Dubai to Yas Island FREE Shuttle

When you book your tickets to any of the Yas Theme Parks, you can take advantage of the FREE Yas Express shuttle bus service from Dubai to Yas Island. This is by far the most convenient way to travel to Yas Island from Dubai at no additional cost.

You will need evidence of an e-ticket for any of the theme parks; the bus operates on a first-come, first-served basis.

There are now multiple designated starting points in Dubai (take note of the latest timetable here). Yas Express Route D includes buses that depart from:

• D1 Mercure Dubai Barsha Heights Hotel Suites & Apartments (leaves 9:30 AM, returns 9:25 PM)
• D2 Millennium Place Marina (leaves 9:30 AM, returns 9:40 PM)
• D3 Rixos Premium JBR, JA Ocean View Hotel, DoubleTree by Hilton Dubai – Jumeirah Beach (Leaves 9:20 AM, returns 10:00 PM
• D4 Millennium Plaza Downtown Hotel, The H Hotel Dubai, Sheraton Grand Hotel, Conrad Dubai Sheikh Zayed Road (leaves 9:20 AM, returns 10:30 PM)
• D5 V Hotel Dubai, Curio Collection by Hilton (leaves 9:30 AM, returns 9:50 PM)
• D5 Citymax Hotel Bur Dubai (leaves 9:30 AM, returns 10:30 PM)
• D7 Deira City Centre (beside Colors Cafe) (leaves 9:30 AM, returns 10:30 PM)
• D8 JA the Resort, JA Lake View Hotel (leaves 10:00 AM, returns 8:00 PM)
• D9 Al Seef Heritage Hotel, Canopy by Hilton Dubai Al Seef, Hampton by Hilton Dubai Al Seef (leaves 9:30 AM, returns 9:25 PM)

Timing is subject to traffic conditions. All buses stop at Yas WaterWorld/WB World Abu Dhabi first, then at SeaWorld, then at Ferrari World.

Free Yas Express Shuttle from the Northern Emirates to Yas Island

There is also a daily service operating from the Northern Emirates to assist guests on a day trip to Abu Dhabi. This service departs from different locations each day:

• Ras Al Khaimah on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
• Fujairah on Tuesday
• Sharjah on a Thursday
• Ajman on a Saturday and Sunday

Dubai to Yas Island Transfers

If the Yas Island Shuttle bus timings do not work for you, and you already have your theme park tickets, you may prefer to arrange your own transfers; this is undoubtedly the fastest way to get to Yas Island from Dubai and will maximise your time at the parks. These are options to consider:

• Private transfer to Yas Island theme parks from Dubai – Your most comfortable option with different classes of cars to chose from to fit your group and budget – offer via Klook

• Use Get Transfer – a service that allows users to put in their journey details, and drivers bid for your fare. You set the vehicle size you need and whether you’d like it to be one-way or a return transfer. A good way to get competitive pricing over the regular ride-share service that will set your price for you (Works sort of similarly to In Drive, which you may be familiar with; In Drive is not presently an option available in the UAE)

Dubai to Yas Island Taxi Fare

If you take a metered taxi from Dubai to Yas Island, you will likely pay the following, based on our experience:

• From Downtown Dubai 250 AED ($68 USD)
• From Dubai Airport 300 AED ($82 USD)
• From JBR/Dubai Marina area 200 AED ($54 USD)

Taxis from Dubai are allowed to cross into the Emirate of Abu Dhabi without issue. However, some taxi drivers may insist that you stop at the first ADNOC petrol station after the border and ask you to switch to a local Abu Dhabi taxi to complete the journey. They are most likely near the end of their shift and don’t want the extra hour + journey back!

Self-Drive Dubai to Yas Island

If you have access to a car or wish to rent a car and drive in Dubai, you can easily self-drive to Yas Island:

• From Dubai, take the E11 Highway (Sheikh Zayed Road)
• Stay left at Al Shahama for the E10, signposted to Abu Dhabi
• Take the Yas Island East Exit for the E12 (also marked ‘Yas Leisure Drive‘)
• Follow the blue signs that say ‘Yas Leisure Drive‘ until you reach the brown tourist signs. Follow each to your final destination – each theme park has its own free car parking.

Yas Island to Dubai Transport

Returning to Dubai from Yas Island, you can return the same free shuttle service with your ticket as evidence that you have been to the parks. 

If this does not fit your timings, however, you may need to take a metered taxi back to Dubai from Yas Island, or try a ride-share service such as Careem. They are available at all four venues and will take you door-to-door.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has introduced a six-month pilot service for shared taxis. The service allows passengers to travel between the Ibn Battuta transport hub in Dubai and Al Wahda Central Bus Station in Abu Dhabi.

This initiative is designed to provide a fast, convenient, and cost-effective transportation alternative for passengers seeking to travel between the UAE’s two major cities. Based on the pilot’s outcomes, the RTA may consider expanding this shared taxi service to additional locations in the future.

According to the RTA, Ibn Battuta and Al Wahda were chosen after an extensive assessment of potential routes that would benefit from shared services between the two emirates. This initiative aims to offer a more affordable travel option, especially for frequent commuters, as both locations are well-integrated with public transportation hubs and parking facilities.

An intercity bus route already operates between these two city hubs; however, it can be crowded at peak times and takes longer than a taxi journey.

The RTA anticipates that passengers could reduce travel costs by up to 75 per cent when four passengers share a single taxi. The proposed fixed journey cost under the pilot scheme is AED 264, therefore:

• 2 passengers sharing = AED 132 per person
• 3 passengers sharing = AED 88 per person
• 4 passengers sharing = AED 66 per person

The service also allows passengers to pay using bank cards or nol cards, making the payment process convenient. The RTA notes that this initiative is expected to reduce traffic congestion by promoting shared rides, lowering carbon emissions and curbing the demand for unlicensed transport services.

In addition, RTA taxis are equipped with safety features like cameras linked to the Operations Control Centre and systems to monitor driver performance, ensuring that passengers enjoy safe, smooth, and comfortable journeys.

Dubai to Abu Dhabi Bus

The Intercity Bus is the only public transport between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, rather than a metro or train line.

The Intercity Bus Service now operates three routes from Dubai to Abu Dhabi.

• Route 100 – Al Ghubaiba Bus Station (connects to Dubai Green Metro) in Bur Dubai to Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station [Every 20-35 minutes, approx 2.15-hour journey]
• Route 101 – Ibn Battuta Bus Station (connects to Red Line Metro) to Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station [every 20-30 minutes, approx 1.5-hour journey]
• Route 102 – Al Jafilya Bus Station (connects to Max Metro station, Red Line) to Mussafah Shabiya Bus Station, via Ibn Batutta and Zayed International Airport Terminal A [every hour, approx 2-hour journey]

All these routes also run in reverse from Abu Dhabi back to Dubai and cost 25 AED one-way.

The AUH Express runs on the hour, every hour from Ibn Battuta Station 24 hours a day.

Another less-publicised option for AUH airport passengers is to take the Intercity Bus 102 from Al Jafilya Bus Station or Ibn Battuta in Dubai. It’s a slightly slower journey than the express coach but now makes a stop at the new Terminal A Zayed International Airport and only costs 25 AED.

Will there ever be a direct train line between Dubai and Abu Dhabi?

We live in hope!

Etihad Rail looks promisingly close to opening. However, current plans look like the passenger service for Abu Dhabi will terminate on the city’s outskirts, meaning you’d still need a bus or taxi to complete your journey into Abu Dhabi city or airport.

Watch this space, though. There’s sure to be some time savings offered by this new rail service in the very near future.

Flying Etihad: Free Bus Dubai XNB to Abu Dhabi

If you have been visiting Dubai but ultimately need to fly out from Zayed International Airport (AUH) with Etihad, then you can use the Etihad free coach transfer service.

They are now back to a full service since COVID, offering 10 daily transfers from Dubai XNB to AUH.

This leaves from Etihad Travel Mall (Al Wasl Centre, Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Safa 2).  You can check the exact schedule here.

You must pre-book this service using your departure airport as XNB.

If you don’t pre-book, your seat is not guaranteed. You can still get a walk-in seat on the coach for 25 AED, if space is available.

Abu Dhabi From Dubai Tour Packages

One of the most convenient ways to get between the two cities is to join an organized tour group.

They will arrange your pick-ups from Dubai and transfer you in air-conditioned comfort to Abu Dhabi’s most significant tourist sites (more on these below!)

There are so many different Abu Dhabi tours to choose from, so here’s what we suggest you look out for when choosing the best tours for one day in Abu Dhabi:

• Is the tour private and personalised, a small group, or a large group?
• Will you be picked up from your hotel, or need to meet at an arranged rendezvous point in Dubai?
• Are meals included, or will you need to budget extra for a meal stop?
• Can you add any additional stops not in the itinerary?

Larger group Abu Dhabi sightseeing tours may be more budget-friendly but will also give you limited flexibility in what you want to see and do in this beautiful city.

We highly recommend you book your tours through a reputable tour provider such as Get Your Guide. The reason being they have vetted all their tour providers giving you a variety of itineraries to choose from all in one spot. • Half Day Grand Mosque tour transfers to and from the Sheikh Zayed Mosque only from Dubai. This is a shared tour bus leaving Dubai around 8:45 AM and only taking 5 hours; you’ll be back to Dubai by early afternoon. Perfect if you only want to see the country’s largest mosque.

• Abu Dhabi Full-Day Premium Sightseeing Tour – this is a great all-rounder tour for getting a taster of Abu Dhabi. You will, of course, see the mosque, but also a driving tour around the city’s other highlights, including the picturesque Corniche, Marina breakwater, Etihad Towers and a stop at Qasr al Watan, all with a guided tour in your chosen language. Note you’re given a lunch stop, but lunch is not included, excluded The Louvre.

• Full-Day Private Tour Dubai to Abu Dhabi is best for a small group who wants to travel with a guide. Your itinerary will see you to the Mosque, Emirates Palace and Yas Marina Circuit with a buffet lunch thrown in (but note, no Louvre or Qasr al Watan stops).

• Abu Dhabi Full-Day Trip with Louvre & Mosque – if you just want to see the Grand Mosque and the Louvre, this is the tour for you. You get two-hour stops at each stop, which will be plenty of time if these are the main highlights you are after. It can be run as a small group with other guests or as an Abu Dhabi private tour.

Unfortunately, few tours will take you on a more flexible itinerary that takes you more in-depth through the souks and older parts of the city (not that there are many left, like in Dubai!). Most Abu Dhabi city tours from Dubai stick only to the main tourist attractions.

