city!!!  So let’s take a more detailed look at exactly what is Dubai – then we’ll help you place it on a map!!

Dubai is the largest city in a country called the United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates is a Gulf country in the Middle East which has coasts facing both the Arabain Gulf (Persian Gulf – but don’t call it that in front of an Emirati!) and the Gulf of Oman to the east.   The UAE neighbours Saudi Arabia to the south and west and Oman to the south-east (and a tiny bit in the north – we’ll get on to that!).

Is Dubai a country?

Nope! This is the biggest misconception.  Bid bold and brassy but a city and an Emirate, NOT an entire country, just like Abu Dhabi. The country is called the United Arab Emirates.

Is Dubai the capital of the UAE?

No, often mistaken as Dubai is the largest city in the UAE, Dubai is not the capital of the United Arab Emirates.  That crown goes to Abu Dhabi which sits approximately 130kms to the west, about an hour away by road.

What’s an Emirate?

Emirates are sort of like states, they are ruled over by a Sheikh, also called a Sheikdom.  In 1971, the United Arab Emirates was formed with the union of 6 of these Sheikdoms. A further Emirate joined in 1972 bringing us the 7 Emirates of the UAE we know today.  The countries birthday is celebrated in a massive event ever 2 December.

The whole  Emirate of Dubai, including the city and desert areas is 3,885 km²

What is the population of Dubai?

There is no census carried out in Dubai, however, reports seem to vary between 2.4 million and 3.3 million!

The biggest surprise might be that only around 11% of the city’s population are considered native Emirati’s. The vast majority of Dubai’s population is expatriate workers from nearly 200 different nations!  It is one of the most diverse city populations in the world!

Why are there so many men in Dubai?!

The male to female ratio in Dubai is believed to be 75%:25%.

This is driven by the largely male Asian workforce in the construction and services sectors, predominantly Indian who are believed to make up as much as 50% of the city’s population.

This does not mean it is an unsafe place for female tourists to visit. Quite the opposite, we will share more soon on women’s safety in Dubai.

Who rules Dubai?

Whilst there is a flag for each of the Emirates that make up the UAE, the individual flags are very infrequently displayed. You are most likely to see only the unified flag of the United Arab Emirates. This flag is red on the left and has hortizonal black, white and green stripes.

Is Dubai Expensive to visit?

What’s the time zone in Dubai?

Dubai’s time zone is called GST – Gulf Standard Time and it sits at UTC+4.  There are no daylight savings changes implemented in the summer months.

What is the currency in Dubai?

The United Arab Emirates uses the UAE Dirham – expressed as AED or dhs.

Is Dubai Muslim?

The majority of Dubai’s native population are Sunni Muslim. Sharia Law is followed in Dubai and the United Arab Emirates.

What language do they speak in Dubai?

Arabic is the country’s legal first language. However, English is widely spoken as a common language between all workers and locals. Signposts and any official documents will come in both Arabic and English.

As a tourist to Dubai, you would not have to learn any Arabic to enjoy visiting the city, however, a few small words such as “Shukran” (thank you) never go astray. You could well go an entire trip to the city and NOT speak to an actual Emirati.

There are literally dozens of languages spoken in Dubai at home and amongst workers, reflective of such a diverse population.

What do they wear in Dubai?

Traditional dress is worn in public by native Emiratis. Men wear white dishdashas while women wear a black Abaya and Shayla love their heads (NOT a full face Burqa).

Tourists and expatriate residents are not expected to dress in traditional clothing, but modesty in public places IS expected. The rules can get complicated though and many have differing opinions on what is acceptable or not in Dubai in the 21st Century.
