Dubai to Yas Island FREE Shuttle

When you book your tickets to any of the Yas Theme Parks, you can take advantage of the FREE Yas Express shuttle bus service from Dubai to Yas Island. This is by far the most convenient way to travel to Yas Island from Dubai at no additional cost.

You will need evidence of an e-ticket for any of the theme parks; the bus operates on a first-come, first-served basis.

There are now multiple designated starting points in Dubai (take note of the latest timetable here). Yas Express Route D includes buses that depart from:

There is also a daily service operating from the Northern Emirates to assist guests on a day trip to Abu Dhabi. This service departs from different locations each day:

If the Yas Island Shuttle bus timings do not work for you, and you already have your theme park tickets, you may prefer to arrange your own transfers; this is undoubtedly the fastest way to get to Yas Island from Dubai and will maximise your time at the parks. These are options to consider:

• Use Get Transfer – a service that allows users to put in their journey details, and drivers bid for your fare. You set the vehicle size you need and whether you’d like it to be one-way or a return transfer. A good way to get competitive pricing over the regular ride-share service that will set your price for you (Works sort of similarly to In Drive, which you may be familiar with; In Drive is not presently an option available in the UAE)

Dubai to Yas Island Taxi Fare

If you take a metered taxi from Dubai to Yas Island, you will likely pay the following, based on our experience:

• From Downtown Dubai 250 AED ($68 USD)
• From Dubai Airport 300 AED ($82 USD)
• From JBR/Dubai Marina area 200 AED ($54 USD)

Taxis from Dubai are allowed to cross into the Emirate of Abu Dhabi without issue. However, some taxi drivers may insist that you stop at the first ADNOC petrol station after the border and ask you to switch to a local Abu Dhabi taxi to complete the journey. They are most likely near the end of their shift and don’t want the extra hour + journey back!

Self-Drive Dubai to Yas Island

If you have access to a car or wish to rent a car and drive in Dubai, you can easily self-drive to Yas Island:

• From Dubai, take the E11 Highway (Sheikh Zayed Road)
• Stay left at Al Shahama for the E10, signposted to Abu Dhabi
• Take the Yas Island East Exit for the E12 (also marked ‘Yas Leisure Drive‘)
• Follow the blue signs that say ‘Yas Leisure Drive‘ until you reach the brown tourist signs. Follow each to your final destination – each theme park has its own free car parking.

Yas Island to Dubai Transport

Returning to Dubai from Yas Island, you can return the same free shuttle service with your ticket as evidence that you have been to the parks. 

If this does not fit your timings, however, you may need to take a metered taxi back to Dubai from Yas Island, or try a ride-share service such as Careem. They are available at all four venues and will take you door-to-door.

There isn’t anything quite like watching trained race camels mounted with robotic jockeys race at speeds of around 65km an hour along the desert tracks.

What is Camel Racing?

Camel racing goes back many centuries when Middle-Eastern people of the local population would get together during festivals and events such as weddings to take part in this folk sport. Similar to horse racing, camels would compete against each other by running along a predetermined track.

On the day of the camel race, anywhere between 15-60 camels can be competing with each other for trophies and prize money. Camels adorned in bright colours stand behind the gates at the start line and sprint as soon as the gates fling open.

There’s excitement in the air as you hear the crowds cheering for these camels sprinting with their necks bobbing into a fog of sand. Their trainers follow them closely in their SUVs, driving around the race track and giving instructions through robotic jockeys sitting on top of the camels. Races typically last up to 15 minutes, which is then followed by the award ceremony.

Camel racing in Dubai draws in large crowds and promises to be an excellent tourist attraction. The races in the UAE even include traditional customs, rituals and folklore during the entire day of racing to evoke the region’s customs amongst visitors and tourists.

The connection that Emiratis have with camels has been long-rooted. Not only were these animals used as modes of transport across the vast deserts, but they were also a reliable source of food and milk for the locals. The camel racing events that we see now in UAE preserve the rich Emirati cultural values and reflect the region’s traditions.

While the love for camel racing prevails, there are some things that have changed significantly over time. With the opportunity for the winning camels to walk away with cash prizes worth millions of dirhams, this internationally recognised sport has led to the rise of facilities for camel training, breeding, and research.

Nowadays, techniques such as special artificial insemination and embryo transfer techniques are used for crossbreeding select lineages and raising camels that are meant for the racing track. Careful attention is given to their training and nutrition in order to prepare racing camels for competition.

In the UAE, under the strict guidelines of the Emirates Camel Racing Federation, local governments encourage breeding programs and even provide subsidies to camel owners and breeders.

Safe Practices With Robotic Jockeys

In 2002, the UAE outlawed child jockeys riding camels and welcomed lightweight robotic jockeys instead. These robotic jockeys’ basic structure comprises a metal frame and a cordless power drill attached to a whip that encourages the camel to run faster without causing any harm.

These robots are decorated in the colours of the team and placed on moulded metal saddles that go on the camel during a race.

Advancement in technology has allowed some trainers to add on extra features to their jockeys without compromising on the weight that may slow down the camel. These features include a GPS to locate the camel’s location, a walkie-talkie allowing the trainer to speak to the camel and a heart rate monitor to keep track of the camel’s health.

When is Camel Racing Season in Dubai?

The Dubai camel racing season typically takes place during the cooler winter season, from October to March, at the different camel racing tracks across the country.

Races will likely occur early mornings, around 6:30 AM to 10:00 AM, usually on weekends. The Dubai races also run during the week for certain events.

What began as an informal sport quickly became an international racing event recognised across a global platform. The camel racing festivals held in UAE under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum – Dubai’s Crown Prince and the Chairman of Dubai Sports Council, bring together thousands of camel owners and race enthusiasts from across the UAE as well as the other Middle Eastern regions.

Where to Attend Camel Racing Dubai 2025-26

Camel races are free to attend; however, because they draw large crowds every year, it is advisable to book seats beforehand. Come in early on race day to take pictures with the camels, too.

In Dubai, the largest track is the Al Marmoon Camel Racing Track, situated near the Al Marmoum Heritage Village, which is a half-hour drive on the Al Ain road towards Oman.

All the camels you’ll find in the UAE are dromedary (single hump) camels.

If you see races classified as Haqaqa (Hukayif), Laqaiya (Laqaya), Izaah, Thnaya and Holoul, this refers to the camel racing category, defined by the camels’ age.

Dubai is often mistaken as the UAE’s capital, but, in fact, it is neighbouring Abu Dhabi that holds this crown. Home to the country’s Federal Supreme Council and President of the UAE, HH Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed al Nahyan, it’s also home to some of the country’s most magnificent architecture and cultural sites.

So many stops that it is challenging to see them all on a Dubai day trip, but here are a few that we recommend you should try to fit into a single-day trip from Dubai:

2. Best Dubai Day Trip: Musandam Peninsula, Oman

Dubai to Khasab distance: 196km / approx 2.5 hours

Transporting you to a whole different country but within reasonable driving distance from Dubai, the “Norway of Arabia” awaits in the Omani exclave of Musandam. Sitting to the northeast of the northern Emirate Ras Al Khaimah, the regional capital of Khasab, Musandam can be easily reached by road – an incredibly picturesque and often breathtaking coastal drive.

From Khasab, there is a small harbour with a plentiful choice of traditional dhow boats and more modern cruising vessels. Sail out to the stunning rocky fjords where the Hajar Mountains that run through the length of Oman and the UAE dramatically end at the Strait of Hormuz.

Dolphin spotting is a favourite activity and in the warmer shoulder season, snorkelling and scuba diving are popular, albeit the better diving is on the eastern coast of the peninsula.

You will want an early start to fit in a full day of fun, and taking an organised day tour, they will help you with the Omani visas and border crossing process. It is possible to hire a car and do it all alone, but first-timers will no doubt appreciate a guide to take you through the Al Darah border crossing point and the formalities involved.

3. Best Dubai Day Trip: Al Ain

Dubai to Al Ain distance: approximately 130km / 1 hour 30 mins

Sitting southwest of Dubai, you will find the Oasis City of Al Ain. With deep historical roots believed to date back to the Neolithic period, this is our top-pick day trip for history lovers. Well-worth visiting spots include Al Jahili Fort, Qasr al Mawaji, Al Ain National Museum (closed indefinitely for renovations), and the Al Ain Palace Museum (the former Royal homestead – closed from Summer 2024 for renovations). 

You may also be fascinated by the supposedly healing hot springs of Al Mubazzarah, at the foot of Abu Dhabi Emirate’s tallest peak, Jebel Hafeet.

Those travelling with kids will definitely want to try and squeeze in a trip to the Al Ain Zoo too. The best in the country, the zoo is set on large grounds with many new installations worth a trip of its own, including the Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre, which is perfect for history lovers of all ages with lots of interactive displays.

You can make the trip to the historic center of Al Ain, in approximately 1.5 hours from Dubai. However, if you plan a trip up the winding road to the top of Jebel Hafeet, add another 40 minutes. You will be rewarded with spectacular views over Al Ain and neighbouring Oman.

4. Best Dubai Day Trip: Ras Al Khaimah

Dubai to Ras al Khaimah distance: approximately 110kms / 1 hour 15 minutes

Ras al Khaimah – affectionately referred to as RAK, is best known as the UAE’s outdoor adventure playground. The stunning Hajar Mountains range runs through the Emirate and is home to the country’s tallest peak, Jebel Jais.

Jebel Jais is an adrenaline junkie’s dream, with plenty of new attractions being added every year. Hatta: Where Is It, And What’s There?

There are seven emirates that form the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Hatta is part of the Dubai emirate, even though it is not located within the city’s main boundaries.

It sits close to the border of Oman, along the stunning Hajar Mountains, and is less than a two-hour drive away from Dubai. Technically, it’s an enclave as you pass through the emirate of Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah and even part of Ajman to reach the township of Hatta.