What Are The Biggest Tourist Attractions to See in Abu Dhabi?

This will really depend on your interests, but undoubtedly the number one stop in Abu Dhabi is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque – sometimes simply referred to as the Grand Mosque (not to be mistaken for Jumeirah Mosque in Dubai).

There are tours that exclusively shuttle customers back and forward to the Grand Mosque, but you really need to see more in the city! (And be warned, the day-tripping buses from Dubai all seem to arrive en masse in Abu Dhabi, making it a very crowded experience by mid-morning).

Main cultural attractions in Abu Dhabi

In addition to the Grand Mosque, the next three most important tourist destinations in Abu Dhabi are:

• The Louvre Museum Abu Dhabi – a stunning Museum on Saadiyat Island that covers the “History of Humanity” in a superb waterfront setting is one of the best places to visit in Abu Dhabi after the Mosque. Just the building itself is a Middle East masterpiece. NB Closed Mondays.

• Qasr al Watan – the Presidential Palace of the United Arab Emirates is an incredible new building to rival the beauty of the Grand Mosque. Open for daily tours, it’s situated at the end of the Abu Dhabi Corniche (about the furthermost point from Dubai!). Can occasionally be closed at short notice for diplomatic visits.

• Qasr al Hosn – a brilliant insight into the history of the United Arab Emirates and Abu Dhabi from early Bedouin days and ancient history through to the discovery of oil, federation and the modern-day city – tours, special workshops and daily events are offered, but few tours seem to include this important stop on their pre-arranged itineraries.

Other sightseeing in Abu Dhabi

For general sightseeing, some popular attractions you might want to include:

• Step inside the stunning Emirates Palace Hotel. You can get some amazing snaps on the front steps or head inside to enjoy some local delicacies, from camel burgers to gold leaf tea, at one of Abu Dhabi’s most opulent buildings. A respectable dress code (knees covered) is required for men and women.

• Capture the city from above at Observation Deck at 300 – the city’s highest observation tower from Level 74 of Etihad Towers, (Conrad Etihad Towers). Not the city’s tallest building – that building does not have an observation floor – but nonetheless, Etihad Towers is a great place to get your bearings over the city and lovely for a morning or afternoon tea stop.

• Visit the Founders Memorial and walk along the Marina Breakwater for some fresh air and spectacular city views.

• Visit the National Aquarium Abu Dhabi and explore the new Al Qana Waterfront district.

• Take a trip out to the Falcon Hospital a great insight into local culture and a really worthwhile stop if you can join one of their twice-daily Falcon World Tours.

• Enjoy a unique walk through the wetlands of Abu Dhabi at Jubail Mangroves Park – it sits between Yas Island and Saadiyat Island, a superb nature stop you won’t believe is so near the city.

• Wahat al Karama – the war memorial that sits opposite the Grand Mosque. It is a poignant spot and a beautiful photo opportunity of both the memorial and the Mosque.

• Some tours may still include a stop at the Heritage Village – but in all honesty, we’d recommend Qasr al Hosn above as the better and more comprehensive stop for history buffs.

• Desert Safari’s in Abu Dhabi are just as popular as in Dubai, though you’ll get a pretty similar desert experience with camel rides, dune bashing and a traditional dinner, so just choose one of the other.

Yas Island Theme Parks & Grand Prix Circuit Abu Dhabi

For theme park fun, you really need to allow at least 4 to 6 hours to tackle even one of the mega theme parks on Yas Island – these are Yas Waterworld, Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi, Ferrari World and SeaWorld.

Technically, you could squeeze in a theme park alongside a day trip to the cultural sites, but we highly recommend you make a full day for each experience so you are not rushed. There’s really no time to fully enjoy a water park or rollercoaster day if you’re being rushed back on a bus.

Yas Island is also home to the famous Yas Marina Grand Prix track. You may not get time on a day tour to do much more than snap some photos, but motorsports fans should put aside extra time on a day trip to Abu Dhabi to take part in either a behind-the-scenes guided tour of the track or, even better a circuit driving experience.

For something truly unique, on a Monday and Wednesday night from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM, you can walk, run or cycle the Yas Marina Grand Prix track! Join in with local residents to enjoy this truly unique track experience – completely FREE! See the timetable and any planned track closures here.

Transfers from Dubai to Abu Dhabi

If you are seeking to self-tour in Abu Dhabi, all you will need to arrange is get yourself by public or private transport to Abu Dhabi or arrange a hire car.

By road, the journey from Dubai to Abu Dhabi takes between 1 and 2 hours, depending on your mode of transport and exact location. The cities are about 160 km apart.

This really detailed guide sets out all of your transport options getting between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Note that the 100 and 101 Intercity Buses will take you to the central bus station in Abu Dhabi, Al Wadha; all the tourist attractions we have set out here are quite spread out over the city, so you will then need to take local bus services (and get yourself a Hafilat card) or several taxis to jump between the various sightseeing destinations.

Another new option for visiting only the Louvre and Qasr al Watan is the Cultural Express. This bus service leaves from Sheraton, Mall of the Emirates, at 9:00 AM and takes passengers to these two Abu Dhabi cultural attractions before shuttling guests back to Dubai, arriving around 8:00 PM.

Taxi from Dubai to Abu Dhabi

If budget permits, you can simply take a standard Dubai Hala taxi from off the street in Dubai, or book one on the Careem App to your location

Depending on your pick-up and drop-off points, this should cost you around 300 AED from Downtown Dubai to Abu Dhabi Airport. 

From Dubai Airport to the Abu Dhabi Corniche area, you are looking at more like 400 AED. All taxes run on a meter and are a reliable form of transportation in the UAE.

Hiring your own car from Dubai to Abu Dhabi

Hiring your own car will grant you the most flexibility but may not be the cheapest for only 1 day.

You will also need to drive on Dubai’s freeways which can be challenging at times with the fast and heavy flow of traffic!

With the (very) high-speed limits on the E11 Freeway, it is a quick drive from Dubai to Abu Dhabi. Most tourist locations, other than in the city centre of Abu Dhabi, have free visitor parking (otherwise, you’ll need a few dirhams in change for meters or use a parking app).

Hiring a private driver for an Abu Dhabi day tour from Dubai

If you are not interested in a private tour but want someone to drive you from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, you can use ride-sharing apps such as Uber or Careem or try these driver options:

• Private driver from Dubai to Abu Dhabi – the best choice if you’re after a reliable driver service one way to Abu Dhabi (NB this is just a point-to-point driver, they won’t take you around all the tourist sites)

• Get Transfer – is a great app to plan your daily driver needs. You can ask drivers to “bid” on your journey cost and choose the driver that fits your needs best in terms of vehicle, pricing and availability.

• Welcome Pickups – a good site for sourcing reliable, English-speaking driver services to and from Dubai

Staying overnight in Abu Dhabi – Hotel Recommendations

If time permits, an overnight stay in Abu Dhabi is essential to fit everything we have mentioned here – a day tour to Abu Dhabi will barely scratch the surface

• If you are visiting the theme parks on Yas Island, then the Yas Plaza Hotels should be your top pick – there are several to choose from; our favourite for a unique experience is staying in the W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island, which straddles the Yas Marina GP race track.

• Alternatively, try two newly opened hotels – The WB Abu Dhabi (Warner Bros. themed hotel) is perfectly located for accessing WB World and Yas Waterworld, whilst the Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island is the top choice for the happening new area of Yas Bay if you want to be surrounded by restaurants and nightlife.

• If your main focus is seeing the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, there are several hotels in an area known as Bab Al Bahr – just on the mainland before you cross to Abu Dhabi island. Why not try the Fairmont Bab al Bahr, or the Shangri-La Hoel Qaryat Al Beri.
• A great budget alternative (still 4-star!) is Traders Hotel Qaryat Al Beri. These are all glorious spots to watch the sunset behind the Grand Mosque to the west. There are lots of dining choices in the Souk at Qaryat Al Beri or take a traditional abra (paid) across the Grand Canal to the Venetian Village at the Ritz Carlton for a great range of restaurants and buzzing nightlife.

• If you’d like to mix in some resort sunshine with your stay, Saadiyat Island, adjacent to where you will find the Louvre Abu Dhabi, is our top pick. Here there is a string of 5 luxury resorts to choose from along Saadiyat Beach. They don’t come cheap but are simply stunning (and maybe just a few dirhams cheaper than their Dubai counterparts – worth checking!)

• On a budget? There are plenty of inner-city hotels in Abu Dhabi offered with reputable brand names attached that you can comfortably get a room for two under 300 AED per night. You can try Al Maha Arjaan by Rotana, Ramada Abu Dhabi Corniche or Southern Sun Abu Dhabi.

The Grand Mosque has re-opened post-COVID, and border crossing restrictions between the Emirates have been abolished. As of 7 November 2022, you no longer require any sort of PCR testing, nor evidence of vaccination against COVID-19 in order to enter public spaces in Abu Dhabi emirate.

Things To Know About The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Before diving into the details of how to get there, let’s look at just a few fabulous facts about the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (and why it is absolutely worth the day trip from Dubai!)

• The Grand Mosque is named after the country’s founding father, the Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan “May Allah rest his soul in peace”.
• The Mosque is an active house of worship, capable of housing 41,000 worshippers at capacity – 10,000 inside and 31,000 in the external courtyards.
• The building of the Mosque was completed in 2007 with the craftsmanship of 38 contractors and thousands of workers from around the world.
• It holds several “largest in the world” claims to fame – including the largest hand-woven carpet at 5,627 sqm and the largest marble mosaic floor in its 17,000 sqm courtyard.
• HH Sheikh Zayed is laid to rest in a mausoleum on the Mosque grounds. Two Imans read the Quran here 24 hours a day.

How To Get To The Grand Mosque From Dubai

There are limited public transport options between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, as we discuss here, so our best-recommended method of getting from Dubai to Abu Dhabi to see the Grand Mosque are:

1. Take A Taxi – approximately 1.5 hours, depending on where you set out from; expect to pay around AED 300-350 one-way for a metered taxi.
2. Join A Tour Group – 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the departure point and how many pickups they make. A tour guide, meals, and multiple tourist stops are likely to be thrown in, so the price is very variable per person – more below!
3. Hire a Private Driver – taking approximately 1.5 hours; this is the best choice if you prefer door-to-door service and like the personal touch – ideal if you are a family or small group looking to split the cost. You can try a service such as GetTransfer to have private drivers bid on your journey and get a competitive price.
4. Self Drive – 1 to 1.5 hours – If you are a confident driver, pick up a hire car in Dubai and take the E11 all the way to Abu Dhabi.
5. Take a public bus – 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on your starting point; more below!

