There isn’t anything quite like watching trained race camels mounted with robotic jockeys race at speeds of around 65km an hour along the desert tracks.

What is Camel Racing?

Camel racing goes back many centuries when Middle-Eastern people of the local population would get together during festivals and events such as weddings to take part in this folk sport. Similar to horse racing, camels would compete against each other by running along a predetermined track.

On the day of the camel race, anywhere between 15-60 camels can be competing with each other for trophies and prize money. Camels adorned in bright colours stand behind the gates at the start line and sprint as soon as the gates fling open.

There’s excitement in the air as you hear the crowds cheering for these camels sprinting with their necks bobbing into a fog of sand. Their trainers follow them closely in their SUVs, driving around the race track and giving instructions through robotic jockeys sitting on top of the camels. Races typically last up to 15 minutes, which is then followed by the award ceremony.

Camel racing in Dubai draws in large crowds and promises to be an excellent tourist attraction. The races in the UAE even include traditional customs, rituals and folklore during the entire day of racing to evoke the region’s customs amongst visitors and tourists.

A Traditional UAE Sporting Event

The connection that Emiratis have with camels has been long-rooted. Not only were these animals used as modes of transport across the vast deserts, but they were also a reliable source of food and milk for the locals. They have been used for trading and, as mentioned before, taking part in sporting events.

The camel racing events that we see now in UAE preserve the rich Emirati cultural values and reflect the region’s traditions.

While the love for camel racing prevails, there are some things that have changed significantly over time. With the opportunity for the winning camels to walk away with cash prizes worth millions of dirhams, this internationally recognised sport has led to the rise of facilities for camel training, breeding, and research.

Nowadays, techniques such as special artificial insemination and embryo transfer techniques are used for crossbreeding select lineages and raising camels that are meant for the racing track. Careful attention is given to their training and nutrition in order to prepare racing camels for competition.

In the UAE, under the strict guidelines of the Emirates Camel Racing Federation, local governments encourage breeding programs and even provide subsidies to camel owners and breeders.

Safe Practices With Robotic Jockeys

In 2002, the UAE outlawed child jockeys riding camels and welcomed lightweight robotic jockeys instead. These robotic jockeys’ basic structure comprises a metal frame and a cordless power drill attached to a whip that encourages the camel to run faster without causing any harm.

These robots are decorated in the colours of the team and placed on moulded metal saddles that go on the camel during a race.

Advancement in technology has allowed some trainers to add on extra features to their jockeys without compromising on the weight that may slow down the camel. These features include a GPS to locate the camel’s location, a walkie-talkie allowing the trainer to speak to the camel and a heart rate monitor to keep track of the camel’s health.

When is Camel Racing Season in Dubai?

The Dubai camel racing season typically takes place during the cooler winter season, from October to March, at the different camel racing tracks across the country.

Races will likely occur early mornings, around 6:30 AM to 10:00 AM, usually on weekends. The Dubai races also run during the week for certain events.

What began as an informal sport quickly became an international racing event recognised across a global platform. The camel racing festivals held in UAE under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum – Dubai’s Crown Prince and the Chairman of Dubai Sports Council, bring together thousands of camel owners and race enthusiasts from across the UAE as well as the other Middle Eastern regions.

Where to Attend Camel Racing Dubai 2025-26

Camel races are free to attend; however, because they draw large crowds every year, it is advisable to book seats beforehand. Come in early on race day to take pictures with the camels, too.

In Dubai, the largest track is the Al Marmoon Camel Racing Track, situated near the Al Marmoum Heritage Village, which is a half-hour drive on the Al Ain road towards Oman.

Up-to-date information on Dubai camel races and upcoming events, especially at the Al Marmoon Camel race track, can be found on the Dubai Camel Racing Club website or by emailing them, info@dcrc.ae.

The Winter 2024-25 season has already commenced – if you are interested in times for the Dubai Crown Prince Camel Racing Festival, you can find these dates and times on their events page (3 to 22 March 2025).

If you’re trying to pick the best day, many agree that the weekend “Tribesman” days are the louder, more exciting days to attend, though any of the days will give you a unique and exciting experience.

Camels That Race in Dubai

All the camels you’ll find in the UAE are dromedary (single hump) camels.

If you see races classified as Haqaqa (Hukayif), Laqaiya (Laqaya), Izaah, Thnaya and Holoul, this refers to the camel racing category, defined by the camels’ age.

Other Camel Racing UAE

In addition to Al Marmoom, other camel racing tracks are present across the UAE, including:

• Al Wathba race track in Abu Dhabi for Abu Dhabi camel racing
• Al Sawan race track in Ras Al Khaimah
• Al Dhaid race track in Sharjah
• Al Tallah racecourse in Ajman
• Al Lebsa race track in Umm Al Quwain

You will also find camel racing as part of the annual Al Dhafra Festival, held in the Abu Dhabi Western Region each winter. This is the country’s largest heritage festival event, and its cornerstone event, the Camel Mazayna, draws huge international interest. The main festival grounds in Madinat Zayed are approximately 3 hours from Dubai.

If you’ve not been lucky enough to catch an actual UAE camel race, you may still get the opportunity around any of these tracks to go camel spotting and get some snaps of them training throughout the year, though for obvious reasons, the winter months are best.

Far more than just a shopping centre, this mega 1.2 million square metre retail complex has over 1,200 outlets and 200 dining spots, making it the biggest indoor venue in Dubai (excluding Dubai Airport, which is a staggering 18 million sq ft!!).

It is also the most visited building in the world! In 2023, the mall received a staggering 105 million visitors!

So, how do you keep kids entertained in this mega-mall? Very easily! We’re sharing here all our favourite family-friendly attractions both in and around Dubai Mall + where to dine, and parts not to miss with kids.

Top 10 Dubai Mall Kids Activities

Here’s our pick of the top 10 activities families will love to experience in Dubai Mall.

1. Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo

The Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo sits bang-smack in the middle of Dubai Mall and is truly unmissable. Whether you plan actually to go inside or not, it will be an utterly mesmerising experience for kids who love marine animals.

Famous for having the largest acrylic viewing panel on a suspended aquarium in the world, the giant screen measures 8.3m high by 32.88m wide and 75cm thick. From the Ground Floor through to Level 2, it can be easily viewed for free, giving a superb preview of the aquatic life inside.

Inside the aquarium, you can expect to experience hundreds of sharks and stingrays among the 140+ species on display. Within the zoo, there are plenty of add-on experiences to be enjoyed, from the glass-bottomed boat to caged shark walks, King Croc encounters, shark dives, ray encounter experiences, and feeding presentations.

Recommend for all age groups, but some hands-on activities have lower age limits, under 3’s go free.

2. KidZania Dubai Mall

In a similar model to KidZania branches that you’ll find worldwide, this is an incredible 7,000 m² real-to-life city built just for kids!

The KidZania Dubai edutainment centre at the Cinema end of the mall, Level 2, incorporates over 40 real-life activities for kids to enjoy, from role-playing to critical thinking to crafts and sports. Kids work to earn their own KidZoos (money!) that can then be spent on leisure activities within the city.

One of the best Dubai Mall activities for kids, we recommend it is the perfect place for children 4 to 11 years old – they need to be independent of a parent/carer to join in, so it’s not the best for toddlers).

Cost: Starts from 195 AED for an Economy ticket or Premium 260 AED. Accompanying parents are 80 AED and toddlers (2 to 3 years old) 110 AED; Under 3 Free.

3. Play DXB (formerly VR Park)

A dedicated virtual reality theme park—the largest of its type in the world—lets players enjoy dozens of virtual reality experiences, from motion rides such as the popular Dubai Drone, in which a simulated roller coaster flies you past Dubai’s landmarks, to popular video game classics.

Height restrictions and age recommendations apply per ride. There are some activities for little ones, but we’d recommend that they be at least 8 years old to enjoy them properly.

(NB this park used to be called SEGA Republic when the Mall first opened, then renamed to VR Park, and most recently to Play DXB; you may still find older Dubai guides referring to SEGA or VR Park – it’s all the same place in the mall!)

