Dubai to Yas Island FREE Shuttle

When you book your tickets to any of the Yas Theme Parks, you can take advantage of the FREE Yas Express shuttle bus service from Dubai to Yas Island. This is by far the most convenient way to travel to Yas Island from Dubai at no additional cost.

You will need evidence of an e-ticket for any of the theme parks; the bus operates on a first-come, first-served basis.

There are now multiple designated starting points in Dubai (take note of the latest timetable here). Yas Express Route D includes buses that depart from:

• D1 Mercure Dubai Barsha Heights Hotel Suites & Apartments (leaves 9:30 AM, returns 9:25 PM)
• D2 Millennium Place Marina (leaves 9:30 AM, returns 9:40 PM)
• D3 Rixos Premium JBR, JA Ocean View Hotel, DoubleTree by Hilton Dubai – Jumeirah Beach (Leaves 9:20 AM, returns 10:00 PM
• D4 Millennium Plaza Downtown Hotel, The H Hotel Dubai, Sheraton Grand Hotel, Conrad Dubai Sheikh Zayed Road (leaves 9:20 AM, returns 10:30 PM)
• D5 V Hotel Dubai, Curio Collection by Hilton (leaves 9:30 AM, returns 9:50 PM)
• D5 Citymax Hotel Bur Dubai (leaves 9:30 AM, returns 10:30 PM)
• D7 Deira City Centre (beside Colors Cafe) (leaves 9:30 AM, returns 10:30 PM)

Timing is subject to traffic conditions. All buses stop at Yas WaterWorld/WB World Abu Dhabi first, then at SeaWorld, then at Ferrari World.

Free Yas Express Shuttle from the Northern Emirates to Yas Island

There is also a daily service operating from the Northern Emirates to assist guests on a day trip to Abu Dhabi. This service departs from different locations each day:

• Ras Al Khaimah on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
• Fujairah on Tuesday
• Sharjah on a Thursday
• Ajman on a Saturday and Sunday

Dubai to Yas Island Transfers

If the Yas Island Shuttle bus timings do not work for you, and you already have your theme park tickets, you may prefer to arrange your own transfers; this is undoubtedly the fastest way to get to Yas Island from Dubai and will maximise your time at the parks. These are options to consider:

• Private transfer to Yas Island theme parks from Dubai – Your most comfortable option with different classes of cars to chose from to fit your group and budget – offer via Klook

• Use Get Transfer – a service that allows users to put in their journey details, and drivers bid for your fare. You set the vehicle size you need and whether you’d like it to be one-way or a return transfer. A good way to get competitive pricing over the regular ride-share service that will set your price for you (Works sort of similarly to In Drive, which you may be familiar with; In Drive is not presently an option available in the UAE)

Dubai to Yas Island Taxi Fare

If you take a metered taxi from Dubai to Yas Island, you will likely pay the following, based on our experience:

• From Downtown Dubai 250 AED ($68 USD)
• From Dubai Airport 300 AED ($82 USD)
• From JBR/Dubai Marina area 200 AED ($54 USD)

Taxis from Dubai are allowed to cross into the Emirate of Abu Dhabi without issue. However, some taxi drivers may insist that you stop at the first ADNOC petrol station after the border and ask you to switch to a local Abu Dhabi taxi to complete the journey. They are most likely near the end of their shift and don’t want the extra hour + journey back!

Self-Drive Dubai to Yas Island

If you have access to a car or wish to rent a car and drive in Dubai, you can easily self-drive to Yas Island:

• From Dubai, take the E11 Highway (Sheikh Zayed Road)
• Stay left at Al Shahama for the E10, signposted to Abu Dhabi
• Take the Yas Island East Exit for the E12 (also marked ‘Yas Leisure Drive‘)
• Follow the blue signs that say ‘Yas Leisure Drive‘ until you reach the brown tourist signs. Follow each to your final destination – each theme park has its own free car parking.

Yas Island to Dubai Transport

Returning to Dubai from Yas Island, you can return the same free shuttle service with your ticket as evidence that you have been to the parks. 

If this does not fit your timings, however, you may need to take a metered taxi back to Dubai from Yas Island, or try a ride-share service such as Careem. They are available at all four venues and will take you door-to-door.

Understanding the 7 Emirates of the UAE

Although Dubai might be the most internationally well-known city in the UAE and indeed the largest, the capital city of Abu Dhabi should not be left off your agenda.

Abu Dhabi is both a city and an emirate. It is by far the largest and most wealthy of all the Emirates, as this is where the majority of the country’s oil reserves lie. Home to the Grand Mosque, the country’s Presidential Palace, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, and now a string of internationally acclaimed theme parks and tourist attractions, it really is an unmissable stop on your Dubai itinerary.

Many will factor in a day trip to Abu Dhabi, but we really think your itinerary should be split between the two emirates, especially if you want to get deeper beneath the skin of the country and include a visit to the regional city of Al Ain, in Abu Dhabi Emirate, bordering Oman.

Transport in the UAE

Getting around the Emirates is primarily best done by road. Although rail infrastructure is currently being built, there are presently no passenger rail services, so you will find you need to hire a car, take a tour/private transfer, or take public transportation.

The country has several international airports, though by far the largest is DXB (Dubai International Airport), home to Emirates and many international airlines. AUH in Abu Dhabi (Zayed International Airport) is the second largest by passenger numbers, home to Etihad, the country’s national carrier, many international airlines and budget airlines such as WizzAir and AirArabia.

Whichever city you start in, you can rearrange our suggested itinerary to fit the days you have. We assume you are flying in and out of Dubai with a side trip to Abu Dhabi.

Hiring a Car and Driving From Dubai

If you want to explore the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, we recommend hiring a car for only the days you need it. When you are in Dubai, you can get around largely without a car and rely on Dubai’s extensive public transport network.

Be aware that when hiring a rental car, there are both Salik toll charges in Dubai and DARB road tolls in Abu Dhabi (peak hours only). Your rental car company will take care of your tolls, but they will charge these onto you with an additional administrative fee.

UAE roads, for the most part, are good, multi-lane freeways, but traffic moves FAST. And other drivers may not display the manners and skills you expect. You need to be a confident driver to take to the roads in the UAE. Fuel is relatively cheap compared to elsewhere in the world, making it an economical way to get around.

Public Transport

The intercity bus is the main form of transport from Dubai to Abu Dhabi. It leaves from Al Ghubaiba Bus Station in Dubai and Ibn Battuta (both interchange with the Metro) and terminates at Al Wadha Station in central Abu Dhabi. Once in Abu Dhabi, there are quite a few choices, from local bus services to taxis and Careem – learn more about these Intercity services here.

It still doesn’t appear well-advertised that Abu Dhabi has quite a comprehensive network of FREE shuttle buses run by Visit Abu Dhabi. Unlike local buses, they specifically cater to tourists and take guests from many major hotels in the city to popular attractions. If you are only day tripping to Abu Dhabi from Dubai, then there are a couple of shuttles to be aware of, too. Namely, the Yas Express for the theme parks and the Cultural Express for visitors to the Louvre and Qasr Al Watan.

A 10 Day UAE Itinerary (Dubai & Abu Dhabi)

It would be best to look at this itinerary alongside our Dubai 7-Day itinerary. Not every day plan we have set out may appeal, so pick and choose which days you’d like to spend in Dubai before starting your road trip into the Abu Dhabi Emirate. We suggest you add 3-4 days in Abu Dhabi and the remainder of your time in Dubai.

A Complete UAE Itinerary

With two weeks available, you could include a visit to all seven Emirates of the UAE. Abu Dhabi is by far the largest Emirate, and Dubai is the most populous, but don’t forget there are another five Emirates, often collectively referred to as the ‘Northern Emirates’, sitting northeast of Dubai.

There’s lots of information about the UAE’s other emirates on our affiliate website, Family Travel in the Middle East, which we’ve linked in below. So here’s how we’d split up our time for a two-week sightseeing tour of the UAE:

• Day 1 – 7: as above
• Day 8: Drive to Fujairah – If you drive via the mountain village of Masafi, don’t forget to check out the local market. Once in Fujairah, visit the Fujairah Fort and Heritage Village before checking in at your hotel (we recommend a stay on Al Aqah Beach for anyone looking for a seaside stay). Hit the beach or organise a snorkelling tour for the afternoon and then head for sundowners back at the beach.
• Day 9: Fujairah – After breakfast visit the Bidyah Mosque, the oldest mosque in the UAE, or if the weather allows, organise a hike in the craggy Hajar mountains, or visit the coastal town of Dibba. For more information about what to do in Fujairah click here.
• Day 10: Ras al Khaimah – Visit the Al Suwaidi Pearl Farm, old souk, and the Ras Al Khaimah National Museum.
• Day 11: Ras Al Khaimah – Explore the wadis of Ras Al Khaimah, or climb the UAE’s highest mountain Jebel Jais where you will also find the longest zip-wire in the world. To find out more click here. You could also take the afternoon to visit Ajman and Umm Al Quwain, the smallest emirates in the UAE
• Day 12: Sharjah- Visit the Museum of Islamic Civilisation, the Sharjah Art Museum and the Al Hosn Fort Museum, take a tour of the beautiful Al-Noor Mosque, or the grand Sharjah Mosque. There’s no shortage of other museums and cultural attractions in Sharjah, so make sure you check out our full list of cultural attractions in Sharjah before planning your trip. • Day 13: Dubai – Return to Dubai for some last minute shopping and R&R.
• Day 14: Departing Dubai

Feel free to play around with these ideas as much as you like, fitting them to your time and interests. We think the above itineraries will give you a broad spectrum of what the UAE is all about.

