Dubai Weather in May

Daytime temperatures rise significantly during May. The average daytime maximum is 37.8°C (100°F), but don’t be surprised if temperatures reach as high as 43.5°C (110°F) by the end of the month. Overnight lows average 25.2°C (77°F).

Humidity in Dubai is at its lowest in May, so it is drier than usual, and rainfall is unlikely, though not unheard of. However, dust storms are common at this time of year, impacting visibility and air quality.

Sea temperatures are not quite at their summer peaks, but they do warm significantly in May, making it ideal for beachgoers to enjoy a dip in the azure waters of the Persian Gulf. You can expect water temperatures ranging from 26.3°C (79.3°F) to 31.2°C (86.2°F) by month-end.

Dubai With Kids in May 2026

Dubai is a city burgeoning with family-friendly activities year-round.

May is a popular time to visit Dubai with your family, as schools in Europe take a short half-term break towards the end of the month. Schools locally often take a short break at this time, too (with Eid Al Adha occurring in the last week of May this year, expect it to be a busy time!

As May is getting quite hot to be outdoors unless you’re in the water, why not try these ideas:

• Cool off at one of Dubai’s outdoor adventure playgrounds, such as Aquaventure at Atlantis the Palm or Wild Wadi attached to Jumeirah Beach Hotel. We have a complete water park comparison guide here to figure out which suits your family best.

• Head out to Dubai Parks & Resorts—four theme parks in one location! Little ones will love Legoland Dubai, while older kids will likely prefer Motiongate. Book tickets in advance to save on gate passes! (Note that as significant portions of these parks are outdoors, they may be subject to closure due to the current conflict – check opening schedules online.)
• You can still catch the end of the season at Dubai Miracle Garden too, though, go early to beat the heat. They are currently running a resident’s special offer: AED 30 through until 31 May, and under-12s will go free!

• Enjoy an evening ziplining through the Ghaf tree forest in Mushrif Park at Aventura.

Glide Your Way Around the Ice Skating Rink

It’s hard to believe an entire Olympic-sized rink sits within the heart of the Dubai Mall. Open to all ages and abilities, you can learn to skate through to advanced skaters showing off their moves to the crowd. All your ice skating gear is there to rent.

Get the Kids Working at KidZania Dubai

One of the best Dubai Mall activities for kids, this real-to-life city is a 7,000 m2 edutainment centre, incorporating over 60 real-life activities for kids to enjoy, from role-playing to critical thinking to crafts and sports and fun ways to spend the KidZoos (money!) that they earn for working.

Ideal for your kids aged 4 to 12 years old (they need to be independent of a parent/carer to join in).

Land an Aircraft with the Emirates A380 Simulator

Have you ever wondered what it feels like to sit at the helm of the world’s largest commercial aircraft?

This cutting-edge simulator can be found on the 2nd floor of the Dubai Mall (opposite the Aquarium entrance). You can enjoy a 15, 30 or 60-minute lesson on landing this megalithic aeroplane at 12 of the world’s busiest airports.

Hysteria is a haunted house experience like no other – explore through a 15-room mansion simulator. Certainly not for the faint-hearted, this extreme fear experience is only for your thrill-seekers and adrenaline junkies; you’ll find it at the Cinema end of the Mall, Level 2/P7 – recommended for 16 years+.

Dubai Fountains (Free)

Please note that the Dubai Fountains were temporarily closed in May 2025 for extensive renovations; an official reopening date is yet to be announced

One of the best free activities in Dubai is sitting outside. At the foot of the Burj Khalifa, you will see the breathtaking Dubai Fountain show. Beautifully choreographed performances happen daily at 1:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m., and again in the evenings from 6:30 p.m. and every half hour until midnight.

We highly recommend grabbing a spot at a restaurant that has a view of the Dubai Fountains to maximise your experience and avoid the often crushing crowds on weekends.

For a truly special way to enjoy the fountain shows, take a traditional abra boat out onto Burj Lake to see the action up close (paid), or step out onto the Burj Lake boardwalk (paid) for the closest views.

Time need: The show itself is only about 5 minutes, but allow yourself 30 minutes getting outside, find your position, and keep a lookout for the following light show on Burj Khalifa

Wander & Dine at Souk al Bahar

The experience doesn’t end within the Dubai Mall. Keep heading outside the Mall (on the Lower Ground Floor, underneath the flagship Apple store). You will find a bridge over Burj Lake, which takes you to Dubai Souk al Bahar.

Catch a Show at Dubai Opera

The city’s premier cultural entertainment hub always has an extensive lineup of shows throughout the year, from opera and ballet to Westend and Broadway favourites. It is just a few minutes walk from the fashion end of Dubai Mall to Dubai Opera, making a perfect pairing for your evening entertainment.

Shopping and Trade in Dubai

Let’s turn the clock back to what Dubai is all about.  Unlike much of the rest of the country of the United Arab Emirates which was made up of little more than fishing and pearl-diving villages prior to the discovery of oil in the 1960s, Dubai has been an active port city for well over a century.

Dubai grew significantly in the late 19th-century as tax exemption rules were brought in, encouraging a large foreign workforce and traders to arrive en masse to the port city set up on Dubai Creek. The city has earned various nicknames over the years including “The City of Merchants” and “The City of Gold”.

As generations have passed, the city has certainly changed in population and industry, but one thing it has kept its reputation for is retail trade! Dubai Creek is as bustling as ever as a trading port, albeit cargo ships now dock at the much larger Jebel Ali Port. Smaller dhows can still be found in their dozens unloading their goods in Deira.

While the traditional souks of Old Dubai in Deira still exist today, vast modern shopping malls have become the place to shop in Dubai. Bargain hunters will know, however, that you need to scratch below the surface for Dubai’s best buys.

Whilst the UAE now has a value added tax on goods sold of 5%, there are still plenty of shopping bargains to be had in Dubai, you’ve just got to find the right places to shop.

Best Places to Shop in Dubai

Modern Dubai

In modern Dubai, the best place to shop is the Dubai Mall. This is the single largest mall in the world, with over 1,200 shops. You can find virtually anything you want here. Check out neighbouring Souq Al Bahr too – lots of lovely souvenirs to be found, but you will be paying top $$$ here!

Of course, there are plenty of runners-up when it comes to modern shopping malls across the city: Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Festival City Mall, City Centre Mirdif, City Centre Deira, Ibn Battuta Mall… the list goes on!

Another spot well known for selling traditional (though often priced for the tourist market) pieces is the modern Souk Madinat Jumeirah, adjacent to the Jumeirah complex of hotels. Alternatively, Al Seef along Dubai Creek, made to look like a traditional souk though you’ll find an eclect range from antiques and spices to I Love Dubai t-shirts.

Souvenirs – What to Buy in Dubai

So how much suitcase space will you need? Here’s our guide to “must-buys” when you’re visiting Dubai for some authentic souvenirs and fabulous memorable gifts from the Middle East.

Persian Rugs

Persian rugs are one of the most famous things to buy in Dubai. This city is renowned for its gorgeous textiles, and it’s a wonderful way to decorate your home. The really high-quality products can be a little expensive, but you can find more affordable rugs in various souks throughout the city.

Where to buy the best Persian rugs in Dubai: National Iranian Carpets and Persian Carpet House are both located at Souq Madinat Jumeirah or Bur Dubai Textile Souk.

Oudh and Bakhoor

Oudh and Bakhoor are both two of the best things to buy in Dubai. Both of these products provide a very distinct, Middle Eastern scent. They make a great gift for anyone who appreciates sophisticated fragrances. Oudh is an oil made from agarwood resin and tends to be a little more expensive. Bakhoor is simply agarwood chips that release an aroma when burned.