Cost: Entry just to walk around the park is free. You can enjoy the Soft Park Soft Play for 120 AED or buy Pay & Play Credits with bonuses from 200 AED.

4. Dubai Ice Skating Rink

Can you believe a full-sized Olympic ice skating rink is sitting at the very centre of Dubai Mall? A superb way to cool down in the desert, the ice rink is open to all ages and abilities, and you can learn to skate through to advanced skaters, showing off their moves to the crowd.

You can rent all your ice skating gear, and instructors are on hand, so even complete novices can try it!

Recommend over age 2 and no pregnant women.

Cost: varies by peak and non-peak times. Pricing starts from 110 AED.

6. Emirates A380 simulator

Fancy yourself piloting an Emirates A380 aircraft? A cutting-edge simulator can be found on the 2nd floor of the Dubai Mall where you can enjoy a 15, 30, or 60-minute instructed lesson on how to land this megalithic aeroplane at 12 of the world’s busiest airports. Recommended from 10 years+ (9 to 12-year-olds must be accompanied)

Cost: Varies by time peak/off-peak and if you have an Emirates Skywards card. Starting from 15 minutes off-peak AED 160. A full hour in peak time AED 650.

7. Admire the human waterfall

A totally free activity to enjoy with kids is to stand and admire the human waterfall in Dubai Mall. An utterly breathtaking indoor water sculpture, two large cylindrical walls 30 metres in diameter and 24-metres high span three floors of the Dubai Mall. It looks as though men are diving out of the water – utterly instagrammable!

(Also makes a good meeting point if kids get lost, everyone can point you to the giant fountain!)

9. The Burj Khalifa

The world’s tallest building is conveniently attached to the world’s largest shopping mall.

If you want to go all the way to “At The Top” Observation deck on level 124/125, we’d strongly suggest you pre-book your trip to Dubai Mall around this time slot.

Buying on the day costs exceptionally more, and tickets can sell out.

Do be warned, if you’re visiting at peak times such as over winter school holidays, even with a timed slot ticket, you should expect queuing through the Lower Ground Floor level of the Mall before you even get to the lift. (Bring your arsenal of kiddy queuing entertainment and anticipate you could be there for one hour+; strollers need to be checked).

Once you get to the top, you are obviously spoiled with spectacular city views as far as the eye can see over the thriving inner city and outward to the Arabian Gulf and the desert. It’s undoubtedly a kiddy winner, but do consider the cost when working out your Dubai budget.

Open to all ages, under 3’s are free.

Cost: Standard adult tickets start from 129 AED, and children (4 to 12 years) from 87 AED. Prices increase at peak times and if you add extra observation decks or experiences.

10. Dubai Fountain Show & Burj Khalifa Light Show

Please note that the Dubai Fountains were temporarily closed in May 2025 for extensive renovations; an official reopening date is yet to be announced

Watching the Dubai Fountains dancing show and seeing the Burj Khalifa light up at night is one of the best free activities with kids in Dubai. No matter how often we’ve seen this spectacular light and sound show, our kids are still mesmerised.

A big warning, though, if you are visiting with kids, especially on weekends (Friday to Sunday evenings), it can be exceptionally busy, to the point we wouldn’t recommend trying to get out to see it with small kids in strollers.

If you are smart and plan ahead though, you can beat the crowds. Don’t try to watch the show from the main mall entrance opposite Souk al Bahar (under the Apple store). This is the most congested and scarily crowded area with kids. You should aim to head outside about ten past and twenty to the hour, this gives you a good 20 minutes to find a comfortable position.

Another way to enjoy the fountains is to take an abra (traditional boat) ride on to Burj Lake and experience them up close or take a further walk around the lake to the 272m long Dubai Fountain Boardwalk (a small charge of 20AED), which lets you stand as close as you can among the fountains!

Alternatively—and this is our preferred option with children—time it with your dinner so you have seating and little mouths fed while enjoying several rounds of the fountain show. You can see our full guide to the best Dubai Fountain restaurants here.

There are also daytime shows that are much less crowded – though admittedly not AS spectacular as seeing the fountains at night – keep an eye out at 1:00 PM and 1:30 PM Monday to Thursday and 1:30 PM and 2:00 PM Fridays to Sundays.

Other Family Entertainment in Dubai Mall

Depending on your child’s age group, you may also want to check out:

• Dubai Dino – OK, it may not be AS impressive if you’ve been to the London Natural History Museum, but still, this is one heck of a large dino sitting smack in the world’s largest mall! The 244-metre, 155-million-year-old skeleton is a fun, free thing to see in the Souk area of the mall that little kids will love.
• Hysteria – definitely only for your teens+; this haunted house experience is seriously scary stuff
• Try the Mirror Maze for some dizzying fun
• Get dressed in traditional Emirati clothing and have a photo shoot with henna at the Tent Studio beneath the Dubai Waterfall
• Got a little one that wants to be truly glammed up? Take them to the Kido Caractere
• Catch the latest flicks at Reel Cinemas Megaplex – One of the world’s largest cinema complexes (naturally in the world’s largest mall!). There is every type of movie experience you can imagine here, from dine-in cinema to 4D, Screen X and the luxurious Platinum Suites.
• Let the little ones burn some energy in the Dubai Mall Soft play area, which is located adjacent to the food court on Level 2.

Family Entertainment Close to Dubai Mall

The Downtown area of Dubai is all wonderfully pedestrianized, so on a pleasant day (i.e. not at the peak of summer!) you can easily walk to nearby attractions in Downtown Dubai. Some to look out for with kids include:

• Souk Al Bahar is a traditional souk building adjacent to Dubai Mall, across a small bridge. It is mostly restaurants but also a few crafty shops (at tourist prices). It is fun to experience the traditional architecture and souk feel. If you don’t have time to get to Old Dubai on a city stop, this will give you a brief introduction.
• Burj Park by Emaar – not well advertised but a top spot to seek out in Dubai for a little patch of green amongst the highrises and a great photo spot looking back to Burj Khalifa. There are several bridges to the little island the park sits on. There is no play equipment but a spot where little ones can run about. There are adult-sized bikes for hire, but no helmets.
• Downtown Slide is another little-known and not well-advertised hidden gem in Zabeel Plaza. Head out the back side of Souk Al Bahar and beyond Palace Downtown, and you’ll find this 19-m-long tube slide. It’s busy in the evenings, but you can get it to yourselves during the day (if it’s not too hot)!

• Dubai Opera – one of the city’s premier entertainment venues is the stunning new opera house. A huge variety of shows are on throughout the year – from comedy to classic concerts and Christmas Pantos. Many of the shows at Dubai Opera are aimed at kids, particularly around Christmas and school holidays, so see if you can find a show that lines up with your Dubai visit dates.

Things Families Should Know Before Visiting the Dubai Mall With Kids

Remember, like all things Dubai, things are much quieter in the mornings than in the evenings. You will find this very true, especially on weekends; it gets much busier after Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah prayers on a Friday.

The evenings on weekends at Dubai Mall on weekends can be crazy busy. We do not recommend this as the best time to visit with kids. Have a plan of attack and what they should do if you become lost or separated. Dubai is very safe, but those few moments you can become separated from a child are terrifying.

You will definitely want the option of a stroller or pushchair (there are points where these can be hired if you did not bring one with you from Guest Services). We have easily clocked up days of 10,000+ steps in half a day just walking around Dubai Mall.

Glide Your Way Around the Ice Skating Rink

It’s hard to believe an entire Olympic-sized rink sits within the heart of the Dubai Mall. Open to all ages and abilities, you can learn to skate through to advanced skaters showing off their moves to the crowd. All your ice skating gear is there to rent.

Get the Kids Working at KidZania Dubai

One of the best Dubai Mall activities for kids, this real-to-life city is a 7,000 m2 edutainment centre, incorporating over 60 real-life activities for kids to enjoy, from role-playing to critical thinking to crafts and sports and fun ways to spend the KidZoos (money!) that they earn for working.

Ideal for your kids aged 4 to 12 years old (they need to be independent of a parent/carer to join in).