Due to its location and natural landscape, the area experiences cooler temperatures than other parts of the country.

Although it may not feel any different during the hot summer months, winters are unquestionably cooler. If trekking up the mountains or camping overnight in winter, it is advisable to pack warm jackets and sweaters.

Hatta for Adventure-Lovers

1. Hatta Wadi Hub

This is the perfect escape for adventure seekers looking for a wide range of experiences to try out. Choose from downhill carting, zorbing, a human slingshot, axe throwing, archery, free-fall jumps, adventure rope courses, wall climbing, or trampoline.

New experiences continue to get added, including an inflatable obstacle course, drop in slides and a four-wheel off-road electric scooter experience.

2. Hatta Kayak

This water sport is an unforgettable opportunity to explore the stunning lake formed by Hatta Dam. You can hire a kayak, pedal boat, or water bike as you enjoy a relaxed afternoon on the quiet waters, surrounded by jagged mountain creeks.

3. Paragliding

There’s nothing more thrilling than getting strapped in and taking in the beautiful Hatta scenery from the air. The paragliding experience will have you soaring 500 feet above Hatta’s rocky mountains. The experience is available for anyone aged above 18, while under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult.

4. Mountain Biking

Home to the Hatta Mountain Bike Trail Centre, it is the best spot to explore the rugged landscape on two wheels. With 50-kilometers of biking trails covering different terrains and distances, there’s a trail for every rider, catering to all levels of ability. You can bring your own bike or rent a mountain bike at the Hatta Wadi Hub.

5. Horseback riding

Enjoy a tranquil and memorable experience with a horseback ride at Hatta Horses. Enjoy the sights of Hatta as you trail across lakes and mountain foothills or venture into the wilderness in the company of an Arabian horse. Exploring Hatta – Nature & Culture

If adrenaline sports aren’t for you, or perhaps you’re travelling with young kids or elderly parents, there’s still plenty more to see and do in Hatta.

Hatta Sign

In the style of the iconic ‘Hollywood’ sign, the Hatta sign proudly sits atop the mountains of Hatta. Almost 60 meters tall, the sign is visible upon entry and also lights up at night. You can also take the trek from Hatta Wadi Hub to reach the sign and take some memorable photos.

Hatta Fort

Built in 1896 and fully restored in 1995, Hatta Fort is one of the most significant architectural monuments in the UAE. A residence and defence facility with a large internal courtyard and an 11m-high watchtower, it is made of mountain stones and mud bricks. The ceiling is constructed using palm fronds, trunks, and mud.

Hatta Hill Park

As the name suggests, this park is located over a mountain. Opened in 2004, it is popular with families getting together for picnics and barbecues. With a beautiful landscape and vibrant greenery, the park also includes a kid’s play area, running tracks, a sports field, and even a tower at the topmost point of the mountain, offering great vantage points of the surrounding scenery.

Entry is free and open between 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM.

Hatta Heritage Village

Take a step back in time and explore this restored traditional village that dates back 3000 years.

Imagine what life must have been like as you walk past reconstructed stone houses, overlooked by watchtowers and a fort, look through old photographs and learn about their agricultural practices and Arab culture.

Close by is a palm tree farm known as the Al Sharia site, where you can learn about the Falaj system traditionally used to irrigate farms. The falaj water system here, which dates back to the 1800s, was used to bring fresh water from the mountains and supply it to the local residents and date farms in the heart of Hatta Village.

Entry to Hatta Heritage Village is free, and operating hours are: Saturday- Thursday: 7:30 AM till 8:30 PM & Fridays: 2:30 PM till 8:30 PM

Hatta Caravan Park

This is the region’s first luxury caravan park, complete with luxurious caravans that can be rented for a short stay and comfortably accommodate a family of four. The caravan park operates only between October and April.

You have four different vans to choose from (all of which they describe as fitting a maximum of two adults and two children under 12; we’d argue they could fit more from our own experience staying there, but you’d need to make your own enquiries):

Damani Lodges Resort

Perched along low-lying mountain tops, these purpose-built lodges provide a cosy place to get close to nature. The simple lodges can sleep two adults (or a family of four if kids are under 12) and come with a private terrace to enjoy the amazing mountain views.

JA Hatta Fort

This resort has existed since the 1980s and has undergone a modern transformation to achieve its four-star status. The views of the majestic mountains against the resort’s lush lawns look impressive as you stand on your private balcony from either your room or three-bedroom chalet.

A recent addition worth noting for families are their new Terra Cabins. these have flexible floorplans including pull out beds and bunks.

There are so many activity options here, from mini-golf, petanque, and archery to air-gun shooting, a zip line, swimming pools, and even a maze.

Public Transport to Hatta

You can also reach Hatta using public transport. The RTA has launched a new service, the H02 Hatta Express, which starts at Dubai Mall Station and goes directly to Hatta Bus Station.

• The route is operated by deluxe coaches with bathrooms onboard, aircon and wifi.
• The route operates from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM with buses every 2 hours
• The journey costs AED 25 per person one-way

Whilst the scene of 4×4 crashing their way through the dunes in Dubai might be a familiar one, understandably, for many, this is not their idea of fun, nor the most environmentally-friendly approach to seeing and experiencing the Dubai desert.

Understanding that this rich desert eco system needs to be protected, the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve was established in 2003. Covering an area of 225 square kilometres (nearly 5% of the Dubai Emirate), the area was designated as the country’s first National Park.

It can certainly be confusing establishing which company to use when you see an endless list of Dubai desert tours advertised, so we have helped you here by picking out the tours on popular booking platforms Get Your Guide and Viator that are, in fact, based in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve rather than other parts of the Dubai desert.

We have not personally tested every one of these operators, so we’d be happy to hear any feedback in the comments – good or bad – you have about each of these mentioned; we can update our listing accordingly to be of most help to future visitors to Dubai.

Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve Visitor Centre

A relatively new addition to DDCR is the Visitor Centre. Accessible by standard 2WD vehicles at the entrance to the park, you can find it here:

The DDCR Visitor Centre welcomes you to learn more about the indigenous fauna and flora of the Reserve and how they are working to protect the fragile ecosystem of the UAE’s first National Park.

You are guided through interactive displays and audio presentations. Children will enjoy the interactive Arabian Hare guiding their journey, and there’s plentiful information on the native species, from mammals and reptiles to insects and birds that frequent the reserve.

Finish your journey with views of the reserve from the rooftop deck and refreshments from the on-site Costa coffee shop.

Entry cost

The walk-in entry feee for the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve Visitor Centre is:

• AED 35 adults
• AED 25 kids (5 to 18 years)
• Discounts are available for Emirates Pass holders and Emirates Platinum Cardholders

If you’re looking for a completely immersive overnight experience in the desert, these are the main providers licenced to operate within DDCR.

Al Maha A Luxury Collection Desert Resort & Spa

The most incredible Dubai desert views can be enjoyed from the tranquillity of your own private tent and infinity pool. This is not just any ordinary glamping; this is 5* and more.

Guests can enjoy the privacy of their own room; with only 42 luxury suites on the site, they are well spread out, and your privacy is assured.

Guests can also join in with communal dining at the resort restaurant, indulge in the spa or take a look at the extensive recreation program, which includes nature walks, camel treks, desert safari, horse riding, wildlife drives, archery and falconry displays.

Sonara Camp

Sonara Camp, run by Nara, offers evening desert safaris, dinner, and luxury overnight camps. The meeting point for that self-driving is at the DDCR Visitor Centre, or most visitors will use their door-to-door pickup service from the city.

The dinner experience runs from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and includes a sedate desert drive, an interactive hawk show, camel rides, soft archery, live entertainment, and a fire show. Kids can also enjoy a movie under the stars.

Those staying overnight will return to The Nest, which has unique luxury glamping tents nestled into the dunes. Each tent can accommodate a maximum of 4 guests and has eco-friendly ensuites. Overnight experiences start from AED 2650 per Nest.

They also have adaptions of their program for sunset only and dinner only – enquiries should be made directly with Nara (they’re not to be found on your normal online booking platforms so may have escaped your attention!)

Note that most of the water parks undertake their annual maintenance at some point around January/February each year and there will be temporary closures; please check these exact dates before planning your trip to Dubai around any water park action in the winter.

Aquaventure Atlantis the Palm

Arguably, the most recognised of the UAE’s water parks is Aquaventure waterpark. Part of the giant Atlantis The Palm complex, the water park is set over 42 acres and is now officially the largest water park in the world, as well as one of the world’s best parks for thrilling water slides.

Aquaventure is the perfect place for adrenaline junkies and younger families, with its separate Splashers kid zone inside the park, exclusively for kids under 1.2m, including replicas of the park’s most popular slides for young kids.

Aquaventure has an absolutely enviable position sitting on the outer frond of the Palm Jumeirah. Most famous for its thrill rides, including The Leap of Faith, and an almost vertical drop that takes you through the park’s central lagoon of stingrays and sharks.

Groups will love Aquaconda, the world’s largest tube waterslide and Zoomerango. The park opened its expansion, including Trident Tower, in March 2021 with several new record-breaking rides – learn more here!

The hard part is deciding which rides you might want to leave out rather than include! There are over 70 waterslides and rides to pick from which is what makes it Dubai’s best water park. The downside to Aquaventure can be just how busy it gets; do tackle the most popular rides as soon as you arrive as lines get LONG for the most popular; not much fun in the heat!

You can purchase an AquaXpress fast track, but this pretty much doubles the cost (presently, these are 275 AED per person).

How much does Aquaventure cost?

• Basic ticket prices for entry to Aquaventure are AED 320 for adults / AED 270 for children under 1.2m. Under 2’s free.

• If you add the Lost Chambers to your visit you’ll pay AED 370 for Adults / AED 320 for children under 1.2m. Under 2’s free.