• With kids, consider adding an extra day or two to visit water parks or theme parks.
• If you have a stronger cultural interest, you might want to include a few more museums.
• If it all feels too fast-paced, add an extra beach day!

Places to Visit in Dubai

We have Dubai’s top attractions pretty well covered elsewhere on our website, so to summarise (with links to each of these if you need more detail), we’d include the following day plans

Old Dubai: Take a ride on an abra across Dubai Creek, visit the old souk and delve into the Al Fahidi neighbourhood, where you’ll find traditional houses, art galleries, muesums and quaint cafes. Spend the evening, strolling around the alleyways, or if you’d like to end the day with a sharp contrast, head to the Museum of the Future.

Modern Dubai and Downtown: A day is easily passed at the enormous Dubai Mall. Known as the world’s largest shopping centre, Dubai Mall is home to a a range of high street and designer brands. It’s also where you’ll find access to the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, and the mesmerising Dubai Fountains. We recommend booking a table at one of the fountain-side restaurants to really make the most of the show.

Flights of Fancy: Explore some of Dubai’s more unique landmarks like the inventive Miracle Garden and the adjacent Butterly Garden. Spend time visiting one of Dubai’s many theme parks, such as Legoland or the IMG World of adventure, and as the light dims, head to Dubai’s famous Glow Garden.

R&R Dubai Style: Head to the JBR, or one of Dubai’s exclusive beach clubs, for a full on day of R&R. Take lunch al fresco as you soak up the chilled out atmosphere. Finish the day with drinks at the Aura Skypool, or another rooftop bar.

Splash and Relax: Head to one of Dubai’s world class water parks for a day of fun. If you choose to visit Atlantis, don’t forget to check out The Lost Chambers Aquarium. You can find out more about Dubai’s water parks here.

Places to Visit in Abu Dhabi City

The Grand Tour: Start at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, lunch at the Ritz Carlton before heading to Qasr Al Hosn & and the House of Artisans, perhaps stop for coffee at the Observation Deck at Etihad Towers, or head to the Emirates Palace Hotel for a gold dusted Cappucino, then make your way to Qasr Al Watan for a tour of the presidential palace, and perhaps even a light show.

Nature & Culture: Begin the day by exploring the Jubail Mangroves in the morning, then head to the Saadiyat Cultural District. Here you can visit the Abu Dhabi branch with its impressive collection of international art and historical artifacts, or discover the Abrahamic Family House, a unique multi-faith development which aims to foster interfaith understanding a co-operation.

After a busy afternoon of culture, take a stroll through the beachside Mamsha District, where you’ll find lots of nice cafes and restaurants, or take a dip in the sea at the adjacent Soul Beach.

Fun & Frolics: Dedicate Day 3 to Yas Island and visit the theme parks; you’ve no chance of doing them all in one day, but two in a day is perfectly possible. WB World generally opens at 11.00 am, so start your day with one of the parks that open at 10.00 am.

If you’d like to visit Yas Waterworld, we recommend that you do this towards the end of the day when it’s a bit cooler. Finish your day by exploring the Yas Bay Waterfront and nearby Yas Marina (note some venues have a dress code, so make sure that you’re prepared). If theme parks aren’t your thing, consider replacing day 3 with a visit to the Falcon Hospital in Al Shewian in the morning, followed by lunch at Yas Bay and some shopping at Yas Mall. Or, if you’re a keen golfer, you’ll find some of the most amazing golf courses here.

Where to stay in Abu Dhabi

This is again going to be highly variable depending on interest. If you are focused on the theme parks and Yas Island, it’s best to stay on one of the Yas hotels, where you can also pick up deals inclusive of theme park tickets.

Beach lovers, we recommend you head to Saadiyay. It’s the perfect place if you’re seeking a little downtime and want to be close to the up-and-coming Cultural District.

Looking for somewhere central to make everything easy to reach? Then staying in the Grand Canal/ Bab Al Bahr area near the mosque might fit the bill.

Top Attractions and Places to Visit In Al Ain

Often missed out of UAE itineraries, not enough is written in tourist guides about the wonders of Al Ain, also referred to as the Garden or Oasis City. Sitting fairly equidistant between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, on the border with Oman, Al Ain has a remarkably diverse geography and a special place in the history of the UAE.

Al Ain is dominated by the 1,249 metre tall Jebel Hafeet, below which you’ll find lush springs and the city’s famous oases. The Al Ain oasis is known for its intricate falaj irrigation system and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The palm plantation is punctuated by palaces, forts, and small mosques and is a highlight of many people’s visit to the UAE.

The city is also the birthplace of the founding father of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and many of the city’s grander buildings have close links with the royal family.

The top attractions in Al Ain include:

• The Al Ain Oasis (and several other smaller oases – all part of the UNESCO sites of Al Ain). Hire a bike or quadracycle to explore the oasis’s twisting pathways and the impressive falaj irrigation system.
• Jebel Hafeet Desert Park – to see the Bronze Age Beehive tombs and drive to the mountain summit for amazing views of Al Ain and the local topography.
• Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum – the Al Ain home of the UAE’s first president, Sheikh Zayed (Closed from 1 July 2024 for renovations)
• Qasr Al Muwaiji – Birthplace of Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed, the country’s second President
• Al Jahili Fort – Featuring an exhibition detailing the travels of Wilfred Thesiger
• Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Mosque – Open to non-Muslims for guided tours
• Al Ain Zoo & Safari Park – we’d argue the best in the country, very spread out, so you’d need to dedicate the best part of a day to exploring.

To do the city justice, you need at least 2 full days, but we’d suggest, with time available in a 10-day itinerary, you give it an overnight stop.

Getting to Al Ain is honestly easiest to self-drive; you can get day tours from Abu Dhabi and Dubai, which we’ll mention here, but the ability to travel at your own pace is exacerbated here as everything is so spread out.

There is the Dubai Pass as well; their system is a little more convoluted with pools and is pretty concentrated on just Dubai.

Starting 1 October 2025, Emirates will prohibit the use of power banks on board all flights. While passengers can still bring one power bank that meets airline regulations, they will no longer be able to charge devices from it during the flight or connect it to the aircraft’s power supply.

Every Emirates aircraft is equipped with in-seat charging facilities, but the airline continues to advise travellers to fully charge their phones, tablets, and laptops before boarding, particularly when flying long haul.

Why has Emirates introduced this policy?

Following a detailed safety review, Emirates has tightened its rules on power banks to minimise the risks linked to lithium batteries. The growing popularity of portable chargers has coincided with an increase in incidents related to lithium batteries across the aviation sector.

Lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries, commonly found in power banks, can pose hazards if damaged or overcharged. In some cases, this can trigger “thermal runaway,” a chain reaction where heat builds uncontrollably within the cell. This may lead to fires, explosions, or the release of harmful gases.

Unlike smartphones and modern electronics, which often include protective charging mechanisms, many power banks lack these same safeguards. Emirates’ new policy aims to reduce this risk by ensuring devices remain unused and easily accessible in the cabin, where crew are trained to respond quickly in the unlikely event of a fire.

Safety remains central to Emirates’ operations, and this change reflects the airline’s ongoing commitment to protecting passengers, crew, and aircraft at every stage of the journey.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has introduced a six-month pilot service for shared taxis. The service allows passengers to travel between the Ibn Battuta transport hub in Dubai and Al Wahda Central Bus Station in Abu Dhabi.

This initiative is designed to provide a fast, convenient, and cost-effective transportation alternative for passengers seeking to travel between the UAE’s two major cities. Based on the pilot’s outcomes, the RTA may consider expanding this shared taxi service to additional locations in the future.

According to the RTA, Ibn Battuta and Al Wahda were chosen after an extensive assessment of potential routes that would benefit from shared services between the two emirates. This initiative aims to offer a more affordable travel option, especially for frequent commuters, as both locations are well-integrated with public transportation hubs and parking facilities.

An intercity bus route already operates between these two city hubs; however, it can be crowded at peak times and takes longer than a taxi journey.

The RTA anticipates that passengers could reduce travel costs by up to 75 per cent when four passengers share a single taxi. The proposed fixed journey cost under the pilot scheme is AED 264, therefore:

• 2 passengers sharing = AED 132 per person
• 3 passengers sharing = AED 88 per person
• 4 passengers sharing = AED 66 per person

The service also allows passengers to pay using bank cards or nol cards, making the payment process convenient. The RTA notes that this initiative is expected to reduce traffic congestion by promoting shared rides, lowering carbon emissions and curbing the demand for unlicensed transport services.

In addition, RTA taxis are equipped with safety features like cameras linked to the Operations Control Centre and systems to monitor driver performance, ensuring that passengers enjoy safe, smooth, and comfortable journeys.