Land an Aircraft with the Emirates A380 Simulator

Have you ever wondered what it feels like to sit at the helm of the world’s largest commercial aircraft?

This cutting-edge simulator can be found on the 2nd floor of the Dubai Mall (opposite the Aquarium entrance). You can enjoy a 15, 30 or 60-minute lesson on landing this megalithic aeroplane at 12 of the world’s busiest airports.

In the space that was formerly known as VR Park (and before that, Sega Republic!), you will find the world’s largest virtual and augmented reality park—Play DXB. There’s something here for everyone, from an inflatable playpark for tots to grown-up-themed simulators and shooting games for teens and adults. Entry is free; you only pay for the games and activities inside, so grab a Pay & Play pass and take your pick.

Be Scared Senseless at Hysteria

Hysteria is a haunted house experience like no other – explore through a 15-room mansion simulator. Certainly not for the faint-hearted, this extreme fear experience is only for your thrill-seekers and adrenaline junkies; you’ll find it at the Cinema end of the Mall, Level 2/P7 – recommended for 16 years+.

Dubai Fountains (Free)

One of the best free activities in Dubai is sitting outside. At the foot of the Burj Khalifa, you will see the breathtaking Dubai Fountain show. Beautifully choreographed performances happen daily at 1:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m., and again in the evenings from 6:30 p.m. and every half hour until midnight.

We highly recommend grabbing a spot at a restaurant that has a view of the Dubai Fountains to maximise your experience and avoid the often crushing crowds on weekends.

For a truly special way to enjoy the fountain shows, take a traditional abra boat out onto Burj Lake to see the action up close (paid), or step out onto the Burj Lake boardwalk (paid) for the closest views.

The experience doesn’t end within the Dubai Mall. Keep heading outside the Mall (on the Lower Ground Floor, underneath the flagship Apple store). You will find a bridge over Burj Lake, which takes you to Dubai Souk al Bahar.

Catch a Show at Dubai Opera

The city’s premier cultural entertainment hub always has an extensive lineup of shows throughout the year, from opera and ballet to Westend and Broadway favourites. It is just a few minutes walk from the fashion end of Dubai Mall to Dubai Opera, making a perfect pairing for your evening entertainment.

Nestled on the western bank of Dubai Creek, Bur Dubai is the home to some of Dubai’s best value accommodation for all types of travellers.

Literally translating as “Mainland Dubai”, it is one of the oldest areas of the city and comes with fabulous transport connections – with Dubai International Airport only a stone’s throw away and Metro connections east to Deira and west to Downtown Dubai and Dubai Marina.

Bur Dubai hotels can be out-shone by their flashy high-rise neighbours in Downtown Dubai and the glitz and glamour associated with the resorts along Jumeirah Beach and Palm Jumeirah, but make no mistake, you can still nab a bargain on a luxury property in Bur Dubai.

Whilst some properties can be a little dated, there are many new boutique openings around the popular revitalised areas of town, the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood and Al Seef. You may compromise on luxury extras such as pools and spas on-site in some Bur Dubai hotels, but budget and short stopover travellers are likely unbothered by this.

Expect not only cheap and cheerful hotels but luxury resorts and hotel apartments ideal for families and longer stays.

A city best known for its glitzy high rises and shopping malls, expensive sports cars and gold-leaf tea, is it truly possible to visit Dubai on a budget?

It’s certainly no backpacker’s paradise when it comes to longer-term stays. However, if you are passing through Dubai on a shoestring budget, don’t dismiss Dubai as simply a transit stop.  Get out of DXB and come explore!

There are plenty of things to see and do for free in Dubai, as well as budget accommodation options and cheaper alternatives from transport to takeaway dinners that may still get you through the city of gold while watching those purse strings.

Getting Around Dubai On A Budget

Unlike many cities where the cheapest way of getting around town is on your own two feet, this option really isn’t all that practical in Dubai.

Whilst there are areas around town where you can walk extensively, such as around the Downtown Dubai/Dubai Mall, or around the Dubai Marina and JBR, getting from A to B to see the city’s sites is pretty difficult without some form of transport.

Not to mention for a large portion of the year, it’s simply too hot to walk far outside – please believe us!

Public transport systems in Dubai are quite efficient, and the Metro train driverless train system is by far the preferred method we would recommend to most travellers.

If you are only visiting Dubai on a very short stopover, a “Red Ticket” Nol card is what you will need. You can purchase this paper ticket from any Metro station at a cost of 2 AED + whatever your starting fare is. You have the flexibility with Nol Red to only pay the exact amount of the fare you will need and top up each time.

Planning on staying a few days and using the Metro often? Then you will benefit from purchasing a “Silver Card”. The Silver Nol ticket costs 25 AED ($6.80 USD) however includes 19 AED in an “e-purse” and you can keep reloading it. The fare you pay when you have a Nol Card with an e-purse is less than on a Red Ticket – we explain all the different types of Nol cards for tourists here.

Taxies are the most convenient way of getting around in Dubai, door to door and certainly, what we would still recommend if you are laden down with luggage. The minimum flagfall for taxis is now 12 AED (Under $4 USD) making it quite pricey for short trips around the city though.

Other ways you can save on your Dubai travel budget include taking a traditional dhow or Abra to cross Dubai Creek rather than paying for an expensive cruise and taking advantage of FREE airport transit buses if you are transferring between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Where To Stay In Dubai On A Budget

Dubai is a series of compromises when it comes to accommodation. As any good budget traveller will know, flexibility is key when it comes to grabbing a great accommodation deal.

• Closer to a shopping mall or beach in Dubai, you will pay more.
• Dubai’s older areas, closer to the airport and the border with Sharjah, are cheaper than Dubai and the flashier new area, such as JBR and the Palm Jumeirah.
• Try to book accommodation that is well-located to the nearest Metro stop. Especially in summer you really don’t want to walk further than 1km to anywhere.

Backpacker Hostels in Dubai

It may surprise you to know that there ARE backpackers hostels in Dubai, albeit they tend to be split into male and female dormitories only; they are best for solo budget travellers through Dubai. Why not take a look at:

• 1 World Backpackers – a home-away-from-home making it possible to sleep and WFH in one location, with stunning marina views. Your linen and towels are included here, with shared bathrooms, kitchen facilities and loads of communal entertainment options, and access to a pool and gym. Check price and availability here
• Lunar Hostel Plus – putting you in the heart of the action on The Walk in JBR, this pleasant budget accommodation option offers dorm rooms and shared kitchen facilities, a great cheap hostel option in JBR. Check price and availability here
• Bombay Backpackers – another great JBR hostel option with mixed and female-only dorms. There are great communal spaces to enjoy, with free wifi and linen, access to an outdoor pool and 24-hour reception. Check out pricing and availability here.

Just be warned that some hostels in Dubai are, in fact, converted apartments and most likely should NOT be operating as hostels.

Cheap Hotels in Dubai

For couples and families, we recommend you try cheap hotels instead of backpackers (most have a no under 18’s rule).

There are plentiful cheaper hotels in the older parts of town, such as Bur Dubai and Deira, still of an excellent standard relative to the star rating.

Some cheaper hotel rooms also come with the convenience of a small kitchenette to help you further manage costs.  We recommend you try:

A Warning On Dubai Hotel & Hostel Prices

Your Dubai budget can slowly whittle away if you don’t take note of one crucial thing – the +++.

The what?!  When you are quoted a hotel price, you will almost certainly be given the pricing BEFORE taxes and service charges.  And there are a few to be aware of!

• VAT 5%
• Municipality fee 7%
• Property service charge 10%
• “Tourism Dirham Fee” per room, per night 7 – 20 AED (varies depending on the grade of hotel, also called Hotel Tax or City Tax)

You can save on these added hotel costs in Dubai by either self-catering or dining out at restaurants that are not attached to a hotel.

Free and Really Cheap Things To Do In Dubai

Whilst on the surface, it may appear that everything in Dubai is glamorous and expensive – and a lot is – there are still plenty of activities to fill your days in Dubai on a budget.