• Their rates are advertised as “seasonal”, so they could go higher than this during peak school holiday times

• Need towels? Add another 35 AED per towel and 55 AED for a small locker

• Guests staying at Atlantis the Palm will have their park entry included

• Another way to save is to combine entry tickets to the Lost Chambers or animal experiences at Dolphin Cove (and did you know you can get in FREE for your birthday? Learn more here)

• For tourists, you’ll find Aquaventure on the Dubai Pass Theme Parks Pass only, and Go City Dubai have it on their Explorer & All-Inclusive Pass.

• Resident offers (with a valid Emirates ID card) can prove to be a significantly good value, taking 100 AED off your basic entry price.

Wild Wadi Waterpark

The Arabian-themed Wild Wadi is set on the grounds of Jumeirah Beach Hotel, with the stunning Burj Al Arab Hotel as its backdrop.

This fabulous family fun park includes Jumeirah Sceirah – the refurbed tandem slide is 120m long and reaches speeds up to 80km/hr! Other popular attractions include the country’s largest wave pool Breakers Bay, and a huge section dedicated to smaller kids and toddlers, making it the perfect place for mixed groups catering to smaller kids and teens (or the young at heart!)

Wild Wadi has undergone an extensive closures over the past year. The water park did briefly reopen to both hotel guests and the public in summer 2023, but when trying to update pricing for 2024 we see it is again ‘Temporarily Closed’. It reopened agian on 3 February 2024.

What does Wild Wadi cost?

• Guests staying in any of the nearby Jumeirah Hotels (Including Jumeriah Beach Hotel, or neighbouring properties including Jumeirah al Naseem, Jumeirah Mina A’Salam and Jumeirah Al Qasr) have their entry ticket to Wild Wadi included. 

• Standard online adult prices start from 295 AED / Children 245 AED (you pay more at the gate – but book online either directly or through a reputable online ticker reseller, this is the base rate you’ll pay).

• You can upgrade this to an all-you-can-eat day pass for 370 AED / 305 AED.

• Pricing is differentiated on your child being over or under 1.1m tall, not by age (there are several rides they will be restricted from under 1.1m); infants under 3 are always free.

• UAE Residents (with valid Emirates ID cards) can get further discounts, reducing the price to as little as 195 AED / 1175 AED (and bring nannies for free!). Add an all-you-can-eat deal, the price is 270 ED/230 AED. (Valid dates apply to this offer, and weekdays are cheaper than weekends or paying at the counter).

• Also, look out for their Birthday complimentary entry offer (need two other paying residents in your group), and Visa cardholder Mondays for really good pricing (until 31 Dec 2022).

• Towels are 39 AED to rent, and lockers start from 39 AED at Souk Al Wadi

• You will find Wild Wadi on the Dubai Pass by iVenture in Pool A, and also on the Dubai Theme Parks pass.

Laguna Water Park

In March 2023 Laguna in La Mer closed temporaily for Ramadan but updated their website in April to state that the park has permanently closed, it seems as part of an entire redevelopment of the La Mer beachfront.

Stay tuned, as we believe the new J1 Beach might incorporate elements of the previous Laguna Water Park, but we have no further details to share at this stage.

Legoland Dubai Water Park

Aimed at the younger crowd specifically but suitable for the whole family, Legoland Dubai Water Park is at the more sedate end of the water park scale but still packs in plenty of rides at a pretty reasonable price tag.

Legoland waterpark is great for your little children wanting to build up their confidence with water park thrills and spills. The Joker Soaker is a good water fun starting point (beware the freezing water though!), then advance to Build a Raft Lazy River and on to the wave pool (tame by most standards) before graduating to the slide rides.

What Does Legoland Dubai Water Park Cost?

• Advance purchase online price is 295 AED (applicable to all aged three and over, there are no separate child tickets), at the gate or same day, you’ll pay 330 AED.

• It is the best value to combine a ticket to Legoland Dubai Water Park with either neighbouring Legoland Dubai (you can walk between the two), or the other Dubai Parks and Resorts theme parks Motiongate and Bollywood. The headline price for a 2 park pass is 355 AED, though deals can be found!

• Guest staying at Lapita Resort or the onsite Legoland Hotel Dubai can also get combined stay-and-play packages.

• You’ll find Legoland Water Park on the Dubai Theme Parks Pass by Dubai Pass – iVenture, and on both the Explorer and All-inclusive Go City Dubai

Best Water Parks Outside of Dubai

There are a couple of great contenders for Dubai’s best water park that actually sit outside of Dubai Emirate but can be easily reached on a day trip; Yas Waterworld in Abu Dhabi and Dreamland Aqua Park in Umm al Quwain.

There used to be another contender, Iceland, in Ras al Khaimah. This park suddenly and unexpectedly closed in 2018, though we believe something bigger and better will replace Iceland in due course – watch this space (6 years later and no news!)

Yas Waterworld – Abu Dhabi

OK, we are a little biased, but we actually think Yas Waterworld is EVEN BETTER than the water parks in Dubai – bold claim!

Winner of multiple travel awards across the Middle East region – and the world – this Emirati-themed water park has 45 rides and attractions to choose from, catering to all ages. (And they’ll be expanding even further in 2025).

From adrenaline-pumping slides through to the classic Al Raha lazy river, wave pool, and the Bandit Bomber suspended roller coaster, you will find a huge variety here, as well as live shows and entertainment around the park all day.

Smaller children are very well catered to, with three dedicated splash areas varying from tiny infants to toddler slides and the crowd’s favourite tipping bucket.  Yas Waterworld also offers a unique pearl diving experience and mermaid school.

Under 3’s are free (great value considering there are several slides and areas they can actually independently enjoy). 

The great thing about visiting Yas Waterworld, or any of the Yas Island theme parks from Dubai, is they will throw in free transfers from Dubai! Yes, you heard right – check out more details on how to get to Yas Island here. It is around a one-hour journey, depending on where you set off from in Dubai.

You can also get great overnight packages with hotels on Yas Island that combine park tickets with a hotel stay. Alternatively, look out for Combo ticket options with neighbouring parks Warner Bros World and Ferrari World.

There are numerous hotels now on Yas Island with easy shuttle services to all the theme parks; we’d recommend the new Hilton on Yas Bay for the best all-around entertainment access, pool and facilities.

Dreamland Aqua Park

Umm al Quwain is certainly a unique twist outside of Dubai, and Dreamland Aqua Park is no exception! It is good old-fashioned water park fun severely trapped in the 1980s, but you will have a blast! We have included this as our value pick for travellers to Dubai on a budget.

It is certainly one of the lushest and most chilled-out waterparks in Dubai without the massive queues. There’s even a beer garden with a swim-up bar, lawned areas to relax and overnight camping options at the park – the only one of its type in the United Arab Emirates.

You will find Dreamland in Umm Al Quwain (UAQ), about one hour to the northeast of Dubai. Just be warned, it can be chilly in the cooler months. We don’t think they’ve ever thought to heat the water, but it’s perfect for those hot spring and autumn days.

Perfect for younger children simply seeking an opportunity to cool off, we can also recommend our favourite splash pads across the city for families:

• XPark Jr Splash Area – nearby to Kite Beach, you will find this gorgeous little adventure playground with little streams and splash areas, perfect for when you want the kids to play and splash around but perhaps not get utterly drenched! • Al Barari Playground – A gorgeous little adventure playground nestles in the suburbs between Ashjar and Seventh Heaven, Al Barari. What to pack for a day at Dubai’s water parks

No matter the time of year, don’t forget a few water park essentials

• Water shoes – believe us when we say the ground can get HOT!! Not all surfaces are slip and heat-resistant in Dubai’s water parks; we strongly recommend you pack something like aqua socks or Slipfree water shoes

• Sunscreen! – Even if it’s not the peak of summer, it’s always a sensible suggestion. We are big fans of Sun Bum Reef Friendly lotion.

• Towels – you can bring these yourself to save a few dirhams, but all the big parks will also rent your towels to save some space in your bag. If you’re staying at the hotels, they’re included.

• Appropriate swimwear – whilst it’s not illegal to wear a bikini at a water park in Dubai, think sensibly too. There are other families about, a huge mix of cultures and let’s be honest, if you’re powering down a slide, you don’t want any unfortunate accidents at the end. Everyone is recommended to wear a rash guard for sun protection and neoprene-style swimwear. Cotton boardshorts that look like streetwear are forbidden. • Waterproof camera – capture the fun with your own waterproof action camera or get a suitable waterproof case to keep your smartphone in.

To the south of Dubai, you will come to the mountainous region of Hatta. Much improvement has gone into this area in the last few years to make this an incredible nature playground with a huge range of water sports, hikes, and mountain biking on offer.

Al Barari Playground

This stunning nature spot in Dubai has gone from a hidden gem to a local favourite. Known for its adventure playground and relaxed setting, kids can enjoy water play to climbing, giant swings to pirate ships, even exploring the veggie patch, and all in the lush setting of luxury estate Al Barari.

Parents love the Hideout Lounge, where you can enjoy a beverage while the kids play. Plus, there are ice creams, burgers, and shawarma on hand if you want to grab a bite. Pre-booking for this luxury nature play park is essential, especially on weekends.

• Entrance: Paid weekdays 25 AED for 2 hours/weekends 35 AED (kids under 90cm free)

Al Barsha Park

A beautifully manicured 52-acre park set around a large man-made pond. You can hire pedal or solar-powered boats on the water, as well as pedal Go-Karts, bikes, and e-scooters for exercise around the park.

There are two park areas, suitable for toddlers and your older children, as well as plenty of grassy spaces for picnicking and a running track.

• Facilities: Park House Café kiosk and toilets
• Opening times: 6.00 am to 11.00 pm daily

Al Ittihad Park

Found on the trunk of Palm Jumeirah, this is a long park that appears under a 3.2km stretch of the Palm Monorail. A great path for strollers and scooters, the park is spotted with playgrounds and water features, as well as fitness equipment, shops, and cafes you can stop at along the way. You may also hear this one referred to as Palm Jumeirah Park.