Public Transport Dubai to Abu Dhabi to see the Grand Mosque

There are two different Intercity bus routes that you can take from Dubai to central Abu Dhabi, each costing AED 25 one way.

• The first bus leaves from Al Ghubaiba Bus Station (Route 100) approx every 20-35 minutes and terminates at Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station (Al Wadha Mall)
• The second leaves from Ibn Battuta Mall (Route 101) approx every 20-35 minutes and also terminates at Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station.

From Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station, you then need to catch a local Abu Dhabi bus service 94 to the Grand Mosque.

Note you can use your Nol card to get to Abu Dhabi on the InterCity bus, but from the Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station to the Grand Mosque, you need a Hafilat card to use local public transport in the capital.

• Once you’re in Abu Dhabi, tourists can also avail the FREE Visit Abu Dhabi shuttle buses. They are not super frequent, but if you’re travelling on a budget, these can be a great way to get about in Abu Dhabi. Look for Route B2 (stops near Al Wadha Mall) to take you to the Grand Mosque.

Organised Tours From Dubai to Abu Dhabi

You can join a larger tour group and simply use this as a form of transportation or hire a personal guide and driver.

This can certainly take the stress out of self-driving, but do note a lot of the tour buses from Dubai arrive “en masse”. If you want crowd-free photos, self-driving, taxi or private Abu Dhabi tours are the better way to go.

Do I need to be Muslim to visit?

Not at all. The Grand Mosque is open to everyone as long as they treat it in a respectful way (including conservative dress).

There are certain areas of active worship and Friday mornings when visits are limited to worshippers only.

Otherwise, you can attend the Grand Mosque any time during opening hours.

What should I wear to the Grand Mosque?

It is always advisable as a tourist in Abu Dhabi to dress conservatively. The Abu Dhabi Grand Mosque – and in fact, any religious or Government building in the UAE – has a much higher dress standard than, say, a Mall or public promenades.

For women, you must have arms and legs completely covered and your head. The only skin that can show is your hands, feet, and face.  If you are not adequately dressed (don’t worry, this applies to most tourists), you will be sent to purchase an abaya or Shayla in the adjoining boutiques as you enter the mosque. These are around AED 40 – 80 for something cheap.

This is all part of the experience, so embrace it! But please don’t think this means you should wear the skimpiest outfit underneath!

For men, they should be in long trousers and sleeves. If they have shorts on, they will also be asked to purchase something more suitable before entering.

Please note! since COVID the ability to hire appropriate clothing for free to enter the Grand Mosque has been suspended and doesn’t look like it will return. If you turn up with in appropriate clothing, you will be redirected by security staff to a small strip of shopping boutiques to buy the right attire. They are relatively inexpensive, but you may want to BYO from Dubai if you’re hitting the souks, consider it a souvenir of your time in the UAE!

Note, part of the tour involves you taking off your shoes to walk through the Mosque itself; consider nice socks too, or having your toenails painted for this!! And remember where you left your shoes!!!

Do I need to pay to go into the Grand Mosque?

It’s absolutely free.  The Mosque is for the people; as such, no charge is levied on worshippers or visitors. Even cultural tours are provided for free.

However, they will issue you an entry ticket where you need to give some personal details. This can be done online in advance here to save time.

Do I need to book a tour of the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi?

If you come with a tour guide, they may include a personal tour guide within the price you paid.

Otherwise, the best alternative option to make sure you get the best out of your Grand Mosque visit is to get involved with one of the FREE mosque cultural tours.

These are held throughout the day with no need to pre-book.

Opening times for the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

• Saturday through Thursday, 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM
• Friday 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM & 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM

Tours are conducted in English and Arabic and last around 45 minutes, with an opportunity to ask further questions at the end. It is not customary to tip for this tour.

Day 1 – 7 Day Dubai Itinerary: Relax Into Dubai

Relax, unwind and get to know one of Dubai’s modern beachfront districts.

Whether you are staying in one of Dubai’s luxury beachfront hotels or not, with 7 days, there’s no need to rush into sightseeing day 1. Many hotels include their own amazing resort facilities, or head out to explore one of these beachfront areas on foot:

JBR, Bluewaters, Dubai Marina

A lot of first-timers find the area of JBR and Dubai Marina a great place to start. Familiarise yourself with The Walk & The Beach – catch those rays and shake off the jet lag.

If you’d like to stretch your legs further, take a walk over to the ultra-modern man-made island, Bluewaters Island, to dine and marvel at the Dubai skyline along Jumeirah Beach and perhaps add in a flight on Ain Dubai, the largest observation wheel in the world for spectacular city views [NB still “temporarily” closed in 2024].

You can easily spend a whole day in the JBR area between activities along the beach (inflatable water parks, splash pads, jet ski and flyboarding, Flying Cup sky-high dining – read more here!) and onward for dinner in the Dubai Marina area or catch a dinner cruise.

Getting there: Jumeirah Beach Residence/Dubai Marina is the perfect place to stay for one week due to the high number of spacious hotel apartments, or by Metro take Red Line to DAMAC Properties or DMCC Metro Station

La Mer (Now Closed: To be replaced by J1 Beach later in 2024)

Another ultra-modern beachfront area of the city to consider for easing into your first day in Dubai is La Mer. An eclectic mix of palm-tree-lined walkways, retail, dining & play opportunities. There’s even a mini water park here. As pretty at night as it is by day La Mer is a trendy new addition for families and singles alike to enjoy Dubai’s modern vibes.

If you don’t want to spend the whole day simply at the beach, La Mer sees you close to both the Jumeirah Mosque – the largest mosque in Dubai open to the public for daily tours – and Etihad Museum, telling the story of the country’s unification in 1971.

Getting there: No direct Metro stop (nearest is Financial Centre then a 10-minute taxi), or take bus 8, 9 or 88 along Jumeirah Beach Road

Day 2 – 7 Day Dubai Itinerary: Old Meets New

Step back into the Dubai of the past, from Bedouin roots to bustling Dubai Creek.

Your first day of real sightseeing needs to go back to the grassroots of what Dubai city is about; a busy trading port city based around Dubai Creek.

Get your bearings at Dubai Frame

Let’s start your exploration of Dubai by taking in the views from the Dubai Frame. Pretty much what it says – it’s a giant picture frame! One of the first tourist highlights you will capture coming from Dubai International Airport into the city.

You ascend up one side of the 150m high frame (48 floors) and then walk across the top. The see-through floored sky deck gives you fabulous views of Old Dubai, Dubai Creek to Sharjah and beyond in one direction, and the modern skyscrapers of Downtown Dubai in the other.

Getting there: Nearest Metro is Al Jafiliya for Zabeel Park but it’s a decent walk, you may prefer a taxi/Uber drop off

Wander Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood

This is the oldest part of Dubai city, a labyrinth of narrow laneways that date back to the 19th century. The area of Bur Dubai is protected so that the city’s heritage does not become lost forever under the sprawling skyscrapers. Most of the traditional sandy-coloured low-rise buildings are now galleries, museums and small cafes.

Within this area, you will find the Dubai Museum, housed within the Al Faihi Fort, which dates back to 1787. At only 3 AED, you should definitely pop your head in for more insight into the country’s Bedouin past and the pre-oil era of Dubai. {CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS SINCE 2020 – NO INDICATION OF REOPEN DATE YET}

There are many other Dubai museums to be discovered within the laneways; the Coffee Museum (entry fee 10 AED) is one of our favourites worth seeking out.

Getting there: Al Fahidi Bus Station or Al Fahidi Metro station

Lunch at Al Seef Waterfront

By now, you have most certainly worked up an appetite, so if you’ve not stopped for lunch in XVA Cafe or Arabian Tea House situated within Al Faihidi Historical Neighbourhood, now would be time to head to one of many restaurants in this waterfront development. Seamlessly blending old with new it’s directly across the street, next to the Al Faihidi Marine Transport Station.

Al Seef is set up like a traditional souk, so you’ll be able to do your shopping here too. Kids may enjoy popping into the Museum of Illusions or having some fun with photos in the utterly instagrammable laneways.

Cross Dubai Creek on an Abra

An absolute must for an authentic old Dubai experience! Whilst there are far more modern methods these days of crossing the city, a traditional abra from Bur Dubai to Deira at 1 AED per person is still a steal!

Scale the Burj Khalifa

It would be hard to set out a Dubai itinerary and not include THE most iconic building in the city – the world’s tallest building in the world, no less! Yes, you can travel to the observation deck of the building on the 124th and 125h floors (extra packages take you to the 148th floor!), or even dine at At.mosphere restaurant and lounge on Level 122.

If there’s one part of your Dubai itinerary you simply must book in advance; it’s the Burj Khalifa. Tickets at the door are extortionately more expensive and can sell out. Do allow a good 2 hours for queuing and having a good look around. Note sunset and sunrise slots (weekends only) cost more.

Souk Al Bahar

Another spot to explore nearby is Souk Al Bahar. Accessed over a pedestrian bridge from Dubai Mall, this modern market is made in the design of a traditional souk offering handicrafts through to fine dining and spectacular views over Burj Lake.

Evening in Downtown Dubai

There are several ways to continue enjoying Downtown Dubai well into the evening, its the hub of Dubai nightlife alongside JBR/Dubai Marina.

The Dubai Fountain show is one of the most popular free things to do in Dubai. Starting from 6:00 PM nightly, then every half hour, watch the fabulously choreographed light and sound show on Burj Lake, sitting at the foot of Burj Khalifa. Later in the evening, the Burj Khalifa also lights up for half-hourly shows.

For a close-up view of the fountain show, you can take an abra ride on the lake. Alternatively, our favourite is to pick out one of the restaurants with uninterrupted views in either Dubai Mall or Souk Al Bahar and dine whilst getting to see the show a few times over without the crowds.

If your trip happens to align with something you enjoy at Dubai Opera, this is another sensational Downtown Dubai experience to get glammed up for.

If concrete and modern Dubai is really not you, then head to the listing below of the best cultural activities to continue on a few more activities we couldn’t squeeze in Day 2. A day trip to the Heart of Sharjah may be preferable.