Where to buy the best Oudh and Bakhoor in Dubai: Visit Perfume Souk at Deira for Oudh or Spice Souk for Bakhoor. You can also find these items in perfume shops in any mall, though expect to pay a higher price.

Aladdin Lamps

Aladdin lamps have an obvious charm for anyone who grew up loving the classic Disney film. Besides the nostalgia factor, these brass lamps are beautifully carved and sometimes feature intricate inlay work. Also, you can often haggle to get them at a cheaper price, making them one of the best cheap things to buy in Dubai that will look great on your mantlepiece.

Spices

An important part of Arabic cuisine is the rich flavour that comes from cooking with authentic spices. There is an immense variety of spices to be found in Dubai with influences from all over the region. Transform your cooking at home by bringing some traditional spices back from Dubai with you.

As well as cooking spices, there are plentiful aromatic spices too. (Just check the customs rules on spices for the country you are heading to next).

Where to buy the best spices in Dubai: The Dubai Spice Souk, of course! And major local supermarkets such as Lulu and Carrefour have extensive spice counter selections.

Lanterns

Lanterns are some of the most elegant Dubai souvenirs you can find. These often serve as centrepieces in Arabic homes, and they could serve as a centrepiece in yours as well. They’re often made with very intricate designs using mirrors and stained glass. Prices can range from very affordable to quite expensive.

Where to buy the best lanterns in Dubai: Dragon Mart, Karama Market, Antique Museum, Al Seef and Homes R Us are all excellent places to shop for lanterns in Dubai.

Dates

If you’re still wondering what to buy in Dubai, this is an excellent way to treat yourself while participating in an important part of Middle Eastern culture. Dates, or dried fruits, are often given as gifts at the end of the fasting of Ramadan. Along with being a tasty snack, they also have numerous health benefits. There are over 20 varieties in all. Whether for your own pleasure or a beautifully presented gift, you simply can’t leave Dubai without dates!

Where to buy the best dates in Dubai: Go to the Deira Food Market for the best fresh dates. You can also find packed dates at any supermarket in Dubai and many gift shops. Bateel are often touted as the best (and will let you try before you buy!).

Arabic Perfume Oils

This is another way to bring the unique fragrances of Dubai home with you. Arabic perfume oils, also known as Arabic attars or ittar, are made from plant extracts. They are very popular among both men and women. There are literally dozens of different oils to choose from but don’t worry, the vendors will willingly help you pick the fragrance that’s right for you.

Where to buy the best perfume oil in Dubai: The Perfume Souk at Deira is the best place to shop for perfumes. You can also find perfume shops in any mall in the city.

Hookahs (Shisha Pipes)

Smoking from hookahs is a very popular pastime in Dubai. You can find one in almost any household and many bars and cafes throughout the city offer shisha. This can be a great way to relax at home, and it’s a beautiful souvenir even if you don’t partake in smoking yourself.

Furthermore, it’s a surprisingly affordable souvenir. It’s an excellent choice if you’re still wondering what to buy in Dubai – though do take care with your packing as the glass is fragile.

Pashmina Shawls

A pashmina shawl is one of the most fashionable things to buy in Dubai (and super practical!). These are made from cashmere derived from goat hair, and they make a great gift for your significant other. The most authentic pashmina shawls can get pretty expensive. If you want to save some money, opt for shawls made of silk or viscose instead.

Where to buy the best pashminas in Dubai: These can be found at the Pashmina House, Karama Market, or Bur Dubai Textile Souk.

Arabic Coffee & Coffee Pots

The distinct taste of Arabic Coffee referred to as “qahwa” is likely to be a lasting memory from a visit to Dubai and the UAE. It is, after all, one of the most common acts of hospitality to be served a small cup of coffee as a welcome drink by your hosts.

And what would your coffee be without a coffee pot? Arabica coffee pots, known as “dallah” locally can not only be visually beautiful souvenirs from your trip to Dubai, but also a practical item to use at home. They are distinctive for their long spouts and ornate handles. Be warned, many dallah found in souvenir shops are decorative only, the most functional type to look for is made of copper.

Where to buy it: Dubai Coffee Museum in Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood Villa 44 and the Dubai Spice Souk. The Antique Museum again would be another sure bet for finding a good range of collectible items.

Arabian Dagger

Watch the Dubai Fountains show

A great starting point for many visitors to Dubai is to head to Downtown Dubai and the Dubai Mall. Every lunchtime and throughout the evening, visitors are treated to the visual spectacle of the Dubai Fountain Show.

Perfect choreographed dancing fountains move to music, ranging from modern pop hits to traditional Arabian music, under the foot of the Burj Khalifa (which also runs its own towering LED light show throughout the evening).

Enjoy the IMAGINE sound and light show

A nightly show at Dubai Festival City, this sensory experience harnesses the power of light, water and fire in one incredible display, using the world’s largest water projection screen.

Dubai Festival City is a great location for those who want to stay close to Dubai airport and the free shows held hourly between 7:00 pm and 11:00 pm are a fabulous family entertainment option (and in our experience a bit less crowded than the Dubai Fountains).

See the largest fountain show in the world

Just when you thought that was it, along comes another even bigger and better than the last! The Palm Fountain which opened in October 2020 set the Guinness World Record as the largest fountain show in the world. Offering nightly shows every 30 minutes between 7:00 pm and midnight, your best vantage point is from The Pointe entertainment district at the top of the trunk of Palm Jumeirah.

Spot flamingos in the wetlands

Head to the Ras Al Khor wildlife sanctuary on the outskirts of the city to spot over 170 native species that call the protected wetlands area home – the stunning pink flamingos are a crowd favourite. The wetlands are a beautiful free urban oasis with airconditioned viewing platforms and a Lagoon Hide for quiet observation of its residents.

Turtle feeding at Jumeirah Al Naseem

The Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Project, based inside Jumeirah Al Naseem Hotel (adjacent to Souk Madinat Jumeirah) is a fabulous opportunity to see some of the country’s native turtle species. During the cooler months of the year, a FREE weekly turtle feeding session is held at 11:00 am on a Wednesday. [NB we’re waiting to see if this one returns post-COVID]

The session is only short with priority given to children (and very busy on local school holidays), or you can turn up at any time and try and spot these magnificent creatures floating in the lagoon.

The Walk & The Beach

One of Dubai’s most iconic beachfront and leisure precincts can be found in the JBR area of the city. There are plenty of tourist traps beckoning for your cash along the way, but if you are happy to hold firmly onto your wallet, it costs you nothing to stroll along and enjoy the atmosphere especially beautiful at sunset. The street art installations are popular and in the winter months enjoy The Market.

Soak up the sun at Kite Beach

Although there are plenty of beaches along the Arabain Gulf coast, Kite Beach is one of our favourites for enjoying the rays as the locals do. There are plenty of water sports at Kite Beach, but there’s no entry fee for simply pulling up for a towel and enjoying the sun.

Picnic at Dubai Creek Park

One of the largest parks in Dubai, there’s always a plethora of family activities going on in this green oasis that hugs the western bank of Dubai Creek. Entry is 5 AED per person to access the extensive grounds, botanical gardens, playgrounds and barbeque and picnicking areas. For an extra charge, there is a Dolphanairum, a planetarium in Children’s City and even a cable car for some unique and stunning city views.

Fresh seafood at Jumeirah Fishing Harbour

A little surprise packet tucked away in the more suburban area of Dubai, the Jumeirah Fishing Harbour is a modern dining area giving a traditional touch to the waterfront. The area, close to Mercato Mall has fully revitalised a few years ago. Most come for the fresh seafood and dining options, or simply enjoy the jetty. Coming at dawn is your best time to see the harbour in action.