• Facilities: Toilets, shops, and restaurants along the way
• Opening times: 24 hours

Al Khazzan Park

Centrally located opposite Dubai’s City Walk, the distinctive blue and white striped water tower is easy to pick out in this urban park.  There are two shaded play areas with swings, slides, and climbing frames for both toddlers and older children. A good spot for bringing your own picnic; look out for the small little children’s library here too.

• Opening times: 8.00 am to 10.00 pm Saturday to Wednesday & 8.00 am to 11.00 pm Thursday and Friday

Al Sufouh Park

Located in a quiet suburban area of the city between Hessa Street and Al Sufouh Road, you will find two children’s play park areas in this cosy little park. It’s better for your younger kids, but also includes a running track, sports courts, and a small coffee shop.

• Facilities: Toilets, sports facilities, coffee shop
• Opening times: 8.00 am to 10.00 pm Saturday to Wednesday & 8.00 am to 11.00 pm Thursday and Friday

Al Wasl Park

Another small suburban hidden gem just off Wasl Road, Jumeirah 1. It is not huge, but enough space to unleash the kids on scooters and bikes as well as have a play in the partly shaded playground.

• Opening times: 8.00 am to 11.00 pm

Bay Avenue Park

Bringing a touch of green to the otherwise concrete jungle of the Business Bay Area, the Bay Avenue Park includes two outdoor gyms, a skatepark, a trampoline area, and plenty of grassy spots where you can pull up a picnic rug, as well as obligatory playground equipment, mostly under shade.

A nearby Spinneys supermarket is perfect for picking up a bite to eat, and the park often hosts a farmers market and yoga in the park.

• Opening times: 24 hours

Dubai Creek Park

Situated on the western bank of Dubai Creek, this is one of the city’s larger outdoor spaces with plenty of extra facilities and entertainment to enjoy. It’s a popular spot for picnics and barbeques, as well as having a large botanical garden, mini-golf and a go-kart track. There are several children’s playgrounds dotted around the park.

For added extras within the park, check out the Dolphinarium and Children’s City, an edutainment and learning centre including Planetarium. In the winter, the Creek Cable Cars run daily across the park (summertime evenings only).

Dubai Garden Glow & Dinosaur Park

A seasonal event held within Zabeel Park in the winter months, watch dinosaurs roar to life and the park light up each night with colourful neon creations.

A pricier evening than most of our parks, but definitely fun for a special treat and one of the top park experiences we recommend to our visitors. The dinosaurs are very realistic, so watch for long kids who may be scared.

• Entrance: 65 AED (under 3’s free)
• Facilities: Toilets, dining
• Opening times: Saturday to Thursday, 4.00 pm to 11.00 pm, Friday, 4.00 pm to 12 midnight

Dubai Hills Park

One of Dubai’s most incredible new community parks, you’ll find this modern, multi-use park inside Dubai Hills Estate. With 1800 trees, it brings a refreshing splash of green to the suburbs; open to all, you’ll find a huge variety of play parks and sports courts to suit all different age groups.

• Entrance: Free
• Facilities: Splash park, skate park, ice rink, dog park, sports courts, playgrounds, restrooms
• Opening times: 24 hours

Dubai Miracle Garden

The largest flower garden in the world by the total number of blooms sits just outside of the city. Follow a magical maze of pathways between floral and topiary creations, larger-than-life cartoon characters, creatures, and famous sites turned into floral arrangements. The centrepiece of the park is an incredible floral A380 Emirates aircraft.

The garden has plenty of eateries, beautiful swings, and play spaces, as well as relaxing swings. Enjoy some lovely family snaps, though do get there early to beat the crowds and heat.

• Entrance: 75 AED, kids 60 AED (under 3’s free)
• Facilities: Toilets, restaurants
• Opening times: (October to April) 9.00 am to 9.00 pm

Jaddaf Waterfront

One of the newer entrants on our list of exciting parks in Dubai, this park is part of the Manazel Al Khor waterfront complex on Dubai Creek, which includes the Jameel Arts Centre. Its claim to fame is as Dubai’s first open-air art park, including the Jaddaf Waterfront Sculpture Park and interactive experiences for kids to enjoy.

Check out the “green wall” and the playground area for younger ones. The park includes tables with board games such as chess and an amphitheatre for film screenings and live performances.

• Facilities: Toilets, eateries, amphitheatre, board
• Opening times: 24 hours

JLT Park

This is a great little patch of green for the Jumeirah Lake Towers community to explore amongst the urban jungle between clusters O and P. There are three different shaded playground zones for different age groups, as well as a large spider web climbing frame and zip line.

Plenty of grassy areas to enjoy, and in the cooler months, you will find food, music and open-air cinema amongst a packed entertainment lineup.

JLT Dog Park

Got a 4 legged friend? Then this is the one for you. Located in Cluster H, the JLT Dog park provides a safe space where highrise-dwelling residents in Jumeirah Lake Towers can safely head with their pets for some off-leash fun and exercise, including a sandpit, open green spaces, and seating.

• Opening times: 6.00 am to 9.00 pm (closed for cleaning from 3.00 pm to 4.00 pm)

Jumeirah Beach Park

Another of Dubai’s recently redeveloped parks, beautifully manicured gardens meet the beachfront in the Jumeirah area of the city. There are plentiful spots to pull up for a picnic, as well as barbeque facilities and children’s playgrounds.

• Facilities: Toilets, barbeques, food kiosks,

Love Lake Dubai

One of Dubai’s more unique parks, you will actually find this beautiful spot of Dubai buried deep in the desert! Well worth the drive, you will be rewarded with a lovely walking/running track that circumnavigates the man-made Love Lakes in Al Qudra, Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve.

Pack a picnic or use the designated BBQ spots. Snap away at the park’s many insta-worthy features and enjoy the tranquillity of this eco-spot.

Mamzar Beach Park

This beautiful beach park in Dubai is located on the Deira side of Dubai Creek. As well as swimming and water sports, a large green park is attached with everything from kids’ play equipment to picnicking spaces and jogging tracks.

Lifeguards are on duty as well as change facilitates, and small chalets can be rented on a daily basis.

• Entrance: 5 AED per person or 30 AED per car (Swimming pool 10 AED adult/5 AED child)
• Facilities: Chalets for rent, swimming pool, sports courts, barbequing, restaurants, toilets

Mushrif Park

One of the city’s oldest nature parks, you are in for quite a different experience from the normally perfectly manicured city parks. Busy on winter weekends, this is one of the best parks in Dubai for family gatherings and barbeques.

You will find a huge range of facilities from bike tracks to sports fields, camel and horse riding, a model house display village, a children’s games area, playgrounds, restaurants, and even a miniature train service. There are also public swimming pools for men, women and children (additional charge) and Aventura Parks, a ziplining course through the Ghaf forest.

• Entrance: 3 AED per person or 10 AED per car
• Facilities: toilets, restaurants, sports fields, bike track
• Opening times: Sunday to Wednesday, 8.00 am to 10.00 pm, Thursday to Saturday, 8.00 am to 11.00 pm

Nad al Sheba Cycle Park

A park dedicated to cyclists and fitness enthusiasts, you will find Nad al Sheba Cycle Park adjacent to Meydan Race Course (a converted camel racing track!). There are 4km, 6km, and 8km circuits suitable for beginners through to pros in this lush green spot. There is also a special track for younger children to teach them about road safety.

• Facilities: toilets and change rooms
• Opening times: 24 hours

Quranic Park

This beautiful new park in the Al Khawaneej area of the city is dedicated to the Holy Quran. Covering 60 acres, the park is open to all faiths, although do note it’s a family park, and you should be appropriately dressed.

Inside, you’ll find the Lake, the Orchards, and the Cave of Miracles – with interactive displays (in Arabic). Then, there is a glasshouse that displays plants mentioned in the Holy Quran. There are also play parks and food carts inside.

• Entrance: Free (additional 5 AED each for Glass House and Cave of Miracles)
• Facilities: Toilets, shaded seating and play areas
• Opening times: Saturday to Thursday, 8.00 am to 10.00 pm. Friday’s 3.00 pm to 10.00 pm

Safa Park 2

Another of Dubai’s wonderful little community park, it can be found just off Al Manara Street. The park has three different play areas with lots of shade for picnics, a small food kiosk and toilets. It is fairly quiet during the week and spring to life full of families on weekends.

• Facilities: Toilets, cafeterias, theatre, track and field courts

The Block

A sensational new outdoor space on the waterfront of Dubai Creek. With a little something for everyone, The Block is part of Dubai Design District D3 Park. It features a skate park, basketball and volleyball courts, climbing walls, and traditional play equipment.

You have a great selection of restaurants and cafes nearby in the Design Quarter, so a superb one for grabbing a cuppa and pulling up a seat while the kids play.

Umm Suqeim Park

(Also commonly referred to as Burj Beach Park). Situated close to Sunset Beach, this beautifully landscaped park is the perfect urban family escape, popular with locals and expats alike. During the week, it is women only, and at weekends men can visit with family.

There is a playground suitable for slightly older children, as well as a cafe and toilets within the grounds.

• Entrance: Nominal charge
• Facilities: Toilets, small café
• Opening times: 8:00 am to 10:00 pm. Ladies and children during the week, fathers permitted as well on weekends.

Zabeel Park

Home to Dubai Garden Glow & Dinosaur Park, as we have already mentioned above, this 52-acre park also has expansive walking paths, barbeques, children’s playgrounds, and shaded areas to enjoy.

There are plentiful additional family entertainment options, including boats to hire on the ornamental lake, bikes to hire, and restaurants.

Located on Sir Bani Yas Island, to the west of Abu Dhabi, you take the E11 from Dubai, continue past Abu Dhabi city, and turn off at Ruwais for the Jebel Dhanna Jetty. This journey takes about 3 hours. Swim up close and personal with Tiger Sharks, Reef Sharks, Leopard Sharks, Tawny Nurse Sharks, Giant Groupers and Stingrays as you embark on a Shark Dive.

