Dubai Municipality Ramadan Souq in Bur Deira

This is a good one to attend in the run-up to Ramadan, noting that it’s actually scheduled to stop before the Holy Month starts.

Many locally will be making their Ramadan preparations by heading to this outdoor souq held on Old Municipality Street in Bur Deira. This souq will offer shoppers a unique range of products, including kitchen essentials, fabrics, and traditional food items.

Visitors can also enjoy entertainment and family-friendly activities. This is a great spot for visitors to Dubai during March to understand more about the culture and community surrounding Ramadan, as well as supporting the city’s traditional market traders.

Ramadan Street Food Festival

The Sheikh Hamdan Colony will be transformed this Ramadan with colourful decorations and more than 130 vendor kiosks serving all manner of south Asian street foods from February 19th to February 28th.

From the 28th February the focus will shift to entertainment and live activations until Eid.

Hai Ramadan at Expo City

February 22nd until March 17th 2026; 5:00 pm to midnight

The market held in Al Wasl Plaza will host a mix of culture, tradition, and family-friendly activities with food outlets, handmade crafts, traditional garments, and Ramadan-themed items.

There are various iftar offerings at Hai Ramadan this year including a refined seated experience at ‘Iftar Al Majlis’ and a street-food iftar package at ‘Iftar Al Souk’.

Guests can also enjoy seeing the Al Wasl dome come alive with light projections that tell stories rooted in Ramadan tradition.

This will also be one of seven locations in Dubai where you can see the Iftar cannon fired.

Before You Head to a Dubai Ramadan Market

It is important to remember that Ramadan is a time for spiritual reflection and togetherness. While these Dubai Ramadan events are by no means limited to the Muslim community, please be mindful that you are attending a religious occasion in an Islamic country.

Whilst Dubai may come across as ‘business as usual’ these days during the Holy Month, please be mindful when attending a Ramadan event where you are; dress appropriately for the occasion and refrain from eating and drinking around those fasting until after sunset.

1. Kayali Majlis

One of the Five Pillars of Worship of Islam – Saum – is the act of fasting during this holy month.  Muslims must abstain from eating and drinking (among other things) between sunrise and sunset to teach themselves self-awareness, patience, and tolerance. Always a fun way to mark National Day in the UAE, Dubai Global Village will be putting on special shows to mark Eid al Etihad from 27 November -3 December this year.

This year’s celebration will honour the theme of unity and will boast magnificent decorations as well as 10 cultural installations. There will be chances to learn about local handicrafts and try local foods, as well as enjoy the festive ambience. Visitors can also enjoy a variety of performances, including ‘from the desert to the stars’, between the 1st and 3rd December.

On the 1st and 2nd December, there will be a UAE-themed drone show and fireworks to really celebrate the occasion!

Dubai Garden Glow

This spectacular nighttime light display has taken place in Zabeel Park for the past 10 years. A unique theme park in Dubai that combines the beauty of art, light, and eco-friendly innovations. It features luminous displays, sculptures, and installations crafted using thousands of energy-saving bulbs and yards of recycled luminous fabric.

The big change for 2025-26 is that they are relocating! It’s a closely guarded secret where, but all will be revealed this October, so stay tuned for what to expect this winter and which elements from the previous garden will be transferred to the new venue.

Dubai Safari Park

A unique animal experience run by Dubai Municipality, the 119-hectare open-air park on the city’s outskirts closes over the hottest months. Home to over 3,000 animals, the park consists of five sections: African Village, Asian Village, Arabian Desert Safari, Explorer Village, and the Valley.

In addition to day pass entry tickets, you can upgrade to more intimate new experiences, such as Dine in the Wild and Behind the Scenes, which offer a closer look at the family care services provided to the animals that call the safari park home.

Hatta Wadi Hub

The emirate’s adventure playground, Hatta Wadi Hub, is nestled in the Hajar Mountains, 90 minutes south of Dubai city.

Cooler weather brings back serene desert glamping experiences, adrenaline-pumping adventure activities, and fun family experiences, including zorbing, archery, tubing, big plunge trampolines, and an Aerial Adventure Park.

Other additions to look out for include a giant swing, a 45-degree zipline, a free-fall zone, and a high ropes course.

Dubai Fountains

Open date: 1 October 2025

Now, this attraction is technically open year-round; however, after a 6-month closure, it deserves a special spot on our re-opening list for winter 2025.