Enjoy the sunset from the Palm Boardwalk

Covering the outer crescent of the Palm Jumeirah, enjoy a stunning sunset walk around Dubai’s most exclusive resort zone. There are food trucks and benches along the wooden boardwalk for regular stops – though only the fit may be able to cover the whole 11km!

The boardwalk starts from the Rixos Palm Jumeirah Hotel on the Crescent’s east side to the One&Only The Palm on the west side of the crescent – one of the best free things to do on Palm Jumeirah! 

Soak in the beach vibes at La Mer

This fun and funky beachfront area truly is one of the new hot spots in Dubai. Brilliant boardwalk views back to the city skyline, fun and colourful food vans and beach huts give an utterly instagrammable backdrop.

As well as the beach itself, there are loads of free play spaces here for kids and (paid) extras including Hawa Hawa outdoor trampoline park, Roxy Cinemas and Laguna Waterpark. A great place to chill of an evening, even in the hotter months.

Discover Dubai Museum

The culturally curious will be pleased to know there is an extensive line up of museums to explore in Dubai. Most visitors have likely only heard of the Dubai Museum and Al Faihidi Fort, which only cost 3 AED to enter. Don’t let your exploring finish there, however. There are more than a dozen museums to explore around Dubai, many of them situated in the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood (mostly free or just a few dirhams for entry). Dubai Museum is currently closed for renovations.

Get lost in the streets of Al Fahidi and Al Seef

This brings us nicely to our next suggestion. After completing a tour of the Dubai Museum, the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood beckons you to come and explore. Many of the city’s original buildings have been wonderfully restored and the narrow alleyways now house galleries to tea houses as well as small museums and the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU), a key cultural bridge to understanding more about the city, Islamic culture and the people of Dubai.

Many of the events organized by SMCCU used to be free (including cultural meals and mosque tours) but there is now a cover charge for most activities. Do enquire within what is currently on their program, and if you are going to splash the cash for a Dubai experience, this is the one that will deliver the most educational value.

Nearby, the Al Faididi Historical Neighbourhood now seamlessly blends to the modern development of Al Seef, built in the traditional style of “barajeel” wind tower houses. There are plenty of restaurants and tourist traps along the way, but also wonderful shops and instalments to browse as you make your way to Dubai Creek.

Take an Abra Ride across Dubai Creek

An absolute steal at 1 AED for a traditional boat! This is one of the best authentic Dubai experiences as you sail from one side of Dubai Creek to the other. There are pricier options, as well as Dubai Creek Dhow Cruises and dining options, but nothing can beat the wind in your hair on a traditional abra!

Satisfy your senses at the Old Souks

This is a taster of true Dubai, a trading port for well over a century as you make your way through the streets and laneways of Deira on the eastern bank of Dubai Creek. The Gold and Spice Souk are the most famous, but you can also seek out the perfume souk and electronics souk.

Stroll for a bargain in Meena Bazaar

Often touted as Little India, this is a bargain hunter paradise if you are on the hunt for traditional textiles, jewellery and handicrafts. Situated in the city’s Bur Dubai area, this market area is a colourful collection of shops and laneways, along with cheap South Asian eats.

The area is affectionately nicknamed Meena Bazaar after its counterpart in India and the name has pretty much stuck since the 1970s.  The shopping district is located between Al Fahidi, Al Musalla and Al Ghubaiba streets.

Coffee Museum

Amongst Dubai’s additional museums this is one of our favourites, found at villa 44 Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. As well as learning more about the origins of coffee production and how coffee is produced around the world, you can sample traditional Emirati coffee too!

If you’ve got some hard-earned dirhams to spare (10 AED), this is where you can sit down for some authentic coffee in the upstairs cafe (includes a kids corner) and also pick up speciality coffees from around the world.

Al Shindagha Heritage Village

Situated on the banks of Dubai Creek, near Port Rashid is the Al Shindagha Historical District. The area consists of many buildings, including a Heritage Village and several museums. This is a great one to explore if you are interested in the birth of Dubai and the role of Dubai Creek.

Look out for the Diving Museum, Camel Museum, Perfume Museum and Sheikh Saeed al Maktoum House, telling an interesting story of the country’s past.

NB the Museum now has a cover charge of 15 AED for adults, 5 AED students/kids

Dubai Canal Boardwalk

The man-made canal carved into the desert sees Dubai Creek connected to the Arabian Gulf via the city’s Business Bay area. Whilst you can pay to take a ferry or cruise boat down the canal, there is a 3.2km walkway that runs alongside the canal that’s free to stroll along, particularly pretty at night. At Sheikh Zayed Road you can catch the man-made Dubai Waterfall, beautifully lit up at night.

Enjoy a ride on the Dubai Water Bus

Whilst marina cruises in Dubai can be on the pricey side, if you’d still like to enjoy the water, then pop on down to Dubai Marina and catch a leg of the Dubai Water Bus. A single journey for an adult is 3 AED and children are free.

Cool off in the Dubai Marina Walk Fountains

One especially for the little kids (but we won’t judge if the grown-ups want to join!). The beautiful sidewalk fountains can be a savour from the heat and the perfect way to cool off as you make your way around the bustling, modern Dubai Marina area of the city.

Wander City Walk area

In contrast to the older areas of Dubai, the City Walk area of Dubai is a modern entertainment area of the city. There are plenty of paid activities on hand including the Green Planet, Geek Nation and Mattel Play! Town but it’s completely free to stroll around the modern, design-inspired streets and enjoy free street entertainment, particularly in the cooler winter months.

A photo stop at Burj al Arab

OK, you can pretty much put aside your next paycheck if you actually want to go inside the iconic “7-star” hotel, but there are plenty of ways you can catch a glimpse of the iconic sail-shaped landmark. For a close-up view, head to Sunset Beach – which as the name would suggest is perfect for those sunset views.

Alternatively, head to Souk Madinat Jumeirah, from where you can capture beautiful canal views with a Burj al Arab backdrop (the abra boats here run by Jumeirah Hotel are substantially more expensive though than Dubai Creek!)

Fill your senses at the Ripe Market

Enjoy the best of local produce and crafts at Dubai’s favourite pop up market event. A seasonal event it moves destination each year (though seems to have found its permanent home during the 2019-2020 winter season at Academy Park). The Academy Park event is held on every Friday during the winter, and in Umm Sequim on a Saturday.

The market is also held indoors at Times Square Centre every Saturday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Explore the world at Global Village

Take a trip around the world at this international showcase event. Held daily over the cooler winter months, Global Village Dubai is like a giant fair of food, entertainment and traditions from over 70 countries.

Entry is only 15 AED and you only pay for any additional activities or food once inside. Food tasters to free dance performances and showground rides, it is truly a global taster session and one of Dubai’s most buzzing evening destinations.

Get into Aquaventure Free

Yes, you read that right! It’s not well-advertised but by registering here, you can get into top rates Dubai water park Aquaventure at Atlantis the Palm for free on your birthday and in the immediate days before and afterwards (redeemable once per year). Other members of your party will need to pay (you’ll get a 20% discount for 2 friends), but a great saving if you have a celebrant in the family!

Enjoy art, fashion & fun at Alserkal Avenue

A modern fun and funky area of Dubai, Alserkal Avenue in Al Quoz is a treasure trove of art galleries, performing arts spaces and artisans working in one creative hub. Food, fashion and fun can be found amongst the warehouses with regular free exhibitions and cultural events happening throughout the year. Some shows and hands-on experiences cost extra.