Certified divers and Non-certified divers after completing a short Discover Scuba program with Al Boom Diving, can enjoy the thrill of this aquatic experience under the supervision of a Dive Master and a Dive Instructor. Prices for Shark Dives start from AED 790.

If you are looking for a scuba diving experience, but without the diving equipment and experience, try Cage Snorkelling. Simply put on a snorkelling gear, and feel the same thrills of getting close to sharks and rays in a safe cage setting. Participants need to be at least 8 years and older for this activity, starting from AED 370.

The Speciality Dives offers PADI certified visitors access to a three-dive initiative where you get the opportunity to dive with the sharks while learning more about Shark conservation, Shark feeding and underwater photography. This once-in-a-lifetime diving experience starts at AED 2,100.

The iconic water resort, Atlantis The Palm is a one-stop entertainment destination with extraordinary experiences for marine lovers. If scuba diving has been on your bucket list for a while, this is the perfect destination to tick it off, with packages available for beginners as well as professionals.

Atlantis Aquarium offers experiences for underwater walking, snorkelling and diving, and you don’t need to be a certified diver for these experiences. A wet suit, towel, water bottles and complimentary same-day access to The Lost Chambers Aquarium is also included.

The Atlantis Dive Discovery is a perfect way to experience the thrill of scuba diving for beginners as you explore the lost city of Atlantis. Available for non-certified divers aged 10 and over, divers can learn about the basics of scuba diving while swimming amongst the 6,500 fascinating sea creatures. This latest attraction is a world-record-breaking 60-meter deep pool, offering thrill-seekers to dive and discover an underwater world filled with adventure and wonder. With 14 million litres of fresh water kept at a constant 30 degrees, perfect diving conditions are guaranteed all year round, as you explore an abandoned sunken city with themed sections.

Deep Dive Dubai welcomes certified as well as non-certified divers. Beginners can explore up to 12 meters with scuba diving equipment. The Basic package includes all diving equipment and a guided experience with an instructor priced at AED 1,800. Premium Discovery is for AED 2,400 and Platinum Discovery is for AED 3,000.

Certified divers can explore Deep Dive Dubai allowed by your certification with open water divers to 20m and advanced to 30m, for AED 1,200, and trimix-trained technical divers up to 60m, for AED 1,500.

If you are a beginner and new to diving, there are various small sites around Jumeirah Beach offering you the opportunity to explore the waters and experience the vibrant aquatic life typical to the Arabian Gulf.

Bermuda Diving Centre offers a Beginner scuba diving experience, complete with full diving equipment, 30-minute training, followed by scuba diving with an instructor and underwater fish feeding, for AED 299.

Zainab Shipwreck

Being one of the most popular shipwrecks to dive in Dubai, Zainab is a 1969-built vessel that sank in April 2001, just off the coast of Dubai. Currently lying at 30m on a flat sandy bottom, this shipwreck is a suitable diving spot for advanced divers.

The wreck is quite big and best explored over two dives. The marine life you can spot here includes oysters, small fishes and schools of yellowtail barracuda. This shipwreck is a 40-minute boat journey from shore, and a perfect spot to learn some interesting history.

Mariam Express

A commercial ship carrying transport cargo that sank off the coast of Dubai in 2006 due to rough seas, now offers two dive sites for advanced divers. Lying at a depth of 18 to 25 metres, it is a spectacular wreckage site to explore. It is also an artificial habitat for aquatic species, such as the yellowtail barracuda, spotted eagle, torpedo rays, and a wide variety of nudibranch and flatworms.

MV Dara

A dive site list would be incomplete without the mention of this site. MV Dara was a Dubai based passenger ship that sunk in 1961. Victim to an unfortunate fire accident on board, this ship sank 3 miles off Dubai, and now lies 5 to 17 metres deep. This site now serves as a monument to tell an interesting story.

Sheikh Mohamad’s Barge

Interestingly, this was a McDermott derrick barge that was purposely sunk off the coast of Dubai in 1984 to encourage the growth of corals and other marine life, and help create an artificial reef.

The SMB lies 18 to 23 metres deep, and is upside down on a flat sandy bottom. There is a lot to see at this site, which includes cranes and vehicles, but also an abundance of aquatic life typically seen in the Arabian Gulf, making this easily one of the best diving sites of Dubai.

Day Trip to Fujairah: Sharm Rock and Dibba Rock

Sharm Rock, also known as Three Rocks, located near a small fishing village in Fujairah offers a perfect diving site, even for entry-level divers.

At manageable depths of 5 to 13 metres, this natural aquarium is a diving opportunity for spotting plenty of marine life which includes various fish species and schools of bannerfish, parrotfish and puffers. If you are likely you may also spot cuttlefish, turtles and friendly jawfish.

Dibba Rock is a marine-protected site close to the shores of Fujairah. Surrounded by corals on all sides, it is well known for its green turtles, devil rays, blacktip reef sharks, and a variety of reef fish such as parrotfish, porcupine fish, lionfish, and pufferfish.

This dive site goes down to 14m, but with sloping rocks, you can easily stay in shallow depths too, making it perfect for new divers.

When should you book a Desert Safari for – Morning, Afternoon or Overnight safari?

Whether to spend just a few hours in the desert or stay overnight is really up to you as there are a variety of options on offer. Afternoon desert safaris tend to take off after the heat of the day has gone, whereas morning safaris have a greater focus on the desert itself than on entertainment. 

You may prefer a morning desert safari if you’re on a tight schedule and already have an action-packed evening in the city. Families may also find mornings preferable to late nights with small children; you will find once your transport has you back in town, it can be close to 10-11:00 PM.

If you have time within your schedule, an overnight stay in the desert is highly recommended as you get to see the desert in all of its glory, at sunset and sunrise; it also gives you a greater chance of encountering wildlife as the creatures of the desert are more active during twilight and nighttime hours.

Overnight safaris in Dubai also give you the opportunity to stargaze over the unpolluted night skies. If camping isn’t quite your thing we can also recommend several Dubai glamping sites, including those offering coveted dome tents to see the desert in all its glory.

What activities do you do on a Dubai Desert Safari?

Each of the desert safaris we will list below has a slightly different agenda and activities on offer, but generally speaking, these are the sorts of experiences and cultural and sporting opportunities you can enjoy on a Dubai desert safari.

Hotel pick-ups

All of the desert safaris we recommend below include a hotel pick up and drop back service in Dubai so it’s all door-to-door service in an airconditioned vehicle.

Depending on what sort of tour you have booked (and prevailing COVID rules at the time of your visit), this may be a shared vehicle with other tour participants, or your group could have a vehicle to themselves, up to 7 passengers.

Experience the thrills of dune bashing

Not for the faint-hearted, dune bashing – literally driving up and down sand dunes at speed – is something that many desert safaris offer as part of their itinerary.

Is dune bashing safe? Dune bashing is usually done in specially adapted four-wheel-drive vehicles fitted with seat belts. Drivers are usually highly skilled, trained, and stick to designated routes through the desert – if you book with a reputable company.

Dune bashing is not recommended for pregnant women, children, or anyone with any sort of medical problem. If you suffer from motion sickness we recommend you look for tours where this part of the day’s entertainment can be avoided.

Surf the great sand sea on a sandboard

Grab your board and let the dunes take you! Sandboarding is an extreme sport similar to snowboarding and does demand some skill as well as a good sense of balance – but there’s certainly no harm for amateurs to give it a shot! Participants can stand, sit or lie on their boards and move across or directly down the dunes.

Closed-toed trainers and socks are recommended for this activity.

Speed across the desert on a quad bike or dune buggy

Another way to get to grips with the desert is by quad bike or dune buggy. Some packages include this, in fact, some tours specialise in desert dune buggy tours. Others, you may find this is an added extra you are offered once you arrive at camp.

Remember to check your itinerary closely before booking if this is something that you really want to do as it’s not an automatic inclusion.

Make sure you’re dressed appropriately – cotton trousers or jeans recommended as well as closed-toe shoes and something to tie back long hair.

Have a henna tattoo

Henna tattoos have been worn by the woman of the region for centuries and are offered to visitors at most desert camps and on many desert safaris. Tattoos are traditionally painted on the hands, arms, and feet of brides and are thought to bring good fortune.

In the past, designs would differ from tribe to tribe but nowadays henna artists usually carry a portfolio of designs for customers to choose from. The henna will last about two weeks before fading – always a fun souvenir of your time in Abu Dhabi.

Not recommended for sensitive skin or people with G6PD deficiency.

Enjoy a Camel Ride

Riding into the desert sunset on a camel is a dream for many whilst for others it can be a complete nightmare! Just remember to follow your guide’s instructions and lean backwards when the camel stands up or sits down to avoid any injuries.

Most desert safaris offer short camel treks of 10-20 minutes as well as longer treks for the more adventurous often for an additional fee.

Camel riding is not for everyone and is not recommended for pregnant women or people with serious musculoskeletal injuries as well as very young children.

You are bound to get plenty of opportunities to interact with the camels and take some photos even if you’re not too keen on taking a ride.

Indulge in some belly dancing

Some camps and desert safaris offer belly dancing as entertainment. Belly dancing has its origins in ancient Egypt but was practised widely throughout the Middle East until the rise of Islam.

Nowadays, belly dancing is performed for tourists in the UAE but many conservative Muslims still consider it haram (against the teachings of Islam).

Be mesmerized by a Tanoura Dance

Sometimes as an alternative to belly dancing and sometimes to complement it, a captivating tanoura dance might be offered. Another dance originating in Egypt, tanoura gets its name from the characteristic skirt worn by the dancer. Dancers are rather uniquely, always male, and spin around allowing for their elaborate skirts to extend outwards like a hypnotic parachute.

Note that if you book your safari to coincide with a religious holiday, including the holy month of Ramadan, no entertainment will be provided.