Shopping alternative

If it’s getting hot out or you’d prefer a little retail therapy, spend the morning at Souk Madinat Jumeirah. Similar to Souk Al Bahar in Downtown, this is a modern souk (market) built in traditional style, with indoor and outdoor (seasonal) stalls and shops offering tourist tat to genuine souvenirs and a superb range of eateries.

Again, you can get some brilliant Burj Al Arab views here and even take an abra out on the waterways around the extravagant Jumeirah hotels (a bit more pricey than the 1 AED on Dubai Creek but an amazing backdrop!).

Getting there: Souk Madinat Jumeirah is not on the Metro, but you can get to the Mall of the Emirates and a short taxi from there, or stop at Internet City and then hop on Bus 88.

Day 5 – 7 Day Dubai Itinerary: Abu Dhabi Day Trip

No trip to the UAE is complete without seeing the Capital, Abu Dhabi.

The most iconic of buildings to visit in Abu Dhabi is the simply stunning Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

Whilst it is possible to squeeze in a trip to the Grand Mosque only on a half-day trip to Abu Dhabi – it’s less than 90 minutes on a tour coach Dubai to Abu Dhabi – you’d be doing yourself an injustice not to see more of the city.

Getting there: If you want to move at your own pace, then definitely hire a car for your Abu Dhabi day trip, but catching a tour is the easiest option – the big price differential is whether you join a shared tourist coach or take a private tour

Day 6 – 7 Day Dubai Itinerary: Dubai Theme Park Day!

Thrill-seekers and adrenaline junkies will never be left disappointed in Dubai.

Now if you have littles travelling with you (or big kids at heart!), you may well need to move theme park day further up the itinerary or dedicate two full days.

There’s a superb selection of world-class theme parks to choose from in Dubai. If you’re visiting in the beautiful shoulder seasons (approximately March to May and October to November), our top pick would be one of the mega water parks – choose from Atlantis Aquaventure or Wild Wadi at Jumeirah.

(NB, if you stay at Atlantis the Palm or any of the Jumeirah hotels, your water park entry will be included!)

Day 7 – 7 Day Dubai Itinerary: Splurge on something unique

On your last day, it’s time to tick off anything you’re yet to see and do from our ideas above and engage in something uniquely Dubai.

Some top suggestions for “only in Dubai” experiences include:

• Enjoy a sunrise balloon ride over the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve
• Try afternoon tea at the “7-star” Burj Al Arab
• Skydive over Palm Jumeirah
• Zipline across Dubai Marina
• Helicopter journey over the city
• Dine in the world’s highest restaurant

If you’ve not had the opportunity yet, find one of Dubai’s dramatic rooftop bars (seasonal) to finish off your incredible week in Dubai with dramatic views over the city skyline or the Arabian Gulf.

As we discussed in this article, there is no Metro between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.  If you are seeking a public transport option between the UAE’s two largest cities, then you need the Intercity Bus from Dubai to Abu Dhabi. This is by far the cheapest option, although not the quickest!

What should I expect on board the Dubai to Abu Dhabi Bus?

These public buses are pretty luxurious in the scheme of things. They are air-conditioned, have information screens, priority seating for women, children, and the disabled, and priority boarding lines.

Do be prepared to turn up early for your chosen service as queues can start forming, and once the bus is full, doors need to close, and you’ll wait for the next scheduled service.

What does the bus from Abu Dhabi to Dubai cost?

All bus fares are 25 AED one way.  Customers can use a NOL card or pay cash at the bus station in Al Wadha.

There is no pre-booking, you turn up on the day and pay as you board.

Paid AUH Shuttle

An Abu Dhabi Airport shuttle service – AUH Express – was launched in September 2022 for passengers travelling between AUH Zayed International Airport and Dubai. Again, it’s not an airport-to-airport service but will get passengers from Ibn Battuta directly to AUH.

It costs 35 AED, one way to buy at the bus counter or from the ticket machine (Stand 11 at Ibn Battuta) – learn more about this Abu Dhabi to Dubai service here.

Check availability for the AUH Express here – NB if you miss the booked time, there’s no problem catching the next scheduled service.

NB – at the time of last updating this guide, AUH Express seems to have removed the ability to buy online in advance

Travel during COVID-19 times is never straightforward, even within countries. With the health and safety of residents and tourists front of mind, the situation for freely moving around the 7 Emirates of the UAE remains dynamic.

Border crossing point between Dubai and Abu Dhabi

In the ever-changing post-COVID world, there have been several periods of time where a police border crossing checkpoint was placed between Dubai and Abu Dhabi emirates. Since July 2020, each Emirate has pursued a slightly different approach to reopening international borders and ongoing testing requirements to conquer the spread of COVID-19.

We’re delighted to announce that free movement is again permitted domestically in the UAE without any border checkpoint or testing requirements from 28 FEBRUARY 2022. (Swipe left for English)

Please note that whilst you can now cross the domestic border without going through a police checkpoint, there are still slightly different COVID rules in Abu Dhabi. Primarily, a “Green Alhosn” is required for entry into public buildings and spaces.

7 NOVEMBER 2022: Almost all COVID restrictions for Abu Dhabi emirate have now been abolished, including the need to wear a face mask and Green Pass on Al Hosn – read the latest update for Abu Dhabi visitors here.

This border-crossing guide was first published in July 2020 and has undergone many iterations. Whilst border crossings have long been removed, we have left this article for prosperity and reference.

Dubai to Abu Dhabi border crossing rules prior to February 2022

Once an incredibly simple process to cross from Dubai into neighbouring emirate Abu Dhabi, the world changed for the Emirates on 22 June 2020 when precautionary health measures saw Abu Dhabi shut off its domestic border with Dubai.

The restrictions have eased, however, a border checkpoint remains in place restricting movement into Abu Dhabi emirate. 

All drivers and passengers of private vehicles over the age of 12 must present a negative COVID-19 test result – DPI or PCR – in order to cross from the emirate of Dubai into the emirate of Abu Dhabi, plus undergo subsequent nasal PCR testing if they remain in Abu Dhabi [this step now abolished].

Border testing travelling from Dubai into Abu Dhabi

Here’s what you need to know before crossing from Dubai into Abu Dhabi.

The difference between a PCR and a DPI Coronavirus test

There are two different types of coronavirus testing that are currently accepted for passing the border between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

In order to cross the police checkpoint that has been set up across the highway, you will need to provide evidence (an SMS screenshot of your test result will suffice) that you are COVID-19 negative. This can be from a PCR or DPI test result.

A PCR is a Polymerase Chain Reaction test – in the UAE conducted via a nasal swab test that takes, on average 24 hours for the results to be returned, though this can vary. You should plan a PCR test at least 24 hours in advance of when you wish to cross from Dubai into Abu Dhabi.

A laser-based DPI test (Diffractive Phase Interferometry) is a pin-prick test on your finger that picks up signals of infection and allows for quicker mass-testing, the result is almost instant.

At present, you are allowed to take either of these two tests in any part of the UAE. From 19 July 2021, you have 48 hours to cross into Abu Dhabi with a negative PCR result or 24 hours from receiving a DPI result. You cannot use the DPI method on consecutive crossings.

You will need to present a photo ID – be it your Emirates ID card (EID) or a passport with your test result, with your name in Arabic or English.

Rapid testing centre at Ghantoot [abolished]

Just over the border on the E11 Freeway that connects the two cities, you will come to the area of Ghantoot. If you are NOT already in possession of a negative test result, pull off the freeway here, it will be very clearly signposted.

There are now separate places to go for:

1. Overseas visitors/returning residents with a valid PCR result who need fitting with a tracker (more on this below) and
2. UAE residents looking to undertake rapid DPI test, per conditions below

NB – The Al Faya Road facility is a new drive-through testing station open 24/7, the large tent to the right is no longer offering DPI testing, it only deals with international arrivals.

You will need an Emirates ID card (EID) and will need to contactless pay 50 AED per person (testing only applies to those in your vehicle aged 12 and over). You no longer need to book in advance.

Because of the need for an EID as part of the testing process, instant DPI testing is NOT available to non-UAE residents.  They may use a PCR result instead, but be mindful if you’ve come from overseas the result can be no more than 48 hours old.

New overseas arrivals into Abu Dhabi are also subject to strict self-quarantine measures, more below.

You should have the Al Hosn app installed on your phone.  The two staff testing you (one entering your details and one actually doing the prick test) will ask you to confirm your mobile number. You will be instantly sent a result which indicators either “no swab” or “swab”.

“No swab”= keep driving, you’ve tested negative. Keep your phone handy as it’s only a few kilometres back on the E11 or E311 Highway until you hit the police checkpoint and will need to show this result.

“Swab” = If a follow-up swab is required, they will do this on the spot (a PCR test) in the testing tent. 

We have heard varying stories on whether you are then allowed to cross the border and self-quarantine while you wait for the result.  It appears some leniency being shown with families who live in Abu Dhabi and can prove their residency, otherwise expect to be turned back to Dubai until a PCR confirms whether you are actually positive or not – a PCR is far more accurate than a DPI test which may pick up other infections.

NB there are several border crossings into Abu Dhabi from Dubai by road.  The only border where a DPI testing tent can be found is just off the E11 on Al-Faya Road.

The E11 Highway from Dubai to Abu Dhabi has now been widened at the border checkpoint with many more lanes to speed up the border crossing process; it includes automatic number plate reading.

To add one more layer of complication, if someone is borrowing your vehicle (even if it’s your spouse who ordinarily drives the vehicle), be warned the police system may assume it is you, the owner that has crossed the border. You may receive the day 4/8 warning by text or a flat out fine for not re-testing even if you yourself never crossed the border!

Testing in advance of border crossing into Abu Dhabi

If you are unable to get a rapid DPI testing appointment at the border, or you’d rather not chance being turned away if it’s busy, you should get your PCR or DPI test performed in advance, in any emirate.

The SEHA App will give users access to booking a PCR or DPI at any of the designated Government testing centres around the UAE. These may also book up well in advance of weekends and public holidays so you should plan your trip carefully.

Results from private testing labs at hospitals and clinics in the UAE can also be accepted. These may cost more than using the SEHA service (though in our experience, many of the private labs are now cheaper – eg 85 AED). Emirates shares this list of approved testing centres in Dubai.

What happens next – subsequent testing in Abu Dhabi [abolished]

The rules on subsequent testing, once you are in Abu Dhabi Emirate, have changed numerous times and depend on your vaccination status.

If you are unvaccinated or do not have your vaccination status on the Alhosn App:

Entering Abu Dhabi on a PCR test? You will need to be re-tested by PCR if you stay in Abu Dhabi for 4 consecutive days, and again on day 8 if you stay 8 consecutive days.