Admire Al Qudra & the Love Lakes

The iconic “Love Lakes” are a man-made creation, an extension to Al Qudra Lakes in the desert area of Al Marmoon Desert Conservation Reserve, about 45 minutes outside of Dubai. Entry to the Love Lakes area is free, as is access to the Al Qudra bike track (extra to hire a bike from TrekBikes.ae to use on the track). There’s no public transport this far out of town though so you will need to have your own car.

Get on your wheels at Nad al Sheba Park

A popular spot for local fitness enthusiasts, the Nad Al Sheba Cycle Park has 4km, 6km and 8km bike paths to suit everyone from beginners to pros as well as a jogging track. Entry is free but if you’re only visiting you’ll need a rental bike at 50 AED.

Camping in the Dubai desert

If a desert safari in Dubai isn’t really your style, there are plenty of places in the Dubai desert where you can pull up your own patch of sand for the night totally free. Granted, you need to be travelling with the right sort of gear and have access to a 4×4, but this is one of the best free activities residents in Dubai can enjoy over the cooler winter months.

Day trip to Hatta

A day trip into the mountains to experience Hatta is not only a hugely rewarding contrast to the city (and often several degrees cooler than being on the coast), you can enjoy many of the sites for free.

The outdoor Hatta Heritage Village is completely free to enter, as is the Hatta Wadi Park and hiking the mountain trails.

Free movie under the stars

Dubai’s original outdoor cinema can be found on the rooftop of the Wafi Pyramids Complex every Sunday evening from 8.30 PM. There are giant bean bags to lounge around on for free to the public and popcorn & hotdogs available to purchase – seasonal.

View the world’s largest suspended aquarium tank

Inside Dubai Mall, you will find the megalithic 10 million litre Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo tank.  The viewing area in the centre of Dubai Mall stands at an impressive 51m wide and 20m high and is completely free to view from the outside.

Get your photograph with the Burj Khalifa

OK, we won’t lie, going up the world’s tallest tower Burj Khalifa is not cheap. But getting your selfie with the Burj is the next best thing right? It’s not easy to fit the whole tower in, but our favourite recommended spot is to head to Burj Park, on the other side of Burj Lake to the Dubai Mall.

Pre-fitted with pretty wings for those insta-moments, here’s your best chance to get the Burj Khalifa in the frame and admire this record-breaking building. (Note they don’t take too fondly to what they consider professional photography, save this experience for your smartphone).

You can also catch a glimpse on your way past of the stunning Dubai Opera House, and head all the way around Burj Lake for Burj Plaza, here you can find the free Downtown Slide! A giant 19m high attraction that older kids and adults will love!

Attended a horse race at Meydan Racecourse

Catch the excitement of racing season from October through to March each year with the Dubai Racing Club.  General Admission is free throughout most of the season (bar the  Dubai World Cup Finale end of March). A great fun way to enjoy the more glamorous side of Dubai without cost.

Watch a camel race

For one of the ultimate cultural experiences in Dubai, you cannot go past attending a camel race at Al Marmoom Camel Race Track. Free to enter and you may even capture a moment where the trainers are happy for you to get up close and personal with the camels. Tracking down the actual camel race timetable has always been notoriously hard but expect most of the action to happen early morning and be all over by 9:00 am.

There’s no denying that Dubai CAN be an expensive city to visit if you choose to enjoy all of the attractions and luxuries on offer. Located in the busy district of Dubai Marina, JBR is a beachfront community of hotel and residential apartment towers within walking distance of some of Dubai’s famous attractions.

Stretching across 1.7 km, you can easily spot the cluster of modern-looking sandy-hued buildings making up JBR – Dubai’s Golden Mile. The residents call it their favourite spot because of how self-contained it is for young couples and families, while the tourists keep returning back for easy access to world-class restaurants, sandy beaches, and vibrant nightlife.

Like many neighbourhoods in Dubai, JBR too comes with its own resident malls. Overlooking the Arabian Gulf (Persian Gulf), JBR The Beach is an open outdoor ‘mall’, and home to a cinema, well-known shopping brands, and restaurants – as well as the name might suggest a stunning beach. On the other hand, The Walk at JBR is a stretch of luxury boutiques, stores, and alfresco dining options along the entire length of JBR.

What’s there to do at JBR The Beach?

Looking for the perfect way to unwind after a busy week, then head to the sandy beaches of JBR The Beach overlooking the iconic Ain Dubai. There’s plenty to do at this open beach, whether you are thinking of relaxing with a book and working on your tan, or partaking in some extreme water sports.

The Sea Breeze offers you the option to book a cabana or sun loungers, complete with towels and umbrellas. You can even grab your buddy and go on thrilling water rides such as the Banana Boat ride and Donut ride. There’s also jet skiing, parasailing, and more for the thrill-seekers.

Get the family together and try to stay dry on AquaFun, an inflatable floating obstacle course set up in the middle of the sea in the shape of I Love Dubai.

The little ones can also have some fun in the sun with dedicated splash parks and park areas for them, there’s the Splash Pad children’s playground as well as the newly opened Splash n Party.

No matter what you are craving, JBR Beach caters to everyone’s appetite – in fact there are over 40 dining outlets just at The Beach! The eccentric range of menus means you will be tasting food from around the globe while enjoying stunning views of the beach, Bluewaters Island and Ain Dubai.

There’s Eggspectations for all-day breakfast options, flavoursome Indian at Bombay Bungalow, hearty Turkish for the meat lovers at Bosphorus, and even seafood classics at Aprons and Hammers. Even those with a sweet tooth will be spoilt for choice when choosing between waffles at Morelli’s Gelatos or the sweet buns at Papa Roti.

A unique experience to look out for is Flying Cup – sky-high drinks and dining at 40m in the air!

The Warehouse Gym located at The Beach in JBR comes with an outdoor setup consisting of a CrossFit rig, rope climbs, kettlebells, rowing machines, and jump boxes.

Make the most of the lovely Dubai winters and get your ‘fitspiration’ by training at this outdoor gym. You can book a one-off gym session with the on-site staff to assist you, or join one of the group classes, which include commando circuit classes, spinning and CrossFit. One-time classes start at AED 105.

A vibrant promenade lined with swaying palms on either side, buzzing with residents and tourists, The Walk at JBR is a popular destination for shopping, dining, and strolling. You will find here different homegrown boutiques and handicraft shops. Watch the place transform after sunset, and feel mesmerized by the jaw-dropping performances carried out by the street entertainers.

Here are four things you shouldn’t miss when exploring The Walk in Dubai:

1. Check out the funky street art

Grab your camera and go on a discovery trail for some seriously cool 3D Street art. See if you can spot a giraffe, a giant eagle, two rag dolls named Annie and Aisha, and a colourful explosion of galloping horses. These 3D optical illusions have been created by talented international and national artists, and will surely make you go ‘wow’.

2. Cycle along The Walk

While it’s fun to explore The Walk on foot, if you are restricted with time, you can choose to rent a bicycle. With automated bike hire stations dotted along the stretch, you choose to park and return your bike at any designated slots.

3. Dining Al Fresco

Similar to JBR The Beach, you will be spoilt for choices when it comes to dining options from around the globe. With the tables and chairs littering the pavements, you can enjoy Dubai’s beautiful weather by dining outside while overlooking the stunning sea. From noodle shops to charming cafes and healthy dining eateries, this place is lovely and reminiscent of the European al fresco dining scene.

4. Activities to keep you occupied

The Walk at JBR is always bustling with national and international skilled artists, entertaining you with their shows and talents. The events can change depending on the festival and season, but to give you an idea of some of the things you can expect are street performances, sand sculptures, and photography displays.

How to Get to JBR

JBR is easily accessible by car. If travelling from Dubai, take the Sheikh Zayed Road (E11) to Jebel Ali. Then take Garn Al Sabka Street (D59W) and continue to King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street (D94) until you find signs to JBR.