Extensive renovations have been underway in Downtown Dubai this summer to upgrade the world’s most spectacular fountain show with enhanced sound and lighting as well as improved choreography.

• Shows take place nightly from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm, every 30 minutes, and last 5 minutes
• There are lunchtime shows at 1:00 pm and 1:30 pm (2:00 pm and 2:30 pm Fridays)

The show is free to watch from anywhere around Burj Lake, or you can take an abra ride onto the lake for a close-up view.

What is it like for a woman living in Dubai?

As an expat woman living in the UAE, I have always been treated with the utmost respect. I feel safer in the UAE than I do in my home country. I feel that I can walk down a street without harassment or abuse. Nobody catcalls, nobody stares, nobody talks in a way that demeans me. I still don’t walk along quiet, unfamiliar streets in the dark, but walking around my little corner of the city, I feel pretty safe any time of day.

In general, women are held in high esteem in the UAE. Fifty percent of the UAE Federal National Council and over 30% of the Cabinet of the UAE are female. Women are celebrated in festivals such as the ‘Mother of the Nation’ event in Abu Dhabi, and the UAE makes a big deal of International Women’s Day.

Like other areas of the world, girls are outperforming boys in many school subjects and are pursuing higher education to become doctors, architects, engineers, teachers, accountants, and other professionals. Over 70% of University graduates in the UAE are women.

The UAE is home to over 200 different nationalities. Everybody brings with them different traditions and philosophies. Some families are more conservative than others, but the UAE promotes a progressive and empowering stance towards women and their rights. Do women have to cover up in Dubai?

Women are not legally required to cover themselves from wrist to ankle or wear a head scarf like they are in some other Muslim countries. In fact, the UAE only really asks women to dress respectably. That means covering the shoulders and knees when in shopping centers and some other public areas.

The rules are different if you’re visiting a mosque (in which case you must cover from wrist to ankle and wear a head covering). This caveat (arms and legs covered) also applies to some government buildings, such as police stations and government departments.

You should avoid wearing swimwear when away from the beach, but strappy dresses and shorter skirts are permitted in restaurants, tourist hotels, beach clubs, nightclubs, and at many establishments that offer ladies’ nights. Most bars and restaurants have dress codes, so it is always best to check in advance before heading out for the night.

But I saw women wearing very little on Instagram…

What you see on Instagram is not the real Dubai. Most Dubai residents dress respectfully. Whilst Dubai is less conservative than the other Emirates, there is still a boundary between what is acceptable and what is not. As a general rule of thumb, try to wear a knee-length skirt and longer shorts or trousers.

Always carry something like a shawl or cardigan to cover your shoulders if requested. It’s also best to avoid boob tubes, crop tops, or anything strapless in public places such as shopping malls and theme parks.

Can I visit Dubai with my male partner, even though we’re not married?

Yes. You can legally stay in Dubai with your male partner, even if you’re not married. This includes residents as well as visitors, provided neither partner is Muslim or legally married to someone else. Before 2020, it was illegal for non-married couples to live together, although it was a relatively common practice.

Is Dubai safe for women?

Dubai is a very safe city – much safer for women than most other cities around the world. In general there is a very low risk of assault or petty theft.

The Dubai workforce is more than 80% expatriate, with a large proportion of this workforce made up of men from the Indian subcontinent. Conversely, the population of Dubai is less than 25% female. Whilst women may sometimes feel like men are looking at them, this is often out of genuine fascination, rather than with some ulterior motive.

Most of these gents haven’t seen their wives or children in some time, and many of them will be bewildered by the morning onslaught of Lycra-clad ladies queuing up to do burpees. The UAE has a comprehensive and strict set of harassment laws, and any woman who feels threatened can lodge a case. The law, alongside a cultural moral code, makes sure that women feel safe.

That’s not to say that assault never happens; it is unlikely, but not impossible. It can, of course, happen anywhere, but if perpetrators in the UAE are caught, they will be punished with the full force of the law. That said, in the not-too-distant past, there have been stories of women being arrested when set upon by men, usually because the woman was intoxicated.

We ARE NOT condoning this as an excuse, but it is really important to be aware that although drinking alcohol is permitted at certain licensed venues in the city, public intoxication is not.