Smoke shisha

Many visitors to the Middle East like to try smoking shisha and a desert safari is one place where you can do this in the unique setting under desert stars.

Even if not a regular smoker, it’s worth giving it a try for the cultural experience. Whilst shisha does contain fewer chemicals than cigars and cigarettes, it still has its health hazards if smoked regularly.

Let your taste buds be tantalized by an Arabic BBQ

Many desert safaris include what is known as an Arabic barbecue meal. The barbecue often contains a selection of delicious meze-style starters such as hummus (chickpea dip), moutabal (aubergine dip), fattoush salad (lettuce, cucumber, tomato, radishes, onion, pomegranate, and molasses), olives, mixed pickles, and Arabic bread.

Main dishes at an Arabic BBQ include various grilled meats and kebabs; this often includes the very popular ‘shish tawook’ (chicken marinated in garlic sauce and grilled on skewers). Sitting around the campfire, talking about the day’s activities whilst indulging in this tasty feast is the perfect way to end the day.

Note that some camps and safaris will provide alcohol at an additional cost, but this is obviously not part of the traditional Arabic meal.

What to expect: This is a very popular evening safari is run by OceanAir Travels and is the most booked in Dubai with good reason. Your 4WD pickup service will collect you from your hotel in Dubai between 3:00 to 4:00 PM and drive you to your desert location starting point.

Once you leave the highway, your driver pulls over to let the air out of the tires before you hit the dunes. Your dune bashing experience lasts around 45 minutes, before all the drivers congregate at the best sunset spot – truly one of the most magical moments on your trip to Dubai.

Next, you’ll be driven to Al Khayma Camp. It is one of the largest desert safari camps in Dubai. For this reason, it’s not very “personalised” and intimate; you are part of a much larger group once all the cars join together, but it’s very well set up, with clean bathrooms etc available.

Expect a buffet-style BBQ dinner with a range of local and international choices, there will be vegetarian options available too.

NB alcohol will not be included but is available as a paid extra – this applies at pretty much all camps offering beverages will only be water and soft drinks included.

You’ll spend around two to three hours at the camp where its possible to then take a short camel trek (don’t worry, this can be more than enough for most newcomers!), plus if you’ve chosen any added extras like quad biking this takes place from the camp, as well as sandboarding on the soft rolling dunes nearby.

They’ll give you some shisha to try, but if you’d like to experiment and try more flavours, this will cost you extra. Likewise, you can get a small henna design, or pay more if you’d like something more extensive.

TOP TIP: A lot of people go straight for the camel rides at dusk, but it can mean a long line. We’d recommend eating first, then the line will be shorter for the food and the camels!

What to expect: Instead of the regular Land Cruisers, you’ll get to ride in an open-roof 1950s Vintage Land Rover through the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve.

To hit the real dunes you’ll want a 4WD and experienced travellers with you and camp overnight.

• How many passengers will be in your group (nobody wants to be the 4:30 AM pick up but then spend an hour picking up passengers all over the city – one good side benefit of social distancing rules and reduced group sizes)

• Inclusion of sports and extra activities – some will merely provide the vehicle then you pay extra for dune buggies, sand boards etc., this is usually where the biggest price differential comes in.

Another opportunity to enjoy the desert at dawn is to camp overnight in the Dubai Desert. This is a fun local hobby with expats & residents but a little harder to do if you’re a visitor don’t have the right gear with you. There are an increasing number of camps offering to now extend their evening camps into overnight services – though be warned it can be rustic!

What to bring on a morning desert safari in Dubai

Regardless of what time of year you are visiting Dubai, you will want to be appropriately equipped with the right attire to get the most out of your Dubai Desert Safari.

• Pack warm layers for the early start, but be prepared how quickly things can heat up
• Pack sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen for when the sun comes up
• A headscarf or hair tie is always recommended for ladies with long hair
• We recommend closed shoes with socks over sandals or flip flops – sand will still get everywhere but years of experience has taught us its more comfortable to shake out your trainers!
• Drink plenty of water

Are there any disadvantages to a morning safari?

It really depends on what you’ve come looking for. Adverse weather can affect a morning desert safari in Dubai as there can be low-lying fog, particularly as the seasons change but more so in the mid-winter. On some of the worst days, this can reduce your visibility to a point where trips may need to be cancelled. This fog normally burns off by mid-morning.

Do be cautious of the time the tour actually sets out. Whilst it may be cool in the morning, by lunchtime it can be roasting. Late mornings are only really appropriate to be in the desert during winter (around November to March).

And, of course, a morning tour means you miss the sunset – but conversely, pick a dawn tour and you should be able to experience the magic of sunrise in the desert.

There are plenty of ways to integrate this exciting experience into your Dubai itinerary.

Camel Rides in Dubai City

The best places to catch a Dubai camel ride in the city is at The Beach, JBR (Jumeirah Beach Residences).

Here on the beachfront with the Ain Dubai Observation Wheel and Palm Jumeirah lining the skyline you can catch a camel ride for 50 AED per person, plus AED 25 to have your photo taken.

There are certainly cheaper ways, but this is the most accessible for tourists on a tight timeframe. No pre-booking simply speak to the staff on the beach, you won’t miss the brightly decorated and very well kept ships of the desert.

Camel Rides on a Dubai desert safari

One of the easiest and most scenic ways to enjoy a camel ride is to take a desert safari with many of the city’s reputable tour providers.

There are a lot of desert safari tour company’s to choose from and don’t be surprised if the camel ride only lasts all of 5 minutes but it will be enough to take your photo and tick this experience off the list.

Your typical Dubai desert safari experience will involve being picked up from your city hotel by 4×4, followed by an adrenaline-pumping dune bashing ride through the desert dunes to your “camp”.

Here, a variety of desert sports will be offered from sand biking to quad bikes and dune buggies (depending on the tour) then an iconic sunset camel ride, followed by traditional tented dinner and entertainment. Most will return you to your Dubai hotel that night, or there are overnight options.

Dubai desert tours with longer camel rides

One of the best around is the Camel Desert Safari with Platinum Heritage. Operating from the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, you will trek through the dunes for approximately 45 minutes before being treated to a sundown falconry show and enjoy an evening Bedouin meal and entertainment.

Not just the camel ride, this experience will give you some in-depth commentary around the desert flora and fauna and unforgettable Bedouin hospitality.

The Camel Farm

Another truly unique and fairly new camel experience now open to the public is The Camel Farm. Located in the Al Qudra Lakes/Al Marmoom area of Dubai just outside of the city on the E77, here you can have many hands-on camel experiences for a small fee. General Admission is 40 AED, whilst you can add 15 AED for a short camel ride or a longer desert trek for 100AED.

Those not wanting to take on all the other elements usually involved in a desert safari (such as dune bashing and quad biking), this is the much more sedate and camel-focused activity for you to choose. You can even receive camel hug therapy or feed baby goats!

Watching camels race in Dubai

If you prefer to see your four-legged friends in action from afar, then you can enjoy seeing them either in racing action or being put through their training strides at Al Marmoom Racetrack.

Located next to the Al Marmoom Heritage Village in the Al Lisaili area, this will get you into the heart of the action and enjoying a traditional Emirati pastime side-by-side with the locals.

Bring some binoculars and an open mind as you watch electronically controlled jockeys pound their way around the track, followed by a thundering stampeded of 4×4’s cheering their charges on.

An early start is needed, most action kicks of around 7:00 am and finishes by 9:00 am. If you come early, you may also get the opportunity to pet the camels and take some photos before they compete, curious tourists are made welcome!

Camel Beauty Pageant in the UAE

For something truly unique, try the Al Dhafra Festival. This is the absolute trip of a lifetime and an amazing cultural experience. As well as many traditional Bedouin events from Saluki racing to falconry – even sheep milking and date packing – the centrepiece event is the Camel Mazayna – a beauty contest for camels. Prize money is big and it’s taken very seriously.

Al Ain Camel Market

Last but not least, if you’re prepared for a bit of a road trip, one of the most colourful and unique experiences to get on your UAE itinerary is a day trip to Al Ain, including the Al Ain Camel markets.

This is a live-action market so nothing is put on for the tourists here, just be prepared for the sights, sounds and smells of this fabulously vibrant place, and no doubt some very willing self-appointed guides, happy to show you around (for a fee!).

A note on Camel Rides and Kids

Camel rides are only recommended for children at least 5 years old and above. The way the camel needs to get up and down on its forelegs can be quite terrifying for small children (and big ones!). Longer rides are generally only recommended for kids 10-years+.

If you are placing a small child on a camel with an adult, they may prefer to be passed down to another grown up before the camel bends down to make it a slightly less terrifying experience for everyone!

This is a hands-on and active experience and one of our favourite hidden gems in Dubai. It is particularly great for families with adventure-seeking kids and teens looking for unique ways to explore Dubai away from the usual soft plays and indoor centres.

The floodlit course makes it an ideal evening activity to enjoy even in Dubai’s hottest months.

NB – entrance closes 2 hours before closing time to allow participants enough time to complete the course.

Do allow yourself enough time from entering Mushrif Park to get into Aventura Park – say 20-30 minutes before your allotted time to park, confirm ticketing and take bathroom breaks. The first 30 minutes of your allotted session is used for harnessing up and a safety briefing before you hit the ropes for the next 2.5 hours.

As mentioned, Aventura Parks is located inside Mushrif Park, Gate 1. It sits south of Mirdiff City Centre and the Dubai International Airport. You will easily find Aventura Parks on Google map and signposted within the park.

What to expect at Aventura Park Dubai

There are five different courses to try at Aventura, split out by age groups and skill levels, as well as individual one-off challenges to complete and a nature trail and mini kids section for those under the age/height limit.

Your Aventura experience starts with being strapped into a safety harness then attending a 30-minute safety briefing and training session where you will have all your fancy climbing equipment explained to you and try out your gear on a small low ropes course.