If travelling from Abu Dhabi, take the Ghweifat Highway (E11) towards Dubai. Then take Exit 29 to King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street (D94). Continue on until you see signs to JBR.

Parking for the public is limited along the JBR walk. However, there are hourly paid green parking zones and also some parking spots along JBR The Walk. If visiting JBR The Beach, you can avail yourself of three hours of free parking at the underground mall parking when you spend AED 100 or more at any participating outlet, Roxy Cinemas and/or Sea Breeze.

Valet parking service is also available for AED 55 (standard) and AED 110 (VIP) per day per vehicle.

If you are using the Dubai Metro, take the Red Line and step off at station 23, Dubai Marina Metro Station. From here you can cross over to the Dubai Tram and board the tram heading to Jumeirah Lakes Towers. You can get off the Dubai Tram at either Station 1 (Jumeirah Beach Residence 1) or Station 2 (Jumeirah Beach Residence 2).

If you are looking to take the RTA public bus, numbers 8 and 84 will take you directly to JBR.

Taxies in the area are plentiful, with several taxi zones along The Walk and in the Dubai Marina area.

Where to Stay in JBR

There is a fabulous array of accommodation options in and around JBR. Most offer apartment-style accommodation making it very popular with families looking for resort-style facilities but cooking amenities and separate bedrooms.

Not all hotels and resorts are technically part of JBR but to a visitor, they will all come across as the same area.

Best Resort on the Beach – Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort & Spa

OK, we’re technically cheating here, there are a few stunning, sprawling beach resorts that sit at the eastern end of JBR. Le Royal Meridien is one of these, sitting at the very start of The Walk, so we’re counting it!

With stunning landscaped gardens, a beachfront boardwalk, rooms boasting either Gulf or Marina views, a fitness centre and spa, three swimming pools, a kids club – even a crazy golf course! This is one of Dubai’s best beachfront offerings in an ultra-convenient location near Dubai’s top tourist attractions. If budget permits, book it (or next door Ritz-Carlton, you can’t go wrong)!

Best Hotel Apartment – Doubletree by Hilton

The upscale hotel is a suites-only property sitting at the opposite end of The Walk, closer to Bluewaters. Each suite at Doubletree features private balconies, marina or sea views, and a separate living room. Depending on suite size (1 to 3 bedrooms), some include a full kitchen and laundry facilities too.

Guests can enjoy a range of dining options, coffee, and poolside happy hours as well as private beach access with cabanas. The ocean-front infinity pool, Wellness Spa, and fitness centre are also drawcards for families and business visitors alike.

Best for singles & Couples – Rixos Premium Dubai

If you want to hang out in the life of the party, Rixos on the beachside of The Walk is your go-to.

The property hosts 11 bars and restaurants as well as Azure Beach, one of the trendiest beach clubs in Dubai, known for its glamorous pool parties. There are two family pools and a semi-Olympic-sized pool for adults, along with a great range of retail and dining opportunities.

Best for budget family travellers along JBR – Roda Amwaj Suites

There are many hotels and residences that sit inside JBR proper – that is, the big strip of sandy-coloured buildings opposite The Beach.

Roda Amwaj Suites consistently comes out as one of the cheapest every time we search. The rooms are basically on par anywhere you stay along JBR – the whole complex was built at the same time, so why is there such a differential in pricing? It can only be the brand name attached and extra services you may not need.

If you want a spacious longer-term stay with no thrills, just big, clean rooms and the convenience of being in the centre of The Walk, you’ll have no problems with Roda Amwaj Suites.

Best Budget Stay – Bombay Backpackers DXB

A hostel in Dubai? Yes! It’s not that common to find, but there are some good, reputable backpacker hostels to find in Dubai. Granted, it may not be as cheap as other parts of Asia, but from around AED 80 a night ($22 USD), this is as budget as you’ll get.

Bombay Backpackers DXB has a great reputation as it’s situated within JBR itself on the 18th floor, offering waterfront views in the heart of the action. Mixed dorms and single-sex dorms of 6 to 12 are offered with clean linens, a common room and a games room. No breakfast is included, but access to a fridge, kitchen facilities, washing machine, and swimming pools is in JBR.

Bluewaters Island

This island is an urban getaway with the most idyllic neighbourhood, licensed fine-dining concepts at the waterfront to quirky eateries, and ongoing events for the entire family. Home to Ain Dubai and some out-of-this-world towering canopy structures, Bluewaters Island can also be easily accessed from JBR via a pedestrian bridge, The Wharf Link.

Dubai Souks

Souk, or also spelled as souq, is an Arabic word which means ‘Market’. Traditionally seen in Arab countries, these noisy open-air outdoor markets are very different to other street markets you may have seen elsewhere.

Typically, the stall vendors line up on either side of narrow streets, in their square shops, clustered together depending on the type of goods being sold. At these endless maze of alleys, you will find yourself walking past vendors selling treasures such as fragrant teas and exotic spices from the over filled baskets, while other vendors enticing you to have a look at their fine silks and exotic tapestries.

The history of Dubai’s trading culture

Being a port city, Dubai has been part of the trading route for goods travelling between Africa and India for many centuries. Goods arriving varied from exotic spices, to hand-woven fabrics and organic produce, and made their way to the souks of Dubai.

One of the oldest souks in Dubai, is Deira’s souk originally established around 1850, one which continues to be popular even today due to its close proximity to the harbour on creek.

Dubai’s modern shopping culture

Dubai is a shopping haven for all, no matter your budget. If you look carefully, behind the many ultra-modern malls with international fashion brands and light studded sky scrapers, you will find traditional souks, dotted among bustling neighbourhoods, selling almost everything from precious stones to fragrant perfumes. It’s where you will get a range of items at affordable prices and cheap bargains, which can be lowered even more depending on your haggling skills.

The different traditional souks in Dubai

The souks in Dubai continue to be an important place for daily life and trade for many people. The city has many souks across the different neighbourhoods, some a few hundred years old, while others brand new with the aesthetics of a traditional souk. Here are the top traditional souks you must visit when in Dubai:

Deira Gold Souk

Dubai’s Deira Gold Souk is a shopper’s paradise when it comes to buying gold, other precious metals and gem stones. Home to over 300 gold shops, Deira Gold Souk has been a business hub for jewellers for decades, and showcases jewellery in a wide variety of designs and at unbeatable prices.

Deira Gold Souk boasts many gold outlets, and even some popular names such as Damas, Joyalukkas and Malabar Gold. The exquisite craftsmanship of jewellers and the stunning pieces of jewellery on display will leave you mesmerised, ensuring you will find something that suits your style and budget.

And just in case you are worried about whether the gold sold here is genuine, the Government of UAE regulates all products sold at the stores in the Gold Souk in Deira, guaranteeing authenticity and purity of gold. 

Location: Al Ras, Deira, next to Dubai Fish and Vegetable Market.

Timings: From 10:00 am to 10:00 pm. On Fridays the souk opens at 4:00 pm.

How to get there:

By Car: It is important to note that public parking can be difficult to find, specially during peak hours and weekends. Using public transport such as the Dubai Metro, RTA buses or taxi is recommended.

By Metro: Take the Green line to Al Ras Station, which is a 10 minute walk to Deira Gold Souk. Another nearby metro station is the Baniyas Square Station.

By Bus: Buses C07, C09 and C28 stop in the nearby area.

Dubai Textile Souk

The Dubai Textile Souk, sits on the banks of Bur Dubai, across the Dubai Creek.  It’s a place that will leave you dazzled with colourful textiles and beautiful prints everywhere you look. You will get here the finest silk, sari fabrics, cashmeres and even hand-woven fabrics.