1. Best Dubai Day Trip: Abu Dhabi

Dubai to Abu Dhabi distance: approximately 160km / 1 hour 15 mins

Dubai is often mistaken as the UAE’s capital, but, in fact, it is neighbouring Abu Dhabi that holds this crown. Home to the country’s Federal Supreme Council and President of the UAE, HH Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed al Nahyan, it’s also home to some of the country’s most magnificent architecture and cultural sites.

So many stops that it is challenging to see them all on a Dubai day trip, but here are a few that we recommend you should try to fit into a single-day trip from Dubai:

2. Best Dubai Day Trip: Musandam Peninsula, Oman

Dubai to Khasab distance: 196km / approx 2.5 hours

Transporting you to a whole different country but within reasonable driving distance from Dubai, the “Norway of Arabia” awaits in the Omani exclave of Musandam. Sitting to the northeast of the northern Emirate Ras Al Khaimah, the regional capital of Khasab, Musandam can be easily reached by road – an incredibly picturesque and often breathtaking coastal drive.

From Khasab, there is a small harbour with a plentiful choice of traditional dhow boats and more modern cruising vessels. Sail out to the stunning rocky fjords where the Hajar Mountains that run through the length of Oman and the UAE dramatically end at the Strait of Hormuz.

Dolphin spotting is a favourite activity and in the warmer shoulder season, snorkelling and scuba diving are popular, albeit the better diving is on the eastern coast of the peninsula.

You will want an early start to fit in a full day of fun, and taking an organised day tour, they will help you with the Omani visas and border crossing process. It is possible to hire a car and do it all alone, but first-timers will no doubt appreciate a guide to take you through the Al Darah border crossing point and the formalities involved.

3. Best Dubai Day Trip: Al Ain

Dubai to Al Ain distance: approximately 130km / 1 hour 30 mins

Sitting southwest of Dubai, you will find the Oasis City of Al Ain. With deep historical roots believed to date back to the Neolithic period, this is our top-pick day trip for history lovers. Well-worth visiting spots include Al Jahili Fort, Qasr al Mawaji, Al Ain National Museum (closed indefinitely for renovations), and the Al Ain Palace Museum (the former Royal homestead – closed from Summer 2024 for renovations). 

You may also be fascinated by the supposedly healing hot springs of Al Mubazzarah, at the foot of Abu Dhabi Emirate’s tallest peak, Jebel Hafeet.

Those travelling with kids will definitely want to try and squeeze in a trip to the Al Ain Zoo too. The best in the country, the zoo is set on large grounds with many new installations worth a trip of its own, including the Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre, which is perfect for history lovers of all ages with lots of interactive displays.

You can make the trip to the historic center of Al Ain, in approximately 1.5 hours from Dubai. However, if you plan a trip up the winding road to the top of Jebel Hafeet, add another 40 minutes. You will be rewarded with spectacular views over Al Ain and neighbouring Oman.

4. Best Dubai Day Trip: Ras Al Khaimah

Dubai to Ras al Khaimah distance: approximately 110kms / 1 hour 15 minutes

Ras al Khaimah – affectionately referred to as RAK, is best known as the UAE’s outdoor adventure playground. The stunning Hajar Mountains range runs through the Emirate and is home to the country’s tallest peak, Jebel Jais.

Jebel Jais is an adrenaline junkie’s dream, with plenty of new attractions being added every year. Dubai to Abu Dhabi Bus

The Intercity Bus is the only public transport between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, rather than a metro or train line.

The Intercity Bus Service now operates three routes from Dubai to Abu Dhabi.

• Route 100 – Al Ghubaiba Bus Station (connects to Dubai Green Metro) in Bur Dubai to Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station [Every 20-35 minutes, approx 2.15-hour journey]
• Route 101 – Ibn Battuta Bus Station (connects to Red Line Metro) to Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station [every 20-30 minutes, approx 1.5-hour journey]
• Route 102 – Al Jafilya Bus Station (connects to Max Metro station, Red Line) to Mussafah Shabiya Bus Station, via Ibn Batutta and Zayed International Airport Terminal A [every hour, approx 2-hour journey]

All these routes also run in reverse from Abu Dhabi back to Dubai and cost 25 AED one-way.

The AUH Express runs on the hour, every hour from Ibn Battuta Station 24 hours a day.

Another less-publicised option for AUH airport passengers is to take the Intercity Bus 102 from Al Jafilya Bus Station or Ibn Battuta in Dubai. It’s a slightly slower journey than the express coach but now makes a stop at the new Terminal A Zayed International Airport and only costs 25 AED.

Will there ever be a direct train line between Dubai and Abu Dhabi?

We live in hope!

Etihad Rail looks promisingly close to opening. However, current plans look like the passenger service for Abu Dhabi will terminate on the city’s outskirts, meaning you’d still need a bus or taxi to complete your journey into Abu Dhabi city or airport.

Watch this space, though. There’s sure to be some time savings offered by this new rail service in the very near future.

What is Al Maktoum Airport Dubai?

Situated in the area of the city known as Dubai South, 37 kilometres southwest of the city, DWC is already the site of Al Maktoum International Airport.

When it first opened in 2010, it was known as Dubai World Central, hence the IATA code DWC. The airport was renamed Al Maktoum International Airport (after Dubai’s ruling family) and started taking commercial passenger aircraft in 2013.

Although DWC has long been designated as the future home of Dubai’s aviation hub, the Global Financial Crisis and numerous other factors over the past decade have led to multiple delays in the shift to utilizing the expansive grounds available in Dubai South.

Al Maktoum International Airport presently takes some commercial and cargo flights, but its distance from the city and existing DXB airport (45 kilometres away with no transport links) has long been an issue until a fully comprehensive change to Dubai’s transport infrastructure could be made.

The only periods of time the airport has seen substantial use have been when runway upgrade works have reduced capacity at DXB and occasional emergency diversions.

So in short, we wouldn’t be surprised if you hadn’t heard of Al Maktoum Airport before now!

Grand New Visions For Dubai Aviation

The announcement by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum paves the way for an exciting new era in aviation transport.

Once complete, the new Al Maktoum International Airport terminal will initially have the capacity to handle 150 million passengers annually, growing to 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo by 2050.

Designed to meet the needs of the UAE over the next four decades, the new airport will feature five parallel runways and 400 aircraft gates spanning a 70-square-kilometre site.

Dubai Airport Connections – Now & In The Future

The move will be part of a larger infrastructure plan for the rapidly expanding city. With existing buildings in the city’s east, bordering the emirate of Sharjah, there is no further room for expanding the existing Dubai International Airport. With only two runways, there is no viable way to continue meeting air traffic demand in the decades to come, so a fully fledged second airport is the only real option.

Once opened, Emirates and FlyDubai, the emirate’s two largest state-owned airlines, will fully transition all operations to DWC.

Timeline For The Transition To The New Al Maktoum Airport

The most crucial question you undoubtedly have is when these changes will take effect and which airlines will be affected.

The short answer is that no definitive date has been given, yet. However, reading between the lines of statements made by Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and CEO of Emirates Airline and Group, it appears that the full integration of Emirates and FlyDubai into Al Maktoum International Airport will occur ‘within 10 years’—so it would be safe to say by 2034.

UPDATE! In October 2025, Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths indicated that DXB airport is expected to exceed the 100 million annual passenger mark ‘within the next two years’, reaching maximum capacity of 115 million passengers by 2031. He explained that when they reach capacity, operations will be transitioned to Al Maktoum International Airport in 2032 when they anticipate handing 124 million passengers.

There’s certainly no need to recheck your ticket routing in the next few years, as this AED 128 billion project will be a monumental task – the biggest of its kind seen anywhere in the world – as Dubai looks to cement its position as the world’s largest aviation hub.

There has been no specific announcement yet on what will happen to other airlines that presently use DXB, or whether they will continue to operate on the two runways at DXB after transitioning to the new Al Maktoum International Airport. Currently, 102 international airlines connect Dubai to 262 destinations worldwide in 104 countries.

Flying Etihad: Free Bus Dubai XNB to Abu Dhabi

If you have been visiting Dubai but ultimately need to fly out from Zayed International Airport (AUH) with Etihad, then you can use the Etihad free coach transfer service.

They are now back to a full service since COVID, offering 10 daily transfers from Dubai XNB to AUH.

This leaves from Etihad Travel Mall (Al Wasl Centre, Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Safa 2).  You can check the exact schedule here.

You must pre-book this service using your departure airport as XNB.

If you don’t pre-book, your seat is not guaranteed. You can still get a walk-in seat on the coach for 25 AED, if space is available.

In this transport guide will talk you through all your options for transferring from SHJ to DXB.

Sharjah and Dubai are two separate emirates in the United Arab Emirates, but they are essentially connected cities with no border checkpoint between them. They do, however, run two completely separate public transport systems. Let’s take a look at how they operate together to help you transfer as quickly and as conveniently as possible from SHJ to DXB.

Sharjah Airport to Dubai Airport Distance

The distance from Sharjah International Airport to Dubai International Airport (Terminal 3) by road is just 24 kilometres.