There have also been multiple stories of women being lured to private parties, with offers of fancy gifts and favours. Again, this can happen anywhere. We recommend that all women traveling anywhere in the world alone adopt a common-sense approach, and if something offered by a stranger sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Should women be wary of public transport in Dubai?

You’re very unlikely to come up against a problem when using the city’s bus and Metro system. The Metro even has ladies’ only compartments – not because it needs them, but to make women feel a bit more comfortable.

All forms of public transport are equipped with security cameras, including public taxis, which ensures that everyone is behaving appropriately.

If you are a woman travelling alone and using a taxi or Uber, particularly at night, it is always best to exercise the same caution that you would in your home country. Whilst something is very unlikely to happen, it’s always best to play it safe.

Can women drive in Dubai?

Yes, women are allowed to drive in Dubai. It is possible to hire a car using a recognised international driving license for a short time.

If you intend to stay in Dubai long-term, you will need to obtain a UAE driving license. For many nationalities, this simply involves submitting your existing documents and undergoing a vision test. You can find out more about driving in the UAE here.

Can women work in Dubai?

Yes, many women work in Dubai. As previously mentioned, over 30% of the UAE’s national cabinet are female. Women work in a wide range of roles, from teacher to lab chemist to company CEO.

To be able to work in the UAE, you do, however, need the correct visa. For ladies moving to the country with a working spouse, you can work but may require a letter of no objection, sometimes referred to as an NOC, from your husband if you are sponsored on his visa. Even this is becoming less common as workplaces and employers in Dubai evolve.

Is it easy to travel to Dubai as a single mother?

Yes. It’s very easy to travel to Dubai as a single mother. The only thing you may need is a letter from the children’s biological father stating that you have his permission for the children to travel. I also carry such a letter as I often travel without my husband.

Obviously, this is not always possible, so it may be prudent to carry other relevant documentation, such as copies of birth certificates, adoption papers, or death certificates. Being asked for papers is becoming more widespread globally to reduce human trafficking and child abduction.

Once in Dubai, navigating the city as a single mother is relatively easy. Most taxi companies provide cabs with child seats if needed, and the public transportation system is excellent. Dubai has lots to keep both young and older kids busy.

Shopping malls, beaches, and theme parks generally have excellent facilities for families with young children. In the most modern malls, there are baby changing facilities in both the female and male washrooms, as well as separate baby rooms. Older malls all have changing facilities either in or adjacent to the ladies’ washroom. Some malls could benefit from more lifts/elevators for people traveling with strollers, but by and large, this is not a significant problem.

Hidden Gems in Dubai City

Within a city with several million, you can be sure there are plenty of small neighbourhood coffee shops, parks, and gardens that don’t often capture the eye of tourists but might be well-known by the locals.

Alserkal Avenue

This is definitely becoming more well-known, but it’s still frequently overlooked. This forward-thinking arts and cultural district is located in the Al Quoz area of the city.

Featuring homegrown and international talent Al Serkal is home to a variety of permanent galleries, immersive installations, and temporary exhibits, and includes everything from modern sculptures to intricate Indo-Persian miniatures.

You’ll also find the cosy and quirky Cinema Akil, which brings art-house movies from around the world and across the ages to Dubai.

Courtyard Playhouse

Al Quoz, although quite industrial on the exterior, contains many hidden gems, including kids’ play areas like the innovative OliOli as well as the Courtyard Playhouse. The Block

This park located in District 3 (Dubai Design District) offers a whimsical escape from the hustle and bustle of Dubai. The Block features, a huge skatepark, open air basketball and volleyball courts, climbing walls and an urban beach, as well as excellent play facilities for younger children.

Found on the city’s outskirts (though increasingly being sandwiched into urban Dubai), it’s hard to believe such an oasis exists in the desert. Definitely worth the drive out if you’re after one of the city’s more unique dining experiences.

Jumeirah Fishing Harbor 1

With the feel of a small fishing harbour village, Jumeirah Harbour is the perfect place to relax and unwind at the end of a busy day. Enjoy watching the sunset as you tuck into a delicious meal in one of the nearby cafés or restaurants.

Quranic Park

Nestled in suburban Al Khawaneej, the beautiful Quranic Park is the perfect place to gain wonderful insights into the Holy Quran.