Apart from the rolls of colourful fabrics, you will also find here traditional garments such as the abaya and kandura, and other accessories such as buttons, sequins and laces.

Location: Across Dubai Creek from the other traditional souks, in the Al Fahidi District.

Timings: From 10:00 am to 10:00 pm.

How to get there:

By car: RTA parking is available if you wish to travel by car, however parking spaces are limited and can be hard to find. Travelling by taxi is an easier option.

By Abra: The local Abra boats can cross the creek, by taking one to the Dubai Old Souk Marine Transport Station.

By Metro: Take the Green Line to the Al Ghubaiba or the Al Fahidi Metro Station. 

By Bus: Bus F70 will stop at the nearest bust stop.

Modern Souks in Dubai

In contrast, there are several souks in Dubai that are much newer, but been built in the traditional architectural style common to the region.

Souk Madinat Jumeirah

This indoor air-conditioned souk delivers everything you would expect from a traditional souk, but with an added touch of luxury. Similar to the old bazaars, the alleys are narrow and lined with shops selling everything from spices to ornate ceramic and exquisite fabrics.

There’s even more to explore from the outside, as you sip coffee overlooking the iconic Burj Al Arab, and catch an Abra ride along the palm-fringed waterways.

Location: Part of Madinat Jumeirah resort complex, Jumeriah

Timings: Daily from 10:00 am to 11:00 pm.

How to get there:

By car: Head towards Jumeirah. Take the King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street, in the Al Sufouh 1 district and follow signs to Souk Madinat Jumeirah. Underground parking is available for visitors. Alternatively, you can arrive by taking the taxi.

By Metro: The nearest Metro station would be Mall of Emirates. From here, it’s a 10 minute taxi ride to Souk Madinat Jumeirah.

By bus: Bus 8, 81, F55A or X28 stop a 10-minute walk away form Souk Madinat Jumeirah.

Souk Al Bahar

Souk Al Bahar translates to ‘Sailor’s Market’, and sits along the waters of Burj Lake in Downtown Dubai. It is a lively market place with all the charm of old Arabia, while providing residents and tourists a shopping and dining experience like no other.

Wander between the tall archways and ornate ceiling lanterns as you explore alleyways lined with shops selling intricate handicrafts, jewellery, Arabian fashion, art and so much more. And when you feel like you need to dine, find a good spot overlooking the magnificent Burj Khalifa and Dubai Fountains.

Location: Downtown Dubai, next to Dubai Mall.

Timings: Daily from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm.

How to get there:

By car: Souk Al Bahar is easily accessible by car with ample parking spaces. Parking is free for the first two hours, and upto 4 hours for restaurant guests when validated. You can arrive by taking the taxi too.

By metro: Take the red line to the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station, and then board the Feeder Bus to Souk Al Bahar.

By bus: Bus 27 runs between Deira Gold Souk and The Dubai Mall, from where you can to walk across The Dubai Mall to reach Souk Al Bahar.

Other Modern Souks in Dubai

Other contemporary souks include The Souk at Dubai Mall, Khan Murjan at Wafi Mall and Ripe Market that run at various different locations in Dubai.

Are you considering a flight via Dubai but not sure about connection times? Do you have the prospect of a long Dubai International Airport (DXB)) layover to contend with, or should you make it a full day’s stopover, get out of the airport, and explore Dubai?

In this post, we will cover several Dubai layover and stopover options, including:

Is it a stopover or a layover?  

There is some important terminology to understand when booking your flights, as it can make a BIG difference in ticketing and baggage. 

A layover is simply a break between flights. If you are on a continuous ticket with one airline/network, your checked luggage will go all the way through, and you’ll be issued tickets for both flights at the outset (or need to collect your second ticket at the transfer desk).

This can relieve some stress, but remember, if you gate check anything like a stroller, you won’t get it back to your end destination – a VERY important factor to think about if you’re planning to leave the airport (you can learn more here about whether you’ll need your stroller during a a stopover in Dubai)

On the other hand, a stopover involves two separate flights, usually through a hub city, where you change airlines. You may be able to get your bags ticketed all the way through, but the likely scenario is that you need to collect your bags and check in again.

This can work well if you want to stop overnight (or longer) and have access to all your clothing and gear, but it isn’t ideal when you have short turnaround times between flights.

Option 1- Staying Inside Dubai Airport

Our suggestion is that for anything under 5 hours, you are best staying within DXB airport to prevent the hassles of checking in and out through immigration and risk missing your flight. International flights require checking in a minimum of 2 hours beforehand.

Dubai City Stopover Tour Options

Unlike other large international airports, Dubai does not offer a free stopover city tour. There are plenty of paid tour options, though, depending on your time of day and budget. Just be mindful that you may not be able to start a city tour from DXB.

Take a Big Bus Tour: This is a great way to see a lot of the city in a short space of time. Depending on your available time, you may not be able to get off at all the stops. There are 3 routes and several ticket categories to choose from. Note that this does not leave directly from the airport, though. You’d need to get yourself to Deira City Center, which is a couple of stops on the Red Line Metro departing from Terminal 1/3 DXB.

Join a desert safari – only a short time in the evening? Let’s forget the concrete jungle and escape to the desert!  Most tours depart in the evening, so a wide selection is available for overnight stopovers.  If you are not staying at a hotel, it’s no problem to pop into one of the nearby hotels, such as Holiday Inn Dubai Airport, to use as a collection point.

There are also many tours that specialise in morning adventures to see the sunrise in the desert – perfect if you have one of those tricky overnight arrivals and you’re at a loss what to do.

Dubai Old & Modern City Tour – Join a guided tour through the city highlights, including cold refreshments, abra ride and vehicle to get you around all the highlights of town.

Getting Around Dubai – Self-Guided Dubai Stopover Tours

The two easiest options for visitors are using the Metro and hiring taxis or private cars. There are also Uber and Careem services available in Dubai (download the apps in advance if you want to use these options).

Some of the popular “stop, look and click” spots around Dubai include:

• The Burj Al Arab – Iconic “7-star” beachfront hotel on Sunset Beach Jumeirah
• Burj Khalifa – World’s tallest building – check out ticketing options here to visit the different observation decks & discover dining choices.
• Dubai Mall – One of the biggest in the world, packed full of restaurants, family entertainment, Aquarium, Ice Rink, Kidzania – you name it!  At night stop to see the free fountain and light show extravaganza
• Atlantis the Palm – the amazing luxury hotel on the man-made Palm Jumeirah
• Souk Madinat Jumeirah – Modern souk built in traditional style with many eateries and views back to Burj al Arab
• The Walk & The Beach – Trendy new area of Dubai JBR, lots of street art, cafes and activities always going on
• La Mer – even closer to the airport, this is a great fun waterfront venue, ideal for kids to stretch their legs, have a bounce or even a slide at Laguna, or simply enjoy Dubai’s modern and colourful beachfront vibes
• Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood – including the Dubai Museum, wonder the oldest streets of Dubai, through to the Al Seef Waterfront district where you can catch a traditional abra (boat) to Deira
• Gold & Spice Souks – taste a different side of Dubai, Deira is home to active trading souks and views of Dubai Creek
• Dubai Festival City – super close to the airport, a great little night spot to enjoy shopping and a bite to eat with its very own evening lights show spectacular, IMAGINE

Metered taxis are readily available at all hotels and tourist spots so you should have no problems organising your return back to the airport after sightseeing.

Or why not hire a private car and driver?  There are options with reputable ticketing agents such as Get Your Guide to book a car and driver that will pick you up from the airport then drive you directly to the highlights. 

Dubai Stopover Accommodation options

Before you go any further! Check if you are eligible for a free hotel flying with Emirates under Dubai Connect!