However, due to heavy traffic between these two key airport locations in the UAE, the journey can take upwards of 30 minutes to complete by road in private transport or anything up to 2 hours when relying on public transport and connections.

Option 1 – SHJ to DXB via Al Rolla Terminal

You can catch the Mowasalat bus service from Sharjah Airport to Al Rolla Terminal (Rolla Square) in Sharjah – see the daily bus timetable here.

• These run pretty regularly as there are several different buses taking this route, including the 14, 15, 88 and 99.
• If you have a Sharjah Sayer Card, the journey will cost you AED 6; without you can pay cash AED 8. (Remember, you cannot use Dubai Nol card for services WITHIN Sharjah).
• From Al Rolla Terminal, you can connect to the 313 Bus to DXB Terminal 2. This service operates every 30 minutes from 6:15 AM to 10:15 PM. (NB most flights, however, leave from Terminals 1 & 3).
• SRTA buses from Sharjah to Dubai cost AED 17.
• Another choice is to take the E307 from Al Rolla to Deira City Centre (service every 30 minutes, cost AED 12 on Nol). You can catch the Red Line Metro (service every 5 minutes) from Deira City Centre to DXB Terminal 3 (AED 3-4).

Option 2 SHJ to DXB via Al Jubail

Another option is to take bus Route 99 or 88X from Sharjah Airport to Al Jubail Bus Station in Sharjah. This is the larger bus Terminal where many inter-city services run from to connect to other Emirates in the UAE.

• At Al Jubail Terminal, you can transfer to an E303, which takes you to Union Square Bus Station in Al Karama, Dubai.
• This service is pretty regular from 5:30 AM to 11:30 PM daily, every 15-20 minutes. The fare is AED 12 one way, which you must use a Dubai nol card for (you can get this at Al Jubail Terminal in Sharjah)
• It is within easy walking distance here to Union Square Metro Station, which takes you directly to Terminal 3 on the Red Line Metro, services every 5 minutes, AED 3-4.

Option 3 SHJ to Dubai with Air Arabia

Air Arabia operates a coach service from SHJ to Al Ghurair Centre in Dubai. These comfortable airline coaches run from 7:30 AM to 10:30 PM and cost AED 20 per person. (We are confirming with Air Arabia if they are still running this service in 2024 as they have removed it from their website)

Sharjah Airport and Abu Dhabi Airport

Is your next connection actually in Abu Dhabi (AUH – Zayed International Airport)?

Predominantly used by Etihad and low-budget carriers WizzAir and Air Arabia, there are several ways to get from Sharjah to Abu Dhabi; most involve at least a couple of connections unless you use the private vehicle options we mention above all the way from

• Sharjah Airport to Abu Dhabi Airport is about kilometres 150 kilometres.

Bus from Sharjah Airport to Abu Dhabi

Another new option is the airport express transfer service that runs from Ibn Battuta to AUH. Ibn Battuta is one of the last stops on the Red Metro line in Dubai.

• Following the steps above for getting to DXB in Dubai Emirate.

• Instead of taking the Metro to DXB from Union Square or Deira City Centre, take the Metro red line west, all the way to Ibn Battuta (Approx AED 7.50-8.50)

• Alternatively, take the E308 bus service from Sharjah Al Rolla to Ibn Battuta (AED 20). Generally speaking, even if it involves an extra swap, it’s quicker to use the Metro than the bus.

• There is a large bus terminal at Ibn Battuta; switch here for the AUH Express airport transit service (stand 9).

• This comfort coach will cost you 35 AED one way. Tickets need to be purchased separately from the Dubai Nol card system. You will need a credit card or UAE dirhams to purchase your ticket, or pre-purchase online via GYG here.

• The journey from Ibn Battuta to AUH is around 1 hour and 15 minutes.

• All up, allowing for connections, we’d allow 2.5 to 3 hours to transit from Sharjah Airport to Zayed International Airport (the new name for AUH) using public transport and a budget of AED 63.

Visiting Sharjah

If you’re not in a hurry to make your journey between Sharjah and the other emirates, do stick around in the city of Sharjah. Often referred to as the country’s Culture Capital, Sharjah is abound by incredible museums and beautiful parks. Accommodation, for the most part, is cheaper in Sharjah than in Dubai, and you’ll find another fascinating side to the country.

There is no “city centre” as such to Dubai, but the Downtown Dubai area is probably as close as you’ll get.

Public Transport Options from Dubai Airport to Dubai Mall & Burj Khalifa

There are Metro train, bus, and taxi options to get from Dubai Airport to Downtown Dubai – home to both the Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa among the many attractions. Let’s take a look at each to see what is the quickest and most convenient:

Dubai Airport DXB to Dubai Mall by Metro

The easiest public transport option for visitors to the centre of Dubai’s shopping and entertainment district in Downtown Dubai is by Metro.

• From DXB Terminal 3 or Terminal 1, look out for the signs to the Metro Red Line at the airport – you board at stop R13 or R14.

• You alight at the rather easy-to-recognise station named Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall (R25). There is the Metro Link Bridge (a covered walkway with travelators) to the Mall from the Metro station.

• The estimated travel time from T3 to Burj Khalifa Dubai Mall Metro station is 23 minutes. The walk to the Mall from the station, even with travelators, will add a further 10 minutes to your transit time.

• The Metro service in Dubai runs
  • Monday to Thursday, 5:00 AM to midnight
  • Fridays from 5:00 AM to 1:00 AM
  • Saturdays from 5:00 AM to midnight
  • Sundays from 8:00 AM to midnight
• Check the exact timing of the first and last service from Terminal 1 (R14) or Terminal 3 (R13) here.

• During peak times, the Metro service runs every 4 minutes (6.30 AM to 9:00 AM weekdays) and 4.30 PM to 8:00 PM evenings. Off-peak, the service runs every 7 minutes.

• The standard fare on a Nol Red Card is 5 AED for this journey (Short-term visitors will only need a Red Nol card for individual journeys, noting there is a 2 AED upfront fee as well. For a longer stop or extensive use of transport in Dubai, consider a Nol Silver card, which costs more upfront, but fares are cheaper).

DXB to Dubai Mall by Taxi

RTA Taxis are readily available in front of the terminals at DXB. You should expect a standard taxi from Terminal 3 to Dubai Mall to cost approximately 40 to 55 AED, and the journey to take 15 to 25 minutes, depending on traffic.

Note that when leaving from Dubai Airport, there is automatically a 25 AED flagfall added. The cost thereafter is 1.96 AED per kilometre.

At the airport, there is a choice of a standard taxi, premium taxi, or ladies’ taxi.

NB, if you jump in a Premium Taxi from DXB, they are nicer cars but charge you for the privilege of an extra 1 AED per kilometre! Careful staff don’t sweet-talk you into spending more “for only 1 AED more!!”

The differences in roof colour are just the different taxi companies; the only exception is the ‘pink roof’ taxis are specifically for ladies and families.

Returning from Dubai Mall to Dubai Airport

You simply need to take one of the above-mentioned routes in reverse to get back to DXB from Dubai Mall and the Downtown area:

• There is a large taxi rank available under Dubai Mall (allow 15-25 minutes + 3 hours before your flight)
• The mall contains are busy bus station with local bus services as mentioned above (with Nol card)
• The Metro is still the most convenient and direct route from Dubai Mall to Dubai International Airport (with Nol card allow at least 35 minutes for the train + that ridiculously long walk to the station!!)

What is there to do in Dubai’s Downtown Area?

The most obvious answer is to visit the Dubai Mall for shopping and window browsing, and take in the views from the Burj Khalifa – but the answer goes much deeper than this as there are just so many things to do! 

On a short stopover from Dubai Airport, you will really need to narrow it down to a couple of favourite activities – many you can enjoy for free, others you will need to pay for and preferably pre-book.

• The Dubai Fountain Show – the free musical spectacular of Dubai Fountains happens over lunchtime and all throughout the evening.  There are several vantage points from the Mall and nearby Souk al Bahar to view the show. We explain all the timings and best vantage points here.
• At The Top – Visit Burj Khalifa’s observation decks on Level 124/125.  Just be aware even with timed slot tickets queues can be long, it might be better to save this activity for a longer stopover as it could easily take you 2 hours.  You can see our complete guide here for the best ways to tackle Burj Khalifa here.
• The Dubai Aquarium – there are both free and paid experiences available. From within the centre of Dubai Mall, you can enjoy the world’s largest suspended glass tank for free, or purchase a ticket and head inside for the underwater tunnel and more hands-on experiences – our complete guide to visiting the aquarium here.
• Ice Skating Rink – Fancy a bit of exercise during your stop? Rug up and hire some skates to enjoy the Olympic-sized ice rink, yes within the Mall!
• Dubai Opera – timing your stopover over in an evening you may be able to catch a show at the stunning Dubai Opera House.

What time is Dubai Mall Open?

• The main trading hours for the Dubai Mall are 10:00 AM to midnight (often open later on special public holidays such as Eid).

• Some coffee shops in Dubai Mall open earlier than 10:00 AM, and the Waitrose Supermarket on the basement level opens from 8:00 AM for groceries.