The 64-hectare park includes two main attractions, the ‘Glass House’, a temperature-controlled greenhouse for plants, and ‘Cave of Miracles’, a man-made cave illustrating some essential stories from the Quran.

The park itself is free to enter (a strict dress code is enforced in keeping with the religious nature of the park), however, the two attractions have a small entry fee of AED 5 each, which can be paid with Nol.

Iranian mosque

The Imam Hussein Mosque in Satwa is a stunning example of Shia architecture. The blue tiled (Kashani) decorative niches contrast sharply with the cool and understated mosques more typical of the region.

The mosque is open to visitors with guided tours at 8.00am and 1.00pm. All visitors are kindly reminded to dress appropriately. Ladies should be covered from their wrists to their ankles in loose-fitting clothing. Female visitors are also advised to wear a headscarf.

Men should dress respectfully in long trousers and a shirt or a t-shirt. If you do not have suitable clothing, robes are available for borrowing, subject to availability.

The Camel Farm (Dubai)

No trip to the UAE is complete unless you’ve got at least one photo of a camel. These fluffy desert natives really have come to epitomise the culture of the country whose original Bedouin residents relied on camels to carry them from place to place and to provide wool and sustenance in the harshest of environments.

A trip to the Camel Farm offers so much more than camel rides, although these are available should you want to see the desert by the region’s most traditional mode of transport. Visitors can also participate in Camel Therapy which includes a camel hugging session.

The farm is home to a number of other animals, and children can enjoy feeding and petting donkeys, rabbits, and chickens. The Camel Farm is open every day except Monday (Tuesday to Thursday 2.00 pm until 5.00 pm and Friday to Sunday 10.00 am until 5.00 pm). They seasonally close to visitors over the hottest months from June to October.

Wadi Showka

Offering a peaceful escape from the city, deep in the Hajar Mountains, is the beautiful Wadi Showka. This seasonal watercourse includes a number of natural pools as well as a man-made reservoir and features a hiking trail which is well-known to UAE residents.

The best time to visit is during the winter months when the pools are likely to be full and the cooler temperatures make for a more comfortable hike. The trail does include a lot of steps and some sections which are a little unstable underfoot so remember to dress appropriately.

While toilets are available, be sure to carry plenty of water and snacks to keep you going throughout the day.

Sail to Moon Island

Located approximately 60 km off the coast of Dubai, Moon Island offers a tranquil escape from the urban sprawl. Many companies offer boat trips that include a barbecue and drinks, one of the best is with Sea Escape DXB.

Liwa Oasis (Abu Dhabi)

If you’ve grown up with romantic images of the desert and want to indulge in the magic of the Arabian Nights, then a trip to the Liwa Desert is a must. For those wishing to push the boat out for a truly exceptional experience, we recommend a stay at Ananatara’s Qasr Al Sarab.

If you don’t want to blow the budget completely, it is possible to stay at a more economical desert resort, or take a 1 day desert safari. However, you will miss out if you don’t stay overnight in this utterly beautiful setting.

Khor Fakkan (Sharjah East Coast)

Khor Fakkan, a small town on the East Coast (an exclave of Sharjah), has gained popularity in recent years and now features many interesting and worthwhile places to visit.

The white sandy beaches of Khor Fakkan have long been a draw for visitors and locals alike; however, other local features, such as the Al Rafisah Dam, Wadi Shees, and the Khor Fakkan waterfalls, are now also attracting tourists in large numbers.

As an area of outstanding natural beauty, the mountains of Khor Fakkan are well worth hiring a car for a visit. You’ll be rewarded with some breathtaking views and a completely different perspective of the UAE.

Note that Sharjah (including Khor Fakkan) is a ‘dry state’ and that carrying and consuming alcohol here is prohibited.

Hatta Dam (Dubai)

Hatta Dam is a serene mountain reservoir situated in the Hajar Mountains, approximately a 90-minute drive from central Dubai. Surrounded by rocky hills and calm, clear waters, it’s a popular spot for kayaking, paddle boating, and enjoying scenic views.

Originally built to help with water storage and electricity for the Hatta region, the dam is now a popular weekend getaway for both residents and visitors seeking to relax in nature, go hiking, or explore the surrounding heritage village and mountain trails.

It’s a refreshing contrast to Dubai’s fast-paced city life and absolutely glorious in the winter months.