Experience the Dubai Mall & Burj Khalifa

While it’s costly to head up the Burj Khalifa (and can involve extensive queueing at times), it’s totally free to see it from outside and enjoy the nightly light and sound fountain show that occurs on Burj Lake, Downtown Dubai, outside Dubai Mall.

• Timings for the sound and light show are currently 1:00 pm & 1.30 pm, then every 30 minutes between 6:00 pm and midnight.

There are many great restaurants where you can grab a bite in the Dubai Mall and adjacent Souk al Bahar with brilliant views. However, on a budget, we recommend you grab some takeaway from the food court inside the Lower Ground floor of Dubai Mall and set up your own little picnic to enjoy the show.

You can also enjoy an outside view of the spectacular suspended aquarium tank of Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo from within the Dubai Mall, completely free. It costs to go through the underwater tunnel and enjoy up-close encounters, but this is one of the best free aquarium shows you’ll get anywhere in the world!

Catch Some Rays at the Beach

Hiring deck chairs or taking camel rides at the beach WILL cost, but most of Dubai’s brilliant beach fronts are completely free to enter.

The most popular is Jumeirah Public Beach (also known as Sunset Beach or Umm Suqeim Beach), famous for its views of the Burj Al Arab, or why not try The Beach in JBR, or the fairly newly open La Mer in Jumeirah 1.

Bathroom and change facilities are free, but of course, there are plenty of cafes and vendors along these stretches of beach vying for your attention. Come prepared with towels from your hotel and a picnic lunch or dinner to avoid the temptation to spend more.

There are a few beach parks, such as Mamzar where you pay a 5 AED per person municipality fee for the upkeep of facilities, but they come with great park space too for barbequing and picnics.

Explore Old Dubai

Enjoy the historical al Fahidi neighbourhood, the Dubai Museum (currently closed for renovations), and take an abra ride (1 AED) over Dubai Creek to Deira “Old Dubai” to see the spice souk and the gold souk, or shop for a bargain in Naif market – plenty of ideas on little trinkets and souvenirs you can pick up in Dubai here.

The newly opened Al Seef area seamlessly blends between old and new Dubai to extend your creek-side stroll and further souks to explore. Dining along here is not cheap, but there are plenty of shops to stick your head into and browse for free.

Stroll the Palm Jumeirah Boardwalk

In the cooler months, explore one of the city’s newer outdoor spaces.

Take a taxi (avoiding the obscenely expensive Monorail) out to the end of Palm Jumeirah, marvel at the amazing Atlantis the Palm (you can sneak a peek at the start of the giant aquarium, The Lost Chambers, for free), then set out to explore the new boardwalk that curves around 11kms of the outer crescent of the Palm.

Do You Need A Dubai Tourist SIM? Wifi is widely available, but grabbing your free Du tourist SIM card is a must on short stopovers, or check out all the available Dubai tourist SIM cards to save you on expensivee roaming charges while staying connected.

How To Eat In Dubai On A Budget

There are huge discrepancies in what you will pay for food in Dubai. Forget high-end dining but do watch where you’re eating – this alone will put a premium on your food. Restaurants attached to hotels, as we mentioned above, will draw premium taxes.

In a city full of insta-perfect cafes, it’s easy to forget there are plenty of budget buys and a huge range of international cuisines to choose from.

Try eating at shopping mall food courts. There will be the usual array of internationally known fast-food outlets, but also a great range in cuisines from smaller sellers from Lebanese to Indian and everything in between, influenced by the vast expatriate population of Dubai.

Self-catering will always be the best option to save cash. You can find plenty of small convenience stores in neighbourhoods across the city, as well as larger supermarkets that offer an extensive range of pre-made meal options in takeaway containers.

If you add alcohol to the mix, frankly, DO expect to pay through the nose for the privilege. Whilst alcohol is available to tourists and expats, it’s heavily taxed. When to Visit Dubai

Timing your trip to Dubai right can also help your budget stretch a little further.

You will find the cooler winter months of the year, broadly November through to April, are the most popular, which also means the busiest and most expensive, with loads of international events in the calendar, driving prices up.

Christmas to New Year especially hotel prices rise, and around popular events and school holidays. 

The summer months are much hotter – June to September sees consistent daytime highs over 40°C (104°F). Summer says many expats ship out to their home countries to escape the heat. However, these off-peak months also have low occupancy, so it can be a great time to bag a bargain.

Watch the Dubai Fountains show

A great starting point for many visitors to Dubai is to head to Downtown Dubai and the Dubai Mall. Every lunchtime and throughout the evening, visitors are treated to the visual spectacle of the Dubai Fountain Show.

Perfect choreographed dancing fountains move to music, ranging from modern pop hits to traditional Arabian music, under the foot of the Burj Khalifa (which also runs its own towering LED light show throughout the evening).

Enjoy the IMAGINE sound and light show

A nightly show at Dubai Festival City, this sensory experience harnesses the power of light, water and fire in one incredible display, using the world’s largest water projection screen.

Dubai Festival City is a great location for those who want to stay close to Dubai airport and the free shows held hourly between 7:00 pm and 11:00 pm are a fabulous family entertainment option (and in our experience a bit less crowded than the Dubai Fountains).

See the largest fountain show in the world

Just when you thought that was it, along comes another even bigger and better than the last! The Palm Fountain which opened in October 2020 set the Guinness World Record as the largest fountain show in the world. Offering nightly shows every 30 minutes between 7:00 pm and midnight, your best vantage point is from The Pointe entertainment district at the top of the trunk of Palm Jumeirah.

Spot flamingos in the wetlands

Head to the Ras Al Khor wildlife sanctuary on the outskirts of the city to spot over 170 native species that call the protected wetlands area home – the stunning pink flamingos are a crowd favourite. The wetlands are a beautiful free urban oasis with airconditioned viewing platforms and a Lagoon Hide for quiet observation of its residents.

Turtle feeding at Jumeirah Al Naseem

The Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Project, based inside Jumeirah Al Naseem Hotel (adjacent to Souk Madinat Jumeirah) is a fabulous opportunity to see some of the country’s native turtle species. During the cooler months of the year, a FREE weekly turtle feeding session is held at 11:00 am on a Wednesday. [NB we’re waiting to see if this one returns post-COVID]

The session is only short with priority given to children (and very busy on local school holidays), or you can turn up at any time and try and spot these magnificent creatures floating in the lagoon.

The Walk & The Beach

One of Dubai’s most iconic beachfront and leisure precincts can be found in the JBR area of the city. There are plenty of tourist traps beckoning for your cash along the way, but if you are happy to hold firmly onto your wallet, it costs you nothing to stroll along and enjoy the atmosphere especially beautiful at sunset. The street art installations are popular and in the winter months enjoy The Market.

Soak up the sun at Kite Beach

Although there are plenty of beaches along the Arabain Gulf coast, Kite Beach is one of our favourites for enjoying the rays as the locals do. There are plenty of water sports at Kite Beach, but there’s no entry fee for simply pulling up for a towel and enjoying the sun.

Picnic at Dubai Creek Park

One of the largest parks in Dubai, there’s always a plethora of family activities going on in this green oasis that hugs the western bank of Dubai Creek. Entry is 5 AED per person to access the extensive grounds, botanical gardens, playgrounds and barbeque and picnicking areas. For an extra charge, there is a Dolphanairum, a planetarium in Children’s City and even a cable car for some unique and stunning city views.

Fresh seafood at Jumeirah Fishing Harbour

A little surprise packet tucked away in the more suburban area of Dubai, the Jumeirah Fishing Harbour is a modern dining area giving a traditional touch to the waterfront. The area, close to Mercato Mall has fully revitalised a few years ago. Most come for the fresh seafood and dining options, or simply enjoy the jetty. Coming at dawn is your best time to see the harbour in action.

Enjoy the sunset from the Palm Boardwalk

Covering the outer crescent of the Palm Jumeirah, enjoy a stunning sunset walk around Dubai’s most exclusive resort zone. There are food trucks and benches along the wooden boardwalk for regular stops – though only the fit may be able to cover the whole 11km!

The boardwalk starts from the Rixos Palm Jumeirah Hotel on the Crescent’s east side to the One&Only The Palm on the west side of the crescent – one of the best free things to do on Palm Jumeirah! 