• Restaurants and food courts within Dubai Mall can stay open until 1:00 AM; waterfront promenade restaurants can stay open until 2:00 AM.

• Do note though, when planning your trip back to the airport, the Metro may close before the last shops and attractions do; factor this in for your return journey to DXB from Dubai Mall.

If your Dubai Airport stopover is in the wee hours of the morning (many, many flights land between midnight and 5:00 AM!) then you may be better keeping within DXB for a lounge and entertainment, you can learn about all the things to do in Dubai Airport here.

Alternatives to Dubai Mall and Downtown Dubai on a stopover

If you only have limited time to get out and get some fresh air during a Dubai Stopover, why not also try:

• Dubai Festival City – creekside and close to the airport, this is a smaller shopping mall than Dubai Mall but still has plenty of dining and entertainment options. You can enjoy the nightly IMAGINE sound and light show, or how about Bounce X freestyle Terrain Park if you have active kids to burn off energy?
• Al Seef & Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood – if you’d prefer a taste of old Dubai on a stopover, we recommend catching a taxi to this creekside area of the city (or Red Metro to Khalid bin al Waleed station, changing one stop to Al Fahidi on the Green Line). Beautifully restored buildings and the Dubai Museum (currently closed for renovations) can be found, along with plenty of dining options and the opportunity to take a traditional Abra across the Dubai Creek).
• The Walk & The Beach, JBR – this area takes a little longer to reach from the airport, so you should allow at least an hour in transit in either direction. If you are visiting during the cooler winter months this is the perfect place to catch some rays, maybe even time to head out on a boat tour from Dubai Marina and enjoy dinner at one of the trendy beachfront restaurants, or sundowners from a stunning rooftop bar.
• Grab the Dubai Hop-on Hop-off Bus for a greater taster of experiences and sightseeing all over the city. Note you cannot catch the sightseeing bus directly from the airport. The best starting point for airport passengers to jump on is Deira City Centre, which is located a few stops away from DXB on the Metro Red Line.

• If you’d prefer to get some shut-eye or have a refreshing swim and a rest during your Dubai stopover, you could try one of these conveniently located Dubai airport hotels or see if you might be eligible for a free Dubai Connect hotel room if your connection is unavoidably over 8 hours.

Remember to check your eligibility to leave the airport and how long you actually have spare before attempting to travel from Dubai International Airport to Downtown. We wouldn’t attempt it unless you have 6 hours+ between flights; noting if your not eligible for Visa on Arrival, you cannot get a Transit Visa if your stop is under 8 hours.

Marine Transport in Dubai

Recent and ongoing developments around the landscape of Dubai have included various man-made canals and natural waterways. Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA) has made it possible to travel across these waterways and take a more traffic-free route in order to get to your destination. Not only are there more than one mode of marine transport, but they are all very economical for both residents and tourists.

The traditional wooden Abra boats are most frequently travelled between Dubai Creek, located in the heart of old Dubai, making it a wonderful way to discover the charm of the old city. Also popular with tourists is Dubai Ferry – a modern 100-passenger capacity ferry cruising around the city’s most breathtaking views from the coastline.

Other ways to travel on the tranquil waterways include the Dubai Water Taxi and Dubai Water Bus. Often mistaken for each other, they are, in fact, two different services offered by the RTA operating in different parts of the city.

What is Dubai Water Taxi?

Working just as a normal taxi would on the road, the Dubai Water Taxi is designed to help passengers transit between different locations, except that it travels on the city’s waterways. Although enjoying a bit of sightseeing from these mini air-conditioned water taxis is possible, they are generally used more as a way to commute.

Each Water Taxi can comfortably seat 10 passengers, complete with personal LCD monitors for all.

Routes for the Dubai Water Taxi

Operating between two zones, there are 44 stations spread across the city, from where you can hop on and off. Zone 1 includes the modern skyline of the cosmopolitan city, which includes Dubai Marina and Palm Jumeirah. On the other hand, Zone 2 takes you across a heritage route and includes Dubai Creek and the Dubai Water Canal.

Dubai Water Taxi Cost

Tickets for a Water Taxi can either be booked online through the RTA website, emailing WtBook@rta.ae or by calling the RTA toll free number – 8009090. The Water taxi will then be available to pick you up from your chosen location.

Depending on how far you wish to travel, tickets can cost between AED 55 – AED 205.

Water Taxis can also be chartered for an hourly rate of AED 400 – a great idea if you have a group and need to get between two points of the city on the water.

Frequency of Dubai Water Taxi

Dubai water taxis are flexible and run on-demand only from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM.

What is a Water Bus in Dubai?

Similar to the Water Taxi, the Dubai Water Bus is also a modern way to commute across the water, but it only operates in Dubai Marina.

With only short distances between each stop, it is an ideal way to enjoy this traffic-free route between towering high-rise buildings of this fast-paced city. There are plenty of modern landscapes to see on the ride, from rows of privately owned yachts to going under bridges.

Make the journey even more memorable and photograph-worthy by sailing at sunset or after dark as you catch lights shimmering from the various buildings and watch cafes along the promenade fill up with people.

Each Water Bus has an enclosed air-conditioned interior and is able to comfortably seat 20 passengers, including people of determination. They are currently updating the fleet from older white and red water buses to modern airconditioned abras.

The Dubai Water Bus operates in Dubai Marina, between four scenic locations:

• Marina Terrace
• Marina Walk
• Dubai Marina Mall
• Marina Promenade

There are plans underway to extend an additional route to Blue Waters.

Which Type of Bike To Rent in Dubai?

When it comes to bikes, there isn’t just one type; you’ll find tourist ebikes, sports/track bikes, and desert bikes. And each is for a different purpose.

For instance:

Tourist bikes are made specifically for a few hours to multiple-day trips for riders with any level of experience. They are designed with baskets to carry all your belongings during your trip. In addition, they are comfortable, sturdy, and can sustain more than just the biker’s weight.

Now, if you’re in for some thrill, a sports or track bike would be a good idea. They are designed for speed, acceleration, high performance, and comfort. So, if you plan on visiting a biking track in Dubai, rent a sports or track bike.

Lastly, as Dubai is a desert city, there are many attractions right in the middle of the desert. Although getting there by car or a 4WD jeep would be ideal, cruising through the sand on a desert bike is what adds to the fun! So, if you want to have an authentic desert safari experience, make sure it’s on a fat tire bike!

With that sorted, let us tell you a bit about the rules for cycling in Dubai because you certainly don’t want to get fined for having the time of your life on a bike!

Rules for Cycling in Dubai

Whether you own a bike or are renting one, you should take care of the following things when cycling in Dubai:

• Your bike must have the main headlight, red rear light and reflector.
• While cycling, make sure to stay on the right side of the road.
• You cannot ride a bike on the footpaths as they’re for pedestrians.
• Keep your speed below 30 km/h.
• The bike can only have one rider on it unless it is designed for two riders, like a tandem bike.
• Helmets are strongly recommended but not mandated for street hires; on designated bike tracks, they are a must or entry will be refused.
• Keep both your hands on the handlebars unless signalling a turn.
• You must cycle in a single file and cannot move in a zigzag manner.

How to Hire a Tourist Bike in Dubai

If you want to explore Dubai on a bike, you can easily find two main ebike rental operators in the city.

1. BYKY

A renowned bike rental company in Dubai is BYKY. The best thing about this company is that it offers single bikes and quad bikes, ideal for the entire family.

Unlike other bike rental services, getting a bike from BYKY is relatively easier, as you only have to provide a document as identity proof, and you’re good to go; no need to register for apps and pay online; this is the simplest bike hire in Dubai! (Just don’t forget to pick up your ID card when you finish!)

Location:

BYKY has 7 stations all over Dubai, including Dubai Marina, Creek Park, JBR The Beach, CityWalk P2, Al Barsha Park, Al Seef, and Nahda Pond Park.

Rental Charges:

The rental charges for 30 minutes are 20 AED. There are different rates for different bike types; if you rent a double bike, you pay 55 AED for the first 45 minutes. The rates for the Berg family bike are 70 AED, and 50 AED for an E-scooter.

2. Careem Bike

Careem Bike has a long-standing partnership with the RTA to provide 3500 pedal bikes over five years as part of the integrated public transit system in Dubai. Currently, their fleet has around 800 bikes, but this will shortly increase to 1750 bikes – eventually, there will be 3,500 in their fleet!

Unlike other public transport in Dubai, which can be paid for using your Nol card, even as a visitor to Dubai, you’ll need to download the Careem Bike App (Apple App Store | Google Play Store) and set up an account to get your hands on a rideshare bike in Dubai

Once you’re registered, take out the length of membership you need, and then you’ll get a QR Code to unlock your bike – taking as many 45-minute trips as you like.

One downside is that renters need to be aged 15 years and above, and an adult must accompany those under 18. If you go over 45 minutes at a time before returning your bike to a docking station, you’ll incur an extra charge of 10 AED per 30 minutes.

Location:

There are over 80 stations across the city; this number is increasing this year to 175. You’ll find them in all primary tourist locations across the city, such as Jumeirah Beach, Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, and Dubai Canal.

Rental Charges:

Membership plans range from 1 day to 1 year!