Enter Abu Dhabi on a DPI test? You will need to be re-tested by PCR if you stay in Abu Dhabi for 3 consecutive days, and again on day 7 if you stay 7 consecutive days. You cannot use a DPI on consecutive border crossings. If you fail to do so, you will be fined.

Subsequent testing in Abu Dhabi – exemptions

The exemption for subsequent testing for vaccinated individuals was reintroduced (It was briefly abolished from 15 July to 20 August 2021).

If an “E” or Gold Star appear in your Al Hosn App, you only need one PCR test to cross the border and do not need to follow up with the Day 4/8 (PCR) or Day 3/7 tests (DPI). (Swipe left for English)

Abu Dhabi COVID-19 Rules [still current – capacity limites have increased]

Abu Dhabi authorities introduced the “Green Pass” on 20 August 2021.

Essentially, the Green Pass is electronic evidence of your vaccine and PCR status, required to enter most public places. You will require the Al Hosn App on a smartphone to display your Green Pass.

To keep your Green Pass active, vaccinated individuals must take a PCR test every 14 days.

How to register your overseas vaccine in the Al Hosn App

These are the instructions as detailed by the Abu Dhabi Emergency, Crisis & Disasters Committee:

Arriving in to Abu Dhabi from overseas [being updated]

Rules have changed again from 26 February 2022 including abolishing the “Green List”- the information below dates from the last major update on 15 August 2021 – we’re seeking clarity and will update this section soon

If you are a new arrival into Abu Dhabi from overseas (whether a Resident visa holder or a tourist) these rules apply, regardless of which airport you land in.

• Passengers must present a negative COVID test result (valid within 72 hours) before boarding a flight (Under 12’s and those with disabilities are exempt).
• On arriving in Abu Dhabi, at either AUH airport or the International Arrivals tent at the border if flying in to DXB, you will be given a further PCR test. (Expect this process to take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours depending how busy they are).
• Quarantine requirements will depend on the country of origin. A tiered system has been introduced:
  • Visitors from “Green List” countries will be exempt from quarantine, once they get a negative COVID test result on arrival, this may take 24 hours. PCR Testing is required again on Day 6 (and again on Day 9 if unvaccinated).
  • Arrivals from all other countries into Abu Dhabi Emirate must self-quarantine for 10 days, either in a private home, hotel or accommodation provided by the authorities. Testing is required again on Day 9, you will get a tracker watch fitted until your final PCR result.
  • If you are non-green list but vaccinated, this self-quarantine period is reduced to 7 days with a follow-up PCR test on Day 6.

If you first arrived in Dubai or any other airport in the UAE and do not immediately cross the land border you will still need to complete the balance of your time in self-quarantine, per Government guidance below (Swipe left for English):

Prior to the border closure, Abu Dhabi was an easy day trip from Dubai. If you meet all of the testing requirements, there is still no problem visiting Abu Dhabi as a side trip.

Most tour operators are up and running again, offering both group tours and private tours from Dubai to Abu Dhabi for the day. The Dubai to Abu Dhabi bus service is partially back up and running.

Taxies can take passengers across the border with the right documentation, with a maximum of 3 or 4 passengers, depending on the vehicle type.

It’s no surprise how fascinating mosques are to non-Muslims, the sheer elegance and beauty of the buildings, architecturally stunning and the lessons on Islamic culture they hold within.

Whilst the call to prayer may prick the attention of many a visitor to Dubai, I bet you have been curious, can I actually go inside a mosque?

Unlike many other religious buildings around the world, as a non-Muslim, you should not simply walk up to a mosque in Dubai and expect to be allowed in.  Mosques – also known as Masjid in Arabic – in Dubai are, first and foremost a house of worship, not a tourist attraction.

That said, there ARE a few mosques in Dubai and two others in the UAE that allow non-Muslims to visit, not only admiring their beauty from the outside but providing tours and education programs within.

The most famous that visitors to Dubai are likely to be aware of is the Grand Mosque.  By this, we mean the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque which is actually located in neighbouring city Abu Dhabi, a bit over an hour away from Dubai.

Whilst it is possible to visit Abu Dhabi and the Grand Mosque on a day trip, those tight on time may be looking at options readily available with the city of Dubai.  (We will cover how to see the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque later in this post!)

Note there are also different timings and rules during the Holy Month of Ramadan

Dubai mosques that allow access to non-Muslims

So which beautiful Dubai Mosques will permit you to enter as a non-Muslim?

Jumeirah Mosque

The most well-known mosque in Dubai has been welcoming non-Muslim visitors for educational purposes for many years. Their motto is “Open doors, open minds”.

Guided tours are arranged daily (except Fridays) by The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. They last for 75 minutes and include refreshments.

• Timings: 10:00 am & 2:00 pm
• Pre-booking not essential but recommended you arrive 30 minutes before
• Every day except Friday

Al Farooq Omar Bin Al Khattab Mosque

Built in the late 1980s and renovated in 2003 and 2011, Al Farooq Omar Bin Al Khattab Mosque in Dubai is another mosque in the UAE to welcome non-Muslims. The building complex includes not only a mosque but an Islamic Centre equipped with an extensive library on Islamic teachings. You can learn here about Muslim culture, medicine, art and science as well as Quran lessons.

From the exterior, you will see four distinctive minarets of 65-meters. Its great dome measures a staggering 30 metres high and huge stained glass windows flood the interior with light.

Whilst named after Umar Bin Khattab, the building is said to be inspired by Istanbul’s Blue Mosque with its Andalusian and Ottoman style. But don’t be mistaken, it is not one of Dubai’s “Blue Mosques” more on them below!

Tours at this mosque are conducted by the resident cultural guides of Al Farooq Omar Bin Al Khattab Mosque & Centre. The focus of the tours is on the history and architecture of the mosque, along with the painting and engravings and lasts for one hour.

• Sunday to Thursday

Grand Bur Dubai Masjid

Also known as the Grand Mosque (not to be confused with the one in Abu Dhabi), this Grand Mosque can be found in the Bur Dubai area, opposite the Dubai Museum.  Situated in the oldest neighbourhood, it is one of the largest mosques in Dubai, as well as the highest in Dubai with 70m tall minarets. 

It was originally built in 1900, replaced by a newer mosque in 1960 and rebuilt again in 1998 to resemble the original mosque of 1900. It can house 1,200 worshippers.

Whilst you cannot enter the Grand Mosque Bur Dubai as a non-Muslim, you can marvel at the architecture from outside. The Minaret is of Anatolian architecture and the tallest in the city, non-Muslims have permission to climb it for stunning views over old Dubai.

Other interesting mosques in Dubai

Although not open to the non-Muslim public, amongst the 1400+ mosques in Dubai there are many other notable mosques in that capture the eye of visitors that you may be interested in viewing from outside, these include:

Iranian Mosque (Imam Hossein Mosque)

Located on Al Wasl Road in Jumeirah, this is the most famous Shia mosque in Dubai, also known as the Persian Mosque. The mosque was founded by the Iranian community in Dubai in 1979, with the aid of the Iranian Red Crescent. The architecture is inspired by quasi-Fatimid with Persian influences.

Non-Muslim visitors are reportedly allowed into the mosque on guided tours. Private Muslim tour guides can also take visitors outside of prayer times, however, we do not have an exact schedule as of early 2022.

Iranian Mosque (Ali In Abi Talib Mosque)

Located in the Bur Dubai district, near to the textile souk this is the second “Iranian Mosque” in Dubai, built with the distinctive Persian-style architecture; distinctive blues, greens, yellows and reds in beautiful floral patterns and tiled calligraphy of Quranic quotes.

Non-Muslim visitors cannot come inside this Shia mosque. However, external photography of the facade is permitted. You can spot it apart from the other Persian Mosque in Jumeirah as it lacks the two distinctive minarets and large wooden doors.

Al Salaam Mosque

Located in the Al Barsha area, near to Mall of the Emirates, this mosque catches the eye for its stunning red exterior, with white accent features and gold domes and balconies on its minarets. The architecture has been influenced by both Ottoman and Emirati culture and design features. Opened in 2014, the mosque can accommodate 1500 worshippers. Not open to the public.

Khalifa Al Tajer Mosque

Said to be Dubai’s first eco-friendly mosque, located in Deira the mosque can house 3,500 worshippers. The architecture is based on traditional Emirati Bedouin styling for cooling. It may look more “simple” than other mosques in Dubai but is notable for its size and energy efficiency in the bustling older corner of the city. Not open to the public.

Masjid Al Rahim

Masjid Al Rahim is one of the newest and most beautiful mosques in Dubai to capture the eye and curiosity of visitors. Opened in 2013, it is the only Mosque in Dubai Marina. It is particularly notable at night when its golden domes and blue minarets light up the city skyline. Not open to the public.

Zabeel Mosque

Another among the most beautiful in Dubai, Zabeel Mosque in Zabeel Park opened in 2012 with a capacity for 4,000 worshipers. Not open to the public.

Other UAE Mosques of interest

The entire of UAE is said to have over 5,000 mosques. The vast majority do not accept visitors, however here are some notable exceptions or places of history, importance and beauty you may like to include on a trip around the United Arab Emirates:

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi

As we mentioned at the outset, although not in Dubai, certainly one of the UAE’s most famous buildings is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.  The utterly stunning white marble structure with an impressive 82 domes sits proudly at the entrance to Abu Dhabi island.

Covering an impressive 22,400 square metres, including internal courtyards, with the ability to house over 41,000 worshippers at once (10,000 inside and 31,000 outside), it is the third-largest mosque in the world.

Apart from a mosque, it is also the resting place of the country’s Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan; two Imams read the Quran over his resting place 24/7.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is open 7 days a week (Friday’s limited hours due to Congregational Prayer) for non-Muslim visitors. Entry is free, as are guided tours (see timetable here), though they have recently added guest registration which can be done online or at the venue, bring photo identification. 

Guests are provided with the appropriate attire to attend the mosque. (Since COVID this has not been possible due to health and safety reasons, all guests must bring their own abaya or be fully covered in accordance with mosque dress code – these items can be purchased now in a small bazaar attached to the mosque underground entrance).

There are, of course, options to hire a car, take a taxi or navigate the Intercity Bus and Abu Dhabi public bus system.  We explain each of these options in much more detail here.