Al Madam Abandoned Village (Sharjah)

Known as the Al Madam Ghost Village, this abandoned village, half buried in sand, is something a little bit quirky to add into your Dubai holiday schedule. Whilst some believe the village was abandoned because of supernatural occurrences, others will tell you that people left because of the frequent sandstorms and more attractive housing prospects in the city.

Definitely worth a stop if you’re on your way to Hatta, or as part of a desert safari. Wear sensible footwear and take plenty of water. And If you’re visiting on a winter weekend don’t expect to be the only one to find this ‘hidden gem’.

Hatta Honey Bee Garden (Dubai)

Hatta is gaining in popularity as an adventurous escape from Dubai, but aside from the dam with its hiking opportunities and water sports, there are plenty of interesting stops to be had on the way. These include the Al Madam village mentioned above, and our current favourite, the Hatta Honey Bee Garden.

The Hatta Honey Bee Garden and Discovery Centre is the first of its kind in the region and offers a unique blend of education and adventure. With over 300 active beehives amidst a garden of vibrant flora the garden offers the perfect opportunity to learn about sustainable beekeeping, and the vital role that bees play in our ecosystem.

The centre offers guided tours, workshops, and hands-on activities and is open from 9.00 am until 5.00 pm daily.

Ramadan in Dubai

It’s important to observe each year when the Holy Month of Ramadan – the 9th month on the Hijri calendar will occur (the start date changes by approximately 10 days on the Gregorian calendar each year). This is a period of deep religious reflection for Muslims and is strictly observed.

Ramadan in 1447 will start approximately 18 Februaryans end on approx 20 March 2026. 

It used to be a time when strict daytime fasting was observed in the UAE and a much more stringent modest dress code followed. However, in recent years the rules and social norms have become significantly more flexible.

Now that Ramadan falls during the cooler, peak tourism months, you’ll find almost all venues aimed at tourists now stay open throughout Ramadan, as do many daytime dining establishments, to the point where you may not even realise its Ramadan!

This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still show respect for those who are fasting around you and moderate your behaviour. Its a fabulous opportunity to join with iftar (the evening breaking of the fast), learn more about the Islamic culture at venues such as SMCCU and partake in overnight festivities such as suhoor and late-night shopping are great reasons to visit at this time of year.

Noor Festival of Lights

This multi-day family event at Al Seef is a multisensory celebration you won’t want to miss! It will start with a grand procession on Friday evening and continue over the weekend with loads of interactive experiences along the 1.8km long promenade beside Dubai Creek.

Expect delicious food, hands-on workshops, traditional diya painting, and rangoli making. There will also be a Diwali market with authentic Indian snacks and handcrafted goods available for purchase.

Dubai is often mistaken as the UAE’s capital, but, in fact, it is neighbouring Abu Dhabi that holds this crown. Home to the country’s Federal Supreme Council and President of the UAE, HH Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed al Nahyan, it’s also home to some of the country’s most magnificent architecture and cultural sites.

So many stops that it is challenging to see them all on a Dubai day trip, but here are a few that we recommend you should try to fit into a single-day trip from Dubai:

2. Best Dubai Day Trip: Musandam Peninsula, Oman

Dubai to Khasab distance: 196km / approx 2.5 hours

Transporting you to a whole different country but within reasonable driving distance from Dubai, the “Norway of Arabia” awaits in the Omani exclave of Musandam. Sitting to the northeast of the northern Emirate Ras Al Khaimah, the regional capital of Khasab, Musandam can be easily reached by road – an incredibly picturesque and often breathtaking coastal drive.

From Khasab, there is a small harbour with a plentiful choice of traditional dhow boats and more modern cruising vessels. Sail out to the stunning rocky fjords where the Hajar Mountains that run through the length of Oman and the UAE dramatically end at the Strait of Hormuz.

Dolphin spotting is a favourite activity and in the warmer shoulder season, snorkelling and scuba diving are popular, albeit the better diving is on the eastern coast of the peninsula.

You will want an early start to fit in a full day of fun, and taking an organised day tour, they will help you with the Omani visas and border crossing process. It is possible to hire a car and do it all alone, but first-timers will no doubt appreciate a guide to take you through the Al Darah border crossing point and the formalities involved.