Soak in the beach vibes at La Mer

This fun and funky beachfront area truly is one of the new hot spots in Dubai. Brilliant boardwalk views back to the city skyline, fun and colourful food vans and beach huts give an utterly instagrammable backdrop.

As well as the beach itself, there are loads of free play spaces here for kids and (paid) extras including Hawa Hawa outdoor trampoline park, Roxy Cinemas and Laguna Waterpark. A great place to chill of an evening, even in the hotter months.

Discover Dubai Museum

The culturally curious will be pleased to know there is an extensive line up of museums to explore in Dubai. Most visitors have likely only heard of the Dubai Museum and Al Faihidi Fort, which only cost 3 AED to enter. Don’t let your exploring finish there, however. There are more than a dozen museums to explore around Dubai, many of them situated in the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood (mostly free or just a few dirhams for entry). Dubai Museum is currently closed for renovations.

Get lost in the streets of Al Fahidi and Al Seef

This brings us nicely to our next suggestion. After completing a tour of the Dubai Museum, the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood beckons you to come and explore. Many of the city’s original buildings have been wonderfully restored and the narrow alleyways now house galleries to tea houses as well as small museums and the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU), a key cultural bridge to understanding more about the city, Islamic culture and the people of Dubai.

Many of the events organized by SMCCU used to be free (including cultural meals and mosque tours) but there is now a cover charge for most activities. Do enquire within what is currently on their program, and if you are going to splash the cash for a Dubai experience, this is the one that will deliver the most educational value.

Nearby, the Al Faididi Historical Neighbourhood now seamlessly blends to the modern development of Al Seef, built in the traditional style of “barajeel” wind tower houses. There are plenty of restaurants and tourist traps along the way, but also wonderful shops and instalments to browse as you make your way to Dubai Creek.

Take an Abra Ride across Dubai Creek

An absolute steal at 1 AED for a traditional boat! This is one of the best authentic Dubai experiences as you sail from one side of Dubai Creek to the other. There are pricier options, as well as Dubai Creek Dhow Cruises and dining options, but nothing can beat the wind in your hair on a traditional abra!

Satisfy your senses at the Old Souks

This is a taster of true Dubai, a trading port for well over a century as you make your way through the streets and laneways of Deira on the eastern bank of Dubai Creek. The Gold and Spice Souk are the most famous, but you can also seek out the perfume souk and electronics souk.

Stroll for a bargain in Meena Bazaar

Often touted as Little India, this is a bargain hunter paradise if you are on the hunt for traditional textiles, jewellery and handicrafts. Situated in the city’s Bur Dubai area, this market area is a colourful collection of shops and laneways, along with cheap South Asian eats.

The area is affectionately nicknamed Meena Bazaar after its counterpart in India and the name has pretty much stuck since the 1970s.  The shopping district is located between Al Fahidi, Al Musalla and Al Ghubaiba streets.

Coffee Museum

Amongst Dubai’s additional museums this is one of our favourites, found at villa 44 Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. As well as learning more about the origins of coffee production and how coffee is produced around the world, you can sample traditional Emirati coffee too!

If you’ve got some hard-earned dirhams to spare (10 AED), this is where you can sit down for some authentic coffee in the upstairs cafe (includes a kids corner) and also pick up speciality coffees from around the world.

Al Shindagha Heritage Village

Situated on the banks of Dubai Creek, near Port Rashid is the Al Shindagha Historical District. The area consists of many buildings, including a Heritage Village and several museums. This is a great one to explore if you are interested in the birth of Dubai and the role of Dubai Creek.

Look out for the Diving Museum, Camel Museum, Perfume Museum and Sheikh Saeed al Maktoum House, telling an interesting story of the country’s past.

NB the Museum now has a cover charge of 15 AED for adults, 5 AED students/kids

Dubai Canal Boardwalk

The man-made canal carved into the desert sees Dubai Creek connected to the Arabian Gulf via the city’s Business Bay area. Whilst you can pay to take a ferry or cruise boat down the canal, there is a 3.2km walkway that runs alongside the canal that’s free to stroll along, particularly pretty at night. At Sheikh Zayed Road you can catch the man-made Dubai Waterfall, beautifully lit up at night.

Enjoy a ride on the Dubai Water Bus

Whilst marina cruises in Dubai can be on the pricey side, if you’d still like to enjoy the water, then pop on down to Dubai Marina and catch a leg of the Dubai Water Bus. A single journey for an adult is 3 AED and children are free.

Cool off in the Dubai Marina Walk Fountains

One especially for the little kids (but we won’t judge if the grown-ups want to join!). The beautiful sidewalk fountains can be a savour from the heat and the perfect way to cool off as you make your way around the bustling, modern Dubai Marina area of the city.

Wander City Walk area

In contrast to the older areas of Dubai, the City Walk area of Dubai is a modern entertainment area of the city. There are plenty of paid activities on hand including the Green Planet, Geek Nation and Mattel Play! Town but it’s completely free to stroll around the modern, design-inspired streets and enjoy free street entertainment, particularly in the cooler winter months.

A photo stop at Burj al Arab

OK, you can pretty much put aside your next paycheck if you actually want to go inside the iconic “7-star” hotel, but there are plenty of ways you can catch a glimpse of the iconic sail-shaped landmark. For a close-up view, head to Sunset Beach – which as the name would suggest is perfect for those sunset views.

Alternatively, head to Souk Madinat Jumeirah, from where you can capture beautiful canal views with a Burj al Arab backdrop (the abra boats here run by Jumeirah Hotel are substantially more expensive though than Dubai Creek!)

Fill your senses at the Ripe Market

Enjoy the best of local produce and crafts at Dubai’s favourite pop up market event. A seasonal event it moves destination each year (though seems to have found its permanent home during the 2019-2020 winter season at Academy Park). The Academy Park event is held on every Friday during the winter, and in Umm Sequim on a Saturday.

The market is also held indoors at Times Square Centre every Saturday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Explore the world at Global Village

Take a trip around the world at this international showcase event. Held daily over the cooler winter months, Global Village Dubai is like a giant fair of food, entertainment and traditions from over 70 countries.

Entry is only 15 AED and you only pay for any additional activities or food once inside. Food tasters to free dance performances and showground rides, it is truly a global taster session and one of Dubai’s most buzzing evening destinations.

Get into Aquaventure Free

Yes, you read that right! It’s not well-advertised but by registering here, you can get into top rates Dubai water park Aquaventure at Atlantis the Palm for free on your birthday and in the immediate days before and afterwards (redeemable once per year). Other members of your party will need to pay (you’ll get a 20% discount for 2 friends), but a great saving if you have a celebrant in the family!

Enjoy art, fashion & fun at Alserkal Avenue

A modern fun and funky area of Dubai, Alserkal Avenue in Al Quoz is a treasure trove of art galleries, performing arts spaces and artisans working in one creative hub. Food, fashion and fun can be found amongst the warehouses with regular free exhibitions and cultural events happening throughout the year. Some shows and hands-on experiences cost extra.

Admire Al Qudra & the Love Lakes

The iconic “Love Lakes” are a man-made creation, an extension to Al Qudra Lakes in the desert area of Al Marmoon Desert Conservation Reserve, about 45 minutes outside of Dubai. Entry to the Love Lakes area is free, as is access to the Al Qudra bike track (extra to hire a bike from TrekBikes.ae to use on the track). There’s no public transport this far out of town though so you will need to have your own car.

Get on your wheels at Nad al Sheba Park

A popular spot for local fitness enthusiasts, the Nad Al Sheba Cycle Park has 4km, 6km and 8km bike paths to suit everyone from beginners to pros as well as a jogging track. Entry is free but if you’re only visiting you’ll need a rental bike at 50 AED.

Camping in the Dubai desert

If a desert safari in Dubai isn’t really your style, there are plenty of places in the Dubai desert where you can pull up your own patch of sand for the night totally free. Granted, you need to be travelling with the right sort of gear and have access to a 4×4, but this is one of the best free activities residents in Dubai can enjoy over the cooler winter months.