If you are after truly stunning photos of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, our top tip is to self-drive in order to arrive either before opening time (9:00 am Saturday to Thursday), or come much later in the afternoon when the sun is setting. It can still be crowded at this time but nowhere near as busy as mid-morning when most tour buses from Dubai arrive en masse.

• Timings: Sat to Thu 9:00 am to 10:00 pm
• Friday’s 9:00 am to 12:00 pm (closes for Prayer) & 3:00 pm to 10:00 pm
• Ramadan: 10:00 am to 6:00 pm (Closes for Iftar – breaking of the fast), then 9:00 pm to 11:30 pm

Al Noor Mosque

Situated in neighbouring Sharjah, this stunning Ottoman-style mosque completed in 2005 was the first to open its doors to non-Muslim visitors. A guided one hour tour can be arranged by Sharjah Centre for Cultural Communication and include complimentary qahwa (Arabic coffee).

Not only architecturally beautiful, but the mosque also overlooks the Khalid Lagoon which adds to its stunning splendour and is easily accessible from the other cultural highlights in the Heart of Sharjah.

• Timings: 10:00 am
• Every Monday and Thursday [suspended since COVID]

Sharjah Mosque

Newly completed in 2019 it is one of the newest and most impressive mosques in the UAE. It is now Sharjah’s largest mosque with grounds covering 185,000 square meters, the Mosque can take 25,000 worshippers.

Whilst the inside is for worshippers only, guests are invited to admire the mosque from the track that runs around the entire mosque complex. Learn more at visitsharjah.com

Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Fujairah

The largest mosque on the UAE’s eastern coast and second largest in the country, the Sheikh Zayed Mosque covers an area the size of three football pictures. The mosque has six minarets each 100 meters high and the great prayer hall has space for 32,000 worshippers. It is not open to the public.

Bidyah Mosque, Fujairah

Dating back to 1446 AD, this is believed to be the oldest mosque in the UAE. The mosque, constructed of mud and stone, is tiny and whilst non-muslims are not allowed to enter, it is possible to catch a peep of the interior through the doors.

The mosque still hosts daily prayers and all visitors to the site even from outside should dress modestly (women should cover their hair as well as their arms and legs). The Mosque can be seen as part of an east-coast UAE day trip.

Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Grand Mosque (Al Ain Grand Mosque)

Based in the regional city of Al Ain, Abu Dhabi Emirate, the Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Grand Mosque named after the country’s current ruling President opened to the public on 21 April 2021.

Capable of housing 20,000 worshippers inside and in its external courtyards, it’s one of the country’s largest mosques measuring in at over 250,000m²

COVID restrictions have limited entry since opening, it is unclear as yet whether it will be open to non-worshippers in the future.

Things to keep in mind visiting a Dubai Mosque

It is essential you follow the necessary protocol to enter a mosque, even as a non-Muslim:

• Dress modestly:
  • For women, this means arms and legs covered, as well as a scarf that covers your head. Some tours will provide women with the necessary abaya, including the Shayla or headscarf. If wearing your own clothing, keep it long and loose.
  • Men must cover beyond their knees (though full-length trousers are preferable) and have shirt sleeves.

• Shoes must be left in cubbies outside the entrance to a mosque. Socks may be worn if you do not want to walk around barefoot.
• It should go without saying, you cannot take food, drinks, alcohol or cigarettes inside mosques.

Let’s look at each of the sites in more detail:

The Oasis of Al Ain

There are several Oasis in Al Ain that make up the UNESCO World Heritage Site, namely:

• Al Ain Oasis
• Al Muatared Oasis
• Al Jimi Oasis
• Al Qattara Oasis
• Al Hili Oasis

The largest is Al Ain Oasis, which can be found in the city centre. Extensive restoration works took place on the site over the last decade, and it reopened to the public in 2016 and is now the city’s most popular attraction.

A tranquil forest of trees and alleyed laneways, it was nearly lost beneath the city as rapid development occurred in the 1980s and 1990s. The 3,000-acre site (1,200 hectares) contains more than 147,000 palm trees. You will also find within the grounds an old fortification and mosque.

Most visitors are intrigued by the falaj system, an ancient irrigation system that brings bore water to farms. A small Eco-Centre has been built within the Al Ain Oasis to provide more information on the falaj’s history and importance.

Just outside the oasis is the Al Ain Oasis Plaza, which offers refreshments until 9 p.m. at night.

The Oasis is open 8 am to 5 pm daily and free to enter.

Jebel Hafeet Bee Hive Tombs

Found at the foot of Abu Dhabi’s highest peak Jebel Hafeet (Jebal Hafit), the circular Bee Hive Tombs are thought to date back up to 5,000 years. The artefacts found within the tombs have helped archaeologists to substantiate claims of trade routes dating to around 3,200 to 2,700 BCE.

Since February 2020, the tombs now fall within the Jebel Hafit Desert Park. Hiking and biking are available, along with camel rides, dune buggy experiences and even overnight camping in Bedouin-style tents and eco glamping options.

Open 8 am to 6 pm or sunset, entry 5 AED activities extra.

Hili Archaeological Park

Home to the largest discovered Bronze Age settlement in the UAE, the park is a living museum of tombs, settlements, and a falaj—mostly, only foundations can be spotted today. Most significant items have been moved to the central Al Ain National Museum (which is closed for an unspecified period of time for renovations) in the centre of Al Ain, adjacent to the Al Ain Oasis.

The park is open limited hours 4 pm to 11 pm daily, entry is free.

Bidaa Bint Saud

There are several small finds near one another contributing to this archaeological site, sitting about 15kms to the north of Al Ain:

• Numerous rectangular, stone-constructed tombs from the Hafit period (3200 to 2600 BC) on top of a mountain called Gharn bint Saud
• 1,500 metres to the west is a 3,000-year-old falaj system
• A large mudbrick building with column bases was found near the falaj, thought to perhaps be a distribution point for the falaj

This site is quite isolated and not easily accessible to the public. Finds from the site are also housed in the Al Ain National Museum (which has been ‘closed for renovations’ for an extensive period of time). You can learn more about this site on abudhabiculture.ae

Open 24/7, entry is free.

Al Ain Camel Market

Situated on Zayed Bin Sultan Street, not far from the Al Bawadi Mall, the camel market provides the opportunity to see hundreds of camels, sheep and goats being bought and sold. It’s the only market of its kind in the UAE and is definitely worth a visit.

Open daily from 6.00 am until 7.00 pm. Entry is free. 

The Green Mubazzarah

The name ‘Jebel Hafeet’ means ‘Green Mountain’, and whilst there is certainly less vegetation than the name suggests, there are areas where some species of plant have flourished, such as the Green Mubazzarah, where hot springs flow from the mountain onto the plain below.

The area has become a resort on its own right with an artificial boating lake, bikes for rent, and chalets to stay in overnight. There is also a swimming pool with a charge of 5 AED and a little train that will take you around the site with 25 AED for adults and 15 AED for children. 

Weekends here are very busy, as families come from all over the UAE and even from over the border in Oman to enjoy the parklands and dip their feet in the healing waters!

Site open 24/7. Attraction times vary. 

Al Ain Zoo

Another family-friendly option whilst in Al Ain is a visit to Al Ain Zoo. Along with large enclosures featuring a range of animals from around the world, the zoo offers a safari experience and the chance to drive through the vast reserve area in the safety and comfort of an air-conditioned vehicle.

If you want to do more than observe the animals from afar, there are a number of animal experiences on offer, including giraffe feeding (an additional fee payable at the giraffe enclosure).

Children will also enjoy the range of playgrounds and interactive exhibits on site, as well as the extensive gardens and open spaces to run around in. At the height of the day, there are plenty of shady areas to escape the sun, as well as the indoor Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre.

The learning centre offers the opportunity to learn about the UAE’s unique natural environment and the animals and people that live there.

Open daily from 9.00 am until 7.00 pm (closed in July and August), entry is approximately 31 AED for adults. 

When is it best to visit Al Ain?

Like much of the country, the cooler winter months are ideal for exploring Al Ain from November through to April. In the summer months, it is still possible, and the oases do bring a refreshing reprieve from the summer heat, but be prepared. It can still be a very sweaty experience in the summer.

In the winter, Al Ain can experience quite heavy fog, which plays havoc on the highways to Al Ain from Dubai and Abu Dhabi. It normally burns off before lunchtime, leaving you with glorious sunny winter afternoons and perfect sunsets from Jebel Hafeet.

Day 1 – 6 Day Dubai Itinerary: Old Meets New

Step back into the Dubai of the past from Bedouin roots to bustling Dubai Creek.

For your first day of sightseeing in Dubai, it really helps to go back to the grassroots of what Dubai city is about; a busy trading port city based around Dubai Creek.

Get your bearings at Dubai Frame

Let’s start your exploration of Dubai taking in the views from the Dubai Frame. Pretty much what it says – it’s a giant picture frame! One of the first tourist highlights you will capture coming from the airport into the city.

You ascend up one side of the 150m high frame (48 floors) and then walk across the top. The see-through floored sky deck gives you fabulous views of Old Dubai, Dubai Creek to Sharjah and beyond in one direction, and the modern skyscrapers of Downtown Dubai to the other.

Getting there: Nearest Metro is Al Jafiliya for Zabeel Park but it’s a decent walk, you may prefer a taxi/Uber drop off

Wander Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood

This is the oldest part of Dubai city, a labyrinth of narrow laneways that date back to the 19th century. The historic area (previously known as Bastakiya) is protected so that the city’s heritage does not become lost forever under the sprawling skyscrapers. Most of the traditional sandy-coloured low-rise buildings are now galleries, museums, and small cafes.

Within this area, you will find the Dubai Museum, housed within the Al Faihi Fort which dates back to 1787. At only 3 AED you should definitely pop your head in for more insight into the country’s Bedouin past and the pre-oil era of Dubai. {CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS SINCE EARLY 2021}

There are many other Dubai museums to be discovered within the laneways, the Coffee Museum is one of our favourites worth seeking out.

Getting there: Al Fahidi Bus Station or Al Fahidi Metro station

Lunch at Al Seef Waterfront

By now you have most certainly worked up an appetite, so if you’ve not stopped for lunch in XVA Cafe or Arabian Tea House situated within Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, now would be time to head to one of many restaurants in this waterfront development. Seamlessly blending old with new it’s directly across the street, next to the Al Fahidi Marine Transport Station.

Al Seef is set up like a traditional souk so you’ll be able to do your shopping here too. Kids may enjoy popping into the Museum of Illusions or have some fun with photos in the instagrammable laneways.