Each course will take you approximately 30 minutes to complete – give or take fitness levels and if you get stuck behind a slower going group.

The main obstacle courses at Aventura explained

When you enter the park you would have been issued with a coloured wrist band, this dictates which courses you can do:

• Green – Rangers
• Blue – Rangers & Explorador
• Red – Rangers, Explorador, Aventura & Thriller
• Black – Explorador, Aventura, Thriller & Extreme

Rangers – Min. 1.15m | 19 challenges | 1.5m to 2m Circuit Height

These are great beginner courses that can be tackled by all the family when you’re just getting started out. Children need to be able to independently handle their equipment then climb, crawl and zipline around the obstacles.

Explorador – Min 1.25m | 17 challenges | 2m to 4m Circuit Height

A medium difficulty circuit for parents and children to tackle together – or more confident children can tackle alone. There’s a variety of suspended bridges and zip lines to try.

Aventura – Min 1.4m | 15 challenges | 2m to 8m Circuit Height

The challenges increase in difficulty and include rope wall climbs and suspended aerial bridges without hand support. This is much more challenging than Explorador – beginners should look to tackle this first to get their confidence and skills up. You will be up to 8m off the ground.

Thriller – Min 1.4m | 15 challenges | 5m to 10m Circuit Height

If ziplining is your thing, this is the one for you! Soar over the treetops of Mushrif Park as you take on 15 ziplines, including the longest in the park at 160m. This one is less physically challenging than Extreme but it more than makes up for it in thrills.

Extreme – Min 1.6m/16-years-old | 16 challenges | 3.5m to 9m Circuit Height

The most challenging at Aventura Park, the black Extreme course includes a 25-metre Tarzan jump, suspended aerial bridges without side support and zip lines. This one is only for your adventure junkies as it’s very high off the ground (5m to 9m) and is super challenging, therefore a 1.6-metre limit applies and only those over 16 years of age. {NB Extreme isn’t available on One Circuit Experiences}

Mini Kids

If your kids are under 1.15m and 6 years old then they can still attend the Mini Kids section (over 1.05m they can partake in activities independently). The area is supervised and kids will undertake a range of craft activities as well as a mini obstacle course and zip line swing. Kids are also offered a 20-minute nature walk.

Challenges

New this year, the bucket list challenges are separate to the obstacle course. You can pay to complete either as a single activity or take on a package of 3!

• Leap of Faith – climb a 5m pole, balance on top then jump to hit a ball! (Minimum age 12, a minimum height of 1.4m)
• Cat Walk – balance and faith needed to make your way over this balance beam – blindfolded! (Minimum age 12, a minimum height of 1.4m)
• Himalaya – 12m climbing wall for birds-eye views over the park (Minimum age 12, a minimum height of 1.4m)
• Jacobs Ladder – work in a team of 2 to make your way up as increasing rungs get wider! (Minimum age 12, a minimum height of 1.4m)

Chris Cafe – Refreshments at Aventura Parks

Timing your trip to start or finish at Chris Cafe is a great idea. A small but chic cafe with a grat selection of ready to grab healthy bites and salads, as well as a cook-to-order menu.

Making up around 10% of the Dubai Emirate in the United Arab Emirates, Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve is one of the most exciting up-and-coming eco-tourism projects in Dubai.

Found to the southwest of Dubai city and incorporating many of the Dubai desert’s famous landmarks (some may know the area as Saih Al Salam desert), this unfenced nature reserve is set to become one of Dubai’s most prominent outdoor tourist attractions.

Whilst the area has long been accessible to the public, the Desert Conservation Reserve status was brought into place in 2018 to better manage leisure facilities and protect the desert environment.

Let’s take a look at what you can find exploring around Al Marmoon Desert Conservation Reserve and how you go about it.

Top things to see and do in Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve

The Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve is still a work in progress, with the intention on completion the area will house more than 20 environmental, cultural, and sports-related activities. Here’s just a taste of what you can already expect to find:

Wildlife spotting at Al Qudra Lakes

Set in amongst the rolling desert dunes, Al Qudra Lakes are a man-made attraction, built to attract native wildlife. Whilst the lakes themselves have been artificially created, the wildlife that has made itself at home in and around the lakes are all native species.

The series of lakes attract migratory birds as well as black swans, geese, ducks, and flamingoes – in fact, an incredible 204 native bird species and 158 migratory bird species are now calling this area home.

A number of animal and bird observation platforms have been built alongside the lakes to observe these creatures from a safe distance. The UAE’s largest concentration of Arabian Oryx also resides in the area around the lakes.

Camping is permitted around the lakes, as is barbecuing with a grill or pot stove off the ground – no campfires are allowed to protect the desert environment.

Tip: Type in “The Nest” or “Falcon Oasis” to Google Maps to find the bird watching structures.

Entry to Al Qudra Lakes is free, open 24 hours a day.

A romantic stroll at The Love Lake

An extension to Al Qudra Lakes is the see-it-to-believe it attraction of the Love Lake – or Love Lakes Dubai. Utterly instagrammable and easily accessible to the public, the Love Lake is the perfect desert location for a romantic stroll or family-friendly outing and picnic.

A rubber walking track runs nearly 7 kilometres around the circumference of the two intertwined love heart-shaped lakes. Although it’s difficult to see the love heart shape from ground level, there are plenty of “love” signs and insignia dotted around the park – a truly unique Dubai desert feature.

The Love Lake is 2WD accessible and open for free 24 hours.

Take a ride at Al Qudra Cycling Track

Hidden in the desert is an incredible 86km long asphalt cycling track (also known as Saih Al Salam Bicycle Track). One of the longest and best in the UAE you’ll find novices through to cycling athletes out on the track, best visited at dawn and dusk to beat the heat but catch the light.

Not got a bike? That’s OK as there are rental options from the Trek UAE bike shop, located at the end of Al Qudra Road. They offer 5 different styles of bikes including fat bikes and kids’ bikes. You do need to book well in advance though, especially on winter weekends they book out. Discounted rates apply on weekdays.

There are two starting points for the cycling track, both with car parks. There’s a 50km loop from the bike rental shop, as well as a 36km return track known as “The Stick” (accessible from near Arabian Ranches/Studio City), both very smooth rides with only a very gentle incline. Experienced riders can also try some newer extensions to the 50km loop.

Remember before driving out to the Al Qudra track:

• No helmet = no ride. They can be booked along with your bike if renting or BYO with your own bike.
• Restrooms are only available at the rental shop, not around the track.
• There is very limited water around the track – take plenty with you.
• Stick to the right, faster cyclist will pass you on the left.
• Most of the 50km track is unlit, so night riders will require lights (and watch for wildlife!)

There is no entry fee to the track or the car parks, just the cost of your bike rental, if applicable.

Dine at The Last Exit

This street truck park is a foodie favourite, a real surprise hub of activity in this desert location. Offering many facilities for visitors to the Al Qudra Lakes and beyond, you’ll find petrol, restrooms and a food store here as well as a selection of food trucks.

The Last Exit is found at the end of the D63. There’s no public transport out here so you’ll need your own wheels or a taxi.

Relax and sleep it off at Bab Al Shams

A touch of luxury in the desert, Bab Al Shams offers a wonderful luxury retreat who like to enjoy the desert experience with a few mod-cons to hand! Enjoy the beautiful infinity pool overlooking the desert, recline in the Satori Spa and dine at one of the half dozen food outlets on site.

It’s thriving with activity particularly on weekends with a brunch and picnic lineup on offer in the winter months seeing many daycationers as well as staycationers enjoying this desert retreat.

Cheer on the action at Al Marmoom Camel Track

The Al Marmoom Camel Racing Track is one of the largest in the UAE. Camel racing season is over the winter months, you can check out the schedule of events at www.dubaicrc.ae (use Google translate!), most races occur on the weekends.

It’s free to enter the Grandstands, with most racing happening early morning between 7:00 am to 9:00 am. Bring binoculars for viewing from the grandstand (there are now also large screens to view the action) and watch not only the stampeding hooves of camels ridden by remote-controlled jockeys but the thundering entourage of excited owners in 4x4s cheering on their charges.

We all know that the tallest tower in the world Burj Khalifa, is bound to bring with it some spectacular views, and it is unsurprisingly the #1 tourist attraction in Dubai; but is it the only option for a birds-eye view? Or would you rather take on one of Dubai’s more unique experiences?

Here we’re going to share with you 13 different exciting and intriguing ways to savour the city views of Dubai – some a little more adrenaline-pumping than others!

1. Zipline over Dubai Marina

What better way to get a birds-eye view over the spectacular skyline of Dubai Marina than to literally fly through it! The 1 km long, 80km/hr experience is the longest urban zipline in the world.

XLine Dubai offers flights 6 days a week (closed Tuesday) between 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm. You grab your tickets from the XLine Booth in Dubai Marina Mall (Level P). Here you’ll be weighed (suck those bellies in!) fitted with helmet and harness, undertake a safety briefing then head to your take-off point in Amwaj Towers across the marina before you come flying back to Dubai Marina Mall.

Note, in order to zip line you need to be over 130cm and weigh between 50 to 100kg and be aged 12 to 65 years

2. The Dubai Frame

Nowhere near as tall as the Burj Khalifa at a mere 48 floors high, but the Dubai Frame is undoubtedly a unique way to take in some superb city views of both the modern skyline of Dubai to one side and the older side of the city and Dubai Creek to the other.

Visitors are taken on a guided tour from the past to the future as they cross the glass-bottomed frame (it is literally the largest “frame” in the world), before returning to earth and a glimpse to the future. Tickets are certainly cheaper than the Burj Khalifa and the queuing not nearly so bad!

3. Soar over the Dubai desert by hot air balloon

Setting off from the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, this is certainly one of the most spectacular and dramatic Dubai views you will get. Be prepared for an early start as you will depart your Dubai hotel with pickups included from 4.30 am to get prepared for your safety briefings and dawn lift-off.