Day trip to Hatta

A day trip into the mountains to experience Hatta is not only a hugely rewarding contrast to the city (and often several degrees cooler than being on the coast), you can enjoy many of the sites for free.

The outdoor Hatta Heritage Village is completely free to enter, as is the Hatta Wadi Park and hiking the mountain trails.

Free movie under the stars

Dubai’s original outdoor cinema can be found on the rooftop of the Wafi Pyramids Complex every Sunday evening from 8.30 PM. There are giant bean bags to lounge around on for free to the public and popcorn & hotdogs available to purchase – seasonal.

View the world’s largest suspended aquarium tank

Inside Dubai Mall, you will find the megalithic 10 million litre Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo tank.  The viewing area in the centre of Dubai Mall stands at an impressive 51m wide and 20m high and is completely free to view from the outside.

There are plenty of add on experiences inside the aquarium if you want to upgrade for the full experience.

Get your photograph with the Burj Khalifa

OK, we won’t lie, going up the world’s tallest tower Burj Khalifa is not cheap. But getting your selfie with the Burj is the next best thing right? It’s not easy to fit the whole tower in, but our favourite recommended spot is to head to Burj Park, on the other side of Burj Lake to the Dubai Mall.

Pre-fitted with pretty wings for those insta-moments, here’s your best chance to get the Burj Khalifa in the frame and admire this record-breaking building. (Note they don’t take too fondly to what they consider professional photography, save this experience for your smartphone).

You can also catch a glimpse on your way past of the stunning Dubai Opera House, and head all the way around Burj Lake for Burj Plaza, here you can find the free Downtown Slide! A giant 19m high attraction that older kids and adults will love!

Attended a horse race at Meydan Racecourse

Catch the excitement of racing season from October through to March each year with the Dubai Racing Club.  General Admission is free throughout most of the season (bar the  Dubai World Cup Finale end of March). A great fun way to enjoy the more glamorous side of Dubai without cost.

Watch a camel race

For one of the ultimate cultural experiences in Dubai, you cannot go past attending a camel race at Al Marmoom Camel Race Track. Free to enter and you may even capture a moment where the trainers are happy for you to get up close and personal with the camels. Tracking down the actual camel race timetable has always been notoriously hard but expect most of the action to happen early morning and be all over by 9:00 am.

There’s no denying that Dubai CAN be an expensive city to visit if you choose to enjoy all of the attractions and luxuries on offer. There can be plenty of hidden costs in Dubai too, so do watch out for tourist taxes, particularly if you are dining in a hotel. Street eats are a fabulous way to save money and exploring beyond the main tourist areas.

With some careful planning, there’s plenty that can be enjoyed in Dubai on a budget – and as you’ve seen many incredible attractions are completely free.

Here’s what you need to know when planning a trip to JBR and its counterparts; The Beach & The Walk.

What to Expect at JBR – Jumeirah Beach Residences

Located in the busy district of Dubai Marina, JBR is a beachfront community of hotel and residential apartment towers within walking distance of some of Dubai’s famous attractions.

Stretching across 1.7 km, you can easily spot the cluster of modern-looking sandy-hued buildings making up JBR – Dubai’s Golden Mile. The residents call it their favourite spot because of how self-contained it is for young couples and families, while the tourists keep returning back for easy access to world-class restaurants, sandy beaches, and vibrant nightlife.

Like many neighbourhoods in Dubai, JBR too comes with its own resident malls. Overlooking the Arabian Gulf (Persian Gulf), JBR The Beach is an open outdoor ‘mall’, and home to a cinema, well-known shopping brands, and restaurants – as well as the name might suggest a stunning beach. On the other hand, The Walk at JBR is a stretch of luxury boutiques, stores, and alfresco dining options along the entire length of JBR.

What’s there to do at JBR The Beach?

One of the coolest beach malls in Dubai, JBR The Beach promises to have it all: sun, sand, and sea sports.

The ultimate hangout place for the entire family, this beach-front mall offers cabanas to lay in, gastronomic adventures, and the chance to catch your favourite blockbuster movie. Here are our 5 favourite things to do at The Beach:

1. Relax at the beach!

Looking for the perfect way to unwind after a busy week, then head to the sandy beaches of JBR The Beach overlooking the iconic Ain Dubai. There’s plenty to do at this open beach, whether you are thinking of relaxing with a book and working on your tan, or partaking in some extreme water sports.

The Sea Breeze offers you the option to book a cabana or sun loungers, complete with towels and umbrellas. You can even grab your buddy and go on thrilling water rides such as the Banana Boat ride and Donut ride. There’s also jet skiing, parasailing, and more for the thrill-seekers.

Get the family together and try to stay dry on AquaFun, an inflatable floating obstacle course set up in the middle of the sea in the shape of I Love Dubai.

The little ones can also have some fun in the sun with dedicated splash parks and park areas for them, there’s the Splash Pad children’s playground as well as the newly opened Splash n Party.

2. Dine out in JBR

No matter what you are craving, JBR Beach caters to everyone’s appetite – in fact there are over 40 dining outlets just at The Beach! The eccentric range of menus means you will be tasting food from around the globe while enjoying stunning views of the beach, Bluewaters Island and Ain Dubai.

There’s Eggspectations for all-day breakfast options, flavoursome Indian at Bombay Bungalow, hearty Turkish for the meat lovers at Bosphorus, and even seafood classics at Aprons and Hammers. Even those with a sweet tooth will be spoilt for choice when choosing between waffles at Morelli’s Gelatos or the sweet buns at Papa Roti.

A unique experience to look out for is Flying Cup – sky-high drinks and dining at 40m in the air!

There are some licensed fine dining restaurants serving alcohol, as well as Bla Bla – a huge new Ibiza-style beach club boasting 20 bars and a restaurant serving Japanese, Italian, and Texas Smokehouse cuisines.

Whether it’s vegan smoothies or cafes with latte art, JBR Beach is a foodie’s delight, from morning till past midnight.

There’s a Sephora for the sunscreen you may have forgotten, Dive N’ Surf for trendy beachwear, River Island for the stylish accessories, and many other shops. 

From luxury retail to your everyday home needs, there’s even mini grocery stores to stock up on the essentials. If you’re a tourist and haven’t had the chance to buy yourself or your loved one a little memory of this city, there’s even a souvenir shop, meaning you simply have no excuse to leave The Beach.

4. Watch a movie

Feel like escaping the heat for a bit? Head over to Roxy Cinemas JBR, and choose between the latest Hollywood, Bollywood, and Arabic movies. The cinema is located next to Adventure HQ, and operates from 11:00 am to 1:00 am – this is the perfect midday retreat, or unwind after a long day in the sun.

5. Work out with a view:

As far as training goes, it won’t get much better than working out against a beautiful backdrop of the beach and Bluewaters Island, followed by a refreshing swim. The Warehouse Gym located at The Beach in JBR comes with an outdoor setup consisting of a CrossFit rig, rope climbs, kettlebells, rowing machines, and jump boxes.

Make the most of the lovely Dubai winters and get your ‘fitspiration’ by training at this outdoor gym. You can book a one-off gym session with the on-site staff to assist you, or join one of the group classes, which include commando circuit classes, spinning and CrossFit. One-time classes start at AED 105.

What’s There To Do At The Walk At JBR

A vibrant promenade lined with swaying palms on either side, buzzing with residents and tourists, The Walk at JBR is a popular destination for shopping, dining, and strolling. You will find here different homegrown boutiques and handicraft shops. Watch the place transform after sunset, and feel mesmerized by the jaw-dropping performances carried out by the street entertainers.

Here are four things you shouldn’t miss when exploring The Walk in Dubai:

1. Check out the funky street art

Grab your camera and go on a discovery trail for some seriously cool 3D Street art. See if you can spot a giraffe, a giant eagle, two rag dolls named Annie and Aisha, and a colourful explosion of galloping horses. These 3D optical illusions have been created by talented international and national artists, and will surely make you go ‘wow’.