The easiest bike rental packages for tourists in Dubai are daily and weekly – 20 AED/50AED. You can extend this to one month for 75 AED or one year, 420 AED.

Bike Rental Shops in Dubai

If you are looking at more professional high-end bikes for racing and off-roading, some of the bike rental shops we’d recommend you investigate include:

• Wolfi’s Bike Shop – located on Sheikh Zayed Road, offers alloy road bikes, carbon road bikes, e-bikes and urban bikes.
• Trek Bike Shop – For those heading out to the Al Qudra track
• The Cycle Hub – Based at Dubai Autodrome and Jumeirah 1
• F1rstride – another Al Qudra track option, offering entry level through to pro road bikes, mountain bikes and hybrids.

Where Can You Go Cycling in Dubai?

If you’re looking for a safe place to go cycling with your family, here are some favourite Dubai parks where you can do so without the fear of cars coming in the way!

1. Al Barsha Park

Al Barsha Park is a family-friendly park with a 1500-meter-long cycling track located in one of Dubai’s business and residential hubs. It has free entry and is open almost all day from 8 am to 10 am. It is an ideal place to go if you have kids.

2. Mushrif Park

Want to cycle around the gentle dunes? Head over to Mushrif Park, pay 3 AED for entrance (or 10 AED by car), and ride along the 4.5 km loop track through Dubai’s sandy Ghaf forest (though we’ve heard the path is extended beyond the park now, and you can enter for free!) You can cycle in the park till 11 pm; however, the bike track has no lighting after sunset. You must bring your own light after dark, and always a helmet!

Note that a much more challenging mountain bike trail has also opened in Mushrif, don’t mistake this for the sealed path, more appropriate for families and casual riders.

3. Dubai Water Canal

How about cycling at the waterfront? Dubai Water Canal has a 6.4 km cycling track with a magnificent view of the water, while there’s an additional 12 km track at a distance. Both the tracks are refreshing and ideal for cycling in an open space.

4. Palm Jumeirah

Why not head to the 11.6-kilometre-long outer Crescent of Palm Jumeirah for something super scenic and iconically Dubai? You’ll be cycling past some of Dubai’s most luxurious resort hotels and have some epic views back to Jumeirah Beach and JBR. You could pick up a bike after taking the Palm Monorail to the crescent or start from the mainland and take in the paths that include Palm West Beach and Al Ittihad Park.

You may spot some distinctive pastel ebikes at Palm West Beach; these FENIX ebike require you to download the FENIX app and cost just AED 1 per minute for use on Palm Jumeirah.

Bike Tracks in Dubai

If you’re looking to bike ride in Dubai at a proper track reserved just for cycling, here are some amazing places you might like:

1. Al Qudra Cycling Track

Nothing beats riding a bike amidst the dunes of the desert! Al Qudra Cycling Track comprises two tracks ideal for short and long rides. There’s one 18-kilometre path for light cycling; however, you can try the 50-kilometre track that crosses the Bab Al-Shams resort if you want to go all out. It’s the perfect spot for a stopover to refresh yourself for the journey ahead.

If you want to rent a sports bike for this track, you can do so from Al Qudra Trek Bikes, the on-site bicycle shop. You must pre-book these to avoid disappointment, especially at weekends. They have a wide range available including kids’ bikes, performance road bikes, trail bikes and fat bikes.

2. Nad Al Sheba Track

If you’re looking for a bike track that overlooks the city, the Nad Al Sheba is where you should go! Located near the Mayden Racecourse, this track was once a camel track but was converted into a proper bike track some years ago.

It has three loops: the 4km one, the 6km one, and the 8km one. Plus, it is well-lit at night also, so if you want to escape the summer heat, you can go there after sundown for a bike ride.

3. Dubai Autodrome

The Dubai Autodrome is a famous motorsport facility, but it offers a 2.46 km bike track too. It is a closed circuit perfect for people trying to take their cycling skills up a notch. Also, the circuit is lit with floodlights for an exciting bike ride experience at night.

If you’re an avid cyclist who’s looking for some off-road fun, head over to the following places for an exhilarating mountain biking experience:

1. Hatta

Behold Hatta! A mountain located just outside Dubai where the real cycling challenges await you! It has a 52 km long biking trail with 4 different levels based on your biking skills. With hair-raising twists and turns and rocky outcrops, this track is for professionals and seasoned bikers only.

2. Ras Al Khaimah Bike Tracks

The tracks at Ras Al Khaimah are unlike other bike tracks in Dubai! They are specially made for people who enjoy long routes for technical cycling.

E-scooters in Dubai were initially launched in 2020. Although it was a trial phase, it was highly successful; therefore, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) decided to upgrade the laws regarding electric scooters in Dubai.

There are currently around 2000 electric scooters in Dubai, easily accessible to the public. These e-scooters are operated by four RTA-approved companies: Arnab, Skurtt, Lime, and Tier.

Who Can Benefit from E-Scooters?

The e-scooter trend has become quite common in recent years due to increased traffic on Dubai’s roads, making commuting difficult. Therefore, people who are looking for a cost-effective way to make it to and from work are the ones who use e-scooters the most.

However, e-scooters in Dubai have also made it quite convenient for tourists to quickly get around the city, as it is the best option for travelling short distances in popular areas of town.

Now that you know about the laws and rules of using an e-scooter in Dubai, let’s look at some companies that provide e-scooter rentals.

Where can you rent an electric scooter in Dubai?

Currently, there are only four companies that offer Dubai electric scooter rentals. These include two local companies, Arnab and Skurtt, and two international companies, Tier and Lime.

• Download the Arnab app for iOS or Android.
• Locate the nearest e-scooter using the app.
• Wear a helmet and scan the QR code to unlock the e-scooter.
• Once you’re done riding, park the electric scooter at one of the designated places.
• End the ride with one tap using the app.

2. Skurtt

Skurtt is a mobility as a service (MAAS) business that provides a safe, accessible, and affordable solution to people looking to go from one place to another in Dubai without any hassle.

The e-scooter rentals at Skurtt cost AED 0.5 per minute.

To ride a Skurtt electric scooter in Dubai:

• Download the iOS or Android app for Skurtt.
• Open the app, and you will automatically be taken to a map showing locations for the nearest e-scooter.
• Reach the location, and unlock the Skurtt e-scooter by scanning the QR code or manually entering the 6-digit scooter code located below the QR code.
• Start your ride, and once you’re done, park it at the designated places.
• End the ride by tapping on the app.

3. Tier

Tier is an international e-scooter provider operating in Dubai. It was launched in January 2020 and is famous for being one of the first climate-neutral micro-mobility companies offering e-scooter, e-moped, and e-bike rentals. It aims to reduce emissions and give way to a sustainable future.

To start an e-scooter ride with Tier:

• Download the Tier app for iOS or Android.
• Launch the app and find an electric scooter Dubai near you.
• Scan the QR code to unlock the e-scooter and start your ride.
• When you’re done riding, park the e-scooter at one of the designated locations.
• Tap the “End Ride” option on the app to end the ride.

4. Lime Scooter Dubai

Another international e-scooter service operating in Dubai is Lime. Lime Scooter Dubai is famous for having Gen4 e-scooters with interchangeable, swappable batteries. The e-scooters have a wide footboard for a comfortable ride.

Lime’s aim is to provide safe, sustainable, and innovative mobility solutions to people looking to get from one place to another in a green and affordable way. At the moment, Lime Dubai only offers e-bikes and e-scooter rentals.

The cost of renting an e-scooter Dubai via Lime is AED 1 per minute, with a one-time charge of AED 3 to unlock.

What Does the Ferry From Sharjah to Dubai Cost

What to expect on board the Dubai to Sharjah Ferry

Unlike the small wooden abras you see floating along the Dubai Creek, this is a sleek, modern ferry service.

The comfortable seating can handle up to 84 passengers in Silver Class and 14 passengers in Gold Class (separated by opaque glass walls). There are bathrooms on board, free Wi-Fi, and a refreshments stall. And the boat is, of course, fully airconditioned for year-round comfort.

Your ferry journey takes you past the Al Shindagha Museum and historic district and the historic areas of Dubai Creek, which have been in existence for over 150 years. You’ll pass by the Waterfront Market area and Mamzar Park in Dubai before crossing into the Aquarium Station in Sharjah.

Ferry Connections

You can take an onward journey from Al Ghubaiba to Dubai Canal (daily at 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM) on the FR1 service. The fares are identical to the Dubai to Sharjah Ferry with Silver and Gold Class tickets but the timings really don’t work to catch both ferries in one day.

What is Salik in Dubai?

Salik is an electronic tag system launched by the RTA (Roads and Transport Authority) in 2007 to help reduce congestion on major roads.

The electronic tag is a thin sticker that is attached to your car windscreen. Every time you pass under a Salik toll bridge, a payment will be automatically deducted from your online Salik account.

There are presently 8 locations across the city that operate Salik toll gates. These are found on Shiekh Zayed Road (Jebel Ali, Al Barsha and Al Safa), as well as two on Al Ittihad Street (Al Mamzar), Al Gharoud Bridge, Al Maktoum Bridge, and Beirut Street (Airport Tunnel).