Recommended Day Tours from Dubai to Dibba

If you do not want the formality of crossing the border, it’s also possible to take a dhow cruise to a different part of the Musandam coast, coming via Fujairah and the east coast of the UAE to an area known as Dibba.

Your boats here do not need to make a formal land crossing into Oman, so no border crossing is required. However, you will still be richly rewarded with dramatic coastal views.

3. Best Dubai Day Trip: Al Ain

Dubai to Al Ain distance: approximately 130km / 1 hour 30 mins

Sitting southwest of Dubai, you will find the Oasis City of Al Ain. With deep historical roots believed to date back to the Neolithic period, this is our top-pick day trip for history lovers. You will find the UAE’s only UNESCO World Heritage sites scattered in several locations across the city – a full guide to these sites can be found here.

Much of the country’s more recent history also stems from the township of Al Ain, the hometown of the country’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan al Nahyan, and the birthplace of the second ruler of Abu Dhabi and the UAE, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed al Nahyan.

Well-worth visiting spots include Al Jahili Fort, Qasr al Mawaji, Al Ain National Museum (closed indefinitely for renovations), and the Al Ain Palace Museum (the former Royal homestead – closed from Summer 2024 for renovations). 

You may also be fascinated by the supposedly healing hot springs of Al Mubazzarah, at the foot of Abu Dhabi Emirate’s tallest peak, Jebel Hafeet.

Those travelling with kids will definitely want to try and squeeze in a trip to the Al Ain Zoo too. The best in the country, the zoo is set on large grounds with many new installations worth a trip of its own, including the Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre, which is perfect for history lovers of all ages with lots of interactive displays.

You can make the trip to the historic center of Al Ain, in approximately 1.5 hours from Dubai. However, if you plan a trip up the winding road to the top of Jebel Hafeet, add another 40 minutes. You will be rewarded with spectacular views over Al Ain and neighbouring Oman.

If you are unfamiliar with the UAE roads, it is recommended that you join an organized group to get between the highlights, as the city is well spread out.

4. Best Dubai Day Trip: Ras Al Khaimah

Dubai to Ras al Khaimah distance: approximately 110kms / 1 hour 15 minutes

Ras al Khaimah – affectionately referred to as RAK, is best known as the UAE’s outdoor adventure playground. The stunning Hajar Mountains range runs through the Emirate and is home to the country’s tallest peak, Jebel Jais.

Jebel Jais is an adrenaline junkie’s dream, with plenty of new attractions being added every year. The world’s longest zipline allows you to speed up to 150km/hr 1680m above sea level for nearly 3kms. You can also experience Via Ferrata and the newest additions, the Jebel Jais Sky Tour – 7 different courses over 5kms through the mountains (Closed Mondays and Tuesdays).

6. Best Dubai Day Trip: Yas Island Theme Parks

Dubai to Yas Island distance: approximately 115km / 1 hour

Arguably, the UAE’s best theme parks can be found on Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island, only around 45 minutes from Dubai Marina or an hour from Downtown Dubai down the E11 Freeway, you can easily spend a whole day – or ideally two if you are going to enjoy everything on offer.

The four big theme parks on Yas Island are:

• Yas Waterworld (outdoor water park)
• Ferrari World (indoor adrenaline and Italian-themed park)
• Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi (indoor theme park based on DC Comic characters and Looney Toon favourites)
• SeaWorld Yas Island (Indoor marine park)

Each is a top-rated attraction with plenty of thrill rides and entertainment, and there are limited lines for large parts of the year.

Top Tip: Yas Island has a small plaza of hotels and restaurants, as well as the lively Yas Marina and Yas Bay waterfront entertainment districts. It is well worth an overnight trip at least to this adventure-filled island to experience everything on offer.

7. Best Dubai Day Trip: Hatta

Dubai to Hatta distance: approximately 105km / 1 hour 20 minutes

One of the most exciting destinations in the Dubai Emirate is the area of Hatta and Hatta Dam. Sitting south of Dubai near the Omani border, a large amount of tourism development has been poured into this rugged area of the Emirate to create a brand new nature playground.

This destination offers so much, especially for outdoor enthusiasts. After exploring the Heritage Village, try kayaking or mountain biking, and enjoy the adventure sports at Hatta Wadi Hub and the Hatta Jump water park.