See the sunrise over the desert plains at 4,000 feet enjoying views of gazelles and Arabian Oryx followed by gourmet breakfast. One of the most spectacular ways to experience the Dubai desert.

4. Sky Dive over Palm Jumeirah

One of the most spectacular views over the man-made island Palm Jumeirah can be found from high in the sky using Skydive Dubai to transport you 13,000 feet in the air from their Palm Dropzone. You will take into the incredible views of the Palm whilst enjoying a thrilling freefall at 120km/hr.

Skydive Dubai also operates a second Desert Dropzone sitting 35km outside of the city for those who’d like a new experience. Participants need to be aged between 12 and 60 years old – along with a myriad of other health requirements to be met! Definitely only for the brave!!!

5. Sundowners at one of the city’s superb rooftop bars

There are a plethora of amazing rooftop bars adorning the Dubai skyline – some with chilled-out vibes, others with weekend parties to impress or incredible unique nighttime dining experiences.

Level 43 Sky Lounge in Dubai (pictured) is a popular favourite for Downtown views, or head to Dubai Marina area and JBR for several choices including Atelier M in the Pier 7 Complex – multiple floors of rooftop vibes or Hilton’s Pure Sky Lounge is a favourite for beach-lovers.

6. Stay in the world’s tallest hotel

Ok at 356 metres tall, its not an inch on Burj Khalifa, but proudly sitting 75 Floors tall, the 4-star Gevora Hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road currently holds the Guinness World Record – for now – as the world’s tallest hotel, affording its residents and visitors with spectacular city views.

There’s some seriously stiff competition in Dubai when it comes to tall hotels, in fact, Dubai current holds the record with 6 out of the top 10 tallest hotels in the world! (Being super cheeky – the world record can only be held if the building is exclusively a hotel – The Ritz Carlton Hong Kong at 484m is actually the highest hotel room!)

7. Ain Dubai [Temporarily Closed]

The world’s tallest observation wheel is open in Dubai! Ain Dubai, standing at a spectacular 250m high, is part of the new Bluewaters island complex that sits off the coast of JBR.

A ride in one of the luxury capsules will take you approximately 48-minutes and reward you with spectacular views over Palm Jumeirah, JBR, the Burj Al Arab and on a clear day, even as far as the Burj Khalifa and Downtown Dubai.

8. Helicopter flight over Dubai

It doesn’t get much more incredible than taking a helicopter ride over Dubai to experience the whole city from above. The journey is brief – only 12 minutes from the Dubai Police Academy Helipad and over the Palm Jumeirah and Atlantis – but you will get to take on one of the most truly spectacular cityscapes in the world – a true bucket list experience worth saving for.

9. High Tea at the Burj Al Arab

There’s no way to get inside Burj Al Arab unless you are a paying guest – and what better way to enjoy it than over afternoon tea! SkyTea in Skyview lounge on the 27th floor is the most highly commended – albeit it comes with a hefty price tag starting from 500 AED for adults.

An alternative is to book yourself in for a sundowner at one of the bars, a SkyView beverage package is “only” 330 AED, or even better for those on a budget who don’t want to miss the Burj Al Arab experience, try booking yourself into Gold on 27 (temporarily closed) for an evening cocktail – a minimum of 200AED a head cover charge applies but it is by far the cheapest way to get your entry ticket to amazing!!!

Another option we love to throw into the mix when considering spectacular views of the Burj Al Arab is to visit Souk Madinat Jumeirah. This modern marketplace, built in a traditional style, is surrounded by waterways where you can enjoy a unique traditional Abra experience. This will take you to the closest views at ground level of the Burj Al Arab with a superb traditional Arabian backdrop.

10. The View at The Palm

Situated smack in the centre of Palm Jumeirah, The View at the Palm is the city’s latest and greatest observation deck on the 52nd floor of the iconic Palm Tower

10. Dubai Skyline from the water

Not all spectacular views in Dubai need to come from above. Make sure at some point in your journey to Dubai you get out onto the water. A speedboat trip around the Palm Jumeirah with views back to the ultra-modern skyline can be rewarding, or even a ferry ride that takes you from Al Ghubaiba to Dubai Marina will last for 1 hour and 40 minutes and take you along much of the city’s incredible coastline and past the Palm Jumeriah.

The man-made Dubai Canal, which connects through to Dubai Creek, is another superb way to experience the views of the city’s towering skyscrapers beneath, also available on a public ferry or private dinner cruise.

Overnight Desert Camps in Dubai

One of the most unique desert experiences is to actually camp in Dubai overnight under the clear skies of the desert, so rarely interrupted by clouds or haze.

Your typical evening desert safari from Dubai lasts approximately 5 to 7 hours. You will have pick up services to and from your Dubai accommodation and a little taster of everything that is on offer. Unfortunately, these experiences can be rushed and as part of a much larger group.

For a more intimate experience, we suggest you look into an overnight camp instead. These are some reputable companies that offer an overnight desert experience from Dubai:

• Dubai Desert Safari & Gourmet Breakfast – the undisputed champion of Dubai desert luxury is Platinum Heritage. They operate from within the protected Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve and their focus on the natural environment, quite different to the usual “dune bashing” style desert safari’s. Accommodation is in simple stone huts with mattress and bedding provided, along with dinner and breakfast of a 5-star standard. (They also offer a package which includes a morning hot air balloon ride)
• Overnight Dubai Desert Safari with BBQ Dinner – not quite of the same luxury but the price tag reflects this too, Orient Tours offer an overnight safari option in addition to an evening only experience in their Bedouin camp. The overnight option allows you to enjoy your evening dinner experience for longer with tanoura dance performance and belly dancing, before retreating to your accommodation – igloo style tens designed for two with mattress and bedding provided.
• Red Dunes & Camel Safari with Overnight camp – another that operates as an add on to their normal evening program. Guests staying overnight at their Al Khayma Desert Camp will enjoy a night desert guide before retreating to their Bedouin-style tent, pillows and blankets provided and morning breakfast included before transferring you back to Dubai.

Luxury Desert Camping in Dubai

If the idea of ACTUAL camping doesn’t particularly float your boat, don’t worry! There are much more luxurious ways you can enjoy the Dubai desert (though they do come with a more substantial price tag).

• Al Maha A Luxury Collection Desert Resort– this is as luxurious as desert camping gets in Dubai with a small and exclusive set up of 42 private tented villas. Sitting inside the Dubai Desert Conservation reserve around 45 minutes from Downtown Dubai, this is one of the most exclusive and unique experiences you can dream of. • Mysk Al Badayer Retreat – Sitting around 40 minutes south of Downtown Dubai, you are technically in the Emirate of Sharjah for this luxurious camping set up. There is a mixture of room and luxury glamping tents available, along with traditional desert experiences on offer – check pricing here.

Campings Sites in Dubai

If you are based in Dubai and have your own camping gear- or access to someone who can lend you the appropriate kit then- by all means, you can find your own patch of sand in Dubai and set up camp.

There are a few sites where you can book designated camping spots with access to a range of facilities including toilets and BBQ pits – you can try Hatta Camping (They also offer a number of glamping options).

Alternative spots for camping in Dubai with a good reputation include:

• Al Qudra Lakes – quite close to the city between Bab al Shams and Seih Al Salam desert this is a great beginner spot as you can 2WD in parts. Though for the same reason can also be very busy and full of party-goers at weekends. You will find it much quite during the week, a beautiful spot for wildlife spotting including swans and flamingos, part of the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve.
• Big Red – take the Dubai-Hatta Road towards al Madam. The spot is popular with recreational vehicle enthusiasts so do be care where you set up camp.

More experienced 4×4 drivers may also like to head into neighbouring Emirate Abu Dhabi and the Liwa Desert for some of the country’s most spectacular and challenging dunes.

If you are self-camping in Dubai and the UAE, a few really handy pointers to stick to:

• Always let someone know that you are going into the desert, but even better travel in convoy so there is somebody to seek help should you get stuck.
• Bring your own garbage bags. Unfortunately, litter is a problem in popular camping spots – always try to take home more than you brought.
• Carry basic camping equipment with you – think not just 4WD gear but water and firewood. There’s a good guide here what items you should consider for desert camping.

The Dubai desert for an evening

If you’d still like to enjoy the moonlit skies of Dubai –  but the thought of sleeping in the desert makes you itchy just thinking about  – then maybe an evening desert safari is more to your liking.

A typical desert safari in Dubai can pick you up from your hotel accommodation in Dubai then take you through the rolling sand dunes to a desert camp.  Enjoy experiences from camel rides to dune buggies, traditional henna painting and an evening Bedouin meal before being safely transported back to your comfy hotel to shower off!

Some suggested tour companies to try for an evening desert safari:

• Arabian Dune Safari – including pickups, dune bashing, camel ride, henna, sheesha, belly dancing show and dinner.

• Platinum Desert Safari – a far more sedate trip through the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve in a vintage landrover, a wildlife safari, followed by camel rides, entertainment, falconry display.
• Private Night Safari & Astronomy – for keen desert explorers the focus here is on the beauty of the desert and the night skies. Hotel pickups, 3-course dinner, nighttime wildlife spotting, and astronomy session.

If you are interested in camel trekking and up close camel encounter experiences, there are a few tour options that set off early in the day and you can enjoy Bedouin breakfast & hospitality rather than dinner.

Best time to go camping in the Dubai Desert

It goes without saying, Dubai is in an arid desert region and the summer’s get HOT. The camping season really runs from late October through to late April, though it’s most comfortable from November to March.

Luxury tented camps will be air-conditioned, making them accessible for a much greater part of the year (albeit their leisure programs are likely to be curtailed over the hottest months).

Evening-only camps will run throughout the year, but do be prepared for just how hot this can be even at night in the hottest months of the year. Also, all camps are required by law to cut their evening dancing and musical entertainment during the holy month of Ramadan – you can find out when Ramadan falls here.