Cross Dubai Creek on an Abra

An absolute must for an authentic old Dubai experience! Whilst there are far more modern methods these days of crossing the city, a traditional abra at 1 AED per person is still a steal!

Day 2 – 6 Day Dubai Itinerary: Modern Dubai

Explore around Downtown Dubai, from towering heights to mighty fountains and everything in between.

In complete contrast to Day 1, let’s take you over to the glimmering skyscrapers of Downtown Dubai and the ultra-modern side of the city.

Scale the Burj Khalifa

It would be hard to set out a Dubai itinerary and not include THE most iconic building in the city – the tallest building in the world no less! Yes, you can travel to the observation deck of the building on the 124th and 125th floors (extra packages take you to the 148th floor!), or even dine at At.mosphere restaurant and lounge on Level 122.

If there’s one part of your Dubai itinerary you simply must book in advance it’s the Burj Khalifa. Tickets at the door are extortionately more expensive and can sell out. Do allow a good 2 hours for queuing and having a good look around. Note sunset and sunrise slots (only on weekends) cost more.

Evening in Downtown Dubai

There are several ways to continue enjoying Downtown Dubai well into the evening, its the hub of Dubai nightlife alongside JBR/Dubai Marina.

The Dubai Fountain show is one of the most popular free things to do in Dubai. Starting from 6:00 PM nightly, then every half hour watch the fabulously choreographed light and sound show on Burj Lake, sitting at the foot of Burj Khalifa. Later in the evening the Burj Khalifa also lights up for half-hourly shows.

For a close-up view of the fountain show, you can take an abra ride on the lake. Alternatively, our favourite is to pick out one of the restaurants with uninterrupted views in either Dubai Mall or Souk Al Bahar and dine whilst getting to see the show a few times over without the crowds.

If your trip happens to align with something you enjoy at Dubai Opera, this is another sensational Downtown Dubai experience to get glammed up for.

If concrete and modern Dubai is really not you, then head to the listing below of the best cultural activities to continue on a few more activities we couldn’t squeeze in Day 1. A day trip to the Heart of Sharjah may be preferable if the older side of the UAE interests you more.

JBR, Bluewaters, Dubai Marina

A lot of first-timers to Dubai find the area of JBR and Dubai Marina a great place to start. Familiarise yourself with The Walk & The Beach, then if you’d like to stretch your legs further, take a walk over to the ultra-modern Bluewaters Island to dine and marvel at the Dubai skyline along Jumeirah Beach

(Ain Dubai, the largest observation wheel in the world was briefly open to the public in 2021/22 but has since remained closed, its reopening remains a bit of a mystery)

You can easily spend a whole day in the JBR area between activities along the beach – think inflatable water parks, splash pads, jet ski, and flyboarding, Flying Cup sky-high dining – read more on what to do around JBR here!

You may also want to head out into the stunning Gulf waters with a cruise. Plentiful operators can be found in Dubai Marina from speed boat tours around Palm Jumeirah, or for a more sedate experience at a fraction of the cost, the RTA Ferry is a winner (with kids at least – they love anything that goes!)

Getting there: JBR/Dubai Marina is the perfect place to stay with 6 days in Dubai due to the high number of spacious hotel apartments, or by Metro take Red Line to DAMAC Properties or DMCC Metro Station

La Mer (Now closed; To be replaced by J1 Beach later in 2024)

Another ultra-modern beachfront area of the city to explore is La Mer. An eclectic mix of palm-tree-lined walkways, retail, dining & play opportunities. There’s even a mini water park here. As pretty at night as it is by day La Mer is a trendy new addition for families and singles alike to enjoy Dubai’s modern vibes.

If you don’t want to spend the whole day simply at the beach – or it’s simply too hot after an hour or so – La Mer sees you close to both the Jumeirah Mosque – the largest mosque in Dubai open to the public for daily tours – and Etihad Museum, telling the story of the country’s unification in 1971.

Another short hop away is the Shindagha historic district near Mina Port, another great way to learn about Dubai’s past.

Getting there: No direct Metro stop (nearest is Financial Centre then a 10-minute taxi), or take bus 8, 9, or 88 along Jumeirah Beach Road

Dubai also has plenty of public beaches, some are completely free and others have a small Dubai municipality charge but great facilities. Local favourites include Al Mamzar Park and Kite Beach has slightly bigger waves than others, or head to Sunset Beach for iconic views of the Burj Al Arab.

Day 4 – 6 Day Dubai Itinerary: Abu Dhabi Day Trip

No trip to the UAE is complete without seeing the Capital, Abu Dhabi.

The most iconic of buildings to visit in Abu Dhabi is the simply stunning Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

Whilst it is possible to squeeze in a trip to the Grand Mosque only on a half-day trip to Abu Dhabi – it’s less than 90 minutes on a tour coach from Dubai to Abu Dhabi – you’d be doing yourself an injustice not to see more of the city.

Getting there: If you want to move at your own pace then definitely hire a car for your Abu Dhabi day trip, but catching a tour is the easiest option – the big price differential is whether you join a shared tourist coach or take a private tour

We have more details here on the spectacular places in Abu Dhabi you can squeeze in on a one-day trip from Dubai – including the Louvre Museum and Qasr al Watan, the Presidential Palace. A longer itinerary would see at least 2 to 3 days spent in Abu Dhabi to properly capture the highlights of the capital.

Day 5 – 6 Day Dubai Itinerary: Dubai Theme Park Day!

Thrill-seekers and adrenaline junkies will never be left disappointed in Dubai.

Now if you have littles travelling with you (or big kids at heart!) you may well need to move theme park day further up the itinerary or dedicate two full days.

There’s a superb selection of world-class theme parks to choose from in Dubai. If you’re visiting in the beautiful shoulder seasons (approximately March to May and October to November), our top pick would be one of the mega water parks – choose from Atlantis Aquaventure or Wild Wadi at Jumeirah.

(NB if you stay at Atlantis the Palm or any of the Jumeirah hotels, your water park entry will be included!)

Over the coolest part of the year (December to February), Dubai Parks & Resorts is our top choice. Here you can choose between four connected theme parks (ideally you can fit in two of these in a day – three at a squeeze):

• Legoland Dubai
• Legoland Dubai Water Park
• Motiongate
• Real Madrid World

And if it’s the peak of summer, the top pick goes to IMG Worlds of Adventure – think Marvel characters to Cartoon Network-themed rides and activities. IMG is entirely indoors to beat the heat.

Getting there: The Theme Parks in Dubai are all quite spread out, Atlantis Aquaventure is on the outer crescent of Palm Jumeirah and Wild Wadi is close to Souk Madinat Jumeirah. Dubai Parks & Resorts is in Jebel Ali, beyond the end of the Metro and IMG Worlds of Adventure sits south of the city. In a group, it’s worth getting a taxi for this day

Day 6 – 6 Day Dubai Itinerary: Shopping & splurge on something unique

On your last day, it’s time to tick off anything you’re yet to see and do from our ideas above and engage in something uniquely Dubai.

Souk Madinat Jumeirah

The perfect place for a little retail therapy in Dubai, Souk Madinat Jumeirah is a modern souk (market) built in traditional style, with indoor and outdoor (seasonal) stalls and shops offering tourist tat to genuine souvenirs and a superb range of eateries to choose from.

You can get some brilliant Burj Al Arab views here and even take an abra out on the waterways around the extravagant Jumeirah hotels (a bit more pricey than the 1 AED on Dubai Creek but what an amazing backdrop!).

Getting there: Souk Madinat Jumeirah is not on the Metro but you can get to Mall of the Emirates and a short taxi from there, or stop at Internet City and then hop on Bus 88.

Only in Dubai experiences

Finish off your trip to Dubai by partaking in some of the most unique “only in Dubai” experiences including:

• Enjoy a sunrise balloon ride over the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve
• Try afternoon tea at the “7-star” Burj Al Arab
• Skydive over Palm Jumeirah
• Zipline across Dubai Marina
• Seaplane journey over the city
• Dine in the world’s highest restaurant

If you’ve not had the opportunity yet, find one of Dubai’s dramatic rooftop bars (seasonal) to finish off your incredible week in Dubai with dramatic views over the city skyline or the Arabian Gulf.

The world’s tallest tower

Let’s start with the most astounding and obvious in Dubai, you can’t look past the Burj Khalifa, the largest man-made structure in the world.

Standing at an incredible 828m (2,716.5 feet), it is the world’s tallest building as well as holding the record as:

• Tallest freestanding structure in the world (to its very tip, with spire, 829.8m)
• The building with the highest number of stories in the world (163 floors)
• The highest outdoor observation deck in the world (Level 124&125 + Level 148)
• The highest restaurant in the world (At.Mosphere on level 122 – 441.3m high)
• The highest lounge in the world (Levels 152-154 – 585m)
• Tallest service elevator in the world (504m – 1,654 feet)

The World’s Highest Infinity Pool

The spectacular new twin-tower Address Beach Resort sits at the end of The Beach, JBR offers an infinity pool on the 77th floor! At a towering 294m/964 feet above ground level, it’s officially the highest infinity pool in the world, not quite the longest but at 94m you’ll still fit in some decent laps in this adults-only dreamy destination in Dubai.

The largest dancing fountain show in the world

A record that used to be held by the nightly Dubai fountain show on Burj Khalifa Lake in Downtown Dubai, a new record was broken on 22 October 2020 with the opening of the Palm Fountains.

Situated in the waters between Atlantis the Palm and The Pointe, Palm Jumeirah, the Palm Fountain super shooter reaches a staggering 105m into the sky, and the record-breaking fountain display covered 7,327 m².

The world’s deepest swimming pool

Scuba diving at 60 metres deep, indoors? Only in Dubai, of course! Opened in July 2021, Deep Dive Dubai holds 14 million litres of water and includes a sunken city for exploring. Free dive, scuba dive, snorkel, dress like a mermaid? This new indoor sensation is bound to be a hit with thrill-seeking tourists in Dubai.

The world’s largest hand-woven carpet

Found on the floor of the main prayer hall of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi, UAE, the largest hand-woven Persian carpet in the world is a staggering 5,630 m² (60,600.81 ft²).

It took 1,200 weavers a little over a year to complete. Manufactured by the Iran Carpet Company and brought to Abu Dhabi in 9 pieces for final installation – it includes 2.2 billion hand-tied knots and weighs over 12 tonnes.