For an unforgettable experience, extend your stay overnight to stay at the Hatta Damani Lodges or stay in an Eco Dome Tent at Hatta Wadi Hub. They are limited in number, though, so book well in advance if you’re looking at a winter weekend. They are available only in the winter season.

Dubai School Holidays 2025

There is both a public (MoE) and private (international) school sector in Dubai, governed by KHDA (Knowledge and Human Development Authority). The dates they have stipulated as holidays in a three-term school year for September starting curriculums are:

• Winter Break 16 December to 5 January 2025 (schools return 6 January 2025)
• Spring Break 24 March to 6 April 2025 (International Schools) 13 April MoE Schools
• Summer Break Not before 27 June 2025 until approximately 25 August 2025*

*The end of summer break is only anticipated until formally announced by the Government.

What Do I Need to Know as a Visitor to Dubai During Eid?

Eid Al Adha is the Festival of the Sacrifice.  It is the second and holier of the two occasions of Eid, marked by Muslims worldwide. (The other Eid is Eid ul-Fitr, marking the end of the Holy Month of Ramadan).

It begins on the 10th day of Dhu Al Hijjah, which is the 12th and final month in the Hijri (Islamic) calendar. It is usually marked by large family gatherings and shared meals.

As a non-Muslim, there is nothing visitors to Dubai really need to observe during Eid, but do note it can be a much busier time of year.

Retail outlets may stay open until much later at night (or even 24 hours), and accommodation prices can rise significantly with an influx of regional tourism. It’s also a popular time of year for local families to take staycations.

It’s a hectic time of year at DXB airport as many use the long weekend to visit family and friends overseas.

“Dry Nights” in Dubai

By order of the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), bars and restaurants in Dubai will cease selling alcohol during religious occasions.

This DID NOT happen in the pat 3 years, so as we understand it, dry nights in Dubai will no longer be applied for religious occasions.

(NB, Abu Dhabi emirate stopped the practice of dry nights over religious occasions some years ago; we suspect Dubai may follow suit – but please be prepared that this may happen)

Eid al-Adha Fireworks in Dubai

We are still awaiting official word on fireworks and celebrations that will take place during Eid 2026, events listed below relate to 2025. We will update this guide closer to the dates when events are announced for 2026.

Riverland Dubai

Fireworks will take place on June 16th and 17th at 9:15 PM. From June 16th to 21st, there will also be daily laser light shows at Riverland at 7:30 pm, 8:20 pm, and 9:30 pm.

Let’s turn the clock back to what Dubai is all about.  Unlike much of the rest of the country of the United Arab Emirates which was made up of little more than fishing and pearl-diving villages prior to the discovery of oil in the 1960s, Dubai has been an active port city for well over a century.

Dubai grew significantly in the late 19th-century as tax exemption rules were brought in, encouraging a large foreign workforce and traders to arrive en masse to the port city set up on Dubai Creek. The city has earned various nicknames over the years including “The City of Merchants” and “The City of Gold”.

As generations have passed, the city has certainly changed in population and industry, but one thing it has kept its reputation for is retail trade! Dubai Creek is as bustling as ever as a trading port, albeit cargo ships now dock at the much larger Jebel Ali Port. Smaller dhows can still be found in their dozens unloading their goods in Deira.

While the traditional souks of Old Dubai in Deira still exist today, vast modern shopping malls have become the place to shop in Dubai. Bargain hunters will know, however, that you need to scratch below the surface for Dubai’s best buys.

Whilst the UAE now has a value added tax on goods sold of 5%, there are still plenty of shopping bargains to be had in Dubai, you’ve just got to find the right places to shop.

Best Places to Shop in Dubai

Modern Dubai

In modern Dubai, the best place to shop is the Dubai Mall. This is the single largest mall in the world, with over 1,200 shops. You can find virtually anything you want here. Check out neighbouring Souq Al Bahr too – lots of lovely souvenirs to be found, but you will be paying top $$$ here!

Of course, there are plenty of runners-up when it comes to modern shopping malls across the city: Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Festival City Mall, City Centre Mirdif, City Centre Deira, Ibn Battuta Mall… the list goes on!

Another spot well known for selling traditional (though often priced for the tourist market) pieces is the modern Souk Madinat Jumeirah, adjacent to the Jumeirah complex of hotels. Alternatively, Al Seef along Dubai Creek, made to look like a traditional souk though you’ll find an eclect range from antiques and spices to I Love Dubai t-shirts.