2. Cycle along The Walk

While it’s fun to explore The Walk on foot, if you are restricted with time, you can choose to rent a bicycle. With automated bike hire stations dotted along the stretch, you choose to park and return your bike at any designated slots.

3. Dining Al Fresco

Similar to JBR The Beach, you will be spoilt for choices when it comes to dining options from around the globe. With the tables and chairs littering the pavements, you can enjoy Dubai’s beautiful weather by dining outside while overlooking the stunning sea. From noodle shops to charming cafes and healthy dining eateries, this place is lovely and reminiscent of the European al fresco dining scene.

4. Activities to keep you occupied

The Walk at JBR is always bustling with national and international skilled artists, entertaining you with their shows and talents. The events can change depending on the festival and season, but to give you an idea of some of the things you can expect are street performances, sand sculptures, and photography displays.

How to Get to JBR

JBR is easily accessible by car. If travelling from Dubai, take the Sheikh Zayed Road (E11) to Jebel Ali. Then take Garn Al Sabka Street (D59W) and continue to King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street (D94) until you find signs to JBR.

If travelling from Abu Dhabi, take the Ghweifat Highway (E11) towards Dubai. Then take Exit 29 to King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street (D94). Continue on until you see signs to JBR.

Parking for the public is limited along the JBR walk. However, there are hourly paid green parking zones and also some parking spots along JBR The Walk. If visiting JBR The Beach, you can avail yourself of three hours of free parking at the underground mall parking when you spend AED 100 or more at any participating outlet, Roxy Cinemas and/or Sea Breeze.

Valet parking service is also available for AED 55 (standard) and AED 110 (VIP) per day per vehicle.

If you are using the Dubai Metro, take the Red Line and step off at station 23, Dubai Marina Metro Station. From here you can cross over to the Dubai Tram and board the tram heading to Jumeirah Lakes Towers. You can get off the Dubai Tram at either Station 1 (Jumeirah Beach Residence 1) or Station 2 (Jumeirah Beach Residence 2).

If you are looking to take the RTA public bus, numbers 8 and 84 will take you directly to JBR.

Taxies in the area are plentiful, with several taxi zones along The Walk and in the Dubai Marina area.

Where to Stay in JBR

There is a fabulous array of accommodation options in and around JBR. Most offer apartment-style accommodation making it very popular with families looking for resort-style facilities but cooking amenities and separate bedrooms.

Not all hotels and resorts are technically part of JBR but to a visitor, they will all come across as the same area.

Best Resort on the Beach – Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort & Spa

OK, we’re technically cheating here, there are a few stunning, sprawling beach resorts that sit at the eastern end of JBR. Le Royal Meridien is one of these, sitting at the very start of The Walk, so we’re counting it!

With stunning landscaped gardens, a beachfront boardwalk, rooms boasting either Gulf or Marina views, a fitness centre and spa, three swimming pools, a kids club – even a crazy golf course! This is one of Dubai’s best beachfront offerings in an ultra-convenient location near Dubai’s top tourist attractions. If budget permits, book it (or next door Ritz-Carlton, you can’t go wrong)!

Best Hotel Apartment – Doubletree by Hilton

The upscale hotel is a suites-only property sitting at the opposite end of The Walk, closer to Bluewaters. Each suite at Doubletree features private balconies, marina or sea views, and a separate living room. Depending on suite size (1 to 3 bedrooms), some include a full kitchen and laundry facilities too.

Guests can enjoy a range of dining options, coffee, and poolside happy hours as well as private beach access with cabanas. The ocean-front infinity pool, Wellness Spa, and fitness centre are also drawcards for families and business visitors alike.

Best for singles & Couples – Rixos Premium Dubai

If you want to hang out in the life of the party, Rixos on the beachside of The Walk is your go-to.

The property hosts 11 bars and restaurants as well as Azure Beach, one of the trendiest beach clubs in Dubai, known for its glamorous pool parties. There are two family pools and a semi-Olympic-sized pool for adults, along with a great range of retail and dining opportunities.

Best for budget family travellers along JBR – Roda Amwaj Suites

There are many hotels and residences that sit inside JBR proper – that is, the big strip of sandy-coloured buildings opposite The Beach.

Roda Amwaj Suites consistently comes out as one of the cheapest every time we search. The rooms are basically on par anywhere you stay along JBR – the whole complex was built at the same time, so why is there such a differential in pricing? It can only be the brand name attached and extra services you may not need.

If you want a spacious longer-term stay with no thrills, just big, clean rooms and the convenience of being in the centre of The Walk, you’ll have no problems with Roda Amwaj Suites.

Best Budget Stay – Bombay Backpackers DXB

A hostel in Dubai? Yes! It’s not that common to find, but there are some good, reputable backpacker hostels to find in Dubai. Granted, it may not be as cheap as other parts of Asia, but from around AED 80 a night ($22 USD), this is as budget as you’ll get.

Bombay Backpackers DXB has a great reputation as it’s situated within JBR itself on the 18th floor, offering waterfront views in the heart of the action. Mixed dorms and single-sex dorms of 6 to 12 are offered with clean linens, a common room and a games room. No breakfast is included, but access to a fridge, kitchen facilities, washing machine, and swimming pools is in JBR.

Souk, or also spelled as souq, is an Arabic word which means ‘Market’. Traditionally seen in Arab countries, these noisy open-air outdoor markets are very different to other street markets you may have seen elsewhere.

Typically, the stall vendors line up on either side of narrow streets, in their square shops, clustered together depending on the type of goods being sold. At these endless maze of alleys, you will find yourself walking past vendors selling treasures such as fragrant teas and exotic spices from the over filled baskets, while other vendors enticing you to have a look at their fine silks and exotic tapestries.

The history of Dubai’s trading culture

Being a port city, Dubai has been part of the trading route for goods travelling between Africa and India for many centuries. Goods arriving varied from exotic spices, to hand-woven fabrics and organic produce, and made their way to the souks of Dubai.

One of the oldest souks in Dubai, is Deira’s souk originally established around 1850, one which continues to be popular even today due to its close proximity to the harbour on creek.

Dubai’s modern shopping culture

Dubai is a shopping haven for all, no matter your budget. If you look carefully, behind the many ultra-modern malls with international fashion brands and light studded sky scrapers, you will find traditional souks, dotted among bustling neighbourhoods, selling almost everything from precious stones to fragrant perfumes. It’s where you will get a range of items at affordable prices and cheap bargains, which can be lowered even more depending on your haggling skills.

The different traditional souks in Dubai

The souks in Dubai continue to be an important place for daily life and trade for many people. The city has many souks across the different neighbourhoods, some a few hundred years old, while others brand new with the aesthetics of a traditional souk. Here are the top traditional souks you must visit when in Dubai:

Deira Gold Souk

Dubai’s Deira Gold Souk is a shopper’s paradise when it comes to buying gold, other precious metals and gem stones. Home to over 300 gold shops, Deira Gold Souk has been a business hub for jewellers for decades, and showcases jewellery in a wide variety of designs and at unbeatable prices.

Deira Gold Souk boasts many gold outlets, and even some popular names such as Damas, Joyalukkas and Malabar Gold. The exquisite craftsmanship of jewellers and the stunning pieces of jewellery on display will leave you mesmerised, ensuring you will find something that suits your style and budget.

And just in case you are worried about whether the gold sold here is genuine, the Government of UAE regulates all products sold at the stores in the Gold Souk in Deira, guaranteeing authenticity and purity of gold. 

Location: Al Ras, Deira, next to Dubai Fish and Vegetable Market.

Timings: From 10:00 am to 10:00 pm. On Fridays the souk opens at 4:00 pm.

How to get there:

By Car: It is important to note that public parking can be difficult to find, specially during peak hours and weekends. Using public transport such as the Dubai Metro, RTA buses or taxi is recommended.

By Metro: Take the Green line to Al Ras Station, which is a 10 minute walk to Deira Gold Souk. Another nearby metro station is the Baniyas Square Station.

By Bus: Buses C07, C09 and C28 stop in the nearby area.