The world’s fastest roller coaster

We could only be talking about Formula Rossa, the 240 km/hr coaster can be found at Ferrari World on Yas Island.  There are plenty of other thrill-seeking rides here, including Flying Aces – the world’s steepest and fastest cable lift (51 degrees and 30km/hr) and the world’s tallest inverted loop at 52m – but it is still the record-breaking Formula Rossa that drives the crowds!

The world’s largest indoor climbing wall

This is another record going to Abu Dhabi’s collection of incredible theme parks on Yas Island (but wait, there’s more!). 

The CLYMB indoor climbing centre includes SUMMYT, a 141-foot mega wall that indoor rock climbing experts can scale throughout the year.

The world’s largest indoor flight chamber

If that’s not enough, CLYMB is also home to the largest indoor flight chamber measuring 9.5m wide by 26m high.

The world’s largest indoor theme park

We’re on Yas Island Abu Dhabi again for this record at Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi.  The entirely indoor theme park is perfect for visiting year-round and has 29 different rides and attractions, including the heroes and villains of DC comics through to Cartoon Junction, Looney Toon Favourites and the Flinstones.

The record was previously held by the 1.5 million square foot (139,354 m²) Dubai theme park IMG World’s of Adventure; however, at 1.65 million square feet (153,290 m²) WB World Abu Dhabi now holds the crown – but just wait, we don’t think they’ll hold it for long!!)

The largest Mall in the world

Now this one holds a little bit more conjecture as it depends on what exactly you’re measuring – square footage, shops, gross leasable area?

Although Dubai Mall still seems to be touted as the leader here at a size of 1.1 million square metres (nearly 12 million square foot) of retail space and over 1200 outlets, there are several Malls in Asia, including New South China Mall and Golden Resources Mall in China, as well as CentralWorld in Bangkok which claim to be larger in the leasable area and total shops.

Dubai can’t officially claim this one as a world record, but we assure you it is HUGE and surprise it’s one of the city’s top 10 highlights for new visitors.

The most leaning tower in the world

Why let the leaning tower of Pisa have all the fun?  Deliberately built on an angle, Capital Gate Tower in Abu Dhabi stands at 160m tall and is built to lean 18 degrees to the west, making it the farthest manmade leaning building. They also claim to have the highest suspended swimming pool at the Andaz Hotel, but we haven’t got this one recorded as a Guinness World Record yet.

The world’s tallest hotel

The Gevora Hotel in Dubai holds the crown as the tallest hotel in the world – would you believe now superseding  JW Mariott Marquis by one meter! The Gevora stands at 356 meters (1,168 feet) with 528 rooms.

There are actually taller hotel rooms to be found from floors 102 to 118 at The Ritz-Carlton in Hong Kong, but the 488m tall International Commerical Centre tower in which they sit is not a dedicated hotel, it has mixed residential and commercial floors.

Most skyscrapers in the world

While we’re on the topic of exceptionally tall buildings… yep, you guessed it. Dubai has more buildings over 300m tall than anywhere else in the world. There are, as of 2019, 21 buildings in Dubai that stand at this lofty height, surpassing even Chinese megacities Shanghai and Hong Kong.

The world’s twistiest tower

Let’s keep going with the city’s towering facts. Dubai Marina is home to Cayan Tower. Each floor of the building sits at a 1.2-degree rotation to the next, resulting in the 307.3 m (1,008.2 foot) structure twisting a whopping 90 degrees from its base.

The world’s longest zipline

In the northern Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, you will find the country’s tallest peak (sadly, no world record breakers there at a mere 1,934 m in height!) but it is home to the worlds longest zipline. Opening on 31 January 2018 the largest unbroken span of the zipline is 2,831.88m (9,291 ft) in length, smashing its way into the record books.

The world’s longest urban zipline

And not to be outdone, the city of Dubai also had the world’s longest urban zipline. Straddling Dubai Marina, the 1km long XDubai XLine experience takes you from a 170m high platform from Amwaj Towers to Dubai Marina Mall at an average speed of 80km/hr. [Temporarily closed]

The world’s highest tennis court

The Burj Al Arab helicopter pad is like something out of a James Bond movie. Federer and Agassi played a match atop the helicopter pad in 2005 to promote the ATP Dubai Duty-Free tennis (bags not playing ball boy for that one) and set the record for playing at 211 metres above ground level.

The world’s largest chandelier

Back down the road to Abu Dhabi continuing to break records here, the stunning Qasr Al Watan presidential palace opened to the Public in 2019.  You will find the chandelier in the Spirit of Collaboration Hall weighing in at 12 tonnes with 350,000 pieces of crystal and 30,000 separate lights.

The world’s largest flower garden

A flower garden in the desert? Seems hard to believe, Dubai Miracle Garden is very inconspicuously buried in the outer area of Dubai known as Dubailand.  It was once destined to be a grand theme park destination but has since crept into the suburbs. 

The master plan for a stunning garden lived on though.  The flower garden which is open seasonally to the public from November to May every year is said to be home to astounding 150,000 blooms. Whilst not the largest in total square metres, it’s the sheer number of flowers and impressive displays that have won it worldwide accolades.

Whilst the claim as the “largest flower garden” does not seem to be substantiated by a Guinness World Record, they DO hold the official record for:

• The largest floral arrangement – an Emirates A380 display measures in at 72.95 m x 78.34m x 21.98m
• The tallest topiary structure in the world – a giant Mickey Mouse measuring in at 18.006m was unveiled at Dubai Miracle Gardens in January 2018 in conjunction with Disney to celebrate Mickey’s 90th Birthday (over 100,000 flowers are reported to have been used!)
• The largest vertical garden in the world

The longest driverless Metro system

Did you know that the Dubai Metro is actually entirely automated? Yep, that’s right, Dubai’s most popular public transport included the Dubai Metro Red Line, which runs the length of Sheikh Zayed Road through the heart of the city’s most popular attractions.  The 52.1km track, combined with Dubai Metro’s 22.5km long Green Line, makes for the longest driverless metro system in the world, surpassing Vancouver’s Skytrain.

The world’s largest cup of hot tea

The biggest brew in the world measured in at 5,000 litres (1,320.86 gallons) at Dubai’s Global Village in January 2018.

The world’s largest incense burner

At 3m tall and weighing 1000kg (2,200 lbs), the incense burner (mabkhara) made of ashwood and brass by fragrance company Ajmal holds the Guinness World Record.  It was unveiled as part of the Dubai Shopping Festival in March 2001

The world’s largest lantern

Well we’re going through inanimate objects, right?  You will find this lantern at the entrance to the fresh food Souq Al Jubail in Sharjah. At 13.09m high and 5m wide, the lantern is made from wood and copper.

The world’s largest book

Measuring in at 5m x 8.06m, weighing 1500kg and containing 429 pages, the project to highlight the lifetime achievements of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and the positive influences of Islam was unveiled in Dubai on February 27, 2012.

The world’s largest sword

Who doesn’t need a 14.93m sword right? Found in the middle of Al Saif roundabout in Fujairah, the record was set in December 2011.

The world’s largest gold ring

Najmat Taiba (Star of Taiba), is the world’s largest gold ring on display at Rossella Jewelry at Dubai Gold Souk in Deira.

Weighing in at 64 kilograms (141 lbs), the 21-carat ring boasts over 5kg of diamonds and 615 Swarovski crystals. It was created by 55 goldsmiths and is estimated to cost $3 million USD.

The world’s longest handmade gold chain

While we’re on the topic of jewellery, the “Dubai Celebration Chain” required over 100 craftsmen over 45 days to build the 22 karats 256-kilogram creation to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Dubai Shopping Festival.  It was unveiled at the Deira Gold Souk in January 2015 – and later sold off in pieces.

The world’s largest vertical maze

Yep, that’s a thing. A permanent feature of Maze Tower on Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai, your mind will boggle staring at the 3,974.22 square metre design on the side of this skyscraper tower.

The world’s largest picture frame

This architectural wonder in Zabeel Park, Dubai, might be best known as an observation deck that bridges between the old and new cities of Dubai.  It is in fact, still classified as a  frame due to its unique structure with a height of 150m (492 feet)  making it the biggest picture frame on earth!

The most number of Nationalities on a plane

Celebrating the diversity of nationalities, Emirates set this record on National Day 2019 with more than 145 nationalities packing an A380 flight on 2 December 2019.

This was certainly a record-breaking fete – but at any given time, there are approximately 50 different nationalities on every Emirates flight!

The largest human image of the UAE National Flag

Yep, we said some of them are a little obscure!  The UAE takes immense pride in celebrating National Day and all the diversity that comes with it.  Students at GEMS Cambridge College in Abu Dhabi set the record at National Day 46 in 2017 with this effort!

The world’s largest Christmas ornament

Found in the Muslim country of Dubai, of course! The gigantic Christmas Ornament was displayed in the Dubai Mall in 2018 with a whopping 4.68m (15.35 foot) diameter and weighing an astounding 1,100 kgs (2425 lbs).

The world’s most expensive Christmas tree

Another Christmas record! Reportedly costing $11.4 million USD, it was constructed in the centre of Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi in December 2010.  The bejewelled tree had 181 items and stood 13.1m tall (we believe Kempinski may have topped this record in Spain in 2019 with a $15 million tree).

Every year Emirates Palace still put up one of the most impressive and luxurious Christmas tree displays in the world.

The world’s largest jigsaw

Yep, this is in Dubai too.  The jigsaw inscribed with “the Year of Zayed” in honour of the country’s founding father was unveiled at Dubai Multi Commodities Centre on July 7, 2018.  The puzzle contained 12,320 pieces.

The world’s largest umbrella

You guessed it! In the city full of sunshine, of course, you’ll find this one in UAE with a 24.5m diameter and standing at 15.22m in height, it was erected as part of an Emirates Happiness Events in the UAE Capital Abu Dhabi on 24 March 2018.

The world’s largest flag flown

This one we head to the Emirate of Sharjah just northeast of Dubai.  On 2 November 2017, to mark national day Trident Support Flagpoles and Sharjah Investment and Development Authority flew the UAE national flag at a whopping 2,488.56 square meters.

The world’s largest suspended aquarium screen

The main tank at the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, found in Dubai Mall, is 32.88 m wide, 8.3 m high, and 7.5m thick, the glass panel weighs in at a whopping 245,614kg!

Set to open later in 2021, Ain Dubai on the man-made Bluewaters Island stands proudly at 250m (820ft) tall. With 48 capsules and capable of carrying 1400 passengers at capacity, it will beat its nearest competitor, the High Roller in Las Vegas, by a good 42.5m (139ft).