Bargain hunting in Dubai and traditional souks

If you seek bargains, though, you will want to head beyond the major malls. Karama Shopping Complex (Karama Market) and Karama Centre are some of the best places to shop cheaply in Dubai. Items are often much more affordable here than anywhere else, and it’s a good place to do some haggling!

But most visitors probably think of the souks of Deira when it comes to nabbing a shopping bargain in Dubai. Not only the world-renowned Gold Souk but there is also a Spice Souk, Textiles Souk and Perfume Souk. Nearby you will also find Naif Souk which is packed with bargains on electronics to home goods.

And another spot to consider is Dubai Global Village. Open evenings in the winter months, there is a plethora of bargains from merchants worldwide, but particularly a Middle East/Central Asia focus. Come towards the end of the season in April as they are closing up for the best prices!

Finally, real Middle East bargain hunters will want to be aware of Dragonmart and the Antique Muesem in Al Quoa. While the former might be known for cheap Chinese knock-offs, it can hold a treasure trove of bargain finds.

The Antique Museum is not actually a museum, but one of the biggest brick-a-brack type stores you can imagine in Dubai. it is well worth a taxi out there if you are determined to find some of the items on this list!

Arabic Perfume Oils

This is another way to bring the unique fragrances of Dubai home with you. Arabic perfume oils, also known as Arabic attars or ittar, are made from plant extracts. They are very popular among both men and women. There are literally dozens of different oils to choose from but don’t worry, the vendors will willingly help you pick the fragrance that’s right for you.

Hookahs (Shisha Pipes)

The distinct taste of Arabic Coffee referred to as “qahwa” is likely to be a lasting memory from a visit to Dubai and the UAE. It is, after all, one of the most common acts of hospitality to be served a small cup of coffee as a welcome drink by your hosts.

And what would your coffee be without a coffee pot? Arabica coffee pots, known as “dallah” locally can not only be visually beautiful souvenirs from your trip to Dubai, but also a practical item to use at home. They are distinctive for their long spouts and ornate handles. Be warned, many dallah found in souvenir shops are decorative only, the most functional type to look for is made of copper.

Finally, you might consider buying some gold jewellery while you’re in the City of Gold. Gold jewellery has a very obvious appeal, and it’s plentiful in Dubai. Because of this, it’s much more affordable than you might expect. It could be the perfect gift for the special person in your life or a great place to come and have something customized made just for you.

AKS Color Carnival 2024

When: Saturday, 2 March 2024, 11:00 am to 8:00 pm

Get set for Dubai’s biggest Holi celebration with entertainment from DJs Ace, Buddha, KV5, Yogmusic, Purab and Zubair. There will also be dhol players and carnival acts, along with food trucks, a Kid’s play area and a shisha area.

Holi Masti 2024

When: Sunday 3 March 2024, 10:00 AM

Taking place at Al Sahara Desert Resort, this colourful event will take place in a new location this year in early March, with performances by singers Manj Muzik, Nindy Kaur, Kanika Kapoor, Sukriti Kakkar and Prakriti Kakkar.

It also features Threoory the Band (famous for Ranbir Kapoor’s entry medley in the film Animal) and many DJs to keep you dancing. You can also expect to find a VIP Arena, kids arena, live music, live DJs, licensed beverages, food stalls, and organic colors will be used.

Tickets start from singles at AED 80, groups of 4, AED 280, or groups of ten can be purchased for AED 500. At the door, you’ll pay AED 100 per person.

Atrangi Holi Fest 2024

When: Sunday, 3 March 2024, 12 noon to 10:00 PM

Taking place at The Square (Rugby Park), Their claim is not the biggest but the most gigantic colourful celebration! Expect 10 hours of music, food and entertainment with water wars and dedicated kids play area.

Holi Music Mantra 2024

When: Thursday 11 April 2024, 10:00 am to 7:00 pm

A post-Ramadan event to look forward to, this event will take place in the Zabeel Park Amphitheatre.

There will be live DJ’s alongside live performances by three sensational Indian Idol faces, accompanied by organic color blasts, live dhol and plenty of Bollywood beats.

There will be plenty of Desi food stalls, as well as color and culture, for a complete family day out. Enjoy this late celebration of Holi in Dubai if you missed the early March events.