Dubai Textile Souk

The Dubai Textile Souk, sits on the banks of Bur Dubai, across the Dubai Creek.  It’s a place that will leave you dazzled with colourful textiles and beautiful prints everywhere you look. You will get here the finest silk, sari fabrics, cashmeres and even hand-woven fabrics.

Apart from the rolls of colourful fabrics, you will also find here traditional garments such as the abaya and kandura, and other accessories such as buttons, sequins and laces.

Location: Across Dubai Creek from the other traditional souks, in the Al Fahidi District.

Timings: From 10:00 am to 10:00 pm.

How to get there:

By car: RTA parking is available if you wish to travel by car, however parking spaces are limited and can be hard to find. Travelling by taxi is an easier option.

By Abra: The local Abra boats can cross the creek, by taking one to the Dubai Old Souk Marine Transport Station.

By Metro: Take the Green Line to the Al Ghubaiba or the Al Fahidi Metro Station. 

By Bus: Bus F70 will stop at the nearest bust stop.

Modern Souks in Dubai

In contrast, there are several souks in Dubai that are much newer, but been built in the traditional architectural style common to the region.

Souk Madinat Jumeirah

This indoor air-conditioned souk delivers everything you would expect from a traditional souk, but with an added touch of luxury. Similar to the old bazaars, the alleys are narrow and lined with shops selling everything from spices to ornate ceramic and exquisite fabrics.

There’s even more to explore from the outside, as you sip coffee overlooking the iconic Burj Al Arab, and catch an Abra ride along the palm-fringed waterways.

Location: Part of Madinat Jumeirah resort complex, Jumeriah

Timings: Daily from 10:00 am to 11:00 pm.

How to get there:

By car: Head towards Jumeirah. Take the King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street, in the Al Sufouh 1 district and follow signs to Souk Madinat Jumeirah. Underground parking is available for visitors. Alternatively, you can arrive by taking the taxi.

By Metro: The nearest Metro station would be Mall of Emirates. From here, it’s a 10 minute taxi ride to Souk Madinat Jumeirah.

By bus: Bus 8, 81, F55A or X28 stop a 10-minute walk away form Souk Madinat Jumeirah.

Souk Al Bahar

Souk Al Bahar translates to ‘Sailor’s Market’, and sits along the waters of Burj Lake in Downtown Dubai. It is a lively market place with all the charm of old Arabia, while providing residents and tourists a shopping and dining experience like no other.

Wander between the tall archways and ornate ceiling lanterns as you explore alleyways lined with shops selling intricate handicrafts, jewellery, Arabian fashion, art and so much more. And when you feel like you need to dine, find a good spot overlooking the magnificent Burj Khalifa and Dubai Fountains.

Location: Downtown Dubai, next to Dubai Mall.

Timings: Daily from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm.

How to get there:

By car: Souk Al Bahar is easily accessible by car with ample parking spaces. Parking is free for the first two hours, and upto 4 hours for restaurant guests when validated. You can arrive by taking the taxi too.

By metro: Take the red line to the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station, and then board the Feeder Bus to Souk Al Bahar.

By bus: Bus 27 runs between Deira Gold Souk and The Dubai Mall, from where you can to walk across The Dubai Mall to reach Souk Al Bahar.

Other Modern Souks in Dubai

Other contemporary souks include The Souk at Dubai Mall, Khan Murjan at Wafi Mall and Ripe Market that run at various different locations in Dubai.

What is a Dubai Abra?

Abra comes from the Arabic verb “Abara” which means crossing. At it’s simplest, an abra is a small water craft that takes passengers across water.

In Dubai, abra are still used to this day and are one of the city’s most frequented modes of transport for crossing the Dubai Creek. Although there are many more modern craft now available and integrated as part of the Dubai public transport system, you can still catch a traditional wooden abra across the Dubai creek as many have done for decades in the past.

Is abra the same thing as a dhow?

No. Although both are water craft, there is a difference in the size, design and purpose of an abra and a dhow. Abra are designed for people crossing water, with a simple wooden bench to sit on. A traditional dhow – although coming in many shapes and sizes – is a larger boat designed to carry goods. Dhow do also operate in Dubai as tourist cruise vessels – more on them below!

Different types of abra that operate in Dubai

Today, there are four different types of Abra you will find operating in different parts of the city.:

Motorised Traditional Abra

Half-boat, half-raft, the traditional abra with a small motor and two wooden benches operates two routes that cross from one bank of Dubai Creek to the other:

• Route CR1: Bur Dubai Abra Station to Deira Old Souk Abra Station (5am to midnight) – 5 minutes
• Route CR2: Dubai Old Souq Station to Al Sabkha Abra Station (24-hours) – 7 minutes

Cost for a traditional abra

A single Dubai Creek crossing is only 1 AED per person, payable to your driver.

Nol Card on Dubai Abra

You will not need a Nol Card for Dubai abra, have some loose coins this is all you need to enjoy. (NB, you will need a Nol Card though if you’re connecting by bus or Metro).

Petrol Heritage Abra

Alternatively, there’s another class of Abra operating several routes across the creek in what’s described as Petrol Heritage Abra. They still cost only 2AED and offer an open-air experience for up to 20 passengers, slightly larger and more comfortable than the traditional abra.

You can catch Petrol Heritage Abra from the same abra stations listed above, and additionally, there are stops at Al Fahidi and Al Seef on the western bank of the creek, and Baniyas on the eastern side. (Routes CR3, CR5 & CR6).

You are paying your abra driver separately in cash each time, so you can easily mix and match your routes each time you want to cross the creek.

Petrol Heritage Canal – Dubai Water Canal

This is a separate, man-made waterway that runs from Downtown Dubai to the Gulf. A modern, petrol operated abra passes beneath the Dubai Canal Waterfall before making a circular loop of the creek:

• Alight the TR6 route at Sheikh Zayed Road Station
• The trip takes around 45 minutes
• Cost is 25AED per person (Children under 3 are free)
• Operating from 4:00 PM to 11.30 PM daily
• You can also privately charter for your group from 300 AED per hour.

Air Conditioned Abra

For a more luxurious air-conditioned abra experience, you can travel between Al Jaddaf Marine Station to Dubai Festival City (Route BM2) for just 2 AED one way.

Where can I ride an abra in Dubai?

There are several different points you can catch an authorized RTA abra from in Dubai, depending on what part of the city you would like to see, and how much you would like to pay

• The traditional motorised abra only operate across Dubai Creek – 1 AED
• Petrol abra run on Dubai Canal – 25AED
• Dubai Water Buses in Dubai Marina are being replaced with modern air-conditioned abra. You can learn more about Dubai Marina water bus services here.

As tourists delight in this modern take on traditional transportation, there are several other places in the city you can also catch an abra. These electric and eco-friendly abra cost more but can be found in prime tourist locations across the city and still deliver a quite authentic experience.

Abra rides at the Dubai Fountain

A traditional-looking abra with a modern twist, these abra are fitted with a much quieter electric motor. You can find these operating on the Burj Lake beneath the Burj Khalifa to watch the nightly Dubai Fountain show. For a front row seat you should expect to pay around 70AED per person for 25 minutes, starting from 5:45 PM nightly – check current pricing and advance book tickets here.

Souk Madinat Jumeirah

Offering possibly one of the prettiest backdrops in the city, there are electric abra that operate on the serene water ways of Souk Madinat Jumeirah., and provide a backdrop of Burj Al Arab.

The Souk Abra Station is located near the Trattoria Toscana restaurant. The Abra tour timings are:

• Winter: 10:00 am to 11:00 pm daily and Summer: 11:00 am to 11:00 pm daily
• Each tour departs every 20 minutes and lasts for 20 minutes. 

The Abra Tour ticket prices (book at the venue):

• Full Abra Tour: AED 100 per adult and AED 50 per child
• Burj View Abra Tour: AED 50 per adult and AED 50 per child
• Private Abra Tour: AED 850

Global Village Abra

The final option to consider during the winter months only is an electric abra ride through Global Village. This seasonal extravaganza runs broadly from late October to early April each year. The eco-friendly abra take passengers through the man-made canal within the Global Village grounds with the journey lasting 12-15 minutes. The price for this abra ride is 52.50 AED.