It was also announced early in 2024 that two new Salike gates will be installed at Al Safa Gate South and Business Bay Crossing.

Salik Price in Dubai

Every time you pass under a Salik toll gate, AED 4 is deducted from your account.

All tolls are operational 24 hours a day (though there are rumours abound in 2024 that they will introduce surge charging, similar to how rideshare services change have dynamic pricing).

There is no daily cap on how many tolls you will be charged for, however, there are a couple of exceptions:

• If you cross both of the Al Ittihad Street tolls within an hour in one direction, you’ll only be charged once.
• The Al Maktoum Bridge is free on Sundays from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM.

If you are using a rental vehicle your fixed charge per toll may be higher as the rental company will likely add an administrative fee (eg, Hertz charges you AED 5.25 per toll).

What if I am in a taxi?

Travelling in a taxi, AED 4 for every toll you pass during your journey will be added on to the metered fare.

What if my Salik balance has run out?

You will have a 5 day grace period to top up your account if you pass through a toll gate in Dubai without an active balance.

If you have not registered your vehicle, you get a 10 day grace period before you are fined.

How Do I Get My Car Set Up For Salik?

This will depend on whether you have a rental car or are driving your own vehicle.

Rental Cars in Dubai and Salik

The good news is that if you are renting a car in Dubai, all of the formalities of registering for Salik are taken care of for you by your rental car company. However, it’s important to note that the charges you incur for using toll roads will be charged back to you at the conclusion of your car rental period (plus, most likely, an admin fee).

Private Vehicles in the UAE

All private vehicles in the UAE, regardless of which Emirate your vehicle is registered in, must complete Salik registration before using one of the toll roads in Dubai or risk a fine.

You can pick up your Salik registration pack from any petrol station in Dubai Emirate (Emarat, EPPCO, ENOC and ADNOC). This includes an AED 50 per paid balance.

You can also order your Salik pack online to be delivered to your home/accommodation, but this will incur an AED 20 delivery fee, making your starting price AED 120 with AED 50 in credits loaded.

Once you have your pack, you’ll need an Emirates ID and your car registration card with a TC number handy to activate your account online, either using the Salike App (App Store | Google Play) or on the Salik website.

After your account is activated (you can only have one account per Emirates ID , but multiple vehicles can be attached to your account), you should immediately place the sticker on your windscreen in a place where your view is not obscured.

Reminders should be set once your account is active when your balance is running low. You can top up via the app or website, buy a Salik recharge card, or use cash deposit machines at participating banks.

What If I am driving inter-country?

If you are crossing land borders, for example, coming from Oman or Saudi Arabia by road, it’s still possible to buy a Salik pack from a petrol station and top up for the amount you will need.

What is the DARB Toll System

If you are using your car to drive to another emirate, namely Abu Dhabi, you are NOT covered for tolls in Abu Dhabi by Salik.

Abu Dhabi has its own toll system called DARB. DARB toll gates only operate during peak hours 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Monday to Saturday on the four main bridges that lead into Abu Dhabi island.

DARB worked on a number plate system rather than needing any sort of sticker or tag in your car. The good news for renters is again, your rental company takes care of the tolls as the vehicle will already be registered with DARB. Charges will come off at the conclusion of your rental.

NB – The big rental companies will most definitely have their cars registered for DARB and Salik. If you’re borrowing a car or using a budget rental car company, DO CHECK before driving that they have their vehicles properly registered and any potential hidden admin fees.

What is Emirates Dubai Connect?

Dubai Connect is a complimentary hotel service offered by Emirates for passengers who have a long layover between flights through Dubai International Airport (DXB). 

It comes with many terms and conditions, but with some careful planning, it can be a great and efficient service to get through a long layover in Dubai comfortably and smoothly – offering you a hotel room AND meals.

Who Can Avail Dubai Connect?

Dubai Connect Services are available to passengers with a connecting stopover time of 8 to 26 hours. This applies to passengers in Economy and Premium Economy (as well as Business/First Class Flights booked before 23 July 2023).

If you are flying Business or First Class with Emirates and booked your ticket AFTER 23 July 2023, you can now avail Dubai Connect with a stopover time of 6 to 26 hours.

These terms were last check with Emirates in October 2023

The itinerary must be a single booking ticketed on one ticket. The ticket must be issued on an Emirates (176) document or a Qantas (081) document.

Are you looking at sending your kids to Dubai to stay with relatives, or perhaps you live in Dubai and want the kids to go home to their family over the summer?

Whatever your reasons and needs for sending children alone on a flight, we know it can be a daunting prospect for both you and your child(ren).

But we have been there ourselves, needing to make these choices and putting our faith in Emirates Airlines to deliver our precious cargo. We can safely tell you from our own experience that it’s been a resounding success.

We have spoken to our fellow expat mums, too, who have sent kids to and from the UK, Australia, the USA and other countries in Europe, each with similar success stories to share. We’re going to share with you exactly how the Emirates Unaccompanied minor system works with real-life examples.

Who Can Fly as an Unaccompanied Minor With Emirates?

Let’s look at this by age group:

• Children aged 5 to 11 years old. The child must pay for a full-price adult ticket, and then the service is included as complimentary.

• You can still opt to use this service for a young person 12 to 15 years old. You have already paid for a full airfare from 12 years old; an additional fee (currently USD 50) is added to the ticket for each leg of your journey requiring the unaccompanied minor service – i.e. return trips USD 100.

• Note that it is optional for a Young Person, classified as a 12-15-year-old, to use the service; if they are confident enough to navigate international airports on their own or travel with someone over 16, you can avoid paying the fee, but they won’t get any perks such as lounge access and priority boarding.

• Under 5’s cannot fly as unaccompanied minors; they can only travel without their parents if they travel with another adult, classified as a person over 16 years old.

• If you want to sit in Business/First and leave the kids back in economy on their own (hey, no judgment here!), then you need to pay full fare for a child 5-11 years old, and they will be treated as unaccompanied minors.

What Are the Steps to Book Emirates Unaccompanied Minor?

If you have booked your kids’ flights online, contact the airline afterwards to confirm that they will be unaccompanied minors:

• If you originally booked them as kids (5-11 years old) and need to change to unaccompanied minors, be sure to contact Emirates in advance and pay the fare differential to an adult fare.

• If they are a young person (12-15 years old) be sure to call or go to a service centre and pay the fee for young persons, it will NOT automatically be included when the ticket is booked.

• There is, surprisingly, nothing else you need to do now until you get to the airport. They will be ready and waiting for you approximately 3 hours before your flight.

NB: You need to book the service any time from booking the ticket to 12 hours before departure (especially for 12-15 year olds); Don’t just turn up and expect to avail the service on the day; the airline has safety procedures to follow and are unlikely to accommodate last minute requests.

Some fine print to also be aware of:

• You can only use the unaccompanied minors service for young passengers (5 to 15 years old) when it’s an Emirates-operated flight, i.e. no codeshares.

• Maximum connection time, if required, is 4 hours, or 8 hours if the connection airport is DXB and they are boarding another Emirates flight.

• If they are flying internationally with Emirates, then connecting to a domestic airline, the guardian would need to pick the child up from the airport where the Emirates flight ends.

• If you have children in the 5-11 age group and 12-15, you will need to pay the young person fee if you’d like the kids to stick together; a 12-15-year-old cannot be classified as the younger ones guardian until they are over 16.

• If you cancel your flight and have separately paid the young person fee already, you cannot get a refund, so be certain about your flying date before paying.

• There are a few country-specific exceptions and rules on minor travel; make sure you check these before booking to ensure you can use the service to/from that country.

What Happens With Unaccompanied Minors on Emirates?

Leaving from Dubai International Airport (DXB), there is a separate check-in desk in Terminal 3 for unaccompanied minors (it sits between the main economy check-in and the Business/First check-in areas).

Parents or guardians will escort children to this separate check-in area and fill in declarations and any landing documentation that may be required. This is the point that you fill in the contact details for the adult collecting them.

The staff will print out boarding passes and tag their baggage; at this point they will retain your child’s passport and boarding passes and keep them in a labelled document wallet (siblings are kept together).

NB, if they are not quite ready to begin their solo adventure, once they are all checked in, they can stay with you land side until approximately 90 minutes before the flight when they must return to the Unaccompanied Minor check-in area.

From here, all children travelling unaccompanied in that time slot will move together to passport control, each child/set of siblings with their own document wallets with the Emirates crew member.

At this point, it’s time to say your goodbyes, and Emirates takes over for the rest of their journey.

After passport control, they will get time to enjoy the unaccompanied minors lounge (mine always complain not long enough!). Much like the adult lounges at DXB, though they have video games, free wifi and snack options. (Note, if they started in a different airport and are stopping over during a meal time in DXB, they’ll be fed in the same lounge).

Once their flight is boarding, they will be collected from the lounge by a crew member from their specific flight and given priority boarding. They will be placed in a row that is close to airline staff. They will try place them on their own or with a gap between other passengers but be aware of full flights, it’s not always possible.

** Note that the parent/guardian, per their stated rules, must stay at the airport until the flight has departed (though ground staff have told us differently on two occasions now, that once they have cleared immigration, you are able to leave the airport; UAE residents, you will no doubt get the ‘ping’ on your mobile letting you know when this has happened if they’re under your sponsorship).