Dubai Airport used to be one of the central points of the city but as you can imagine in a city the size and scale of Dubai, the boundaries have grown.  The nearest areas to Dubai Airport are Bur Dubai and Deira. Downtown Dubai can be 15-25 minutes away depending on traffic and JBR/The Palm Jumeirah 40 minutes away. We recommend staying immediately adjacent to the airport for stops under 24 hours.

Dubai International Terminal Hotel is the only hotel actually inside the airport, Terminal 3.  Including full 5 star hotel facilities with restaurants, gym, spa, swimming pool this is your best luxury option without needing to actually leave the airport.  No family rooms available but you can add up to one extra bed / cot with charge.  Room rates start from 650 AED ($177 USD).

Nearest reasonable accommodation options next to but not in Dubai Airport

(NB you will need to clear customs and be eligible for a Visa on Arrival or Transit Visa to use these options)

Premier Inn Dubai International Airport – located adjacent to the airport you can catch their free shuttle. Facilities include double and family-sized rooms (sofa bed), a swimming pool, restaurants, a small supermarket nearby.  This is our preferred and most recommended option for families close by.  You can still go into town for some sightseeing but know you are staying near the airport for any early starts.  Expect rates from 200 AED ($55 USD), often cheaper if flying at off-peak times

Holiday Inn Express Dubai Airport – very clean, neat basic nearby accommodation with a free shuttle.  A promise of soundproof rooms, comfy beds, private bathroom and an on-site restaurant.  Prices from 150 AED ($41 USD), if time permits much more cost-effective and comfortable than using the sleep pods within the airport for a good stretch of sleep.

Le Meridien Dubai Hotel & Conference Centre–  For a more luxury but still very close to the airport this is our top pick.  There are multiple restaurants on-site, different room configurations, pool and extensive spa facilities if you’re seeking that perfect transit massage.  Note airport shuttle is charged but you can get a short taxi, minimum flagfall 12AED.  Prices start from 450 AED ($123 USD).

Dubai Connect – FREE transit hotel for Emirates passengers

As we mentioned above, SOME passengers with Emirates who have an unavoidable connection time between 10 to 24 hours are eligible for accommodation, meals and ground transportation courtesy of Emirates. 

You need to meet a few conditions, ie no better flight connection available and don’t get a say in which hotel – but if saving money and looking for convenience this could be your best option – check here where we talk you through exactly how it works.

Frequently asked questions for Dubai Stopover passengers

Transferring to Abu Dhabi from Dubai International Airport?

It is possible to do a stopover that involves flying into Dubai International (DXB) and out of Abu Dhabi (AUH) or vice versa. However, nothing is cheap and direct, so here are all your airport transfer options.

Free airline shuttles

Your Emirates or Etihad Airlines ticket will allow you to book through to your final destination in the UAE.

We give you a complete run-through of how the free airline buses work here, but summarised for you:

How to get from DXB to AUH

So, if you’re flying Emirates but ultimately want to end in Abu Dhabi, your ticket can include the free transit bus to your destination. The Emirates bus stop in Abu Dhabi is at their office on the Corniche (NB, this is nowhere near the airport!). You can see the schedule here.

Expect the taxi back to AUH from the Corniche to cost over 80 AED.

We’re unaware of any baggage service here, so if you want to do Abu Dhabi sightseeing before your next flight, your bags must come with you or return to AUH first to store your bags. You can organise a baggage transfer with Emirates for 200 AED, but by this point, you may as well have paid for a metered taxi.

How to get from AUH to DXB

And vice versa if you are flying with Etihad and leaving from Dubai, you can get the Etihad free shuttle service, leaving from Etihad Travel Mall, in Downtown Dubai.  Click here for the current schedule. 

Expect the taxi from DXB to the Etihad Travel Mall, which costs 40 AED.

Again, there is no baggage storage if you want to do daytime sightseeing. Other than at the nearby Dubai Mall, you can use their paid concierge service, which we believe is 70 AED/day.

The journey in either direction, Dubai to Abu Dhabi, takes about 1 hour and 25 minutes. For arrivals, you will likely be booked on a service at least 1 hour after your landing time. For departures, they will suggest catching the service listed at least 4 hours before your departure.

Unfortunately, neither works as a well-oiled machine and conveniently drops you at each other’s airport! If you are flying any other airline than Emirates and Etihad, you cannot get the free bus, and to get each other’s transfer services, you will still need connecting taxis or other transport.

Other Routes Between Dubai and Abu Dhabi

Other more direct (but more costly) options between the two airports are:

• Take a standard metered taxi airport to airport will cost approximately 200AED
• Get a private hire car with a driver. These will cost a minimum of 250AED for a small local vehicle to 350AED for a seven-seater. Some services might be able to provide you with car seats.
• It may be cheaper to hire a car, but the hassle and paperwork for a one-way trip and dealing with Dubai’s traffic after a long flight?  I’d only take this option if there are other stops outside of the big cities you want to make on the way.

The Intercity Bus service Dubai to Abu Dhabi is NOT direct for the airports, in fact, quite complex but we will include instructions!

• You would need to take get from the Dubai bus station at Al Ghubaiba in Bur Dubai to the bus station in Abu Dhabi at Al Wadha.  Intercity Bus costs 25AED per person.
• Dubai Airport to Al Ghubaiba bus station.  There is no bus station at DXB; there are only bus stops at each terminal.  From DXB Terminal 1 take bus 33 or 42; DXB Terminal 2, take bus 31. DXB Terminal 3 you can take the Metro to Burjuman, switch to the green line and get off at Al Ghubaiba Metro Station, then transfer to the bus station (You will need a pre-paid Nol card to take these services).  Or take a metered taxi.
• In Abu Dhabi, you will need to take a local bus service to connect to AUH.  For Abu Dhabi public transport, you will need a Halifat visitor card, prepaid only, no cash, and available at the station.
• From Al Wadha, you then need a local bus to Al Mushrif to catch the A1 bus to Terminal 1.  Or take a taxi, approximate cost 60AED. You can see a complete Abu Dhabi transport guide here.

When you add the inconvenience of needing pre-paid transport cards and numerous stops and transfers, it’s most definitely NOT the easiest option, especially if travelling with kids.  I’d save the public bus only for ultra-budget travellers.

A new alternative introduced in 2022 is the AUH Express Bus. If you can get yourself on the Metro all the way to Ibn Battuta, then this 24/7 shuttle bus journey will help you complete your journey to Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi for AED35 (or even cheaper if you book it online with GYG – check it out here!)

The general mall timings are weekdays (Sun-Wed) from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM and weekends (Thu-Sat) from 10:00 AM to 12 midnight.

They include a car charging station for those who drive a chargeable car and EZ taxis that whizz you around the mall to help you save time while shopping.

Additionally, the mall offers valet parking, a trolly valet service, and an NOL charging station where visitors can recharge their public transport and RTA parking cards. If you need to be connected while you are there, the Dubai Festival City Mall offers free Wi-Fi, and you can purchase a Festival City Mall Gift Card for your loved ones.

Finally, the Dubai Festival City Mall has six dedicated prayer rooms for men and women to ensure that visitors have the opportunity to pray in peace at any time of the day.

3. Prepare to dine.

To ensure that you are able to keep up with all the fun shopping and activities you will be doing, you need to make sure that you are taking time out to eat and drink. Luckily, Dubai Festival City Mall has plenty of options to ensure that your whole group is fed and hydrated.

First, the mall has a number of cafés and bakeries that you can enjoy at all times of the day. These include Be.k Dessert Cafe, Cafe Bateel, Caffè Nero, Costa Coffee, and Magnolia Bakery. Other speciality food options include Amorino, Baskin-Robbins, Dunkin’ Donuts, Godiva, and Haagen-Dazs.