Once the flight has taken off, I highly recommend nervous parents you download Flightrada24 Flight Tracker on your phone (Google Play | App Store) so you can track exactly where their flight is up to for your peace of mind!

Can I communicate with my child on board? Unless you want to invest in the expense and potential complications of your child attempting to use wifi on board, you won’t have any further communication with your child until they reach their guardians at the other end.

Landing Process For Unaccompanied Minors

Children are supported by crew throughout the landing process. They will likely need to wait until last to disembark with a crew member who will be carrying all their documentation and will see them through passport control and baggage collection.

Any landing documents you need should be filled out by the parent before landing and will come with the crew member in charge in an envelope along with their passports – if you can’t access or don’t fill in a landing card this can be time consuming and difficult for the staff as they’ll need to pry the answers out of your no doubt nervous child!

After they have their baggage, the crew member will see them through to arrivals, where the responsible guardian at the other end will sign off that they have taken custody of the child.

Make sure the collecting adult/guardian has photo identification with them!

Make sure they snap a photo of your solo voyagers and send it straight to you, and they can go about their new adventure!

What About Other UAE Airlines

Air Arabia and Fly Dubai do not allow unaccompanied minors under the age of 12, unless they are accompanied by another passenger who is at least 16 years old.

There are several different ways you can connect from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, some are slow but free, yes, FREE! Other options will get you there door to door but come at a cost.

Dubai to Abu Dhabi – Emirates Complimentary Coach

If you’ve landed at DXB with Emirates, but your end destination is Abu Dhabi, you can book your airline ticket to end in Abu Dhabi and cover the last 160kms or so by ground transportation in a luxury coach.

When booking your airline ticket with Emirates, you simply need to enter your end destination as ZVJ. (Note Emirates does not fly directly to AUH airport, only DXB).

Your Abu Dhabi arrival point is outside the Emirates Abu Dhabi office in Khalidiya, on the Corniche.

Note that you still need to clear customs and collect your bags in Dubai Airport Terminal 3 before making your way to the coach service, parked in the same arrivals pick up zone as the taxis.

The bus runs five times a day (as of September 2023), and you will be allocated a seat at the same time you are issued your airline ticket. 

If your ticket only takes you to DXB, not ZVJ, you can call Emirates to add this service later after booking your ticket, but it MUST be pre-booked to guarantee your seat.

These are the current timings from DXB – you’ll want to give yourself at least an hour from disembarking and getting through immigration and customs.

Using an Airport Taxi from DXB to Abu Dhabi

Airport taxis from Dubai Airport to Abu Dhabi are surprisingly efficient. It depends a bit on the vehicle size and how far into Abu Dhabi you’re travelling, but you can expect a standard taxi from the airport to cost around 350-400 AED and more like 500 – 550 AED if you need a 7 seater.

A standard Dubai taxi can only take a maximum of 4 passengers with 2 large pieces of luggage or 4 small cases. You’ll pay a 25 AED airport flagfall.

If you have a larger group, you’ll need an airport limousine. These cost an extra 1 AED per KM – which, over the 160 kilometres or so to Abu Dhabi, can quickly add up. There’s not much choice, though, with five passengers and luggage (beyond private services, which we’ll touch on below), so be prepared to pay more than 500 AED to get to Abu Dhabi in an airport limousine (these are usually Mercedes vans, not stretch limos!)

Worried about car seats for kids? Infant car seats can be borrowed on a complimentary basis from the taxi rank at DXB. Look out for this cabinet in the taxi queue (or ask staff to direct you). the taxi driver simply returns the seat when they next return to the airport.

If you’d asked me just 15 years ago about staying in Dubai Marina, I probably would have laughed that it’s a bit far from the airport and a bit of a concrete jungle…

Well, times have changed, and yes, Dubai Marina IS some distance away from DXB (about 30 minutes in a taxi – no traffic); however, no longer a soulless concrete jungle, it has taken on a heart and soul of its own and is the perfect spot to base yourself for a longer vacation stay in Dubai, or if you simply like hanging out around amazing urban scenery and nightlife.

Where to Find Dubai Marina & How to Get Around

Dubai Marina sits on the Arabian Gulf coast to the west of Palm Jumeirah. It is 33kms away from DXB Airport, about 30 minutes off-peak along Sheikh Zayed Road E11, but it can take longer if there’s heavy traffic.

Dubai Marina Metro

You can get to Dubai Marina by Careem/Taxi, or it’s possible to access Dubai Marina from the Red Line Metro. The two most convenient stops are DMCC Station 1 and DAMAC Properties Metro, which also connect with the Dubai Tram.

Dubai Marina Tram

The Dubai Tram services the whole of the Dubai Marina area in a circular loop and then continues onward to Dubai Media City area and Knowledge Village. It can be a quick and convenient way to get from A to B – assuming it’s heading in the direction you need!

Otherwise, sometimes it can be quicker to tackle distances on foot; along the waterfront, you can avoid the traffic lights that the trams need to stop at.

The Dubai Tram is a convenient way to connect with the Palm Monorail, though note the Palm Monorail is privately operated by Nakheel, not part of the Dubai RTA transport system that uses Nol card, so separate (quite hefty) fees are applicable.

Where to Stay in Dubai Marina / JBR

The terms Dubai Marina and JBR area of the city might be used quite interchangeably, though there are some subtle differences. Dubai Marina refers to the area as a whole, whereas JBR – Jumeirah Beach Residence – is a series of buildings that sit between the marina and the beach. On the northern side of the Marina, you are in JBR.

Dubai Marina Apartments

The Dubai Marina area is best known for its offering of apart-hotels and Airbnb options which gives travellers a little more room and flexibility with kitchenettes and laundry facilities frequently on offer.

Dubai Marina Beach Resorts

So, on to the fun stuff! Whether you’ve chosen to stay in Dubai Marina or simply want to enjoy what’s on offer for a day or the evening, here are some Dubai Marina attractions and activities to seek out:

Dubai Marina Cruise

One of the main reasons tourists head to Dubai Marina is as a departure point for cruises onto the Arabian Gulf waters. There is a wide variety of companies offering cruise services, so you need to think about:

• How long do you want to be out on the water for?
• Size and speed of the craft (speed boat or a more sedate luxury cruise)
• How many people will be in your tour group?
• How far you want to go, some stay pretty close to the marina and the Palm, while others will make a much longer loop up to Burj Al Arab and further east along Jumeirah Beach.

Here’s a selection of different ideas to get you started:

Although there are many cruise providers, we recommend booking through a reputable ticketing agent such as Get Your Guide who has a money-back guarantee, should your travel plans be changed it’s excellent to have this flexibility.

Dubai Marina Mall

Much of the activity of Dubai Marina revolves around the Dubai Marina Mall—relatively small in Dubai terms, but a beautifully set-out shopping experience. You’ll find everything from your favourite beachwear brands to a big supermarket (ideal for grabbing a little gourmet picnic along the waterfront).

Dubai Marina Zipline

Fancy taking on XLine Dubai? The world’s longest urban zip line will see you soaring from Amwaj Towers back to Dubai Marina Mall at speeds up to 80km/hr. The tandem lines mean you can even race your friends and family for some of the city’s most incredible urban views.

The Walk & The Beach

Closely connected to Dubai Marina is the famous Dubai location of The Walk and The Beach. The Walk is a retail promenade with plenty of dining, shopping and entertainment options.

The Beach is the public beachfront for JBR, to stroll along the beach and pull up a towel is completely free. If you wish to take advantage of any of the dozens of leisure attractions along here, from Flying Cup sky-high dining (pictured) to the inflated obstacle course Aqua Fun, these come at an additional fee – as do the beach chairs with parasol.

Bluewaters Island

Bluewaters is situated close to Dubai Marina, though not directly connected. You can access Bluewaters on foot if you head to the very end of The Beach; there is a pedestrian walkway across the water to Bluewaters.

Alternatively, you can access Bluewaters by water taxi from Dubai Marina.

Bluewaters is home to a brand new dining and entertainment district as well as Ain Dubai – the largest observation wheel in the world – it’s a really fun new place to hand out with an ever-improving lineup of fun casual to fine dining choices.

Bluewaters is also home to Cove Beach, so if you’re staying in an apartment but would prefer to enjoy some private beachfront action away from the public crowds on The Beach, this is a top spot to head.

Should you include Dubai Marina on your Dubai Vacation?

Whether you plan to visit for a day or make Dubai Marina the base point of your Dubai vacation experience, you won’t be disappointed – it’s definitely worth the extra travel time to come to a newer part of the city.

Do make sure you make time to get beyond the city too, experience a day or evening trip into the desert, pop down to neighbouring Abu Dhabi and you’ll get a great all-round Dubai experience in the heart of the tourist action.

If you are not big into skyrises and urban lifestyle – that’s OK; we know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea – Dubai Marina may not be the best choice for you. Perhaps look into one of the city’s larger and more sprawling tropical beach resorts or check out accommodation in the older parts of Dubai around Bur Dubai and Dubai Creek.