For restaurants, you can select from a wide array of cuisines ranging from American to Italian, Chinese to Indian. Some favourite options include Origami, Al Fanar, California Pizza Kitchen, Hard Rock Cafe Dubai, PF Chang’s, and The Cheesecake Factory, amongst many others. And, if all those options weren’t enough, the mall also has a Food Court with quick dining options such as Bombay Chowpatty, Burger King, KFC, Pizza Hut and Papa John’s.

If there’s a mall that stands out best from all the other grand malls in Dubai, it is Souk Madinat Jumeirah offering an immersive cultural experience that’s so much more than just a marketplace.

Located in Jumeirah, Souk Madinat Jumeirah captures the traditional local Arabian townhouses with its earth-toned walls, wooden structured ceilings and ornate lanterns. And yet, this old goes on to meet the modern in the form of luxury fashion brands, internationally renowned restaurants and vibrant bars. It’s at this outdoor mall that you get glimpses of Dubai’s rich cultural heritage, present at every corner.

Add to it the palm-fringed waterways with Abra boats and mosaic-tiled fountains, while looking at the iconic Burj Al Arab in the distance, Souk Madinat Jumeirah is one destination that looks just as magical in the day, as at night.

1. Shopping

The name ‘souk’ translates to bazaar and this unique Arabian-inspired shopping destination is characteristic of traditional souks of the Arab world. It is easy for you to lose track of time in the labyrinth of shops selling Persian carpets, high-quality Arabic spices, Turkish pottery and Arabic Oudh. The place offers homegrown boutique brands, souvenir gift shops and luxury fashion.

Most of the shops are located on either side of the narrow alleyways, however, your need for retail therapy will also find yourself stopping at some of the outdoor stalls and pop-up shops for some interesting trinkets and finds.

If you haven’t experienced what shopping at the traditional bazaars feels like, Souk Madinat Jumeirah will surely be a worthwhile experience for you to remember, offering Arabic charm at every turn.

2. Dining – restaurants in Madinat Jumeirah

Souk Madinat Jumeirah houses some award-winning restaurants of International cuisines from different corners of the globe. Restaurants that not only serve authentic flavours, but seamlessly blend into the venue’s atmosphere. Whether you are looking for a romantic dining setting or just a casual catchup with friends over drinks, here’s a quick list of some of the well-known restaurants at Souk Madinat Jumeirah:

• Al Makan, serving authentic flavoured local dishes situated in the heart of Souk Madinat Jumeirah, gives you the opportunity to dine with a front-row view of Burj Al Arab.
• Pierchic is another restaurant offering stunning views, an ‘over the water’ dining experience and is a must for sea-food lovers.
• Famous for pizzas, tiramisu and chalet-style outdoor seating, Trattoria Toscana stands out for its Mediterranean flavours and vibe.
• Dine at Trader’s Vic with a live music band in the background playing some of the grooviest Latin American music.
• The ever so popular The Meat Co. is well known for its excellent steaks, live entertainment and atmosphere.

3. Take a boat ride – Souk Madinat Abra

One of the most recommended things and one to not be missed when visiting Souk Madinat Jumeirah is to take an Abra ride. These traditional looking Emirati boats go on to sail across the calm waterways, while you get to enjoy some exquisite views.

Don’t miss the opportunity to take Instagram worthy pictures against the backdrop of Burj Al Arab, learn interesting facts about the souk and the landmarks around.

Each Abra boat comfortably seats 10 people, but you can also book yourself an intimate Abra tour if seeking a picture-perfect view and an authentic Arabian experience. 

The Souk Abra Station is located near the Trattoria Toscana restaurant.

The Abra tour timings are:

• Winter: 10:00 am to 11:00 pm daily and Summer: 11:00 am to 11:00 pm daily

Each tour departs every 20 minutes and lasts for 20 minutes. 

The Abra Tour ticket prices are:

• Full Abra Tour- AED 100 per adult and AED 50 per child

• Burj View Abra Tour- AED 50 per adult and AED 50 per child

• Private Abra Tour- AED 850

No pre-bookings are required but during peak hours and in case of group bookings you need to reserve the tour in advance. PSST go really early on a weekday and you can book a group ride but almost certainly get it to yourself!!

4. Visit the Madinat Theatre

Located in the heart of Souk Madinat Jumeriah, the Madinat Theatre is a state-of-the-art venue bringing crowd-pleasing entertainment to life. Over the years, Madinat Theatres has been showcasing various performances from stand-up comedies, smash-hit Broadway musicals, Russian ballets, Christmas special skits and so much more, performed by some internationally known performers and production houses.

The beautifully draped theatre with its tiered seating has a 440 persons seating capacity. To book yourself a seat, you can either visit the Box Office or book it online at the theatre’s official website.

5. Experience the night life

As much as Souk Madinat Jumeirah looks breathtakingly stunning during the day, it magically transforms after dawn. Beautiful garden lights decorate the exterior part of the mall, while traditional ornate lanterns on the wooden ceilings light up the narrow shopping alleys. Burj Al Arab with its glimmering lights looks magical, and during Christmas time the gardens transform into a festive winter wonderland.

If you enjoy partying late into the night, there are many nightclubs and lounges offering a vibrant and energetic night scene you will not find elsewhere.

Every Wednesday, between 6pm and 11pm, the ladies can avail free drinks across a variety of restaurants and bars participating in ‘Ladies’ Night’.  Participating venues on the ‘Souk It Up’ map such as Belgian Beer Cafe, Trattoria, The Noodle House, McGettigan’s or Perry & Blackwelder’s, allow the ladies three drinks tokens, some of which are part of amazing dining deals.

6. Turtle Conservation

One of the last thing’s you’d expect to see in this urban jungle is marine turtles, and yet at The Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Project (DTRP) based at Burj Al Arab and Madinat Jumeirah is where rescue, rehabilitate and release back of native sea turtles into the wild takes place.

The Hawksbill turtle, native to Middleeast is listed as a critically endangered species and vulnerable to extinction. Since the beginning of 2004, these turtles have been brought in for conservation. The Turtle Rehabilitation Sanctuary at Jumeirah Al Naseem, close to Souk Madinat Jumeirah, allows the public to learn more about sea turtle biology, the rehabilitation and also allow turtle feeding.

Jumeirah Al Naseem’s Turtle Rehabilitation Lagoon is open to the public every day allowing you to get up close and personal with the cute turtles.  You also have the opportunity to join the feeding sessions scheduled at 11 am, every Wednesday for about 20 minutes. [On hold at present due to COVID]

Souk Madinat Jumeirah has facilities such as restrooms, baby changing rooms, free Wifi, prayer rooms and valet parking. The mall is also wheelchair accessible.

How to get to Souk Madinat Jumeirah

Located in the neighbourhood of Al Sufouh, and very close to Burj Al Arab, the Souk Madinat Jumeirah is an easily accessible mall, and very popular during the weekends.

If travelling by car, you need to head towards Jumeirah. Take the King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street, in the Al Sufouh 1 district and follow signs to Souk Madinat Jumeirah. (Paid) Underground parking is available for visitors as well as valet parking.

If taking the public RTA bus, hop on bus 8, 81, F55A or X28 which stop a 10-minute walk away form Souk Madinat Jumeirah.

Taking the Dubai Metro is also an option, however, the nearest Metro station would be the Mall of Emirates. From here, you would have to take a 10-minute taxi ride to Souk Madinat Jumeirah.

The shops at the Souk Madinat Jumeirah operate from 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM. The restaurants stay open from 8:00 AM and 02:00 AM.
